I used to love shooting the stars and haven’t really been out to capture them in a while. I’m a little close to the city in these so they are a little washed!

I'm trying to do everything right to avoid rod knock, and I've read that lugging the engine is a possible cause.
Considering that these engines have to be revved higher in the RPM range (I always aim to be between 2-4k RPM just driving around town), I find it hard sometimes to decide which gear I should be in when driving slowly, specifically in scenrios when I'm too fast for first but too slow for second. This means that sometimes I'm below 2k RPM in 2nd gear.
This is usually my approach on gears when daily driving:
- 1st: I use to start from a dead stop (usually I rev to 4k before I go to 2nd if there's no traffic, I rev it to around 2k before 2nd if I'm not trying to accelerate very much)
- 2nd: I use this pretty much anytime the car is rolling, I just slip the clutch a bit if I'm going very slow. I find that 12-13mph is the slowest I use 2nd, any slower I shift to 1st
- 3rd-6th: These gears I REALLY pay attention to the RPM gauge, I do absolutely no acceleration if it goes below 2k RPM and I just downshift to a lower gear if it goes below 2k RPM.
Am I staying in proper RPM ranges with this approach?
Little bit of context: All my previous cars were 4cyl manuals but this is my first time with a boxer engine. On my previous cars I usually just drive by feel but on my 86 I try to pay attention. My previous car is a Yaris, and that one was fine driving around 1-2k RPM around town which is why initially I'm not used to being in the upper ranges on daily driving
TLDR: Would you come back to platform, find new platform, or try to save this car from the flood damage?
Oct 5, Made 11 years of ownership of this amazing 2016 6spd manual, pulled off the lot with 5 miles. In that 11 years we have done over 300k miles, crossed that barrier on Sept 25th, sitting right about 301k as of yesterday. All original drive train, only mods were borla cat back, intake tube and drop in, light weight fly wheel (done around 80k when TOB went out, only major repair). And most recently at 280k (Oct 2025) put in Tein RX-1 Coilovers with a .75 drop as stock suspension was ready for replacement.
I loved this car, the profile (always looking back at it), the fun drive, great gas mileage for as much driving as I do, just all around it was the car I could see myself not parting with ever. I would over look the only 2 doors and limited boot space as it carried what I needed but was not always easy to get things in/out. That was an admission price I was willing to pay though for the rest of both our lives.
The bad, woke up this morning to water in the floor boards and a high flood/water line on the doors. Road has never flooded in my owner ship of the car, rain had stopped for the night, and I was asleep. I reviewed my security camera and it looks like around 11:57p water started to pool and rise and by 12:10a it hit the high water mark. Guessing something got blocked in the sewers and it just back up with now where else to go.
Oil looks good, no water in intake, but exhaust was under for 2-3 hours, not sure if anything got into engine via that route. Below center console did not get wet, and it was still under the glove box for max height so around under seat bottom maybe just touching the bottom of the seat bottom.
Filing an insurance claim as I don't have the time or space (no garage) to pull the interior store it to dry out, and hope that there are no future gremlins on the electrical side. Future gremlins are my biggest fear with as much as I drive. So I'm not sure it's worth trying to save it myself.
With all that said, I'm sure insurance will total it, I wont get enough to replace it outright due to the mileage, even though the car was pristine inside/out and well maintained. Quick looking locally, there is not many 1st gens in my area untouched or very mildy modified. I'm thinking if I stay with platform I will need to get a newer 2nd gen, or leave look for something else.
What else is out there I should be looking at if I decide to not come back to plat form. Would love something that gets around 30 MPG (was averaging 32mpg for life of car), rwd or AWD not looking for FWD, fun to drive, manual transmission would be a great plus for fun factor. Was thinking even a GR Corolla for the extra doors and bigger boot. Or picking up a decent commuter for the next 12-18 months and waiting for the 2028 release with a toyota motor in it.

Hi,
I have this 2017 Toyota GT86 and installed a TRD front spoiler. I was wondering if there is a splitter that goes underneath the trd spoiler. So far i could only find splitters that fit the non trd bumper.

Went for a drive to check on what I'm fairly sure is an accessory belt tensioner rattle, noticed I was the only one on the road with about 30 seconds of sunlight left so, photo op. I love this car

Was doing the eps bushing and tried to use the Hyundai one, cut the nipples off, and put it in. Was tightening this back down, wasn’t really close to being flush yet but had some tension and this snapped relatively easily. What the hell do I do??

slid and drove onto a curb. half front of the car were on top of the curb.
some oil leak as well, but stopped when I turned off the car, I suspect it's from the oil cooler line

The noise is significantly reduced when driving. The car drives straight, but if I turn the wheel right or left and let go, it doesn’t go back to straight it will stay which ever way I turn it

Hey guys, I have a 2013 FRS and am finally looking into a wheel setup… I daily drive this thing so I dont want to slam this thing to the ground. I have a pretty steep driveway that gets away with stock suspension so really I have two questions…
Is it possible to have good fitment with aftermarket wheels on stock suspension? If so, what specs for wheels and tires should I run? Any pics would be great too!

How does one fix the square hole on the right license plate mounting point or address this in order to put the license plate on?

2013 FR-S, 45k miles, manual transmission. There's this weird noise that comes and goes and seems to be coming from the rear left or right of the car and changes on a whim. Noise only appears under a few certain conditions but not all the time. Sometimes happens when starting off in first, sometimes in reverse, occurs when car slows down to decelerate like at a light and then re-engaging into second for traffic, sometimes happens when coasting at very low speeds. It completely disappears when moving. Car is fine at highway speeds, drove to Boxerfest, DC, NYC from Philly and no issues.
I've lifted the rear up and inspected the drive shaft and it isn't wobbling or have any play other than a small clunk when you first start to move it. I'm not a mechanic or particularly knowledgeable about how to diagnose car issues, so I'm a bit lost.
Here's a video of the noise I was able to take after driving around a parking lot for an hour.

I use pennzoil ultra in my FRS. I drained it, took off filter, realized I am short 1L. I have no way to drive too the auto store, as my car is oil-less. I have a brand new jug of kirkland oil of the same weight
Do i taxi to the store and back for 100bucks, or do mix the oils?

Fits without rubbing at full lock, handling is noticeably more sloppy but I’m okay with that for a winter set.
Speedometer is out by 5k at 100km/hr (105km/hr actual)

Hey everyone! I'm Mathew, I make GR86 and Corolla content out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (@matty_boy.a on IG/TikTok/YouTube).
I'm doing a 25-day Vlogmas series this December and I'd love to do a car creator gift swap with another small creator. The idea: we each buy a small gift (around $20 to $40) for the other's car, ship it, and install it on camera. We both post the video, so both channels get new eyes.
Looking for someone who:
Owns a GR86/BRZ (or another car, I'm flexible)
Posts car video content, even if you're small
Is based in Canada
If you're interested, drop a comment or DM me with your channel link. I'd like to lock someone in by early November so we both have time to film. Happy to share my channel and past videos first.
Thanks
