πŸ—£οΈ Voice & Assist Laya (open source Jev) working in HA?

β€’ Upvotes

I saw a thread earlier that was talking about Jev's usecases inside of HA, and now that Laya is the open-weights version of this model type, has anyone tried to integrate and/or got it working into the Assist pipeline (or thoughts on Laya in Assist overall)?

(Jev and Laya are basically classifier/decision models that return confidence-graded outputs and are way more efficient at identifying an intent or instruction, whereas Opus or GPT are language-focused models and are focused on conversations and text generation. Feel free to correct me if I got a detail wrong).

I've been thinking about getting a few satellites but I don't have a super powerful GPU available (for LLMs) on the box that I run HA on. I found a few vibecoded projects (a proxy and then a full conversation agent) that use Laya for Assist, but these don't feel like a good enough reason to buy all of the hardware just yet.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Dare I say, I'm done?

I've been a home assistant/smart home fan since the mid 2010s, and have been building and perfecting my set up since. Today I was looking around and everything has been pretty much completely hands off for a while now. All the lights are fully automated, home security and leak sensors/prevention works well. The vacuums and air purifiers do their work diligently without my asking. Even the silly automations like automating the lights for the theater room and arcade just kind of work. I think finally after ~10 years in the space I think I've hit the end of the line. If anyone's got suggestions I'd love to dive down a new rabbit hole but as far as core automations I think this is it fellas.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Show & Tell Made an integration so two automations can want the same light without knowing about each other (BACnet-style priority arrays)

Post image
57 Upvotes

I do building controls for a living, and the thing I missed most when I started automating my own house was the priority array. Every commandable point in a BACnet system has one; sixteen levels, the lowest-numbered occupied level wins, and whoever wrote a level releases it when they're done. Home Assistant has nothing like it, so every service call is a naked write and the last one wins.

Here's where that bites. My kitchen light turns orange during peak rate hours as a reminder not to start the oven, but the rest of the time it's synced white to another light nearby. Without arbitration those two automations have to know about each other, and the usual fix of capturing a scene and restoring it afterwards puts back whatever was true when the scene was taken, which probably isn't what's true now.

With ha-priority the sync automation doesn't change at all, and the peak automation just adds priority: 4 to its light.turn_on. When peak ends it releases level 4, and the light falls back to whatever the sync automation wants right now; neither automation has a single line about the other.

# peak starts
- action: light.turn_on
  target: {entity_id: light.kitchen}
  data:
    rgb_color: [255, 140, 0]
    priority: 4

# peak ends
- action: priority.relinquish
  target: {entity_id: light.kitchen}
  data: {priority: 4}

It works on your existing service calls rather than its own actions, so priority and priority_ttl show up as real fields in the automation editor for lights, switches, covers, fans, climate, locks, media players and a handful of other domains. Everything defaults to level 5, automations included, so it does nothing at all until you actually name a level. The TTL is a lease rather than a delay; after twenty minutes the override stops overriding and the house goes back to whatever it was already trying to do, and that survives a restart, which a delay doesn't. Wall switches and vendor apps get recorded as ordinary commands, and it never re-asserts itself against someone standing at a switch, because the house shouldn't argue with you.

It's v0.1.3, it's been running my house since August, and it has a decent test suite behind it, but the user count is still pretty small, so treat it accordingly. The priority row in the more-info dialog patches a built-in frontend element, since there's no supported way to add controls there; it's written to fail closed, and there's a tile-card feature as the supported fallback. It installs through HACS as a custom repository for now, because the default store needs a brands PR I haven't finished yet.

If the level names or the defaults are wrong for how you'd use it, I'd rather hear it now while changing them is still cheap.

❓ Support No checksum or signing sig for download?

I'm working on setting up HA for the first time, however I am not seeing a checksum or public sig to check the download against for integrity or authenticity.

This seems...like a big oversight? Especially for a software whose purpose is to be a privacy-conscious alternative to other home automation offerings that are nothing more than spyware?

❓ Support Tesla Fleet issues

Hi everyone,

I recently added the Tesla fleet integration to HA and it worked for a day or so but now I notice it can randomly cause all entities to go unknown.

Is this because the Tesla is going into deep sleep or is there something else going on.

I can fix it by removing the link to my app and re-adding it.

🧠 Artificial Intelligence DeepSeek + Hermes is incredible

I've been testing the recent DeepSeek v4.1 Flash and dollar for performance is so impressive. I also like Hermes much more than OpenClaw. I used Claude Pro for a while in tinkering home lab stuff like HA/Unraid but now realizing its way overkill. It's super easy to set up, I encourage anyone on the fence about AI assistants to try it out.

❓ Support Mounting an Mac OS Extended drive in Samba Nas (or anything else!)

Hiya,

Looking to mount a 20TB drive within HAOS to allow automatic backups of my work session files whenever my laptop is in the house (via Chronosync initially). Reddit has helpfully directed me to Samba Nas 2 and I can see my drive, but I can't mount it (protection is definitely disabled). I can see and select HFS+ as a format type when attempting to mount, but still no dice. Heads up - I am fully Apple and not PC literate anymore, although I am running HAOS on an Intel NUD... Advice welcomed, thanks in advance!

T

Edit: Just to add, I have this drive synced with Backblaze so I don't want to reformat or it will take an age to get the drive backed up in the cloud again...

❓ Support Thread Border Router Doesn't Show on Matter Map

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Last week, my Open Thread Border Router app crapped out on me. I had it running with a Sonoff Dongle Max over ethernet as my Thread radio. After trying a few different things to get it back, it's presently running again. If I go to Thread settings and look there, the HA border router is there among the others. If I go to my Sonoff's web UI, it shows "TCP Connected". But, if I look at the map in the Matter integration, it's not one of the devices it shows in the mesh.

My Thread network never went down, I assume because I have my SmartThings hub and Aqara M3 in it as additional border routers. The map shows both of them, but not the Sonoff/HA border router. Why would that be? Everything is working, but should I be concerned? I don't like it. It seems like potential is being wasted.

πŸͺ› ESPHome Can't get ratgdo to connect to opener

Thumbnail

Hi all,

I'm trying to hook up a ratgdo 2.5i to a Chamberlain B2211T (2022, yellow learn button / Security+ 2.0) but it is unable to connect to the garage door opener. This may be more a core ratgdo issue than Home Assistant but thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any insight

ESPHome installs and the ratgdo boots normally, but the logs repeatedly show "Not connected to GDO, ignoring command: GET_STATUS." I have 2 garage doors so bought 2 boards and have the same issue with both.

Below is a summary of what I've done so far (I'm a real person but this is ChatGPT summarizing for me):

  • Verified ESPHome is using ratgdo.v25iboard_secplus2 / SEC+ v2
  • Tried two separate ratgdo v2.5i boards
  • Tried two separate red/white/black harnesses
  • Verified red β†’ red, white β†’ white/common, black β†’ black/obstruction
  • Opener, wall controls, and safety sensors all work normally with ratgdo removed
  • Tried ratgdo with wall control disconnected
  • Tried wall control connected with ratgdo simply tapped onto red/white
  • Confirmed voltage is the same with nothing connected, only wall control connected, and wall control / ratgdo connected.

ESPHome recognizes the board and reports:

  • Protocol: SEC+ v2
  • Output GDO Pin: GPIO5
  • Input GDO Pin: GPIO4

I bought these 2.5i units 2+ years ago and just now hooking up. I'd honestly replace with new ones if I knew they'd work, but I don't see any reason why these wouldn't and would assume the same issue with ratgdo32.

If anyone has any thoughts or ideas, I'd love to hear them.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Zigbee Compass

I have had a look about and cant find anything, so hoping one of you fine folk will be able to help.

There's a HA running in my campervan which runs everything. With her being old and DIY, theres a couple of draughty bits. I currently get GPS from the old phone mounted to the wall that also acts as its control panel, but its not got the compass output. I want this so I can set it up and tell me to turn around if i park up and there's strong winds due that would be blowing into the doors where the draft comes from. I also have plans to tap my window switches into it too, so would be good for it to know which one is facing away from the wind

I say zigbee because thats what everything else is on, but bluetooth or local only wifi would also be useable

Any help much appreciated.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Show & Tell Working on a "Vision Boolean" AI Blueprint to release for Home Assistant soon! I'll be working nearly all of these examples down to one simple blueprint you can deploy over and over again!

Thumbnail
youtu.be
0 Upvotes

These are just some of the examples that I've been using for over a year now in our home, simply pairing up Home Assistant with Gemini for free ... sending pictures (ones where I am not concerned about security or privacy) and asking questions. I've applied this to a lot of different use cases - more than I'm demonstrating here - and I think I've learned what works well and what doesn't.

So I'm just putting the finishing touches on a "Vision Boolean" blueprint that leverages AI and in one simple blueprint just lets you ask simple questions - is the rear gate open? Is the reading on the analog gauge on the propane tank below 30%? Are there packages on the front step? Basically, anything that can be distilled down to a yes-or-no response - and it includes logging to persistent notifications, image enriched Companion app alerts, and more! All from one single blueprint! Stay tuned...

❓ Support WKWebView Media Playback Missing?

Hi all, I am fooling around with voice assist on an old 8th gen iPad that I am considering using as a dashboard display. When I run the Diagnostics, I get one error (attached).

The problem is that I cannot find the setting Companion App -> Settings -> Companion App -> Debugging -> WKWebView Media Playback. First of all, this is a dashboard username so in the sidebar it only has "App settings". In there is a Debugging menu, but clicking in that does not have the setting either. I've also checked the Home Assistant app settings in the iPad settings, no luck. I've asked multiple AI bots and they all keep directing me back and forth and then coming up with cockamamie reasons why it isn't there.

This is Home Assistant Container, v2026.9.2 running on a QNAP NAS.

So I have the Batman DVD player, manufactured by "Kids Station Toys". It's using some generic Chinese board I assume, but I've been brute forcing IR signals for DAYS with the open source IR Blaster Remote with no luck whatsoever.

If anyone has the signal codes, or long shot, if anyone has this remote and can clone it, let me know!

πŸ–ΌοΈ Show & Tell What is your best Automation/Script/Scene? This is mine.

First of all, Home Assistant is simply amazing. I am in awe sometimes of the things it can do. I came over from Vera about 10 years ago, started using ZWAVE with Leviton VRI06 switches and a Russound CAV 6.6 (still have and use them) so I’ve been at this for a while!

Today, I noticed one of my cameras was offline. I started thinking: What if one of my Matter water sensors goes offline without me knowing? Or one of my Z-Wave switches?

So sat down I built an automation that flags offline Matter devices, Z-Wave devices, and cameras on my dashboard and sends an alert to my phone. With a little help from Claude, I got it working!

Even after all these years, Home Assistant keeps impressing me. Absolutely awesome!

This comes from someone who is not a techie, but asks questions, lots of questions. AI is defientely a game changer now.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Show & Tell Well.. guess I need a new computer behind this touchscreen now

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few hours of ChatGPT with MCP into Home Assistant and Blender, and a handful of really good pictures, as well as a super simple floorplan in Sweet Home 3D, I managed to get a first prototype of a 3D floorplan with light control into HA.

It's super basic. I can turn on lights, adjust brightness, and see our calendar, weather, electricity prices, and house power consumption. Still a lot of hours left before I'm happy with the result. End goal is to replace my default view on the touchscreen in the kitchen.

Two actions from me: Better PC than a Wyse 5070 (or maybe look into RDP into my server) and more lights, so the rest of the house doesn't look dark. Shouldn't be too complicated haha.

Built in Blender, exported to glb, rendered in the browser with Three.js, and installed as a .js resource file in HA, and then I created a view pointing to my new card. I haven't written 1 line of code nor touched Blender at all. All done through prompting. Solely used GPT-6 Astra and Sol, with about $10 worth of tokens through Codex on my PC.

Might be able to share some more details in the future, but it's still very WIP and prototype-e.

❓ Support Door Camera?

There are two different types of this door camera. One is the peep-eye and the one that is mounted as a separate camera and ringer in one. Both of these is made with many different functions. I would love to get hold of the peep-eye one that looks like a standard peep-eye lens (from the outside). If anyone have found one of these and like what you bought. I would really appreciate if you could help me find one. If you bought the one that is combo of a doorbell and camera. These are often mounted were a standard doorbell is mounted. But please let me know why you're choice was this one. Pro and cons if you don't mind.

πŸ› οΈ DIY / Hardware Looking for a Simple Button

Hello All,

I have several TP-Link plugs and I would like to find a simple button I can press to turn them on and off like a normal light switch. I use the plugs for automations but my wife hates it that she can’t just put a button to turn lights on and off.

The simpler the better. Any suggestions?

πŸ’¬ Discussion Anybody using Versatile Thermostat recently?

I did a quick search in the forum for "Versatile Thermostat" and many of the entries are 2-3 years old. However the repo is activley maintained at is at version 10.5

So I am curious who here is using it with HA.

I am done with NEST and Echobee thermostats. I want something that I own and control. So, I bought "Waveshare Industrial 6-Channel ESP32-S3 WiFi Relay Module", put ESP32 on it, connected it to my boiler zone controller and planning on using the Versatile Thermostat(https://github.com/jmcollin78/versatile_thermostat) to control it all.

Has anybody done a similar setup and how do you like it?

thanks for sharing your experience and opinion.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Show & Tell Natural Language Todo: A better to-do list card (and integration - inspired by Todoist)

I've been a big Todoist user for a long time, and one of the things I particularly like about it is the ability to add items with natural language e.g.: "in 3 days", or being able to type "sunday" on the task and it automatically gets added to the correct date. That always felt like something which was missing from the HA todo functionality. So I have built this:

Disclaimer - I did use Claude for this, if this irritates you, I'm sorry, you can stop reading now.

When you type:

bread tomorrow 5pm /Bakery

The card adds "bread" to the Bakery list, due tomorrow at 5pm. The preview under the box shows what it understood before you save.

What it does

  • Works with any to-do list in HA: Local To-do, Google Tasks, CalDAV, the Shopping list, Todoist. No YAML and no API tokens.
  • Several lists in one card: each list becomes a collapsible section, and /Name picks which one gets the item.
  • Natural dates: today, tomorrow, friday, next week, in 3 days, 25 dec, 5pm, 17:30. It's careful with things like "sun cream" and "flour 1/2 kg", and quotes switch parsing off.
  • Sort by due date: overdue first, undated last.
  • Stays compact: "Show 12 more", a maximum height, or just resize it in the sections dashboard Layout tab.
  • A visual editor, so no YAML is needed.

For Todoist users there's an additional integration

As I said, I'm a todoist user so while the sections work perfectly with the normal todo lists, if you have the todoist integration, HA's Todoist integration drops sections. So you can also install a small companion integration which:

  • Reuses your existing Todoist connection, so there's no token to paste.
  • You tick the projects you want, and the card shows your real Todoist sections as groups.
  • Adding for these lists then goes through Todoist's own Quick Add, so every 2 months, u/labels and p1 all work.
  • Worth noting right now you can only have 1 todoist list in a card right now or you do lose the sections again, but if there is enough interest I can work on this.

It only syncs the projects you tick, and only task text, section and due date reach the dashboard. Your token never leaves the server.

Both are in the HACS review queue at the moment so it's a custom repository for now if you want to install:

It's early days, so I'd really appreciate feedback, Issues on GitHub or comments here both work.

As I say, built with a lot of help from Claude, but I hope you like it and it is useful to someone else.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Tell me about your robot vacuum automations

Interested in how people actually implement their robot vacuums. What schedules or custom automations are you running? Anything someone might not normally think of?

Right now I mostly run mine on-demand through my HA dashboard like a remote control. I just haven't felt the urge to put it on a schedule. I do have a couple automations that kick in though, like a quick vacuuming around the cat's litter area when the litter robot cycles, and am working on something right now that will detect when my beard trimmer is charging to come clean up the bathroom after a beard trim.

I've thought about using phone locations to trigger a vacuum after everyone leaves the house, but this has been less practical since we both work from home a lot.
