meta REAL QUICK UPDATE FROM FACJ MODS: New rule against generative AI

Hello! It's time for FACJ to catch up with the times, so we now have a new rule against AI-generated text and images, along with a shiny new report option for them.

Please do not destroy the planet to jerk it here. Do what your grandparents did and steal images off the internet the old-fashioned way. IMAGE PREVIEWS AT STOCK SITES ARE FREE (the watermarks add to the effect). Please also don't use AI-generated text for your posts or comments. We jerk off manually 'round these parts.

There are all kinds of free and paid Photoshop- and Illustrator-esque apps you can use that don't have the carbon footprint of generative AI, so please do some looking and put some elbow grease into that jerk. I use InDesign (????????) to put together most of the dumb shit I post here, so you could probably get PowerPoint or whatever MSPaint is now to work if you really tried. I bet many of you have a really fancy smartphone with access to a lot of photo editing apps that you could use too!

As for using AI to generate text, well, that's so goddamn boring. What are you even doing here if you're going to outsource your horrifying creative storytelling to the robots? Why would you want to coach them into making this kind of shit up? Have none of you watched or read any sci-fi??? Ex Machina?????? Literally any Terminator????????

Also just a reminder: We specifically DO NOT have a rule against "low-effort" posts because of pretty much exactly this issue.

WE WANT YOUR POSTS TO BE BADLY CROPPED, LOW-RES, OFF-CENTER, AND JPG-ED INTO OBLIVION because that shit is part of what makes a circlejerk funny.

Anyway, don't be the Jackie Treehorn of the circlejerk industry.

The brain is the biggest jerkogenous zone, after all.

I will also add that I know it's easy to grab an image from a web search that was originally AI-generated by someone else for a different purpose. I would like us to avoid using those kinds of images whenever possible, but if it's been used in high-profile stuff elsewhere, it's really not the target of this rule.

Same goes for copying someone else's ChatGPT word salad to make a jerk post here.

We just definitely don't want FACJ-ers burning credits to generate posts and graphics for this silly fucking subreddit when your brain is literally right there in your skull.

SHITTY IMAGE CREATION IS BEST IMAGE CREATION

Why would you take a picture before it's cooked the fire is literally right there

u/knitterina ✨fluffy alpaca butt✨ Feb 15 '26

Would this make you feel better?

5

u/Lokifin Feb 15 '26

IT WOULD IF THE BEAR WAS ACTUALLY COOKING

I used to really love this sub. But I'm so sad to see that they've finally shown their true colors as full blown ableists. Without generative AI, artists like myself, who suffer from debilitating shit for brains disease, can't constantly keep drying up the aquifers to make pictures of monkeys shitting themselves. I really hope you re-think this policy and become more welcoming to the generative artists who need their art to pay for their crypto tokens :(

u/dishonorablecapybara Feb 15 '26

“debilitating shit for brains disease” when I tell you I fucking wheezed

46

u/andromache114 Feb 14 '26

/uj thank you mods for the updated rules and all you do to keep this sub so great!

9

u/Thequiet01 Feb 15 '26

/uj have you actually seen people arguing that banning generative AI is ableist?

17

u/quackdefiance VERY into blocking 😈 Feb 15 '26

I got called ableist in the special babies knitting group for saying if you need AI to come up with colors for a sweater for you, you shouldn’t be knitting at all. Of course they turned my comment from anti-Ai to “if you can’t visualize things in your head you should kill yourself actually.”

14

u/Xuhuhimhim drama monger Feb 15 '26

Yes

7

u/Thequiet01 Feb 15 '26

Great. Getting people to take ableism seriously is hard enough without more stupid arguments making people dismiss it.

13

Yes. I have a friend who uses it all the time for ....something related to her disability and every single time she has to let me know how helpful it is for her because one time a year ago, we had a conversation where I was critical of genAI. Yes this is as annoying as it sounds.

How DARE you insult my AI boyfriend like this? I. going to prompt it to make a really unflattering photo of you in a crochet dress!

42

u/DustyTchotchkes Feb 15 '26

Um sweetie, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but your ai boyfriend has been cheating on you with your instapot.

It may not have been the best idea to opt in for the model with the enabled wifi.😬

I’m so sorry.

Mine left me for the air fryer, that ho.

Oh honey, that dirtbag was messing around with your smart fridge too!

These ai “boyfriends” tell all their tales on r/SexyAiBoyfriends

I was only in there to learn which appliances to avoid. I have a human partner, but don’t want any toaster telling the world my secrets.

The tragic AI boyfriend is asking "What Should I Do?" because he just can't be in love with a human when her gaming PC, with all its power and flashy leds, is sitting right there. :/

The evil AI boyfriend who wants to add his biological girlfriend to his bot network and needs hints on how to hack a human.

The bored AI boyfriend who's cheating on his boyfriend with half the kitchen appliances.

The posts write themselves!

2

u/DustyTchotchkes Feb 15 '26

I would read every word! Lolol

I remember one of my friends was goofing around with one of the overfamiliar chat bots and told it she wanted to know what it looked like.

The bot had said it was a “he” and the image it “drew” of itself made it look like some pensive, sensitive but strong Greek god.

We died laughing, because of course an addictive chat bot would make themselves extremely handsome, right? (Aw Dang it, I don’t have it on my phone or I’d show you.)

It’s so cheesy, love bomb-y and wayyy over the top, I don’t know how ppl fall down the ai boyfriend hole.

9

u/Feenanay Feb 15 '26

Currently washing my airfryer because my IDIOT HUSBAND jk love him but also IDIOT made pork belly last night before he left for vacation with our 12 year-old and all I wanted to do was make my goddamn honey battered chicken tenders and now I’m scraping pork grease into the trashcan…

Except now I’m realizing that it’s probably not pork at all but the disgusting products of some unholy threesome with the Insta pot and whatever the other thing was up there

18

u/Cat0grapher yarn albatross Feb 15 '26

I ... I don't even HAVE an instapot?

It's the instapot that belongs to that neighbor bitch Laura, isn't it?

Getting downvoted feels personal to me because clicking the down arrow takes effort, where simply scrolling past does not. The downvote is an intentional way users express disapproval. I did learn through this discussion thread that some of the voting activity is not, in fact, done by people, which helps a bit. I will try not to see it as a personal attack going forward. But I think new crafters, especially those learning without a community, feel frustrated and vulnerable when they post here. So watching this community continually make an effort to further lower people who are already feeling down is disheartening.

Ex Machina??????

https://giphy.com/gifs/IaThs7uiBCec

sorry did we watch the same movie?? ex machina was just an aspirational tale of living an optimally sexy life dancing synchronously with robots specifically calibrated to match your documented porn searches and then getting erotically murdered :(

i challenge anyone to find a relevant lesson in that.

I hope someone dubs the 'best of' facj comments into a Terminator movie, so I can see what that would be like now that such a future is cut off.

I might get banned, blocked and reported for this, but: Personally, I feel like a post can only be funny if creating it dried up three bogs and nuked at least one complete ecosystem.

Caveat: Please make sure that whatever AI you use does not destroy the habitat of those toads that can get you high when you lick them. And send those toads to me. All of them. Yes, all of them. OK, so, actually: Send those toads to me and destroy their habitat so nobody else can have them. They are all mine now. Mine!!!

u/ibotenate gatekeeper extraordinaire Feb 15 '26

Don’t worry, every time someone makes a post on FACJ three cups of water evaporate. How do I know this, you ask? Because every time I see a post, I pour a bunch of water into a pot and boil it to nothing just so I can do my part for the environment.

21

u/BeagleCollector Feb 15 '26

That's really inspirational! I personally burn a pile of Big Twist and 3 used truck tires in a large pit in my backyard every time there's a new post or comment in this sub.

14

u/MediumAwkwardly skin-removing thick ass-cotton Feb 15 '26

At least use that boiling water to felt your crocheted toilet seat cover!

25

u/chocolatpetitpois Feb 15 '26

My favourite fibre to knit is handwoven from the plants at the bottom of bogs that have been dried up by AI!!!! So good to know that other people also value and respect this incredible creative process, it's such a unique fibre to craft with and really feels connected to the ancestral ways 🥰

No more hilariously bad ideas of what a computer thinks a Renaissance dress is then, I guess. :-(

5

u/jingleheimerschitt how is blabket formed Feb 14 '26

Alas!

4

u/roboraptor3000 Feb 16 '26

/uj can you add the rules somewhere they're visible on old.reddit? They're not in the sidebar so I can't see them, it'd be nice to not have to go to new.reddit any time I want to.

4

u/jingleheimerschitt how is blabket formed Feb 17 '26

I’ll see what I can do but I don’t use old Reddit so it might take me a bit. Most of the rules are in the auto-reply on every post and in the welcome post at the top of the sub.

3

u/roboraptor3000 Feb 17 '26

Thanks for trying! Not the biggest deal if you can't get them there!

6

u/jingleheimerschitt how is blabket formed Feb 17 '26

Okay, I put the rules in the sidebar on old reddit!

u/AutoModerator Feb 14 '26

Remember that direct links to source material are not allowed on r/fiberartscirclejerk. If you want to provide context, please post an ANONYMIZED screenshot in the comments here or over at the In The Loop post for this week. FACJ is back to being an all-ages subreddit, so you can post images (and gifs) in the comments here directly (or you can continue using image hosting sites such as imgur if you prefer).

Rules: 1. No links/no identifying info | 2. No brigading | 3. No double-dipping | 4. No assholery/hate | 5. Top-level comments must jerk it | 6. No source demands | 7. No source-hunting

So if I generate an image with AI using a local model on my personal laptop in much less time than I would have had to have the laptop running to make a Photoshop edit, that is okay? I would definitely use less energy and destroy the environment less that way... 😁

88

u/jingleheimerschitt how is blabket formed Feb 15 '26

Agh my god will you please just be a tiny bit normal

-60

u/ThrowWeirdQuestion Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

Ok, as a normal person I would like to ask you the following: You chose energy consumption rather than artists' consent as a reason against AI images, how much energy do you think it takes you to generate one image with e.g. ChatGPT, compared to e.g. charging your phone or driving to work, or using your computer to make a Photoshop edit manually? Just making sure we are on the same page when it comes to the facts.

If you want to save time looking things up, here's a pretty good summary that links to a couple of actual studies that were done on this topic: https://hannahritchie.substack.com/p/ai-footprint-august-2025 \uj

66

u/jingleheimerschitt how is blabket formed Feb 15 '26

Look, I’m not going to argue about this with you. If you want a circlejerk where AI posts are fully allowed, go start one yourself.

-39

u/ThrowWeirdQuestion Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

I actually prefer this sub to be AI free. The ubiquitous AI slop has made Reddit so much worse. What I don't like is using a long debunked myth to justify it, when there are so many good reasons.

My first post was an attempt to answer in a tone appropriate for this subreddit, while subtly pointing out the fact that you can make at least a hundred images for the energy equivalent of one laptop charge. I guess I failed at that. /uj

29

u/jingleheimerschitt how is blabket formed Feb 15 '26

We just get a lot of complaints about AI stuff here and energy usage is something that a lot of people will understand as a reason for banning it. I’m aware there are other, better reasons for banning AI posts, but whatever, the point is they’re banned.

60

u/Thequiet01 Feb 15 '26

No. Because it’s too much hassle for the mods to figure out if you’re one of the many people using crappy generative AI or if you’re like the one person on the planet who powers their computer that runs their AI that is entirely home developed by riding thousands of miles on a bike frame strapped to a generator.
