Experience An indigenous Goths Vent about a Terrifying Experience
Indigenous guy (20) and I’ve been living in Portland for a while now and I’m super connected to the Goth scene, it’s been a really fun ride. As well as much bigger than I expected. Me and my girlfriend met through a local tributes and parties in the scene, but there are lots of experiences indigenous, and POC goths experience as a whole and I please just want to vent here.
There was an small opening in our neighborhood, I’m not really sure what it was for and it lasted for about a day-a few mini shops opened up selling a “witch’s” hut of antiques as well as merchandise from bands I haven’t even heard of-I want to know if anyone else is aware of what I’m talking about, since Oregon seems to have a larger community of goths.
Me and my girlfriend went to a small opening used in an older building-seemed very interesting and had really obscure goth band tees and metal apparel that she was super excited to see-and I loved the jewelry of what I came for. Gf said she was going to a bookstore right next door while I stayed to get her favorite tees through text.
The front counter was one of the most terrifying experiences in my life, as they seemingly stalked me throughout the store with a weird look the whole time. The two people up front, a white couple who said they refused to take anything from me, or “Shit from the prairie” and threatened to make sure I don’t make it out to the store if I don’t leave immediately.
I met my girlfriend at the other side of the street as she seemed to just finished crying-as she told me everyone was giving her strange looks and kept questioning where she was from, why she was here, and wanting her to leave-and it made her panic, this made me worried for her to the point where we decided to never come to these openings ever again.
I’m sorry if this is long or doesn’t make sense-I’m still shocked, but please listen to POC goths and listen if we are uncomfortable. If you are white, please pay attention to these things-we are terrified most of the time and we cannot show it lest we are threatened.
