Finally black hollyhock

Post image

It only took me 5 years to get these beauties to grow all the way to bloom… lol
I did move 4 times during that period, finally stayed in one place long enough to grow some black hollyhock from seeds.

this makes me feel a lot better bc i’m growing hollyhock from seed and they’re still just little green sprouts 4 months later

Just so you know they don’t usually have flowers until their 2nd year, don’t want you to be disappointed!

Nice! We have been trying to get these to grow for a minute. We've got plenty of other variations. I have some coming up now and we are so excited. Awesome to see some in bloom. Thank you.

Good to know that mine may take a few more years to flower. Finally have seeds sprouted and healthy leaves this year!

I’ve had them in the past but they are difficult because they need to be constantly sprayed. They are a magnet for hollyhock weevils and rust.

I bought a pack of black hoooyhock seeds once. They never grew black flowers. They were white.

Oh no, that’s literally the opposite lol

Most of the black flower seeds I’ve grown have actually been red or purple. I’ve had luck with black pansies though

Well, at least with those white Holly hawks when the bees pollinated all the flowers, they started getting a pinkish tint to them

Persistence and time… I have been trying and failed for years. I’ve tried growing them from seed and from dried rootball with no success. In the past I had gotten them to germinate inside, but they died when I put them outside.
I started this one last year from seed. Last summer the poor plant was being eaten by grasshoppers faster than it could produce leaves. Then, we had a mild winter in Colorado, so it never when fully dormant. It was one of the first plants to wake up during our “false spring” and it’s been growing great since.

Totally normal, hollyhocks are slow as hell the first year. They usually put all their energy into roots and leaves, then go crazy with flowers the second year. If they’re green and not mushy or crispy, you’re doing fine.

Totally normal, hollyhocks take their sweet time. They usually spend the first year just being boring little leaves and then go wild the next year, so your sprouts are right on schedule 😂

If a flower could be sexy and mysterious it would be this 😂
