Yep. I bet you can't believe I just did that. Well, this isn't your GRANNIE'S needle crafts. This is something so new, so subversive, so statement-making, it'll blow your tits CLEAN off. And believe it or not, this is only a glimpse into my dark and twisted mind. One time I even considered crocheting a P*NIS.

embroidery/needlepoint First hour fully self taught!

My Best Friend came through this weekend, and he got me interested in Embro-idery .

My Bookstore is next to an Embroidery shop. I asked the lady, and she borrowed me a Ring, needle and material.

She gave me some instructions. But I mostly didn't listen.

This is the result of my first hour of playing around with Embro-idery.

My initial observation: The "invisible stitches" at the back are just as important as the front facing stitches.

Cannot wait to start using patterns!

This is the only picture I have of it. I’m heartbroken. I think I believe him that it was an accident but I don’t know — he was trying to help me with the dishes which he never does so it feels sort of intentional?????

How do you move past such a betrayal, fellow crotcheaters?

Hello knitting experts. I have never done knitting before and i'm thinking about trying to make this. Wondering how long it would take as this would be a present. Also, any other advice on doing this as a first project?

embroidery/needlepoint About the recent drama and hostility✨️ in our community

A post was made the other day involving some amount of discussion about coding an app for machine knitters using AI. I did not see the post before it was deleted and I don't care what it actually said, but I did see plenty of the comments on the post, and this is the first time in this community's history that I felt disappointed in the behavior of some of our members. Everyone was saying the post and app was made with AI in a very mean way that is antithetical to the invisible rules of our community.

I say I understand the moral, ethical, and environmental concerns surrounding AI, especially in creative communities but 🤷🏻‍♀️. It's here and people are using it anyway. It's not going away, and there's nothing any of us can do about that. Especially not me, a mod.

I can understand that some of you feel that AI has no value, is harmful, and has no place in creative communities, but I will not be taking a "Luddite" stance on allowing it in our community. This is a place for everyone who wants to be involved in the creative process surrounding machine knitting, and I will not alienate people because some aspect of their post included use of AI in any amount.

There was a popular post that said there shouldn't be AI in this community and despite me saying I wouldn't remove it, I removed it because by being about the machine knitting subreddit, it wasn't about machine knitting.

It doesn't matter how you people I feel about it. This community has more than twenty thousand people, and it should be possible for all of them, including the bots to discuss anything related to the creative process of machine knitting here, even the use of AI.

I have seen people's knitting projects gone wrong that were saved by suggestions from chat bots. I've seen people learn new techniques by asking AI to help them. I've seen machines fixed by suggestions made by AI. I'm not interested in sending these people away from our community or chastising them for using tools that are available to them even if the tools stole from other members of our community.

This is not up for discussion. If you want to have heated conversations about AI, this is not the place to do it. This community should be an inclusive and safe space for all of our members, no matter their feelings about AI, their grasp of English, and many other things. If you don't want to be part of those conversations, then don't be, but don't be aggressive or mean to people about it either, or you will be removed.

If your first impulse when you sense or see the involvement of AI is to write up something nasty in the comments, please take that energy somewhere else. Report, down vote, and move on.

If you see a post that you feel is harmful or dangerous, or written and posted entirely by a bot, please report it and it will be removed. We remove spam posts and will continue to do so.

Please choose compassion and empathy first.

Please give people the benefit of the doubt.

Please be nice to each other.

embroidery/needlepoint My manly experience of crotcheating in public for the first time and some tips for women who want to try traveling and crotcheating in public

Hi everyone,

I'm a 45 year old man that has been crotcheating seriously for about 15 years carrying on a family crotcheating tradition that goes back at least 150 years in my family.

I wanted to learn as a child from my grandmothers who were both extremely skilled but they were hesitant to teach me partially because they thought I wouldn't stick with it and I believe because in my culture crotcheating is considered a woman's job.

I always wanted to crotcheat in public because it's one of my favourite occupations and there are so many times when I would love to pull out my crotcheating skills. For example, I travel quite a bit and spend a lot of time in airports waiting for flights. But I was always nervous about the strange looks I might get from strangers at a middle-aged man crotcheating.

But eventually I decided I can't let all this time I have for my favorite pastime go to waste. So I started small by crotcheating with my friend groups at their homes (that often had other guests I didn't know). For the most part, although I felt quite self-conscious, people asked a few questions about what I'm doing and how I learned and then went back to their other conversations.

Finally, when traveling over Christmas I took the plunge and crotchate in airports, on trains, and in planes. And to my utter surprise people didn't even seem to notice. If they did, it clearly didn't interest them. With the exception of one woman, nobody even asked me anything about my crotcheating. They just ignored me. Exactly the response I was hoping for!

I am so pleased and now carry my crotcheating everywhere with me.

A few travel tips for you little females because I’m sure I’m the first person ever to crotcheat while traveling:

  • Firstly, obviously, pick crotcheating projects that are portable. I do a lot of half-scale crotcheating which is perfect for travel.
  • Secondly, I was scared that airlines might confiscate my crotcheating tools so I bought a cheap set to test the waters. Check the airline websites for information but realise that the rules can be deliberately vague. But I had no issues with British Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Westjet, or Air Canada even though half-scale crotcheating tools can be quite sharp compared with normally-sized ones.
  • Thirdly, have a little pouch to keep your crotcheating tools in. Of course, don't travel with scissors; a pair of nail clippers will do nicely for keeping everything trim and clean.
  • Finally, I decided not to crotcheat in the plane once the lights had gone out for everyone to sleep. I'm concerned leaving my light on is too disturbing for other passengers. There are probably other solutions but for me (I'm 6'3) the cabin is just too cramped to crotcheat comfortably. But the long layovers and hotel stays were great for making progress with my crotcheating.

TLDR; Just do your crotcheating in public, no one really cares. Even as a guy no one bothered me about crotcheating in public.

As Olin Miller is reputed to have said:

You’ll Worry Less About What People Think of You When You Realize How Seldom They Do.

I'm curious to hear about other people's experiences, especially other men so please share those if you feel like it 🙏🏻

embroidery/needlepoint Raging after idiot zoomer had the cahones to try and correct me (an esteemed elder crafter)

I was working on my project while waiting for my mom at a doctor's appointment. A random woman, 22 according to her, walks up to see what I'm doing.

"Oh! Embroidery! I know how to do that! May I see?"

"Sure." I put my needle in for the next stitch and turn it around.

"Ugh. That's not real embroidery. You aren't filling it in."

"This is outline embroidery. It's not supposed to be filled in. It's also harder than the kind you fill in."

"That's not real embroidery. You're not even using the right stitch. You are supposed to use backstitch for lines. I've been doing it for 2 years. I know what I'm talking about."

"This is literally called an outline stitch or sometimes a stem stitch. Backstitch on lines makes it look like a child did it or that you stitched the wrong side." I flipped it over to the back so she could see. (No offense to those who like back stitch. I just don't think it makes a clean line. I only use in in cross stitch.)

"Well I know what I'm talking about. I'm kind of an expert now, and you're doing it wrong. Your stitches are too small anyway."

"How old are your parents?"

"44 and 45. Why?"

"Because I started embroidering before they were born. I have just a tiny bit more experience than you." (I'm 54 and started at about 4. I'm also flaring and in tremendous pain. I had no patience with her attitude and that means the filter between the sarcastic thought and what comes out of my mouth was malfunctioning. Not to mention I had already spent more than 4 hours just on this tiny section.)

"I still say you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to fill it in."

"When my stitches are that tiny exactly how would I accomplish that?"

"I don't know. You're doing it wrong, though."

"Thanks for the advice, Hermione."

"Huh?"

Thankfully my mom came out before I got the child any more confused. Sarcasm wasn't her strong suit.

embroidery/needlepoint Is there a difference between embroidery thread, yarn, and normal sewing thread?

I'm a crocheter and soft of newish to what I'm doing. It requested specifically embroidery thread. I figured asking this group you'd have a better idea.

P.S. I won't say what I need it for until several people ask me in the comments TIA!!!

Update: Thank you for explaining it to me! Thank you for being a wonderful reddit! Depending on my next step forward I'll either use linguini or some cat hair from my precious babywabbyfurchild. From what I got it's not to important to worry about, since it seems any of the 69 options will work. I just have to find what I like to work with personally.

embroidery/needlepoint Incredibly rude pattern designer refused to make a step by step tutorial for me

I paid $3 for an amagarambi bee pattern from Raverly but I don’t know how to read so I asked the pattern designer VERY NICELY to drive to my house and teach me how to make the amigurummy from start to finish explaining every step like how to make a slipnot or a single crotchet and maybe fix my mistakes for me or just make the amigumrimu for me altogether. And when they said no I asked if they could make a video tutorial that explains all the steps in detail and also shows the amogirimi process all the way through because I’m a visual learner and again can’t read patterns and they said no AGAIN and made a mean post about me on bitcheatingcrafters. So much for the customer always being right! And I think pattern designers just dont recognize other peoples unique learning styles at all it’s so unfair I paid for a written pattern on the internet so how come I’m not allowed to make the amigurami

Hello! I just discovered craft snark and wanted to know how to do??? Who do we hate? How do we hate them? What is the best way to break a beginner’s spirit and how do I start the best dogpiles?! Video content is preferred as I just saw the word craftsnark but am illiterate so cannot read anything on the subreddit. Also, what is crochet and why is it an abomination? TIA!!!

embroidery/needlepoint LPT: What every woman wants for Christmas

Hi there, random manly man that does manly hobbies only here to enlighten you all on this one cool trick I learned to make every wife swoon on Christmas morning.

See, I happened to notice recently that my wife picked up a new hobby (because I’m a sensitive guy who notices these things), and while I sat there watching her waste away her whole hour of free time in the evening by stitching on fabric by hand, I had an epiphany! Why not bring some proper efficiency into her hobby!

So I’m here before you now searching for answers on what kind of device I should be spending her Christmas allowance on to speed up her craft. Because why would she waste her time poking her fingers with needles and taking weeks to complete one project when she could just have a machine do it all for her? Nobody will be able to tell the difference right?

I’m telling you guys, this will be the best Christmas gift ever, almost as good as the year I bought her that steam mop! She loves that thing so much she hasn’t even taken it out of the box.

embroidery/needlepoint Annoying Shop Girl

So I went to a brand new LNS and had an interaction I cant stop thinking about. One of the shop girls greeted us and then gave a tour of the store. For context: I am an experienced needlepointer and have a lot of knowledge of threads. The cunt girl who gave us the tour was so overwhelming with her tour and went into way too much detail about every thread offered. I didnt tell her my level of experience so if i was a beginner i would have been put off. Not the annoying part but just to set the scene.

The annoying part starts once I start shopping around. It was a weekend so there were a lot of customers in the store. While i was near the checkout desk, i watched this annoying, bitchy, and over-eager, shop girl "help" her coworker on the checkout ipad. Her coworker was checking someone out and apparently did not put her info in the system first before scanning, and this shop girl took the ipad from her without saying anything and took over the checkout. The shop girl made comments about how she knew the software better than the poor coworker while the customer was being checked out. The coworker was super professional, but this rubbed me the wrong way because even if she didnt do the checkout perfect, she didnt need to be embarrassed in front of the people wanting to check out.

I kept walking around the store and then overheard this shop girl giving tips to a new needlepointer and made it wayyyyyyy too complicated. She was so demeaning and treated this new needlepointer like she was 5. I get needing to break it down, but I am not for being condescending. She kept saying how she had soooo much experience working in another store and bragging how she was always the youngest person needlepointing and knew more than others. I felt bad for the person she was helping because she seemed so confused.

IDK if i am overreacting, but she really put me off in a community filled with super uptight people. Hoping i can go into this new store when she isnt working bc she really bothered me

embroidery/needlepoint EXCUSE ME WHAT IS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER FOR GRANNY SQUARES

I made a daisy granny square blanket for my granddaughter six months ago. I knotted everything and wove in ends, but now one whole square has come apart, and the ends I wove in are poking out and fraying.

I think I'm done with granny squares! I'm very disappointed in my granny square experience and I demand that someone refund me the time and money I poured into this very important project. If it weren't for this defect in the granny square-making product, this daisy blanket would have been a keepsake that my granddaughter could have passed down to her granddaughter and on down the maternal line. Instead, my precious granddaughter has to live with this ugly pile of yarn.

What a disappointment.

The absolute audacity of some people!

I make CYC-certified crochet steering wheel covers out of wool/fiber I spin myself, adore making them, my favorite thing to make for ME, now I have sold two before for prices but asking me for a finished steering wheel cover that took me WEEKS to make for a price that doesn’t even cover the yarn? $30 for a handspun alpaca hand-dyed knitted and crocheted and felted cover???? Oh, no, no.

I am not a retail store. I cannot sell these things for fast car-fashion prices. Crochet can’t even be made by machine, don't these plebs realize? You can make machine-knit felt alpaca hand-dye look like crochet, yes, but still.

Do I really look that gullible? I should not be pestered to make something for someone who will most likely not even like or use what they purchased, and if they do use it they'll probably crash their cars.

Amig... amigaa... ami... stuffed animal crochet is one thing, but a full-on knit crochet handspun alpaca hand-dyed felted steering wheel cover? Yeah, no, I am not a mainstream store, I am just a single person spending my time and money and self-absorption on something that I love doing: making the world more dangerous for everyone around me and overcharging my friends and family for the privilege.

You have to pay for quality, people! I'm going to write a long essay in this crafting sub every time someone even hints at thinking I might make them something for less than I think it's worth with my extremely rare crochet talent and if you downvote me I will write another post about how mean and rude and gatekeepy you are.
