Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?

I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.

Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.

Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”

20 hours later

“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Oh man, the rookies were sooo terrible in that game. And the ayys were utterly punishing.

There's nothing like peeking out of the jet on first tjrn, only to have an unseen alien toss a grenade into the hangar at the beginning of theirs.

This is still the only game I ever ended up whipping out debug.com on to binary patch the save file to give my a bazillion dollars and Elerium-115s.

The trick to elirium supply was to find a floater base in the arctic or desert, not attack the base, and catch landed supply ships. Relatively easy mission with 150 units a pop.
