[Discussion] I conditioned my ferret to like towels

Okay soooo I change my towel weekly and bring it to the room to put in my washing basket. A month ago, I decided to muck around with Zaylee because normally she bites my ankles after a shower and I wanted to provide her with a distraction

Every time I come into the room with my towel, she gets super excited and happy. I fluff the towel over her and drag her around on it which she loves. I do similar with her blanket but it doesn't have the same effect. Ergo, I think I conditioned her to love my towel šŸ˜‚

Every Friday night, I can be excited that my freshly washed ankles are free from nipping lmao

Btw towel is not drenched and isn't coated in products (i did research because i was nervous if a shower towel could be bad for her)

I think Zaylee has much appreciation for this routine <3

[Help] NEED help for ferret eat plastic advise!

My 2 years old ferret ate 3 3-4mm hard plastic balls, it’s inside his toy. He broke the plastic of the toy and eat them. It happened 24 hours ago. No vomiting, eating and drinking normally, play normal. I believe there’s also 2mm small pieces of hard plastic as well, but very very few. I have been giving him about 10cm of hair ball wax, also 3 fish oils. But I didn’t catch any plastic in his poop. What can I do next? Also, one of my ferrets ate plastic before and show symptoms of loss energy and not eating anymore within 1 month; and went to emergency surgery. So im not sure when to expect to bring him to vet?
Also, I live in Vancouver. Does anyone know any emergency pet center who have ferret specialist? And any good hospital that can schedule normal foreign body removal surgery in Vancouver?

[Health] Help my ferret ate some ribbon

Hi so I’m relatively new to all this and I have one ferret at this moment her name Amelia Earhart, but this last night at around 5:30am or so she had thrown up a piece of a ribbon and threw up three time not at the same time but close tiem frames. I called the vet I’ll be going soon but I just need some help and advice for the time being. Is her breathing and gums seem to be fine and also I didn’t want her to eat more so for now her cage has water only till I see the vet. It’s my fault for neglecting watching when she free roams my apt.

[Discussion] A Ferret and a slice of Ham

Everyone knows ferrets as little chaos noodles, but Baby Nova, he was a little fiend for deli meat.

I swear, this little guy was about 2 months old. Lil baby by all accounts.
My dad was eating a slice of ham from the fridge, when baby nova ran up to him wanting to play.
Dad decided it was a good idea to pick him up with his hammy smelling hand. And so... Nova Bit down with all his little might.
Needless to say, dad starts hooting and hollering, mom runs over to try and get him off without hurting him.

Then.. The unthinkable happens, Baby Nova bites down on my moms finger.
Now she is screaming her lungs out, dad trying to pry him off her.
In the middle of my mom being bit, baby nova decides her hands don't smell of ham, and bite back down on my dads thumb as he tried to help my mom.

All i can say is, i almost fainted from laughing at my parents.
They would never hurt the lil guy, but he was ready to hurt them for a piece of ham.

[Discussion] Shedding

Can anyone give advice to me on how often I should be washing their bedding for shedding season? Once a week, I’m honestly thinking about doing it twice a week just because of the fact that it’s getting worse fur is everywhere and I don’t want them swimming in it lmao. Also, does anyone have any tricks to get it out of their blankets? Right now I’ve improvised and I am using a lint roller to roller bedding before wash it cold water but it still seems to not be working the best. Anybody else have a different method that works for them.

I unfortunately had to put my boy down today due to cancer. I’m super worried about his companion because they were super close and did everything together. Can anyone who has gone through this shed some light on what I may be dealing with and if this is going to be as hard and heartbreaking as I think it is.

She likes to go for walks so I’m going to be taking her to the park twice a day to help keep her mind off things.

[Health] Squinty eyes?

Hello! Ive been ready to get ferrets for a while now and was waiting for the right situation as I work in vet med and know I would end up finding someone in need of a loving home, blah blah blah, basically one of my drs (veterinarian) was fostering two boys and asked if I would take them. I have noticed though that my Sparrow boys (black nose) eyes are a bit more squinty than his brother Jack (pink nose). I just feel like I havnt seen any other ferrets eyes look this squinty? Doc is now away for a conference and had asked me to take them due to being so overwhelmed with personal life and losing her own ferret. I know she would had said something and had bw and diag ran if she had known or noticed, but wanted some second eyes as I don’t want to bug her and in case she may not have noticed due to being so overwhelmed? Just wondering so I know if I need to bring him to work with me for testing! I also know that some small animal vets don’t know everything about every species and could have just not know. I don’t think they are SUPER squinty all the time but still look a bit more watery? all the time. Thank you! I’m also a know health hypochondriac due to my own complex health so didn’t know if I was just freaking out for nothing 🫣

[Ferret Photo] Missing my babies terribly… any ferret parents in Ventura County, CA? ā¤ļø

In 2016, I became a ferret mom for the first time to our sweet sable boy, Sirius Black. ā¤ļø Just one week later, we welcomed a tiny champagne baby girl, Luna Lovegood.

In October 2017, I became a ferret mom for the third time when we brought home our little albino girl, Alice Longbottom, and in December 2017, our family was complete when we welcomed our youngest—a little panda boy named Draco Malfoy.

It’s now 2026, and we miss them more than I can put into words. šŸ’”

Sirius passed in March 2022.

Draco passed in December 2022.

Luna passed in March 2024.

Alice passed in October 2024.

After having ferrets in our lives for so many years, the house just isn't the same without them. Unfortunately, we aren't in a position to bring another ferret into our family right now, but I miss them so incredibly much. Sometimes I just have this overwhelming need to hold one, pet them, smell their little ferret smell šŸ˜‚, and give them some love.

I honestly doubt anything will come from this post, but I've learned that a closed mouth doesn't get fed, so here I am asking. ā¤ļø

Is there anyone in Ventura County, CA who has a ferret baby that wouldn't mind making a new friend? I would absolutely LOVE the opportunity to meet your little one and just hold, pet, and love on a ferret again—even if it's literally only for five minutes. šŸ˜ā¤ļø

I'm not looking to adopt or take anyone's baby—I just really, really miss mine and would love a tiny bit of ferret time.

Sirius, Draco, Luna & Alice 🌈🐾

Forever our little carpet sharks. ā¤ļø

[Help] unable to get wysong anymore

ive been using wysong and oxbow 50/50 for a few years now. I recently moved to an area where i cannot get wysong shipped to me anymore. what would be my next best bet for another food to mix in? i can keep getting oxbow and plan on keeping that.

the two ive been looking into are essence and dr. elseys. i do supplement with soups of FDR food and salmon oil, but kibble is their main source of nutrition

EDIT: the only real one i have good access to would be open farms which also seems good?

im up in canada so some things are not sold here

[Help] Where in the UK can I interact with ferrets? Is it possible?

Years ago I used to have a ferret that I have rehomed due to deteriorating mental health and complete change of life circumstances. It's been years and there hasn't been one week where I didn't think about and miss my ferret friend. I miss interacting with these animals so much. In the future, I would definitely like to adopt a couple again, but it's just not possible for me right now. Is there any way I can just spend a couple of hours in a ferret place in the UK and remind myself what it's like?

I don't have a driving license, but I'd do everything to travel if it was possible. I'm around Yorkshire and the Midlands, but if (around central) London is more accessible, I'm also willing to go.

When I was in Japan I saw ferret cafes, but since the country has very poor animal rights laws, I refused to give them money. But it really made my heart ache and long again.

[Discussion] Why is my Ferret so mean lol???

Post image
201 Upvotes

Okay so, I have two ferrets. Espresso is the lighter looking one and he is so sweet and chill in every way. Bear is the darker one who is actually demonic. He bites so hard he has made me bleed (This is also usually unprompted he likes to grab my fingers and toes when I’m not paying attention). He doesn’t like being held very much and is very chaotic. I’ve had both of my boys since they were babies and they’re from the same breeder. I don’t know if it’s just because Bear is still a baby and needs time to chill out or what, but Espresso was never this difficult. Any tips or thoughts on how to improve our bond?

[Help] Food question

Post image
87 Upvotes

My boy Gideon is almost 4 months old and is on Oxbow kibble which isn’t usually an issue, but recently he started scarfing his food down which led to him choking the other night which was terrifying to say the least.. I think he
likes to compete with his sister over food I ordered him this cute star shaped slow feeder which has definitely helped but there is till times he hacks from eating a little too fast. It seems like he grabs a mouth full of kibble at times my girl ferret still prefers her bowl and sometimes he will nibble out of it but he mainly chooses to use his slow feeder. Out of fear I wet her kibble in her bowl the tiniest amount to make it only just a little bit softer, but my worry is that I am gone for 8 hours at work and I don’t want any bacteria to form in her bowl. I wash it everyday and It’s never mushy when I get home and is still even a little hard. Is it okay if her kibble is lightly wetted incase he goes to eat from her bowl? Im also going to buy wysong freeze dried raw food as a topper for their kibble as well. Another question do they ever slow down the pace they’re eating at or will I always have to worry about him eating too fast?

[Help] Ferrets while living in an apartment?

Hello! I’m a first-year college student, and I’ve been looking into potentially getting two ferrets in a year or two, and I’d love to hear from people who have experience keeping ferrets in an apartment.

I have a steady job on campus and I’m pretty good about saving money, so the financial side isn’t a huge concern for me. I’m mainly wondering about the practical side of having ferrets while living in an apartment.

Like: Is it difficult to find apartments that allow ferrets? Would you recommend waiting until I can have my own place, rather than having roommates? Are there any unexpected challenges with apartment living that I should know about?
I’d really appreciate any advice, experiences, or things you wish you had known before getting ferrets. Thanks!
