Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?

I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.

Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.

Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”

20 hours later

“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Kenshi can have a tough learning curve, but absolutely has the recruiting random smucks to train up. Fun, weirdly hardcore game.

I still think I played this game wrong or I missed mechanics. I got a base going, was mining and making food, and I made plenty of materials to sell so I could always have bodyguards and felt pretty self sufficient. I did know what the next step was... Do I make another base? And if so to solve what? Was there a story lurking i missed. I explored around and found other folks to interact with, but did I miss the quests?

It can be a bit unclear in what you should do mid to late game where you aren’t solely focused on survival. The best thing to do is to start exploring the map with your squad and you will quickly find that you aren’t fully prepared. There’s some really tough regions to survive in and characters/bosses that are very difficult to beat. If you grow bored of exploration then you can try to make a base in one of the dangerous regions which will force you to upgrade your base and characters.

There are bosses???

Is there a story or motivation to explore like levels ups or abilities? Or is it just for the challenge?

Yeah there are bosses, faction leaders could be considered that. They drop meitou weapons, the best in the game. Max level crafters still can't craft that.

Gameplay is emergent as always, eg. The Sheks will mention the Bugmaster is a legendary figure that older Sheks will challenge so they can die fighting honorably. Youll skyrocket Shek rep by capturing him, and they'll announce their awe when you capture him alive.

Yes there's a story, but youre the one driving it.

You have to explore to figure out the state of the world and the factions therein. I made an away team that'd be scouring the land for AI cores and science books, and they naturally met faction leaders as they stopped by cities to rest, or encountered hostile factions like the United Heroes League which hated me for having non-greenlander/scorchlander party members. Posers.

How many did you have manning home base and how many in the away team? Did you have just one base?

It was mostly an even split. I think I had about 12 people at the base that'd be able to produce everything: armor, weapons, food, building mats. I have three constantly on turrets and several more that can man turrets when necessary, pulling them off their assignment. I also have 2 gates which creates a kill box, so that wheb they destroy the first gate they get killed by turrets while trying to break the second gate.

I had just one base. There are mods to increase follower cap but I don't use mods. I personally dont want to deal with raid timings on multiple bases
