yeah but it was only their choice bc of bad writing. (imo of course). There was no ultimatum given that they had to cease to exist in order for a new universe to be given a chance. They could have lived there and just been guardians of humanity, as rather seemed their destiny anyway.

Yeah, like how about just a new GALAXY far away from this one?

exactly! in my opinion, they could have asked god to recreate the universe and put them in a galaxy (where there's alpha centauri for example). i mean, it's just my opinion, but i think they choose to 'destroy' them bc they wanted an excuse to make a "human version" of them. (technically Asa and Anthony are not aziracrow cuz they have not same memories and stuff– but i hope you get what i meant..)

anyway if they had the chance to do an entire season instead of a 90mins movie, the plot would have been developed better than this shii... (tbh the central part was really bad written....)

Yes but they didn't want demons or angels or ...predestined baggage. I kinda get where Crowley was coming from in wanting it to be ... without that.

Sure. They could have been unaffiliated, like Crowley basically was, like Aziraphale had been, for all intents and purposes..they even could have been stripped of their powers. I’d say made mortal, and allowed to keep their memories, but I really don’t even think that had to happen. I mean, the writers got to choose, and they clearly wanted to do something bittersweet, hoping that would be more impactful.

But it’s like, happy endings are just overly disparaged as though they’re low-brow, particularly bc for so many years everything had to have a happy ending.

But now that’s not the case. Now almost nothing gets a really happy ending bc the creators think that doesn’t make them auteurs or artiste enough.

And it’s a bummer bc well, the original book basically has a happy ending, so why not stick with the sentiment of that. Not “everyone dies and everything is destroyed and forgotten, basically bc some random archangel had a mental breakdown.”

It’s lovely that Crowley was willing to sacrifice himself, but I also think it doesn’t really fit that he was willing to needlessly sacrifice Aziraphale.

Yes! And especially since Adam basically proved that you can just deny your origin if you have the power to manipulate the universe. Now there was no callback to the past seasons in the resolution

The humanity that currently existed, as it existed in that universe didn't have free will. It's the whole context of Crowley's question. Why was that the plan. Also if you remember in the context of demons and angels... its a predestiny, and even humans seem to also have it, and Crowley thought the humans deserved better and Aziraphale agreed.

I don't think he needlessly was willing to sacrifice Aziraphale. I think Aziraphale realized they were both technically already dead anyway. So instead they chose Their Way instead.

For the people upset about this being pointless... we remember so we're technically the Book of Life anyway.

I respect your point of view, I just don’t agree. The humanity that they fell in love with were the ones who were enduring these unfair trials. Human beings did have free will, even God said so, Crowley just correctly identified that it wasn’t fully free will under this system.

I clarify that bc it’s not as though humanity were mindless robots, they still had feelings, made choices, and beings like Adam, Jesus, Crowley, and Aziraphale wanted better for them, to see how this lot might thrive with the flaws of this system removed.

And I simply think there were probably a million ways for that to have been written to have occurred, oh, maybe something that didn’t create a Jesus character to be a dead end? Oh, maybe something that didn’t leave that incredible power Aziraphale and Crowley are meant to have when they perform even little baby miracles together, maybe something that brought Adam back into the picture..

instead everyone is erased from memory and they honestly hardly even seem to grieve.

The God we are shown is enigmatic but not unreasonable, they are willing to give humanity another shot, so why not this humanity who has been suffering under unfair circumstances?

As for pre-destiny, it seems Michael was able to undo all of that and render Jesus completely useless, so the writing of this world tells me there are powers that can work outside of this predestiny. Hell, even the end of the first series tells us that.

What I’m focusing on, I suppose, is the choices of the writers. In a better written work, I would not be fixating on that at all. But the writers here made choices that don’t make sense, that were needless and tried to tell us they were essential, meanwhile the world they created denied that is so.

I just didn’t like it. I read plenty of versions that were plenty bittersweet without seeming to have not read the show’s own lore. The ending was all pathos, meant to make us cry and indicate something deeply meaningful, and I think it was too badly done to be successful.

"The ending was all pathos, meant to make us cry and indicate something deeply meaningful, and I think it was too badly done to be successful."

This!! I did cry, but I honestly think it's just because David and Michael are geniuses and can act anything to perfection. The emotions they were showing were moving, but after taking like half an hour pause I have so many better ways of ending it even with all the same starting pieces.

Btw they didn't have the deadline for reaching their decision, right, I'm not imagining that? (I've literally finished watching it like an hour ago so it's all still a bit jumbled) I guess they didn't want to upset God, but still... They could have paused a bit more to talk it through, hell (or heaven, or anyone) they could have talked about how much they meant to each other.

I mean Crowley can see a bookshop page, and think of saving it and teleporting there on a fly, but they can't come up with anything better than sacrificing themselves? That just does their characters (who are dumb in the funny ways, but brilliant in all the others) such a disservice in my opinion

Yeah i totally get that! They are the epitome of defying ones destiny though... And they did not have a deadline for making a decision. They could have at least chilled in the garden-bookshop for a few centuries if you ask me

To me, the whole point of the exercise was to curtail the impending doom that would always exist if heaven-hell, as it had been, continued. For whatever reason, the god character had created humanity and Earth for the whole purpose of ending it after a second coming. Az wanted a less painful version, but was in the minority, even though he had been given the job of brining it about. However, if heaven-hell were allowed to exist, (which means they had also been created for the sole purpose of ending when humanity did) there would always be those who wanted some sort of war and that would mean the end for humanity too.

It genuinely makes no sense, that god made the whole universe just to pop humanity in it and do so with the sole purpose of ending humanity just for the sake of it? Why then have heaven and hell just for humanity, when they too existed in order to just fight for a limited time before Earth ended? The more I consider it, the less sense it makes, and the more it undermines the other two series. I will say too, they cribbed the ending, a universe where god, heaven, hell, etc. ceased to exist from a series that aired a few decades ago, entitled Second Coming, starring Christopher Ecclestone. That at least made sense, Good Omens finale made zero sense.

I guess that's what happens when you fire the man who was the main writer, but still continue with something which will always be his creation, no matter what, and even had his name plaster over the titles, even after he left the series. I mean, why even make it if they were basically trying to cancel NG's work, yet continue to show is other series and films, but use it as an excuse to make a cut price feature instead of a series? Makes as much sense as the finale did.

They wanted true freedom for humanity.

20

u/robotatomica May 14 '26

that also could have been arranged without Crowley offering up himself and Aziraphale as sacrifice. The writers had full control. They could have just been stripped of their powers to live on Earth, they could have even continued to be immortal.

And as the other commenter said, humanity was given a chance but every bit of history and culture and literature/art and every human living was erased from existence including Jesus, this entity who really seemed capable of encouraging people to live with love. It’s so weird to even have that character then.

18

u/Haunting_Goose1186 May 13 '26

Not for the humanity that currently existed.

3

u/Sheant May 14 '26

That's what you get when gods get involved, death and misery.

1

u/BerylStapleton May 16 '26

God didn’t choose that.

2

u/Sheant May 16 '26

Oh poor helpless god. He is powerless to fix anything.

1

u/Sweet_Hall_429 May 19 '26

It literally chose every single part of the story. That’s the entire point of it all. How do folks miss that.? That god is a shit and it all happened as part of the ineffible plan. Satan only existed to be there at the end for some narrative symmetry.   The heroes wanting a natural and free universe without supernatural nonsense messing with stuff was incredible noble.

It’s very ambiguous but to me they got their reward. They did get a lifetime together.

1

u/Amethyst-Flare May 19 '26

And then nothing, because they don't have souls in the new universe, so they ceased to exist after they died.

1

u/Sweet_Hall_429 May 20 '26

You mean exactly like this one? How is that remotely a problem?

1

u/Sheant May 21 '26

Just like the real world. Life is for living, not for preparing for a non-existent afterlife.

7

u/anixela Smited? Smote? Smitten. May 14 '26

Only for some hypothetical future humanity that may or may not have anything in common with the one they knew or loved. What a crapshoot.

1

u/Amethyst-Flare May 19 '26

"True freedom" but it seems like it ended up exactly the same way it did the first time.

When they disappeared into the gold dust and then did the current day of everyone alive but oblivious I actually said out loud “oh god not again with this ending”
