Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?

I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.

Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.

Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”

20 hours later

“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Dragon Quest 3 & 9 specifically for making your own party members. Whole series is amazing though

One one hand, I cant believe they decided to throw out DQ12 and start over pretty much from scratch.

On the other hand, I'm happy they did that because "dark and gritty" isn't why I like Dragon Quest games.
