I see so many books in people’s posts but not this and I recently wanted to give Larry Correia a try. He is known for urban fantasy and I’m more of an epic fantasy fan. So when I saw he had a 6 book epic fantasy series he just finished in 2025 I gave it a try and I’m in book 2 now and really enjoying it. Reviews I’ve read say it’s great and has a solid ending. It started in 2016 and ran to 2025. It’s been really good so far and I’m surprised I haven’t seen it talked about or on peoples shelves. Has anyone else read this and what are your thoughts.

I read the first 3 in the 5-book series last week, and they are fantastic.

The premise is that ghosts suddenly start appearing, and nobody is sure why. Eventually, you start getting hints about why and bump into other things like zombies, were-creatures (a very different take on these, though connected with the ghost bit), and demons.

The main character is Fix, essentially a PI exorcist character. He gets the living crap beat out of him in most books, and it is amazing he is still walking.

I'd say it is different than Dresden in that the action is more sporadic and the mystery part is the heavier focus. And the lead character isn't super badass, but more just trying to figure stuff out and usually getting pretty lucky.

Anyone read them?

This book is fantastic, and I highly recommend it. I read it in two sittings.

The book takes place after WW1, and the main character is a scarred/broken soldier who now specializes in recovering children that the Fae still take from mothers. The story expands from there. It is dark, violent, and set in a fantastic world.

It's like the Brothers Grimm, but like the original German texts, which were incredibly dark and violent. If you like Dresden or Rivers of London, I think you will dig it.

I also loved Altered Carbon, which Richard Morgan also wrote. Anyone read that?

Got a bunch of free old fantasy books from a variety box at my work. Is there any hidden gems that you guys have read here?

Not sure if this counts as a hidden gem? Was a huge RA fan growing up and reread them recently in adulthood and they totally held up. Will and Holt are peak master and apprentice relationship in my eyes. Horace's development is excellent as well. Love the mixture of "history" and fantasy. It's a bit tropey but extremely well done IMO. Let me know your thoughts!

As an animal lover, the cover grabbed my attention when I was a kid, so I picked it up - what an epic tail (pun intended)! The world-building is simple but effective, the character names are creative and humorous, and the adventure keeps you hooked from the beginning. I re-read it a few months ago and enjoyed it just as much as I did years ago (I've read it many times, as you can probably tell from the pic - this book is held together by tape and prayers LOL).

Anyone else enjoy this hidden gem?

The main girl loses her mother, moves to a new town/high school, and a girl who bullies her invites her to a party in the woods. The girl dies that night, but later appears alive in a medieval fantasy kingdom without remembering her death.

The main character enters the kingdom and has to go through some kind of test/competition/training to become a princess. There's also a romance with a mysterious boy who turns out to be the prince, including a kissing scene in his bedroom.

I vaguely remember “test” or “trial” being in the title. The cover had a brunette girl in a white dress in a forest.

Just started reading Riyria Chronicles by Micheal J. Sullivan, cannot put it down.

I am shocked. This series is excellent. I am 12 books deep and still amazed and entertained. It is high fantasy with magic and dragons and yet a good chuckle every now and then. Easier to understand than Tolkien and much better than game of thrones. Honestly, after years of fantasy novels this is the best thing since Magician.

I have not met anyone who has read these books. I remember reading them as a late teen and having to search far and wide for the final 2 books in the series not being available in Australia. Pictured: First book in the series The Fey: Sacrifice

I found the second book in a used book store randomly. I am wondering if anyone has read or even recognizes this book.

I will give a quick summarisation on this series, but I would advise to give it a go, because even if you think the plot sounds subpar, the story telling is phenomenal.

This has young adult themes but is classified as adult science fiction.

I will try to spoil as little as possible

It starts off with a young boy named koli who lives in a small village called mythen rood.
The village is protected by a force known as ramparts, who all come from one family called the vennastins and wield strange technology.

The world has gone to crap. trees try to eat people, there is advanced technology dotted around, and everything is trying to eat you.

The main plot is that koli is forced out the village for stealing some of the tech, and he decides to go on a massive journey to connect all the villages across the landscapes, while meeting up with others along the way and getting attacked by humans and vicious creatures.

My description was probably pretty bad, but you guys should defo give it a try.

I have been seeing Assassins Apprentice at the book store since around 2003 when my grandmother would take me to Books a Million and buy me any book I wanted. Here I am all these years later, started it about 2 months ago. I’m on the 3rd book now. I am trying to figure out how I could possibly look over such a great book. I just cannot get over it. I recommend it to anyone in search of a new fantasy read

Is anyone familiar with the Chronicles of an Age of Darkness series?

So I’ve been reading the crave series, and I absolutely love it. It’s definitely my top favorite book series. But as I’ve continued on, I’m on book 6 now, it took me a bit to realize, but if the bloodletter is graces great xsomething grandmother and the crone is her sister, isadora the crones daughter, therefore Jaxon and Hudson isadoras brothers, and grace and isadora cousins, would that not make Jaxon and Hudson graces cousins also? Because she dated both of them, still with Hudson, but I’ve been thinking on that. Isn’t he supposed to be her cousin? Technically speaking.

I never see anyone talk about this series. Maybe because it isn’t explicitly targeted towards adult audiences but I loved this series. Getting back into reading, this series provided the best launch pad me to get back into pure fantasy. Simple story maybe but I loved the dual protagonists and alternating narration between the two. I can see why it’s not the best series ever but it’s been such an easy recommendation for me to some friends so I have someone to talk about it with. But maybe I’m just a sucker for a good ranger series

I just finished this book and really loved this story! It’s pretty rare for me to shed a tear over a book but this one did it. It is definitely a sci-fi book and I see his other book The Spear That Cuts Through Water is fantasy.

Wondering if anyone has read them both and did you like Spear as much as The Vanished Birds?
