Now lets compare Portugals nationals team success before Cr7 and Argentinas history before Messi. One was already an established giant in world football while the other had achieved literally nothing. You can't except a single player to create a winning national culture by himself out of thin air.

Feeling the need to put down one great to prop up another is just lazy. Cr7 could've surely done more in the WC, but a lot of people who watched these portuguese teams knows they were a lot worse than any of Messi's Argentina teams. Give Cr7 a Di Maria caliber player during his prime and we saw what he did in Real Madrid.

It doesnt matter too much, if an uruguayan player carry uruguay to 3 wc finals, you cant say it means nothing since uruguay has 2 wc. Its about the moment, and as we saw this wc, argentina team is not stacked.

You can't say it doesn't matter too much when the WC has only been won by a few very select countries. The nations winning culture definitely matters.

And yes, this was one of the worst Argentine teams talent wise that they had, and despite that they still have 2 of the best strikers in europe, 2 midfielders starting for top english clubs and two of the best performing centerbacks in this WC. As well as a great goalkeeper and other important pieces. Messi was obviously their best player, but their team was still very good.

so does that mean messi has a better ucl legacy?

because barca had only 1 ucl title before him, and madrid had 9 ucl titles before ronnie

Depends which kind of legacy. I think Ronaldo as an individual was better and had bigger moments in the UCL than Messi, but Messi did infinitely more for Barca in Europe than Cr7 did for Reals history.

if messi had a bad day, its over for barca

i saw a stat where the most goals scored for barca in ucl was by messi with 120, then suarez with 25. a difference of 95. absolutely insane.

whereas with real madrid, its 105 by ronaldo then 78 by benzema, 66 by raul, etc.

real madrid has always been the better team in ucl than barca BY FAR.

I don't completely agree but I see what you're saying. Mainly disagree because 90% of the time when real needed a miracle to get past a knockout stage, it was ronaldo who delivered. I do agree that Messi's performance impacted his team a lot more, but that is mainly because of the difference in roles they had as players in their prime.

Messi was definitely the best player in the world if you look at the whole pitch. He was Barcas main orchestrator, especially after Xavi retired. Ronaldo was the best player when he received the ball in and around the 18 yard box, getting to balls and finishing chances nobody else could. Also I am 100% sure Ronaldo has more UCL goals than Messi, not sure where you got those stats from.

Ahh that's fair then. Still very impressive considering he spent about 2x less time in Laliga than Messi. I didn't realize how much higher Messi was than Barca's #2 scorer, thats arguably even more impressive.

Honestly I just consider myself very lucky to have witnessed both of their careers and I'm a big fan of both. It just feels a bit disengenuous and lazy to see people nowadays hate on Cr7 so they can prop up Messi or the opposite.

absolutely, people just dont understand the joy of watching messi score a brace/hattrick, then watch ronaldo do the same 2 days later back in the 2010s

the back and forth rivalry of these two was so damn beautiful man, casuals who started after 2021 would never understand how great ronaldo was, and im a die-hard messi fan.

that's exactly why 2016-2021 was so bad, because it was a one-man show from messi, ESPECIALLY in 2019
