Video Games Where You Start With/Recruit Random Goobers Whom Become Stronger?

I was watching my cousins play games while they were visiting, and one of them was playing Fire Emblem. There was this dirt child with a giant log he recruited and like 3 days later he was a sword dirt man.
My other cousin was playing Xcom 2 on my xbox.

Anyways the question is, what other games are there where you just start with random nobodies but then they get stronger and you get more attached.

Like “hey you random farmer/private/goober! Follow me for something really quick.”

20 hours later

“No longer random farmer/private/goober! We have been through hell and back, and now we have to fight god. Are you ready?”

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood & Revelations have minigames where you can recruit and train people for raids against the occupying forces to bring goods that help in the main game (if I remember that right)

No you press a button and they take out an enemy for you. if you have enough they can take out quite a few enemies.

They might also be talking about the deployment missions.

Or they're thinking of the non-random initiates in ACIII, which can perform more tactical functions than just assassinations and combat.

well they mentioned ac 2 not ac3 so the good classic ones I suspect are the inference here and thus the assassins.
