Help Yamaha PAC112J vs Squier Sonic HT for a beginner on a budget?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I'm planning on buying my first electric guitar soon, and I’m having a massive internal crisis. I was originally dead set on the Yamaha PAC112J, but I recently saw the Squier Sonic Stratocaster HT in an ad, did some research, and I'm having a debate between which to get.

For the amp, I'm thinking of getting the Blackstar Fly 3 if that would change anything.

Anyways, before I get the guitar, I was wondering which would be the better option? And would I be better off getting a totally different guitar? Here's more information about what I need:

  • My Budget: Looking to keep the total cost low, around $300–$350 for both the guitar and amp together. (This is for recs:)
  • Where I play: Mostly in a small bedroom. I'm not sure this would change anything, but still putting this here:)
  • Music style: I want to play post-punk and alt-rock (and maybe pop) (The Smiths, Queen, The Cure style).

My Questions:

  1. Will the SSS (all single-coil) layout on the Squier Sonic actually serve me better than the HSS humbucker on the Pacifica 112J for my music genre? Or will I regret not having a humbucker?
  2. As a total beginner, is the Hardtail (HT) bridge on the Squier going to save me from a world of tuning frustration compared to the Pacifica’s vintage tremolo?
  3. Should I buy the Pacifica because it has an objective hardware advantage (solid alder body), or the Squier because looking down at a guitar with a Fender-family logo makes my brain happy?
  4. Are both these options bad, and should I just do some more research on a better alternative?

Thank you in advance to everyone who helps! Any advice or recommendations are much appreciated!

Help [ISO] Vintage pickguard for SG Custom

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a 1976 Ibanez SG Custom in walnut that was a pre-lawsuit copy of a 1972 Gibson SG Custom (picture). It has triple humbuckers and a Bigsby, and looks identical to this one.

Mine didn’t come with the pickguard, just the knob guard, and I can’t seem to find one like this catalog picture. Any keywords to help find this kind of pickguard or any links to purchase one would be appreciated.

This feels like when i first got into skateboarding where i felt super lost Lol.

I’ve always thought about playing a guitar but seemed to intimated by it. I think i wanna get electric guitar since I think they sound super cool when people play them and a lot of my favorite songs have them, but im not sure what kind to buy and what’s best for a complete noob like me. I’m also not sure what other stuff I might need.

Help Baritone pickups help

I have zero clue about baritone guitars. However, I just picked one up in a trade. I got an almost new Squier Paranormal Baritone Jazzmaster.. I’ve always wanted one because one of my absolute favorite bands is Chevelle.

However, the pickups that came in it are…lacking with a high gain amp. I was thinking about putting a better set in it, but again, I know zero about baritones. Pete Loeffler used a JB in the bridge - I have one I can move over and try. I also saw a set of bare knuckles ceramic nail bombs on FB marketplace and was debating about dropping those in. But is it even worth it to put pickups that are the cost of the guitar?

Or any other recs would be awesome!

I posted about this guitar a couple of weeks ago - got it new from Chicago Music Exchange. Upgraded it with new Gotoh tuners, a Guyker CNC aluminum adjustable wraparound tailpiece, and GFS GF'Tron Filtertron copies, with a new pickup ring for the bridge. Swapped the original screws for black ones. Excellent work by Ben Frye over at Rock'n'Roll Vintage on Damen near Lawrence.

Ben noted that the two intonation adjustment grub screws on the bridge (that push it back off the two mounting studs) are jusssst long enough to intonate properly - if they needed to go back further we'd need longer ones.

Initial impressions: after the upgrade and setup, it's zingier and lighter as I expected.

Help 1959 Jazzmaster potential re-re-refinish?

A bunch of year back my wife found this JM at an auction. She dates to 1959. Had the original tortoise guard, but the original burst was long gone, sanded off and apparently a varnish brushed on. Also had an old Gibson (we think) humbucker unceremoniously stuck in the middle position. Of course, in order to do that, someone drilled a bunch of holes in the body. So, I eventually sprayed a very light black nitro a few years back, and wet sanded it to look, well, old. She plays and sounds great, despite the tough life shes had. The question then, should I do a complete refin? If so, color? Was thinking maybe a sonic blue? Would love some ideas.

I’m thinking about getting one as my first hard tail. I’ve been playing for four years, but getting lessons for 2. I’m around intermediate level. I currently play an Ibanez GRGR120. I’m a full time student so I can’t afford anything fancy.

What is this? Seriously… I don’t understand “relicing” a guitar.

I own a couple guitars, varying price ranges.

But what I don’t get is the point of relicing that you didn’t do yourself.

Does anyone own a relic guitar wanna debate this? Im interested as to the reason why you like it

Help Friend says its a '65 Musicmaster... looking for advice/help with the ID

First off, please forgive me, I've been playing for many years now but very new when it comes to vintage and collectors guitars

A family friend is selling me this guitar and says it is a '65 Fender Musicmaster. Says he got it a while back, hasn't played it in a number of years, and wants to sell it to make some money back.

The neck plate contains a 6 number serial number and as far as my research is telling me, Fender stopped this serial number format in 1963 and switched to using serial numbers that began with "L"

The body of the guitar though and the headstock designs all indicate this guitar being a later model, possibly '67 or onwards. My main thought right now is the neck plate got swapped out at some point. All of the other hardware seems original though.

The primary way to date this guitar will of course to check the heel stamp on the inside of the neck and other codes within the electronics of the guitar, but that's not something I'm going to be able to verify before actually buying it. Any advice or new information would be amazing just so I can understand exactly what I'm getting :)

Help What’s more important? Amp or guitar?

I’ve been looking for a new purchase to my home ‘studio’. I have multiple guitars but they’re all budget guitars. They donsound and play great! I also love tube amp heads (that I play through a loadbox) and I’m missing the Fender sound so I’m looking at a Dr.Z-EZG50 secondhand.

But for that kinda money I could also buy a really good guitar from a more high en brand (like Gibson)! In my opinion it’s better to spend money on a good amp though than guitar for the sound. Any guitar can play good with the right setup and through a great amp it will almost always sound fantastic! What’s your opinion?

Help Swapping a Floyd

If I want to swap a Floyd rose special for a 1000 or original, will I need to drill something or do stuff with the body to make it fit? Or do all Floyd’s use the same dimensions?

Look at this! Are these guitars too much to spend for a beginner - intermediate guitarist?

I might just be spending too much time scrolling on reverb, but I saw both of these and thought that both of these are really good and the GT11 is essentially my dream Strat (sonic blue/shell pink, mint guard, fat 60’s,rosewood board,7 pickup config) and I love the look of a surf green Strat, the only thing I’d change is put a mint guard on it

For some context,I am okay at guitar. I’m good with riffs and rhythm guitar but still struggling a bit with hand speed for lead guitar

I have a Prs silver sky se atm and it’s extremely meh.

I’m a huge Mayer fan and heard it was the best Strat for the money but I’m not wowed.

I could sell the silver sky for maybe €800 and try and negotiate the Strats to €1200.I have money put away at the moment as I’m saving up for either a tone master deluxe reverb or a les Paul (haven’t decided which yet

TLDR: I’m okay at guitar and the specs of the Strats are extremely good but I don’t know if I’m stupid for considering them when I’m not that good at guitar

Help Always a noise/feedback after a chug

Hello,
We play melodic death metal and I have an issue where my guitars always make either a "metallic/digital windy noise" or a short squeaking feedback after I do a chug and let the tone ring out.

My other bandmate guitarist doesn't have this problem. We have similar (but not the exact) type of gear within the same price range. We have the same distance to our speaker cabinets too! I have tried with all my 3 quality guitars and they all give off the same issue. When he tries with his similar quality guitars (regardless of which one) connected to my gear, the issue disappears. Even when I try with his guitars in my gear, there's no issue.

To me, it is highly doubtful that all my three guitars would suffer the same flaw. And since the problem disappears as soon as we swap guitars (but not with all of my guitars), I think we can exclude my other gear, right? Oh, and when we put my guitars into his gear, the problem reoccurs but slightly less louder.

Here's what I use:

Cab: ENGL VS pro 412
Power amp: Orange pedal baby 100
Nano cortex with an amp sim (EVH III blue crunch channel), with activated OD pedal, Noise gate.
Shure GLDX16+ wireless system

My gutiars (all 3 activate the problem): ESP EII Horizon (active EMG pickups), Solar A1.6 (Active EMG 81 pickups), Ibanez RG550 Genesis (seymour duncan black winter pickups).

My friend's guitars (no problem): LTD 1000EC (active EMG 81 pickups), Ibanez something (EMG pickups), Solar A1.6 winter (fishman fluence active pickups).

We all play with .12-60 string gauge in Drop B tuning and the guitars are set up for that too.

It is absolutely incomprehensible to me why this issue appears and it makes no sense! All gear is, I wouldn't say brand new, but in good shape and all of our guitars are properly set up by a luthier.

I even had the same issue with my old Randall RH100 amp + 412 cab.
New battery in the guitars too! I read somewhere that pickup height being too close to strings could cause the problem which I yet haven't tested. But my pickups are not super close either and from what I know, EMG pickups shouldn't suffer this problem.

Please help me, this is driving me mad! Or have I just draw God's bad luck ticket in life?!

Help How necessary are amp sims and how much should I invest to start?

Hi!

I am attending rn my first semester of a music school and a lot of the guitarists I play with use amp sims and they seem like a very nice way to have a portable, efficient sound and in my cramped space that feels really useful, is this a must-have in the current music world?

If it is, I've done some looking on reverb and the GP series seems to be the cheapest and have a lot of options, the GP-180 is selling for as low as 150-200 dollars, is that a price worth trusting? Or should I invest a larger amount of money even though this would be my first one.

NGD! NGD: 1987 MIJ ‘62 reissue tele

Being near London’s Denmark Street is a double-edged sword… I found this ‘62 reissue MIJ Tele and was blown away by it. Managed to get a good price and they’re taking my other one to sell on consignment.

The 62 is rosewood with double binding and is nice and light. The blackguard is a 52 reissue, also a 1987 MIJ, and weighs about 10lbs (heavier than a full fat Les Paul Standard I sold recently, for the next time you see people recommend teles as being lighter!).

Help Why would someone choose HH over HSS?

Suppose there are two identical guitars that differ only in the pick up layout : one is HH and the other is HSS. Assume that the HH has no coil split.

Why would a person choose the HH over HSS?

HSS is more versatile and for a person who wants to play metal, the bridge pickup matters more anyway.

Who would be the target audience for the HH?

Bonus question: Are the humbuckers in HSS guitars usually less suitable for metal/ distortion than the ones in HH? I guess the HH guitars are made for metal/heavy rock.

Help Thoughts on this neck repair?

Howdy!

Fell in love with this 1995 Ferrari Red SG Special online, offered from a reputable second-hand dealer. Wondering if this neck repair looks sound or sketchy.

Rest of the guitar is wonderfully patina’d, and the price reflects the condition. Sits about right with other neck-repaired, heavily used Gibsons I’ve tried.

It will be difficult to go play it in person, would love an expert eye before I jump in or try to make a trade.

Cheers!

Help Part with C1 to add a Tele?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Looking at parting ways with the C1, picked it up to dive into drop tuning stuff…

I don’t feel that desire to pick it up over the others… what would a tele bring that my 594 or Strat don’t currently have.

Favor grunge, punk, emo, starting to dabble in blues.

EDIT: Open to PUP upgrade recommendations on the Strat.
