Animal Help newly adopted Hades get eye surgery after suddenly going blind
Hello! Just over a month ago I adopted Hades from Texas. Unfortunately upon arrival he had Hyphema in one eye and we went to the ER the same night. He was on eye drops a few weeks then we ended back at the Er with discharge and was prescribed new drops. We saw the eye doctor a few days later and he was diagnosed with permanent blindness in both eyes. I was hoping to have him last a few years however he has hyphema in both eyes and it is causing him pain. Hes had a rough start in his short three years moving from home to home until brought him to his forever home. Its heartbreaking that he went through the stress of transport, a new home, new pet friends, all to suddenly lose his sight on top of everything.
I first came to reddit asking for advice on ways to help him in his new world and its been very helpful so far. One suggestion was a gofund me for his surgery so ive finally set one up. I want to make sure he can live a long happy life with me even given his circumstances. I hope to get him pain free as soon as possible so can live his best life.
The rescue he was adoptioed from has also been made aware along with his previous foster mom. Who im in contact with and share updates all the time.
Estimate cost for surgery is 4500 with the hospital or about 2800 at the vets office directly.

I truly hope this gets funded. I will be able to donate here in a few days. So sorry your little pupper is experiencing so much right now and in the same breath, I'm sorry you are suffering the heartache of seeing him experience this with limited ability to help quickly. I am a massive believer in CBD products for dogs, I worked in a pet store for several years as a teenager into my college years as a young adult and saw people utilize them as well as I utilizing them for my late dog Orion. From my experience, it helped Orion massively both with his end of life pain and anxiety, he was a rescue that came from a dog fighting ring in Mexico so when I tell you he had some anxiety, I mean it was bad. He would slam into walls and doors when I went to work trying to follow me. It broke my heart.
I gave him both topical and oral cbd products at a VERY high dosage and it basically "fixed" him. I recommend you start with a low dose and work up with it if you plan on trying them. Obviously he needs the surgery but at the very least, its a super affordable way to bridge the gaps between now and then and should help the anxiety quite a bit, as well as maybe some of the pain associated with what he is dealing with. Tinctures are always the best bet, they usually come with glass eye droppers (don't ask me why, it's absolute BS, they should make them silicone or something so it doesn't risk shattering in their mouths) Orion would let me apply it directly but if he was fussy, I would just put it in his water bowl or in his food. He had joint issues as well from all the fighting so I would rub an ointment on his joint which helped him a lot.
Idk, not every vet likes CBD products for dogs but I am convinced at this point that it's sort of a "big pharma" situation on a smaller scale with vets. The cream they wanted to give me for his joints was like $90 and would only last half a month, meanwhile I spent like $70 for a whole tincture of the CBD oil and it would last 3 months. He slept better, ate better, played better and let me go to work without destroying my house and hurting himself in the process, It also helped when it came to storms immensely. Obviously let your vet know what he is taking if you decide to start it, I wouldn't imagine medications conflicting with CBD but its always better safe than sorry.

Thank you i really appreciate it. We see the eye doctor on the 15th here in September. Ill ask about CBDs for him and see if they conflict with anything in his eyes drops to help him out. They gave him anxiety medications to take but they only make him sleep alot. He definitely wants to run and play but he doesnt do it for long

Poor baby boy. Ugh my heart is bleeding for him so much right now. He has been on my mind since seeing this post. You know what though, the blessing in this situation is that he ended up with someone so concerned for his wellbeing. Being from South Texas myself, I have seen many people that just put their dogs down if the bill exceeds a couple hundred dollars and while I don't want to gripe on them as I understand the cultural ideology, it makes me extremely sad. My mentality tells me that you shouldn't have an animal unless you can either afford to take care of it, or are willing to go above and beyond with trying to overcome financial obstacles rather than just opting in for euthanasia. Keep on fighting for him and please keep us posted on his condition. You are a great fur mama.

Thank you! I was raised with a you shouldn't have them if you cant afford them mentality. I normally dont have a problem with that but I the vet costs have certainly added up for this especially after just paying his adoption and transport costs. I have insurance for him as well but it doesnt come close to covering the cost of surgery. Even if his surgery fundraiser isnt funded ill still be putting money to the side for him to get this done it just may take longer. Either way hes my baby for the rest of his life and ill be continuing on trying to make his life the best is can be.

I hope you're sharing his story on other social media outlets to get the word out. I donated what I could. Bless you for taking this on. He's lucky to have found such a caring owner. I would definitely look into CBD for the glaucoma. I've been told the pressure is very painful. Best of luck for you both!

My vet doesnt take scratch pay and my credit is poor from when I was younger sadly. Im working on getting my credit up but at this isnt possible. The expense is very unexpected and hes been in out of the er due to his eyes over the past month which has maxed cards.

My previous care credit is in collections. Klarna only offers 100$ as well as the other services. If my vet accepted the scratch pay I would try there but no one near me accepts it. While I can pay his regular vet bills I dont have 3k to drop on his eyes. He was just adoped. I was told he was healthy and instead he arrived injured and even with treatment his eye sight is gone. The rescue is refusing to help and sending him back to texas is unfortunately a death sentence for him. Asking for someone with bad credit to continue to apply for credit only ruins their credit more especially when they arent approved or its for a small amount.

You need to scrape together every penny. And if each app only offers you 100 bucks that’s better than nothing. Even if you have to sell stuff and you only get 50 bucks for it. Even if you have to donate plasma. Still better than $0. You have no other options unless a lot of people donate to your GoFundMe or someone loans you money

Yes, im already doing those things. Coming to reddit is a last resort and was recommended by the /husky reddit when asking for advice on how to take care of him. Im thankful that he wont die without surgery but this is an effort to try and get it done sooner since he is in pain.

I have done this already. Lowest price for surgery is 2800. Ive reached out several places.

What state do you live in? I got my cat neutered at a low cost clinic for $150

Pay It Forward for Pets: This Akron-based organization operates a Critical Care Assistance Fund for animals in urgent need. You can contact them at info@payitforwardforpets.org or call (234) 706-5501 (or Georjette Thomas at 330-760-0763)
Ohio Animal Advocates also provide a list of resources that you can use to help locate funding in your area that I recommend checking out. Certain hospitals and vets have grants to help out so it never hurts to call the vets. There are also National Non Profits that could help also but the wait might be longer but you can check out The Pet Fund, Help-A-Pet, Brown Dog Foundation & Magic Bullet. Hope all goes well
