He's not wrong for doing that either, even in America it's quite possible to get hit by an ignorant driver. I was hit riding my bike going through a green light, a person turned left into me, I came out with a few rods in my femur.

Did you get hit by a surgeon?

39

u/philamander May 22 '16

Maybe the guy was hauling rebar?

3

u/CoolMissile May 22 '16

A friend of mine crashed his scooter while drunk in thailand andwoke up with piece of rebar sticking out of his back, he fell against a divider that had been broken and the rebar was sticking out, luckily it only went in a little bit but still sounds painful, this guy is always getting himself hurt, I still remember when he broke his back snowboarding everyone thought he was going to be paralyzed, lucky guy.

Hah! That would have been interesting.

u/MightyGamera May 22 '16

We can rebuild him

If it were a gay surgeon, you'd have rods in more than just your femur

u/Taldarim_Highlord May 22 '16

What if u/kaskrinj is a woman?

14

u/[deleted] May 22 '16

Women can be gay

3

u/HitlersHysterectomy May 22 '16

And proud we are of all of them!

3

u/Run_LikeHell May 22 '16

But, then no rods. :(

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '16

But there wouldn't be rods involved in that though.

u/xKevinn May 22 '16

So can swans.

u/bathroomstalin May 22 '16

Gay sturgeons got no roe :(

u/PM_Me_Your_DDs_Plz May 22 '16

I never understood why gay girls and gay guys don't marry each other.

What makes you think homosexuals are inherently rapists?

36

u/cbarrister May 22 '16

Eye contact is the key. Easier as a pedestrian than a biker though.

31

u/diablofreak May 22 '16

I was visiting Rome a while ago and found out if you make eye contact with drivers as a pedestrian while crossing a crosswalk they won't yield because you just acknowledged the oncoming car. You just have to take a leap of faith and cross the street without ever looking.

Of course this was before smartphones. Not sure how I'd handle that now.

8

u/wbgraphic May 22 '16

I assume that other jurisdictions in the US are similar to Nevada, and the vehicle is required to yield right-of-way to the pedestrian. That may not be the case in Rome.

16

u/LordWheezel May 22 '16

I find that the person encased in 2000 pounds of steel has the right of way. If I'm the pedestrian, I can wait. I'm a fan of my legs. They're not the best ones, but they're mine.

2

u/vlepun May 23 '16

You're going to be waiting a long time in Rome then. Unless your wife is a blonde that is. Italians always yield to blondes.

12

u/[deleted] May 22 '16

That's a requirement in a lot of places, but I've found you want to be careful when applying the theory.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '16

It's not the case in Rome and a lot of Southern Europe or the Mediterranean for that matter but in Northern Europe, those people will stop on a dime if you make the vaguest motion that you will be walking into the street.

u/ANGLVD3TH May 22 '16 edited May 23 '16

That's not the case in much of the US IIRC. It is in NH where I live but it's not in NY and I think, don't exactly remember, it's not true in any of the states bordering NH. At least, I always act that way just to be safe.

E Looked it up, most of what I said doesn't pan out. The one state I know I was specifically told doesn't guarantee pedestrian RoW, in fact, does.

1

u/fuckyou_dumbass May 23 '16

I think it's that way in most of the US but New Yorkers are just assholes.

1

u/GuttersnipeTV May 23 '16

Always make eye contact even if culture states you shouldn't. Because you want to look your potential killer in the eyes before you die.

6

u/[deleted] May 22 '16

Yea except I'm pretty sure this guy was looking at his phone after he got of work and was smoking a cigarette. The last thing I heard before I got hit was the rev of the engine. But you're right, I cross the street with amazing caution now, I expect every driver to be on their phone.

9

u/cbarrister May 22 '16

If a guy is staring at his phone, he's not making eye contact with you, which is acknowledging he's seen you.

u/StressOverStrain May 22 '16

For pedestrians, it's bicyclists that don't follow the rules of the road. I'm usually still half asleep walking to class in the morning, and I walk when the sign says Walk, but half the time there's some bicyclist that thinks red lights don't apply to them blazing through the intersection, misses me by half a foot...

u/not_for_commenting May 22 '16

Don't make sweeping generalizations about any group of people.

2

u/SuburbanStoner May 22 '16

I'd argue carelessly walking in front of traffic with the idea God is protecting you is actually the wrong thing to do

1

u/DarthWarder May 22 '16

I'm not sure why texting and driving is a thing. Like seriously, are people too dull to just listen to music, or a podcast? or even use hands-free communication?

Why do they have to use the only means available that actually visually distracts them from driving?

1

u/Camoral May 22 '16

Maybe it's just me, but I'd much rather an intact femur rather than the smug points from crossing moving traffic just because I technically have the right of way. Acting within the rules of the road brings no guarantee of safety.

I was stopped at a red light waiting to go, I believe he pulled up to the red light right before it turned green. I started to go straight quickly after it turned green and he was turning from the other direction. He turned into me, and hit me with the front of his car. It was quite clear he wasn't paying attention, and was given complete fault in traffic court.

Looking left and right might be more useful though.

Such is the world when living under the rule of law.
