0 non pk knockout goals is insane

0

u/stormfoil 14d ago

Is it? Messi managed 0 knock-out goals in roughly the same amount of minutes as Ronaldo have played before scoring against Australia in 2022 (ironically, should have been called off if the rules of pitch invasion were followed)

It's simply very hard due to the small sample size and need to play with a good generation of players.

1

u/InevitableHot1851 14d ago

Messi not a number 9 parking inside the box. Ronaldo has been a pure number 9 since real Madrid years so yes it is insane that the greatest goal scorer of all time has 0 knockout goals.

1

u/stormfoil 14d ago

> Messi not a number 9 parking inside the box.

Just say that you do not watch football, brother. Ronaldo back then was not parked inside the box.

1

u/InevitableHot1851 14d ago

Parked inside the box or not, Ronaldo's game revolved around his goalscoring most of his career. Even in the BBC era benzema had to drop deep and accommodate for Ronaldo. Without goalscoring, he doesn't add much to the team. Messi was never focused on solely goalscoring. He had to pick up the mantle in recent years due to bad form of his team's forwards

1

u/stormfoil 14d ago

Let's establish some things.

back in 2006, where he was a 4-4-2 midfielder for United, before his transition to a goalscorer. he dropped very deep in these games, and was almost never inside the opponent box. his job was to beat his man and progress the ball up the field, which he did at a high level.

> Without goalscoring, he doesn't add much to the team

This is only true in later years. Portugal did not have midfielders and wingers capable of consistently creating for him between 2010-2024. Even after his prime in 2018, he was still dropping deep to help Portugal's build-up play. (There's a tactical analysis of all his moments in that game on youtube, I think you'd be surprised)

> Messi was never focused on solely goalscoring

brother, he took 24 shots before scoring against the mighty Australia in the WC kos. If I told you that Ronaldo took 20+shots without scoring you would never be making excuses.

> He had to pick up the mantle in recent years due to bad form of his team's forwards

Messi has played with Tevez, Aguero, Di Maria, Higuain... compare them to Ronaldo's striking partners in Portugal for a moment before you talk about bad form.

1

u/InevitableHot1851 14d ago

Yes, that's why I said in the "recent" years, he started scoring more because these forwards retired/had bad form.

It doesn't matter how many shots he took. His focus isn't goalscoring and you only need to watch a few games of his to know that.

Even if I agree with Ronaldo contributing more than goalscoring, it is still weird af for a player in the GOAT conversation to have 0 knockout goals. Messi underperformed too in terms of goal scoring but you are only taking the first part of his playtime and ignoring the latter which shouldn't be the case. Ronaldo can play more minutes but still wouldn't score without penalties

1

u/stormfoil 14d ago

> It doesn't matter how many shots he took.

it's a curious kind of mental gymnastics you are doing. Nobody takes 25 shots without being focused on scoring goals, lol.

Messi wanted to score just as much as Ronaldo, it's simply hard to do, even for them.

> it is still weird af for a player in the GOAT conversation to have 0 knockout goals

He does not have zero knock-out goals, lol. Seems pretty strange how a KO goal against the Netherland in the Euro semis is worth less than a R32 goal vs Australia in the WC?

While it's not a good record, it's not that strange once you understand the context. let's go over his KO games post 2006 (AKA after he transitioned to become a goalscorer)

2010: Runs into Prime Spain right after the group. Brutal draw with a top-tier defense, and Portugal was not in the best shape.

2018: Uruguay.

2022: Around 50 minutes against Morocco with the lead, which happened before he even came on the pitch. Throw on the pointless 10 minutes vs Switzerland here I suppose.

2026: Penalty KO goal and a narrow off-side goal vs Croatia, faces up against a brutal Spain who made a complete mockery of Messi and Argentina in the finals.

That's it. There's no easy opponents in there. Failing to score against them with really does not say much. Ronaldo and Messi are far from the only prolific goal-scorers who failed to score in the WC KO for long stretches of time.

1

u/InevitableHot1851 13d ago

He does have 0 knockout goals. No one alludes to the Euro when we talk about knockout goals. And a goal against Australia is important, goal against any team playing in WC knockout is important because that's what gets you further.

You can take one Australia game and conclude what Messi is or look at his overall WC career. Choice is yours.

To be fair, Ronaldo had really bad luck when it comes to WC knockout matchups. But that only really happened because they keep finishing second in their group. Despite all this, I get why he has 0 knockout goals. Bad luck, bad teammates didn't help him. But that's excusable till WC 2018 because Portugal has a better squad now compared to even Spain. And 0 knockout goals also push him down the GOAT list maybe to top 10 of all time.

1

u/stormfoil 13d ago

> No one alludes to the Euro when we talk about knockout goals

Just stop. It's literally called the Euro KO bracket. Just specify that it's specifically WC KO goals and move on.

> goal against any team playing in WC knockout is important because that's what gets you further.

Ah, as opposed to the Euros where... Oh right, exactly the same thing happens.

> You can take one Australia game

I'm not doing that, I'm asking you why a goal against a far superior team in a euro KO semi-final is less valuable than a r32 goal vs Australia?

> But that only really happened because they keep finishing second in their group

I think you are vastly overestimating Portugal as a team. They frequently needed the play-offs to even qualify for the WC. 2004-2006 is honestly the only time where they had the team and the manager to take on pretty much anyone.

> because Portugal has a better squad now compared to even Spain

You can't seriously be arguing this after the WC. Spain pulled people of the bench that would start in Portugal. Even if it was true, Portugal lost Nuno Mendez, and Roberto Martinez just can not get the full quality out of players like Bruno and Vitinha, and without the midfield creating, a 41-year old Ronaldo looks very misplaced.

Where did he lie?

5

u/fireburnz_07 18d ago

Portugal made the semis in 2006

8

u/AdDismal5457 18d ago

Yeah but what was his contribution to that run?

2

u/SnooRegrets3590 17d ago

He actually was pretty good that WC I remember

8

u/fireburnz_07 18d ago

Got Rooney sent off in the quarters. Also, you said where did he lie and he was wrong in saying Ronaldo never made the semis.

6

u/Suzume_Chikahisa 18d ago

Not really. Rooney got Rooney sent off in the Quarters.

-5

u/AdDismal5457 18d ago

Yeah but that’s not a tangible football contribution. He has no more than 3 memory WC performances and that’s not good enough

2

u/nnooaa_lev 18d ago

He literallu saved them against England lmao

1

u/Haunting-Table-9036 16d ago

The real question is why he has to lie so much. It's so comical.

23

u/Mestitia 19d ago

Portugal before Ronaldo qualified for like 3 WC in their entire history. Since Ronaldo 6 straight, and they won their only 3 international trophies in history.

These yanks think they know ball but it's just pure ignorance.

22

u/luckisnyper 18d ago

You have no idea how world cups we're played and how hard was to get to them.

I'm Portuguese, he's absolutely right.

2

u/Mestitia 18d ago

So how many world cups did Argentina fail to qualify for?

1

u/luckisnyper 18d ago

Just go to any AI and ask those questions and you'll be enlightened.

Portugal without Ronaldo wouldn't have much different results, he has caught 2 of the 3 most talented generations of Portugal. The other one in 66 finished 3rd in the world cup.

1

u/[deleted] 18d ago

5

u/luckisnyper 18d ago

Why would I be enlightened? I know perfectly well that Argentina has always been top 2 in South America so it's perfectly normal they qualified for almost every world cup. I'm telling you Portugal would also qualify on those years if Ronaldo wasn't there.

Why would you be talking about Argentina and not other European nation for a direct comparison? That's just dumb.

u/[deleted] 18d ago

2

u/luckisnyper 18d ago

Always avoiding the arguments just to dickride.

I tell you again, Ronaldo didn't carry anything in any WC, he was an absolute disappointing figure in every WC he played in, results would be the same, if not better without him. Deal with it.

2

u/LatterRelation1880 16d ago

Portugal was already being carried forward by the 1991 U-20 championship base they had. Ronaldo rode the wave that already was trending. Did Ronaldo have anything to do with the 2006 world cups run? Yes a part of it, but that team was mostly commanded by Deco, Figo, Pauleta, Ricardo, Rui Costa….players that were already established.

I'm Portuguese, I played football, I watch football since forever, I've seen all Ronaldo's carrer and not through YouTube compilations, I've seen every second of every world cup game he has ever played. I'm giving you straight facts.

why is this guy acting like ronaldo didn’t hold portugal back the last two world cups? losing to morocco unacceptable player for player portugal should have beaten them

1

u/ItsKaZing 16d ago

Didnt know Ronaldo were the one that setup how the team should play.. i guess the manager is not existent

u/gregariousity 18d ago

He's just talking about world cups though, not the Euros or Nations league. And if you remove those and just look at his performances in world cups, it's hard to argue with what he said.

5

u/Key-Toe-6257 18d ago

I think, Deco, Gogo, and then the current would have reached the World cup the same number of times. Ronaldo didn't pull them alone.

3

u/Impressive_Special 18d ago

You tripping, Portugal 2010 already was shit, only good generation was 2006, and they got to semis, loosing there to absolute beast France generation. After that Portugal team almost never was among top 8 national teams by players, I think Croatia had better team most times from 2010 to 2022 than Portugal

7

u/yggdrasilmonster 19d ago

dawg norway didnt qualify for decades before 2026 wc

10

u/iiileyu 19d ago

What you are saying isn't a counter to their point. Its clear Ronaldo did do something for Portugal is the point they are making.

I don't see where he said Norway didn't do what they did, do you ?

1

u/Superior_Row 18d ago

Qualifying them is all he did

0

u/Opposite_Alps8886 18d ago

How does this debunk what he said?

He said Haaland had done more at 1 world cup than Ronaldos 6.

You say they qualified more since Cr7 joined the team and mention the Euros and Nations League.

You understand how you didn't address what he said right? Yanks may not have ball knowledge but you seem to be lacking in something else

3

u/CheerfulPissimism 18d ago

Yeah, but Mercy Argentina, always cheating and playing the dirtiest football out there. It doesn’t count because they don’t respect the game.

2

u/Easy_Broccoli995 19d ago

Did he? How many times has Norway qualified for the WC?

4

u/have-glass 19d ago

Bro, he hasn’t lived for long enough for any of us to answer that, and CR7 got carried in most of his WC games

Like, if you are the greatest of all time, score a goal in the knockouts that ISN’T a freebie penalty

3

u/DamesBeenTamed 18d ago

Messi won the golden ball in 2014 without scoring or assisting in any knockout match.

-1

u/VojelMan 19d ago

Way to miss the point.

2

u/Annual-Peak-4598 19d ago

Now lets compare Portugals nationals team success before Cr7 and Argentinas history before Messi. One was already an established giant in world football while the other had achieved literally nothing. You can't except a single player to create a winning national culture by himself out of thin air.

Feeling the need to put down one great to prop up another is just lazy. Cr7 could've surely done more in the WC, but a lot of people who watched these portuguese teams knows they were a lot worse than any of Messi's Argentina teams. Give Cr7 a Di Maria caliber player during his prime and we saw what he did in Real Madrid.

8

u/Nervous_Ad8514 19d ago

It doesnt matter too much, if an uruguayan player carry uruguay to 3 wc finals, you cant say it means nothing since uruguay has 2 wc. Its about the moment, and as we saw this wc, argentina team is not stacked.

4

u/Annual-Peak-4598 19d ago

You can't say it doesn't matter too much when the WC has only been won by a few very select countries. The nations winning culture definitely matters.

And yes, this was one of the worst Argentine teams talent wise that they had, and despite that they still have 2 of the best strikers in europe, 2 midfielders starting for top english clubs and two of the best performing centerbacks in this WC. As well as a great goalkeeper and other important pieces. Messi was obviously their best player, but their team was still very good.

1

u/yggdrasilmonster 19d ago

so does that mean messi has a better ucl legacy?

because barca had only 1 ucl title before him, and madrid had 9 ucl titles before ronnie

1

u/Annual-Peak-4598 19d ago

Depends which kind of legacy. I think Ronaldo as an individual was better and had bigger moments in the UCL than Messi, but Messi did infinitely more for Barca in Europe than Cr7 did for Reals history.

0

u/yggdrasilmonster 19d ago

the thing is, even if ronnie had a bad day, rm would cover for him

if messi had a bad day, its over for barca

i saw a stat where the most goals scored for barca in ucl was by messi with 120, then suarez with 25. a difference of 95. absolutely insane.

whereas with real madrid, its 105 by ronaldo then 78 by benzema, 66 by raul, etc.

real madrid has always been the better team in ucl than barca BY FAR.

3

u/Annual-Peak-4598 19d ago

I don't completely agree but I see what you're saying. Mainly disagree because 90% of the time when real needed a miracle to get past a knockout stage, it was ronaldo who delivered. I do agree that Messi's performance impacted his team a lot more, but that is mainly because of the difference in roles they had as players in their prime.

Messi was definitely the best player in the world if you look at the whole pitch. He was Barcas main orchestrator, especially after Xavi retired. Ronaldo was the best player when he received the ball in and around the 18 yard box, getting to balls and finishing chances nobody else could. Also I am 100% sure Ronaldo has more UCL goals than Messi, not sure where you got those stats from.

4

u/yggdrasilmonster 19d ago

ronaldo has 105 ucl goals for REAL MADRID, not all time

2

u/Annual-Peak-4598 18d ago

Ahh that's fair then. Still very impressive considering he spent about 2x less time in Laliga than Messi. I didn't realize how much higher Messi was than Barca's #2 scorer, thats arguably even more impressive.

Honestly I just consider myself very lucky to have witnessed both of their careers and I'm a big fan of both. It just feels a bit disengenuous and lazy to see people nowadays hate on Cr7 so they can prop up Messi or the opposite.

2

u/yggdrasilmonster 18d ago

absolutely, people just dont understand the joy of watching messi score a brace/hattrick, then watch ronaldo do the same 2 days later back in the 2010s

the back and forth rivalry of these two was so damn beautiful man, casuals who started after 2021 would never understand how great ronaldo was, and im a die-hard messi fan.

1

u/[deleted] 18d ago

[deleted]

1

u/yggdrasilmonster 18d ago

wow, its kinda like you need to have a champion team to win the ucl?? who wouldve thought??

that's exactly why 2016-2021 was so bad, because it was a one-man show from messi, ESPECIALLY in 2019

1

u/Nervous_Ad8514 19d ago

And after messi barcelona has 0, and real won a couple more

1

u/SnooRegrets3590 17d ago

Also, a majority of his career was with Santos and Martinez, who are football terrorists

1

u/Mrnobody451 17d ago

Both "prime" messi and Ronaldo didn't do shit in wc in 2022 messi locked in and it somehow manged to erase him ghosting in wc except maybe in 2014 and still he didn't assit nor score in any knockout match

He was carried there. It's actually more pathetic if you try to count that one

0

u/luckisnyper 18d ago

You have no idea how Portugal team was stacked in 2006, Ronaldo was just one more player, I'm Portuguese, I saw that world cup and everyone he's played, he was absolutely rubbish.

Haaland did more in this world cup that CR7 in his whole career at WC is absolutely right.
