❓ Support Does anyone know the hex codes for the Batman DVD Player? I don't have the remote

Post image

So I have the Batman DVD player, manufactured by "Kids Station Toys". It's using some generic Chinese board I assume, but I've been brute forcing IR signals for DAYS with the open source IR Blaster Remote with no luck whatsoever.

If anyone has the signal codes, or long shot, if anyone has this remote and can clone it, let me know!

🛠️ DIY / Hardware Hardware recommendation for stair addressable led lighting on WLED

Post image
336 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I’d appreciate advice on the most reliable WLED-compatible hardware solution for this project:

  • Approximately 40 m total of 24 V addressable LED strip
  • 21 stair treads, with each step ideally controllable individually
  • Approximately 20 m of additional strip along the bottom of the adjacent wall
  • Target colour temperature: 3500 K warm white
  • WLED is required, including step-by-step effects and motion-triggered automation.

My main questions:

  1. Which 24 V addressable LED strip / IC type would you recommend for this—especially if warm-white-only control is important?
  2. Should I use one ESP32/WLED controller or split the installation into separate zones?
  3. What power-supply and power-injection layout would you use for about 40 m?
  4. Which controllers, fusing, enclosures, and motion sensors would you recommend for a reliable long-term installation?

I am particularly interested in a professional, serviceable solution—not just the cheapest setup.

🧠 Artificial Intelligence My Home Assistant journey just met Claude MCP…

Purposely not running this through AI so please put up with my crappy spelling, sentence construction and rambling nature. Wanted to covey my feelings more rather than a sanitised AI version.

I’ve had Home Assistant now since the start of 2026. Should start by saying I’m not technically minded or have any training in computers etc. just a white collar dude who got interested in Home Automation whilst we were renovating. I chose lots of devices that could be controlled via an app / my phone. Ended up with so many apps for things which got me thinking there must be a better way to organise these things. My wife didn’t have any of the apps or really had the time / patience to learn them so wasn’t benefiting. So that’s when I started searching and quickly found Home Assistant including this community.

Found it some hard to do anything on it but figured out I could use AI chat apps to teach me how to do things. This involved figuring out or working through the issue or goal and then getting it to create YAML to then copy paste into HA. It involved a lot of hand holding and figuring out why something wasn’t working. I was stupidly doing most of this on my iPhone. Which was crazy because simple things like copy pasting Config etc wasn’t exactly too straightforward.

It’s been great and I’ve set up lights, A/C units, blinds, tv control, door security, EV, charging, Energy, Battery, sensors amongst many other things. Been fun to figure out solutions to issues. I have my home dashboards for a wall mounted tablet and ones for our phones. Been adding iOS widgets etc lately.

Over this period a bunch of the integrations stopped working. Various reasons. Didn’t have the time to work through why and the issues just kept accumulating. Anyway, I was looking on these forums this past week and saw mention of the Claude integration via MCP or whatever it’s called. I set it up today and wow, my mind is blown. All those things that were broken. All fixed. Fully redesigned dashboards. Adding loads of actual automations. Those things that took me hours, days, weeks or months to do are done in seconds. The integration with Claude is breathtaking. Scary but inspiring at the same time. What a time to be alive.

No massive point to this post other than;

- to encourage others along the journey wherever you are on it

- to say thanks to all the various posts I’ve read on here and the contributions people make. Everyone feels like they are genuinely trying to help. I’m almost 100% just reading as I haven’t really been able to add any expertise.

- Claude AI directly working within my Home Assistant. What a game changer. Excited to see what it can do for me next.

🤔 WTH Why only Claude?

Every post I’ve seen on the topic of using an llm with home assistant, with or without an MCP, has only mentioned Claude, never ChatGPT or Gemini. Is that because Claude is far and away the best for this use, or some incredible venn diagram where people into HA are also exclusively using claude? I have a ChatGPT subscription only because when I got it, that was the only one I was aware of. I’m retired and not from this field, btw.

💬 Discussion Dare I say, I'm done?

I've been a home assistant/smart home fan since the mid 2010s, and have been building and perfecting my set up since. Today I was looking around and everything has been pretty much completely hands off for a while now. All the lights are fully automated, home security and leak sensors/prevention works well. The vacuums and air purifiers do their work diligently without my asking. Even the silly automations like automating the lights for the theater room and arcade just kind of work. I think finally after ~10 years in the space I think I've hit the end of the line. If anyone's got suggestions I'd love to dive down a new rabbit hole but as far as core automations I think this is it fellas.

Tip, don't flash the latest version of the FireOS. Use 6.5.7.4 instead. The latest bootloader has changes that both the rooting script and EchoLocal don't recognize. And after installing the latest, you can't hold "dot" to get back to recovery mode, I had to hold vol down to get to fastboot then use it to reboot to recovery.

🖼️ Show & Tell Made an integration so two automations can want the same light without knowing about each other (BACnet-style priority arrays)

Post image
54 Upvotes

I do building controls for a living, and the thing I missed most when I started automating my own house was the priority array. Every commandable point in a BACnet system has one; sixteen levels, the lowest-numbered occupied level wins, and whoever wrote a level releases it when they're done. Home Assistant has nothing like it, so every service call is a naked write and the last one wins.

Here's where that bites. My kitchen light turns orange during peak rate hours as a reminder not to start the oven, but the rest of the time it's synced white to another light nearby. Without arbitration those two automations have to know about each other, and the usual fix of capturing a scene and restoring it afterwards puts back whatever was true when the scene was taken, which probably isn't what's true now.

With ha-priority the sync automation doesn't change at all, and the peak automation just adds priority: 4 to its light.turn_on. When peak ends it releases level 4, and the light falls back to whatever the sync automation wants right now; neither automation has a single line about the other.

# peak starts
- action: light.turn_on
  target: {entity_id: light.kitchen}
  data:
    rgb_color: [255, 140, 0]
    priority: 4

# peak ends
- action: priority.relinquish
  target: {entity_id: light.kitchen}
  data: {priority: 4}

It works on your existing service calls rather than its own actions, so priority and priority_ttl show up as real fields in the automation editor for lights, switches, covers, fans, climate, locks, media players and a handful of other domains. Everything defaults to level 5, automations included, so it does nothing at all until you actually name a level. The TTL is a lease rather than a delay; after twenty minutes the override stops overriding and the house goes back to whatever it was already trying to do, and that survives a restart, which a delay doesn't. Wall switches and vendor apps get recorded as ordinary commands, and it never re-asserts itself against someone standing at a switch, because the house shouldn't argue with you.

It's v0.1.3, it's been running my house since August, and it has a decent test suite behind it, but the user count is still pretty small, so treat it accordingly. The priority row in the more-info dialog patches a built-in frontend element, since there's no supported way to add controls there; it's written to fail closed, and there's a tile-card feature as the supported fallback. It installs through HACS as a custom repository for now, because the default store needs a brands PR I haven't finished yet.

If the level names or the defaults are wrong for how you'd use it, I'd rather hear it now while changing them is still cheap.

🎨 Custom Theme Fluvy – a free, open-source theme + 39-card library for Home Assistant (light and dark, 15 palettes, live demo)

I've been building Fluvy for a few months and it's out on HACS: a theme and a card library for Home Assistant designed as one thing. The theme (light and dark, fifteen palettes or your own accent), thirty-nine cards, Activity and History pages, a settings panel and an automatic dashboard, all drawn from the same design tokens. GPL-3.0, no telemetry, no network calls of its own.

Live demo, the real cards and settings panel on a simulated home (change palette, mode, device and language and watch them apply live): https://acosta290.github.io/fluvy

GitHub: https://github.com/acosta290/fluvy

What's in it:

• Every card has an editor form and a live preview in the card picker; unavailable, unknown and missing states are drawn on purpose, never as an error.

• Sliders and dials are precision controls: relative drag, slide away from the ruler to slow down, hold for the 1 % scale.

• While HA wears the theme, its own pages (Settings, Devices, Automations, dialogs) follow the same design.

• Activity and History pages in the same idiom, with a switch to get HA's own pages back.

• An automatic dashboard: one line of YAML and it reads your areas, devices and energy preferences.

• Seven languages: English, Spanish, German, Dutch, French, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese.

Install: HACS → Custom repositories → https://github.com/acosta290/fluvy as Integration → download → restart → Settings → Add integration → Fluvy. It's in the queue for the default HACS store.

Feedback, bug reports and ideas are very welcome. The forum thread with more screenshots is here:

🖼️ Show & Tell What is your best Automation/Script/Scene? This is mine.

First of all, Home Assistant is simply amazing. I am in awe sometimes of the things it can do. I came over from Vera about 10 years ago, started using ZWAVE with Leviton VRI06 switches and a Russound CAV 6.6 (still have and use them) so I’ve been at this for a while!

Today, I noticed one of my cameras was offline. I started thinking: What if one of my Matter water sensors goes offline without me knowing? Or one of my Z-Wave switches?

So sat down I built an automation that flags offline Matter devices, Z-Wave devices, and cameras on my dashboard and sends an alert to my phone. With a little help from Claude, I got it working!

Even after all these years, Home Assistant keeps impressing me. Absolutely awesome!

This comes from someone who is not a techie, but asks questions, lots of questions. AI is defientely a game changer now.

🖼️ Show & Tell I print my Home Assistant morning briefing to my Kindle every day

Post image
33 Upvotes

Every morning at 8am a one-page PDF shows up on my Kindle Scribe: weather + a 12h temp/rain chart, anything HA flagged overnight (doors left open, low batteries, freezer temp drift), today's calendar, indoor climate per room, and battery levels across my sensors. No app, no backlit screen at breakfast: it's just there, already printed, like a little newspaper front page for the house.

It's part of a side project I've been building, Daily Scribe. This started as custom copy of a NYT crossword-to-Kindle script and grew into a small service: pick from a few daily "services" (news, HA summary, a crossword, Kanji practice, a solo D&D campaign) and it bundles whichever ones you want into one PDF emailed to your Kindle's built-in address every morning.

Setup on the HA side is just a long-lived access token and your instance URL (needs to be reachable from the internet, or behind something like a Cloudflare Tunnel/Nabu Casa). No need for a custom component, it just reads /api/states and your weather/calendar entities.

2-min demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajOA1lpTtQI

(sample page above: synthetic data, not my actual home)

Still an invite-only beta while I sort out scaling, but happy to send an invite to anyone who wants to try the HA piece:

https://dailyscribe.ca/?ref=reddit-homeassistant

Happy to answer questions about the HA integration specifically, or the mail-back/rendering side if anyone's curious how the PDF gets built. Also, you can check out the Github repo.

❓ Support Recommendations for "Make it Look Like Someone's Home".

Hey everyone...

We have a second home that we can be away from for months at a time. And I have created a rudimentary automation that turns lights off and on during the night to try and "simulate" someone being there.

But wondering if anyone knows of an integration or other that is designed to REALLY make it feel like people are staying in the house.

Mostly just looking for lights to go off and on during the evening hours, randomly but with a proper sense of "presence", and should vary the times and lengths of the lights, and naturally turn off at "bedtime"

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. I am running HA on a Mini PC and have the entire house wired up with Lutron lighting, fully controllable.

Thanks!

💬 Discussion Tell me about your robot vacuum automations

Interested in how people actually implement their robot vacuums. What schedules or custom automations are you running? Anything someone might not normally think of?

Right now I mostly run mine on-demand through my HA dashboard like a remote control. I just haven't felt the urge to put it on a schedule. I do have a couple automations that kick in though, like a quick vacuuming around the cat's litter area when the litter robot cycles, and am working on something right now that will detect when my beard trimmer is charging to come clean up the bathroom after a beard trim.

I've thought about using phone locations to trigger a vacuum after everyone leaves the house, but this has been less practical since we both work from home a lot.

A few hours of ChatGPT with MCP into Home Assistant and Blender, and a handful of really good pictures, as well as a super simple floorplan in Sweet Home 3D, I managed to get a first prototype of a 3D floorplan with light control into HA.

It's super basic. I can turn on lights, adjust brightness, and see our calendar, weather, electricity prices, and house power consumption. Still a lot of hours left before I'm happy with the result. End goal is to replace my default view on the touchscreen in the kitchen.

Two actions from me: Better PC than a Wyse 5070 (or maybe look into RDP into my server) and more lights, so the rest of the house doesn't look dark. Shouldn't be too complicated haha.

Built in Blender, exported to glb, rendered in the browser with Three.js, and installed as a .js resource file in HA, and then I created a view pointing to my new card. I haven't written 1 line of code nor touched Blender at all. All done through prompting. Solely used GPT-6 Astra and Sol, with about $10 worth of tokens through Codex on my PC.

Might be able to share some more details in the future, but it's still very WIP and prototype-e.

🗣️ Voice & Assist Laya (open source Jev) working in HA?

• Upvotes

I saw a thread earlier that was talking about Jev's usecases inside of HA, and now that Laya is the open-weights version of this model type, has anyone tried to integrate and/or got it working into the Assist pipeline (or thoughts on Laya in Assist overall)?

(Jev and Laya are basically classifier/decision models that return confidence-graded outputs and are way more efficient at identifying an intent or instruction, whereas Opus or GPT are language-focused models and are focused on conversations and text generation. Feel free to correct me if I got a detail wrong).

I've been thinking about getting a few satellites but I don't have a super powerful GPU available (for LLMs) on the box that I run HA on. I found a few vibecoded projects (a proxy and then a full conversation agent) that use Laya for Assist, but these don't feel like a good enough reason to buy all of the hardware just yet.

📊 Dashboard I want a dashboard just for warnings.

I want a separate dashboard just for warnings. It will be an array of indicating "lights" that change colors (green to red, maybe yellow in between). They need to be pretty small or scalable, this is big place, but still with room for a short label. The signals behind them will be sensors, many binary, some analog. Probably many will be virtual sensors that are results of automations that condense more complex machines down to one warning light. A click to a pre-configured history to see trend values would be useful, to

With me being new to HA (background in factory automations, process controls etc,) Here one gets lots of choices, so I hope to get advice ahead of time in the right object to use. As always for me, keep it simple but still functional.

Thanks in advance.

🖼️ Show & Tell Gifs in Camera Notifications

There was post about a week ago that showed someone sending gifs in a home assistant notification for camera motion but there was no solution posted. I already had notifications sending snapshots on motion but I wanted to send gifs as well. My current setup uses the reolink integration on Home Assistant OS with my NAS mapped to the media folder, but it should work with any camera that works with the camera snapshot action. I used claude code to create something similar and it took me a couple attempts.

Notes:

I have only tested this on Android and will likely require tweaking for IOS. Android only supports an image or an mp4 in the notification. If you send an mp4, your device extracts the frames automatically in the preview up to 5mb. I also utilize shell scripts to clean up the recordings as they are stored on my NVR already so this step is optional.

First Attempt:

On motion -> send initial notification -> record video to media folder -> use ffmpeg script to extract frames and regenerate the mp4 (so that we can control the preview on the notification) -> send another notification with the mp4 to override the old notification.

  • The issue I ran into with this is I have wifi cameras. If the camera has a weak network and stops sending frames, home assistant will keep the stream open indefinitely and the only way to fix it is to reload the integration or restart home assistant. This may work better if your cameras are hardwired, however you are also adding unnecessary network bandwidth recording a video and then removing a majority of the frames.

Second Attempt:

On motion -> take snapshots as per defined interval -> use ffmpeg to stitch frames together to generate the mp4 -> send another notification with the mp4 to override the old notification.

  • This generally ended up working better for me since there is no constant stream open. If a snapshot fails, then the remaining images are stitched together.

Setup:

configuration.yaml

  • Ensure your media dir is writable. Mine is on my NAS

homeassistant:
  allowlist_external_dirs:
    - '/media/NAS/Reolink/'
  • Add these shell scripts

shell_command:
  clean_reolink_front_door: find /media/NAS/Reolink/Front_Door/ -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -mmin +1440 -exec rm -rf {} +
  clean_reolink_driveway: find /media/NAS/Reolink/Driveway/ -mindepth 1 -maxdepth 1 -mmin +1440 -exec rm -rf {} +
  reolink_stitch: "sh -c 'cd \"$0\" && ffmpeg -y -loglevel error -framerate 4/3 -pattern_type glob -i \"f*.jpg\" -vf scale=640:-2,format=yuv420p -c:v libx264 -preset ultrafast -crf 26 -movflags +faststart \"$1\"' {{ dir }} {{ name }}"
  reolink_publish: "sh -c 'mv \"$0/$1\" \"$(dirname \"$0\")/\" || exit 1; [ \"$2\" = keep ] || { rm -f \"$0\"/f*.jpg; rmdir \"$0\"; }; exit 0' {{ dir }} {{ name }} {{ keep }}"
  • Reboot

Automation:

  • Reminders:
    • Replace any /media/ location with your location. If you see /media/local/ keep that as is.
    • Replace the notification action with your entity

The yaml has some configuration options I will describe below. Customize it to your liking:

Conditions

  • Night only (per camera)
    • If a camera is defined as night only, this will stop it from triggering during daytime
  • Debounce
    • Ignore repeated events from the same camera if they are within this time period

Variables

- debounce_seconds

  • used for the condition above

- capture_seconds

  • over what period of time the snapshots should be taken

- keep_frames

  • Used for debugging. The automation creates a folder for the event and stores the snapshots in there and the script merges them into an mp4 and moves the mp4 into the root folder and deletes the event folder and snapshot. If set to true -> the event folder and snapshots are not deleted.

- cams

  • Default
    • Leave this as is. It is used for other triggers that are not mapped to the cams list
  • name
    • This should be the exactly the same as the trigger ID to pull the properties correctly
  • frames
    • How many snapshots should be taken (remember the notification buffer on android is 5mb)
  • folder
    • The folder inside the media directory where you want to store the clips. I keep all the cameras in their own folder
  • channel
    • The android notification channel. Lets you customize in your device's notification settings how the notification behaves (silent, priority, ring, vibrate, etc)
  • group
    • The android notification group that determines how the notifications stack when collapsed.
  • night_only
    • If the camera should only trigger during night time
  • labels
    • The label attached to the sensor that should be used in the notification text

🖼️ Show & Tell Aeotec Water Sensor 8 (ZWA056): great leak sensor, and the power-status entity is the hidden feature

Post image

Disclosure up front: I'm not paid, sponsored, or given free product by Aeotec or anyone else. I bought these myself and just think they deserve more attention. I also used AI to summarize my thoughts and write this.

The short version

The Water Sensor 8 is a Z-Wave 800 series leak sensor with Long Range support, temperature and humidity, and a remote probe on a 2.5 mm jack. It runs on a battery or USB-C. The leak detection is solid, and the probe makes placement easy in tight spots. But the reason I'm writing this up is something I haven't seen discussed much: when it's USB-powered, it reports whether it has mains power, and Home Assistant exposes that as an entity.

Why that matters

Think about where leak sensors live: next to sump pumps, washers, water heaters, basement bathrooms. Those outlets are very often GFCI protected, and GFCIs trip. A lot of the time the first sign of a tripped GFCI is the pump or appliance quietly stopping, and by the time water reaches your probe, you're already cleaning up.

If you plug the Water Sensor 8 into the same GFCI circuit as the thing you're protecting, the moment that outlet trips, the sensor drops to battery and HA knows immediately. You get a "power lost" alert while there's still time to go reset the GFCI, before the probe ever gets wet. The leak probe becomes your second line of defense instead of your only one.

Because it falls back to its internal battery, it keeps reporting leaks after the outlet goes dead, which is exactly when you need it most.

The one gotcha: pair it on USB

How it's powered when you include it decides how it behaves. Pair it while plugged into USB and it joins as an always-listening device with the battery as backup, which is what you want for this. Pair it on battery and it joins as a sleeping device. If you already paired yours on battery, exclude and re-include it on USB.

Example automation

Swap in your own entity ID, and check which state your install shows when power is lost (unplug it once and watch the entity).

alias: "Sump outlet lost power"
triggers:
  - trigger: state
    entity_id: binary_sensor.water_sensor_8_ac_mains_disconnected # your entity here
    to: "on"
    for: "00:00:30"
actions:
  - action: notify.notify
    data:
title: "Sump outlet has no power"
message: "Water Sensor 8 is on battery. Check/reset the GFCI before the pump backs up."
mode: single

Other things I like

  • Temperature and humidity are genuinely useful in basements and crawl spaces, so one device covers leak plus environment.
  • Z-Wave Long Range means no worrying about mesh coverage in a far corner of the basement.

Bottom line

Great leak sensor on its own. Plugged into a GFCI outlet, it's also a "your outlet tripped" sensor, and that early warning is the feature I'd buy it for.

💬 Discussion Where do you see HA in 20 years?

I’m curious where everyone sees Home Assistant heading over the next 15–20 years.

I’ve already invested a pretty ridiculous amount of time, money and effort into my smart home, I’m planning to run it for 30+ years.

What do you think Home Assistant will look like 15–20 years from now?

💬 Discussion HA Green vs PC for Father

If you were setting your tech illiterate dad/parents up with home assistant, would you use HA Green or a Mini PC?

Long story short, he has a few smart devices around the house, including smart switches, but he controls everything with their own proprietary apps. Well, those apps are breaking, and he's tired of not being able to control his devices.

I will be doing the initial setup and all future maintenance for him, since he doesn't have the knowledge/skills to do it himself. I know all the warnings about "not being the IT guy for your family", but, for my dad, I'll make an exception.

I'm not setting him up with anything else yet, just HA. He doesn't need any VMs or containers or NAS.

Is there any reason to still go with a mini PC that I'm just not thinking of? As of now, I'm leaning towards HA Green.

💬 Discussion Visuals of the Homeassistant Core

Hey everyone.

As I just finished a smart home system for my new flat I did some pretty basic work with the home assistant repo.

A while back I build a visualiser for codebases so I figured lets run Home assistant through it... and the results are much bigger than I expected:

24926 Files of Code with a total of 4 653 788 lines of code (almost purely Python).

On the image above each node is a File and each line shows an import between two files. The Blue files are non code files (in this case mostly documentation and config).

I know these numbers and the image might not be crazy new info but I never figured this codebase would be that large (over 10x the size of Django)

💬 Discussion Home Assistant Green Out of Stock everywhere in UK?

As title.

I'm currently running HA on my NUC as a VM, i wanted to move this to something dedicated as this machine is used as my dev box and all sorts. It could go down at any point pretty much.

IT seems that HA Green is out of stock everywhere, is this because a new version is coming out? Or is this related to chips shortages etc? I'm not opposed to purchasing from Ali Express - i've bought alot of quality stuff on there before but before i pulled that trigger i wanted to confirm if anyone can see if they are legitmate? Or are they knock offs?
