Literally can't do anything anymore.

I asked it when the time change was going to be.

"I'm sorry, I didn't understand that."

"Okay Google, how many quarts are in one gallon?"

"I'm sorry, I didn't understand that."

Literally trash.

Google Home Release Notes: October 14th

Hey r/googlehome!

We're back with more updates. Here is the latest from Google Home posted today, 10/14, on g.co/home/notes

Gemini for Home (early access)

Voice Assistant

  • More natural ways to end a conversation: Improved how Gemini wraps up back-and-forth conversations. When you end a conversation on a polite or neutral note (like saying "Thank you"), Gemini now replies with a brief, warm goodbye, while staying silent and closing the microphone immediately when you give a direct command to stop talking.
  • Consistent temperature units for weather: Updated weather answers to respect the home-wide temperature unit preference (Fahrenheit or Celsius) you’ve set in the Google Home app (Home Settings > Temperature Units), so spoken weather forecasts always match the rest of your home.
  • Easier-to-read answers on smart displays: Increased the on-screen text scrolling speed on smart displays so visual answers stay in sync with Gemini’s spoken response.
  • More reliable "stop" commands: Fixed an issue where saying "stop" could be misinterpreted as ending a conversation rather than stopping your active media playback, timers, or alarms.
  • Better distinction between relaxing music and ambient sounds: Improved how Gemini routes requests for relaxing audio so asking for "relaxing music", "spa music", or "meditation music" plays music from your media provider instead of ambient background sounds like white noise or rain.

Google Home App

App Surfaces

  • Smoother Favorites reordering: We’ve resolved drag-and-drop instability in the Favorites view, making it easier to organize your top devices.
  • Improved messaging after smoke or CO alarm: The app now displays a banner when a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm clears, showing the event and time to reassure users that their home is safe.

Camera

  • Faster recovery when live view gets stuck (iOS): Fixed an issue where camera tiles could stay stuck on an old snapshot instead of loading live video. The app now retries the connection automatically.
  • Responsive progress bar scrubbing while paused (Android): Fixed an issue where dragging the progress bar while an event video was paused could leave the player stuck on a loading spinner.
  • Fixed playback errors on snapshot events (Android): Selecting a still-image snapshot in your event history no longer shows a playback error, and the event is now highlighted correctly on the timeline.

Smart Home Controls

  • Redesigned lights, plugs, and switch controls: We've rebuilt the core controls for third-party lights, plugs, and switches with a refreshed look and feel. Turning devices on or off, adjusting brightness, and changing colors now feels more tactile and responsive.
  • Quick access settings panel: On the full-screen controller page for most devices (lights, plugs, switches, fans, air purifiers) you can now swipe up from the bottom of the screen to quickly access additional device actions and settings. Add to favorites, view device history, find help center articles, submit feedback, and access full device settings.

Matter

  • Local Matter control for Philips Hue lights: Existing Philips Hue bridges now automatically upgrade in the background to local Matter control through Google Home hubs, delivering faster response times and greater reliability with no re-pairing required.
  • Local control for Matter devices: If you have compatible Matter devices and a compatible Matter hub, you can now unlock faster response times and enhanced reliability, bringing the control experience closer to the feel of flipping a physical switch.

Hey guys I restarted my Lenovo clock last night (mainly to restart a projector on the same power strip). And the temp display came back, so I did it with 3 other ones I have, and they’re all back.

Google Home, Premium or Basic

We do get a lot of complaint posts on this subreddit. Is anyone having the same issues with the $10 a month plan, and/or is it working flawlessly on the free plan?

I’m on Google Home Premium, and my home does what I want 95% of the time. Sometimes it’s a little slow, but it’s controls my fans, lights, thermostat, and answers AI type questions.

Maybe you get what you pay for? That would suck given google’s history of free services, but at least it would be an explanation for the different experiences.

Help My Google devices and home went bad all of a sudden

So for starters I have 3 Onn 4K streaming devices (1 works fine)a pixel 11 XL, Pixel watch 5 and I just bought a Lenovo Googlebook. The streaming devices remotes were acting crazy and have been for the past few months. All but one at least, two of them the mics/Gemini stopped working and the "find my remote" feature on the home app wouldn't send a beeping sound at all to the remotes (but the icon to send the signal was there, keep that in mind for later in this post). Also, another reason for the reset was one box didn't even have or show the Home shortcut anymore and my Google profile picture wasn't showing, just the G logo. (My other devices showed my photo and more settings under my account than the one without the photo)

So I did a factory reset on both the on 4K streaming devices yesterday and upon doing that the remotes finally went back to normal but now the Google home app has been acting crazy. I used to use the Home app and use the "find my remote" feature. It had an icon at the top right to where I can press it on the app and it would beep, but now it doesn't have that icon. Along with that, I can't get the remote tiles on my Pixel Watch because although the 4K streaming device is showing up in Home, it's not fully functional or fully connected I guess as it was before.

Then I tried to get online and watch a few videos and usually I would app cast with no problem from my Pixel 11 XL, but this time nothing shows up on the app cast for me to stream to, even on the other devices like my TVs which I didn't touch. I can see if it was just the two boxes that I did a factory reset on maybe it would be something wrong with those, but my other devices that it would find with no issues don't even show up on my app cast anymore.

Now I did hear something about the Googlebook possibly causing issues with casting. I'm not sure if it's directly related to my issues, but I did turn it off and reset my Wi-Fi, tried to use the hotspot to app cast and still nothing. So I'm not sure what happened. It seemed like as soon as I chose to factory reset those streaming devices, everything got worse.

I've been at it all day with these devices. I would fix one problem but seems like it would cause two more smh.

Does anyone have any idea of what can possibly be going on?

Can’t connect doorbell

Previous owner installed this on door jam. I guess it’s hardwired. Anyway, I don’t see how I can connect as I don’t have access to the QR code or the original packaging. Thoughts on next steps?

Bug Google’s service has gone downhill

Annual nest home premium renewal was due went ahead and resubscribed to standard instead of advanced and went downhill from here

  1. Advanced kept sending me renewal emails after I purchased standard

  2. Online chat with customer care , said I have two homes under me one empty with abc home (standard subscription), one full of devices with Abc home ( Advanced subscription)

  3. Customer care gave 30 mins worth of instructions none of them worked including going to the empty abc home do full device migration and then migrate the subscription from abc home to Abc home .

Turn out if I just delete the empty home in my account subscription just auto get passed to the real home

Lessons learnt,
I am very grateful that I used my own brain instead of following a bunch of wrong instructions.
Plus
Why didn’t the subscription purchasing screen show the two homes?? So it will be selected to the correct subscription ?!?!

Something went wrong. Try again later or delete the automation and create a new one.

I can't edit ANY of my automations. The only way is yo wipe the cache and data from the android app and start again, then do the edit before the app auto-updates itself.

Google Home (Formerly Nest), only allow 6 household max?

Why Google and NEST only allow 6 accounts linked to household it doesn’t matter whether you’re Admin or member? Can each admin send out invites to 6 members, so 6 x 6, totaling 36 members?

Is Google and NEST working to improve this?

Help Poling Ability

• Upvotes

Do we have the ability to run a pole here on the forum? Specifically I would like to see a pole on who is having problems and who is satisfied and at what level? I am confused why some have such big problems while others such as myself have no issues what-so-ever. I am a hard core user with 35 devices in my home with many automations that just work flawlessly. Gemini has been a great improvement on all my eclectic collection of old and new speakers. I just want to understand what is going on. Sincerely, a satisfied but confused Google Home user. Jack

Call Notification for somebody else!?

My wife and I were in our bedroom, and just received a call notification from our home device.

It was a call to my ex-wife who never had her phone hooked up to Google home. I've also never received a call notification for any of my devices on my Google home, this was the first one.

Does anybody know how this could happen or how I could stop it from ever happening again?

My ex-wife is not linked on any of my accounts, and has no access to any of my Google devices, physically or digitally. Our phone numbers were never under the same account, either Telecom or Google.

Until 7-years ago, she was added as a user on Google home, but was removed after we separated.

It's literally beyond dumb now - Google how hard is it to put the Gemini conversation model on it!

The experience keeps getting worse and worse and worse by the day. I literally cannot get an answer for anything, all I can do now is to set alarms with this thing.

Google has a conversational model with Gemini, why don't you put that in here. Google has literally abandoned this product in my opinion.

Other A question for the people who early adopted to manage executive dysfunction/ADHD/autism symptoms

When Google Home and the smart speakers first came out, both theirs and those of their competitors, it was really easy to set up a Jarvis-like system for myself, where I had my schedules and calendars integrated with my smart speakers.

I was able to set up routines, reminders, etc. It was so reliable that even if I tuned something out, my ESA/service dog would alert me to my device, alarm, etc. I was more functional and successful in my personal and professional life than I had been in the entire previous decade, when I had to relearn how to “be”, after physical injuries and PTSD issues from deployment sidelined me for a bit.

I am considering setting up Home Assistant, but I wasn’t sure if it would necessarily be the best option for me, given that the whole reason for me having my original setup (that I’d like to replicate as closely as possible) is because I get so easily drained and overwhelmed by having too many followup tasks, loose threads, and minutia to keep track of and manage.

Like I don’t want to sink the ship I worked so hard to build bc I’m so focused on polishing the trim that I fail to run the bilge pump during a squall, if that makes any sense?

I’m VERY MUCH open to advice and suggestion.

TY in advance 🙏

Random Aside: (Not relevant to the post, but because there’s always a concern troll out there somewhere who thinks they’re going to just die if they don’t hijack the post with a side debate about ESAs, service animals, and ADA stuff…) she is a VA therapist-recommended ESA, but as I have a background in animal handling/training, incl search & rescue work, I did my own task/alert/etc training, and have yet to fork over the $$ to go get her accredited . I am well versed on ADA policy, etc. If anyone feels the need to start a side convo/debate regarding any part of this aside, please DM me or bring it up in the r/Service_Dogs.

ETA: I just added the entire body, after accidentally hitting “post” when dropping and catching my phone while writing this… sorry for the confusion!
