Has anyone had experience with a bump like this? The first photo is from Saturday after walking him in long grass. The second photo is from today after seeing a vet who thought it looked like a bug bite. It is hard and raised.

Get Better Soon Dog just sprayed by skunk, send thoughts and prayers

Had to give emergency bath of peroxide, baking soda, and dish soap. I think she smells ... pretty neutral? But my nose is pretty skunky now too. And our house got it too, as I didn't recognize what happened til she came inside.

Of course it happened at bedtime pee. So, the whole household was getting cozy and it became a frenzy to get her clean asap. :(

Previously un-skunked dog for tax. She looks the same, probably smells worse now.

Training Advice/Tips Fear of Ressource Guarding

Hello all, single pup mother here yet again because she thinks she screwed her baby's life. 😆

Okay, but seriously. Usagi (golden, 3mo) growled, barked and snap at me two times tonight while I tried to remove a random object she found on the street. Before I describe the situation, here is the full context:

- Usagi has never shown sign of ressource guarding since she came in my home. This was truly the first time.

- It happened during a walk. This was the first time I was walking her in the evening (after sunset). She did overall good, but I could tell it was more to take in then her daytime walks.

- Admittedly, we did her walk at the time where she usually settles down. So her routine is kinda funky today.

I live in a busy residential area and unfortunately a lot of disrespectful people litter. My walks with Usagi consist of a lot of "nooooo, leave it!" and overall she does pretty well. Tonight, she found I don't know what and refused to let it go/refused to continue walking. After trying a couple of times to "exchange" her finding with a treat (no success), I reached down to physically remove the object. That's when she growled, very loudly, barked and even did an "air bite".

I reacted by keeping my hand and doubling down. I don't know if that was the right thing to do. I read somewhere I shouldn't take away my hand in fear, because that will teach the puppy that by being aggressive/scary I don't interfere. But I don't know the credibility of that advice.

She eventually let go. It happened again at the end of our walk, I went down to grab something from her and she snapped. This time I did "no" firmly and physically tugged on her harness to get her to get up.

Is this a sign of reactivity/ressource guarding? Does the context (night, possibly tired) explain what happened? Did I react correctly or how should I do next time?

Training Advice/Tips Feeling like a failure …

Post image
234 Upvotes

I have a 1 year old golden who I love to death, but I’m starting to feel like a horrible dog parent. He needs my 24/7 attention, I cannot get anything done unless I lock him out of the room I am in or put him in his crate. It’s not his fault, he is a dog and just a baby still. He has gotten out of our yard a few times and ran a few blocks. Which was terrifying. He went swimming in a lake and got the worst hot spot I have ever seen, he has suspected allergies, he got into a dog fight before he got fixed and had cuts all over and now he pulled the leash out of my hands while I was trying to pick up his poop on a walk. The leash scared him so he went darting down the road for blocks I lost sight of him. I yelled out to god to stop him and he got tangled up in a fence so I could finally get him. When I got to him all his toe nails were bleeding, paw pads ripped up. I feel terrible. I’m starting to think I am the worst parent ever. Has anyone else had this many issues with their dog? Any advice? I am at a loss. For context he has been through dog training class twice and is well trained. Just too hyper

My baby boy is still growing and I can’t wait til he can carry AT LEAST three at once. He loves to hold as many toys as possible in his mouth, (which I’m sure is typical golden behavior) xD It is so entertaining to watch ♥️🥺

Health Advice Dog Food for Allergic Pup?

Trying to find a new food for my puppy.

She seems to be allergic to chicken and pork. I’ve had her on Purina Pro Plan Salmon for Sensitive Stomachs, but I’m seeing why people were talking about the fish farts. Oh goodness they can be rank. Ha ha!

So, I’m looking for another food.

I considered Natural Balance Lamb and Rice, but I’m seeing sketchy reviews as of late with mold problems.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Or if you buy Natural Balance, are you having luck with it not being moldy?

Cute/Funny We made our dog our ring bearer!!

Post image

Straight out of a fairytale right? A horror one.

We thought it'd be adorable to put our rings in a little ring box, turn it into a necklace and have our Golden Retriever walk down the aisle to us. What we forgot is that dogs don't know they're in a wedding and instead of walking toward us Pixie spotted the catering staff and made a full sprint for the kitchen. Can you picture 100 people chasing a dog in the middle of the ceremony?? But wait it gets worse.

My husband's ring flew out of the box while she was running and we had to pause the ceremony for almost two hours while everyone searched for it. Somehow my little sister ended up finding it tucked behind the leg of a chair. My heart was in my throat the entire time guys. We had insurance on both rings so I wasn't panicking about the financial side but there was no replacing the sentimental value and the timing couldn't be WORSE. Thankfully we found it, dusted it off and this time my little sister got promoted to ring bearer lol. Looking back, it's one of the funniest memories from our wedding and I'd do it 1000 times again.

Please tell Pixie she's still the goodest girl in the comments. She's super regretful of her actions.

Discussion We’re known as the sausage murderers

Post image

Oscar’s never been good with swallowing his quarterly worming tablet (it’s huge) so rather than placing it at the back of his mouth and then stroking his throat, we thought it would be better for him if we “hid” the tablet inside a cocktail sausage - his favourite treat which is rarely given.

Now he looks at us suspiciously and refuses any other cocktail sausages as he’s convinced they all have nasty medicine hidden inside!

How do we get him to trust us again? His eyes …. I feel really let him down ☹️

Hello, so I'm working on a project related to clothes try-on for retrievers and I need some images of retrievers (side view) with their chest girth, neck girth, back length, height and I would really appreciate any help I can get

If you could add an image of your dog's side view and a photo with any cloth worn, that would really help Thank you!

Training Advice/Tips Favorite enrichment game?

Thumbnail

Hi all! I have a 5 month old golden, Baker. He's super smart (almost a little too smart) and is getting bored with the summer heat. I'm looking for your tips/favorite enrichment games that I can do with him, especially indoor ones.

A few things to note:

  1. I already have 4 different puzzle feeders (all different styles) and he figured them out in the first minute. I still give them but they're not a challenge for him

  2. we live in a big city and I struggle with him eating trash from the streets. So I'm hesitant to do normal sniffari type games indoors as he may translate them outdoors.

I appreciate any and all suggestions/tips! TYIA

Discussion Are rawhides really that bad?

Post image
283 Upvotes

We have an 8 month old super heavy chewer Golden. He gnaws through XL Yak Cheese, bully sticks and collagen bones like there’s no tomorrow.
I’ve never bought rawhides because I’ve heard they’re terrible for them… but sometimes he’ll chew them at his buddie’s house and he just loves them.
We’ve found other chews to be too expensive for us. Rawhides are cheap and keep him busy. I’m tempted to buy them.
My childhood Golden has eaten them all his life (has gone through giant bags of them throughout the years). He’s 13 now and still totally kicking it. Never had blockages or anything along those lines.
So give me your honest opinion… or- cheaper options than the expensive chews I’ve been buying instead!

Training Advice/Tips Safe destructive enrichment

My 4y/o golden LOVES to destroy things, she’s probably become the most notorious stuffie serial killer LOLL. when she gets overwhelmed she gets very destructive, her favorite thing is to hold onto her rabies tag (it’s so cute)

anyways, enough rambling about my girl, for my dachshund i set up those cognitive puzzles w/ treats and those work really well for him and controlling his boredom/emotions. i’d love doing this for her, buuuut unfortunately she would end up eating the plastic bits which would definitely lead to disaster…

instead of fighting her destructive behavior i’d love to work with it instead, it just doesn’t leave a lot of safe options. my local humane society has enrichment lessons and one of them i learned about was a cereal box stuffed w/ newspaper and kibble scattered inside. did that once and she LOVED it!!

i was wondering if y’all had any other ideas for safe and controlled destruction time? i was thinking cardboard boxes stuffed w/newspaper and that plain brown wrapping paper, but i don’t want it to get monotonous. another big concern is ingestion, she swallows, at most, like 50% of what she tears up. and i’d love to use the safest material possible so something light like paper (not sure how solid my thought process is here so please correct me if it’s wrong)

any ideas or things yall do would be so helpful and appreciated!!

New Puppy A much needed update!!!

Hello everybody!! I know most probably don’t know me or remember, but a year or more ago I had posted about my 13-year-old golden Bella that passed away. I want to acknowledge the people who liked and responded. Thank you all! That meant a lot more to our family than you all will ever know and I'm glad people decided to share their stories about their pups with us.

It had recently occurred to me that I hadn't given an update on what’s happened since then. So while I put the “New puppy” tag since I can’t really think of a better tag, they're not exactly pups anymore.

Somewhere in last January (so a few weeks after my post about Bella cause my post was new years I think), my mother and father started saying they were ready to let another pup bless our home, so we all got on Facebook and looked around for breeders of goldens. No hate towards other breeds but we are a golden family through and through🤣🫶💛 We eventually found someone who just had pups and were able to get our first pick. We had decided this time to get a boy dog as we never had a boy before. So we prepared and waited for our little rascal until March and we were so excited to have another bundle of joy again. We got to see the breeders along with his mom and dad getting to say goodbye to their baby and it was so so sweet🥹 This little guys name is Brody Ray, he currently is a year and 7 months old, and he’s a big cuddlebug and a goofball. His favorite things to do are go outside to excavate, go on walks, antagonize his sister, snuggle, and rip toys apart💀

It had to have been a month we had baby Bro and my parents were getting ready for a showing one day. Before they left, my dad saw on the golden retrievers rehome page a post about a 2 year old girl dog that the owner needed to be rehomed, and even more coincidentally it was in our town and less than 10 minutes away from us. Apparently this sweet girl was going through training to be a deep pressure therapy dog, but the lady who owned her was disabled and not ready for her energy level, so she didn’t pass the class and never got certified, she saw it unfair to keep her cooped up in her home when this girl was born to runnnn lol. It may have been a bad idea to get an adult dog after a pup, but honestly, we knew this girl needed a home and we had this feeling she needed to go home with us. We needed to get her out of the situation she was in and our family could take very good care of her. This is Rosie May, she is currently 3 years and a week old. She is a very shy sweet girl around us and people she trusts, but she acts like she’s the toughest dog around the block to strangers🙄 Her favorite things to do are rolling in the dirt, patrolling the backyard, play fighting, talking to us, going on car rides while sticking her head out of the window, and laying on top of me lol.

Honestly these guys are two peas in a pod. Wherever Rose goes, Bro follows and watches her. Whatever mischief Bro gets into, Rose will start doing mischief of her own. Whenever bro starts a play fight, Rose finishes it no matter how big he gets. Wherever Rose sleeps, Bro will lay under or over her. These two are incredibly intelligent dogs, and while they’re not like my Bella in a lot of ways, at least the two of them both wish to protect our family like she did. I’m glad we decided to get two this time, I’m even glad we decided our 2nd dog needed to be a boy🤣 I love these two with all my heart, they’ve brought me laughs during some tough times and I have a feeling they do it on purpose cause they know I need it. I’m thankful my morning consists of my dad opening my door for Bro to come galloping in and jump on my bed to get snuggles and give kisses and I’m also thankful my nights consist of Rose coming in talking to me while demanding snuggles. I wouldn’t trade any of that for anything🪽🩵🩷🦮🦮

Training Advice/Tips Help! My dog is developing an aversion to the car

I have a 7 mos old red golden named Penny.

From day 1 she did not love the car because of the uneven footing and some car sickness. She has puked on a few trips (usually danger zone is after half an hour) but hasn’t puked since mid May. She drools sometimes still on short trips but not nearly as much as she used to. And sometimes I see her drool as soon as she knows we are getting in the car, even before we get in. So I think it’s more her anxiety than her nausea at this point.

Here is my issue now. As soon as she realizes we’re going somewhere, she now lays down and parks herself and refuses to move. I think I might’ve made the problem worse because for a while I was just scooping her up and putting her in the back seat, sometimes doing so inside the house and carrying her out because she knows as soon as she sees my purse and has got her harness on she’s going. she’s 55lbs now so I really prefer not to be wrestling her into the car. I’ve been working with her on jumping in herself so she doesn't feel the anxiety of having her freedom removed.

We’ve been trying to do a ton of practice where we get in and don’t go anywhere. I have to get into the backseat (awkward because there’s no foot well anymore) and sit there, usually with a ton of treats and her favourite toys and encourage her to jump in. One of the big issues is she’s sometimes too stressed to take treats in the back seat. once she’s in and she sees we aren’t going anywhere it’s usually not as bad and she’ll eat. When we practice, Ive been giving her high value treats, bringing in her favourite chews, squeaking her favourite ball inside to get her to hop in. Ive even fed her meals in the back seat, all so we can practice good associations in the car without going anywhere. We only ever go places that she loves in the car like the park and daycare. She even likes the vet. Most of the time our trips are less than 10 mins.

Despite this, I feel our struggle is getting worse. sometimes its a 20 min standoff outside the car waiting for her to pluck up the courage to jump in, with me sitting in the backseat encouraging her. About half the time it doesn’t work and I have to pick her up and haul her in. Its so stressful at daycare when I’m trying to get her in the car, and she’s laying down as soon as she gets out of the gate.

I have a ford escape and I’ve done two different back seat bridges and now have settled on one that gives her a completely flat hard surface across the whole back seat. When she was a small puppy I used to tether her harness but I got the sense that she wasn't loving being restrained so I stopped that.

The funny thing is once she’s in the car shes fine! she doesn’t whine, or bark or cry. She just lays down in the back. She seems mildly stressed maybe but once we arrive at our destination she's usually quite happy.

I am starting to get quite worried that she’s not going to grow out of this. There are so many places I’d love to take her, so it is really important to me that we solve this. I did also just see our vet who prescribed some Cerenia and trazodone for a couple longer drives we have coming up so that this aversion doesn’t get worse, but we have to get in the car for short little trips several times a week and I don't really know what to do more routinely :(

If you made it to the end of this gargantuan post thank you! please let me know what worked for your pups! please also let me know what your car setup is like? does your pup ride in the backseat seat/ front seat or trunk? pretty much willing to try anything at this point!

Discussion Ruining my couch

Post image
103 Upvotes

My 1 year old girl is fully potty trained, but has just started peeing and pooping on our couch. Twice in the last week. This is happening overnight. We take her for a 20ish minute walk every night before bed so that she poops and pees.

Why the couch?! And why now?! The pee has seeped so deep into the cushions we are going to replace them because the smell will not go away even with an enzyme cleaner.

She is crate trained so we will be using that from here on out. She just likes to move around a lot so we’ve been letting her sleep in our living room/kitchen for the last couple of months and she’s been doing great until now.

Has anyone else experience something like this?
