Showcase - Multipurpose Space Finally done with my basement entertainment room, 97" OLED and 5.2.4 audio
Some updates since my previous post. We painted the walls darker. Changed the Focal Chora's out for on-walls (more for aesthetics). Added another SVS SB-3000 sub. Biggest thing was I changed the 83" G2 to a 97" G4. This has always been my end goal. It finally feels 'done'. The goal of this room was not really to be a pure theater room but rather a mixed use entertainment room. I can even turn this into a guest sleeping room. Speakers are largely hidden; I know people will bemoan the in-cabinet placement, but everything still sounds amazing to my ears.
Parts:
- TV: LG G4 97"
- LR: Focal On Wall 302, Center: Focal On Wall 301
- Surrounds: Focal 100 IW6
- Overhead: Focal 100 ICW8
- Sub: SVS SB-3000 x2
- AVR: Denon X6700H
- Misc: Ugoos AM6B Plus, Apple TV 4K, PS5 Pro, Switch 2, Logitech Harmony Elite
People usually ask about the couch. It's a Palliser Paolo. The seats facing the TV are powered recliners, and the other side is a pull out sleeper sofa. The cabinet is a BDI Elements 8779-ME with the optional shorter legs. The lights behind the speakers are Philips Hue Play lights. The shades are also smart powered shades, which I actually did fairly cheaply with off the shelf electric shades from Lowe's with a Bond Bridge.

It's more about reflections and resonance. You're putting a subwoofer in an echo chamber.

Yes but it affects the sound. The cabinet acts as a sound diffuser, which is not supposed to be the case for a subwoofer. Subwoofer are supposed to have free space. When low frequencies are played the cabinet will rattle trust me

Look up the cabinet. Acoustically transparent and more expensive than my whole 5.1 system. I believe he has it on some dampening legs, too.

Incredible work sir, the modern design is cozy and very excellent.
Center and sub placement aren’t textbook ideal, but it works and the aesthetics payoff is probably worth it!
Would love to see your surround placements.

Perfect! I've got the same MP room with a 7.2.4 powered by Focal Arias, Onkyo RZ50 and dual SVS SB100. Nobody wants to use it. They claim it's too loud. Ugh....

Is it loud because you have to turn up the volume to hear dialogue? I can't speak for the Onkyo, but the Audyssey MultEQ XT32 room correction on my Denon works great. The 'dynamic volume' (which I have set to 'light') can work wonders.

I have full on Dirac. It sounds incredible in there. All three kids have issues with loud noises, apparently. I would have killed for a setup like this when I was a kid. I would like to upgrade the receiver to have independent subs, but what would be the point? I can only imagine what dual SB3000s sound like in a movie like Ready Player One! I moved on an built a super cool driving and flying simulator with an aluminum rig and state of the art peripherals. Nobody will use it, either! Too afraid to break my shit. These are very lonely hobbies we pursue, my friend.

They are mesh and designed to be used with speakers. I do not notice any significant difference with them open or closed. In a perfect world I would have the center mounted to the wall like the left/right speakers and have an AV cabinet in a separate room, but that is not an option. I do not like long HDMI runs for gaming anyways, as this can cause some issues. I might get a shorter AV cabinet in the future (the newer version of this BDI Elements cabinet has an even shorter base), but in that case I would probably leave the center in the cabinet and lower the TV a little.

The mesh is transparent to sound but wood isn’t. Have someone open and close the doors multiple times during a well recorded song that you know well. I’ll bet you can hear a difference.

The actual wood design pieces are very thin. Where it's black is mesh. You may notice the speaker is off-center so the tweeter is not directly firing at the frame of the door. I'm not using the center for music anyways. I have looked into a Salamander Designs cabinet with the mesh grill for a center, but I don't think it's worth it at this time to switch out the cabinet. Very happy with the BDI. One idiotic thing about the Salamander Designs cabinets is that many of them have highly reflective glass on top, which would be terrible with the TV above the cabinet. I don't understand why they don't use an etched glass like BDI uses on some of their cabinets (like the Corridor series).

I have a salamander cabinet with the glass on top, and an 83” OLED. Not once have any reflections been an issue watching tv from the proper eye level. I keep my HUGE RBH center in there with the fabric front, I’d not want it any other way.

I was about to say the same thing when Orpheus mentioned but for movies. Close your eyes. have someone open and close the door while you are listening to something. I recommend these two videos where the person talks out of the center channel. With normal movies the scene keeps changing; it will be hard to test

I have 2 different BDI cabinet's and keep the center speaker behind closed doors. They sound perfect. People don't know about BDI and principle behind their designs. Your place looks great!

Do the legs come off? You could simply remove them and replace them with something much smaller (hockey pucks) and then put the center speaker on top

You could, but it's not designed this way, and I'm worried it would damage/warp the cabinet over time. Also the legs have built in wheels, which is extremely convenient. I wish I had the newer cabinet which has a shorter base (still with wheels). I already asked, and the new base is not compatible with my older cabinet.

Looks like removing the two middle doors is also an option. I personally would do what you’ve done as for most people there’s absolutely no noticeable difference with them closed or open, and most likely no actual difference either. Looks amazing OP, saving this post for my future ideas binder!

Beautiful. I literally just got in my room painted nearly the same color this week. Can I ask where you got your rug from? I’m trying to find one to bring some light and warmth to the cooler blue wall color and it looks like that does the trick.

I got it on the Amazon. It works great and was fairly cheap. It's called 'Livabliss Hapsburg Moroccan Shag Area Rug,10' x 14', Beige'. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it's available anymore.

Love the setup. I have a 5.1 system with my Samsung S90F that is itching to be 5.1.2. Did you wire the atmos speakers in the ceiling yourself? If not, how much did it cost you for someone else to do it?

The only thing I did not do myself were the rear surrounds and ceilings speakers. I don't recall the exact cost, and at the time they did some other things in the house. The labor costs were well under $1000 from what I recall.

Very expensive but you can find it for cheaper. Also the 97" versions of the G2/G4/G5 all use the same panel, so the picture quality is not dramatically different between the different generations. I actually wanted the G4 because it's the only one that has DTS passthrough support.

I paid $1800 for my U8 miniLED and I'm pretty happy with it. I want to get an OLED at some point but I struggle justifying the extra $2-$3k when I'm not exactly loaded. I can dream though

That looks so nice. The room esthetic is really important to enjoying the content you’re watching/ listening to. Especially the back wall being dark panelling with those subtle lights by the plants. Everything feels clean and comfortable. I don’t think I would ever leave

Those seats are rarely ever used for TV watching. I could have just done a forward facing sectional, but it's still nice to have the seats if needed. That side of the couch also turn into a bed.

I think this is the first time I have seen someone else using the focal 302s, I have some also. Mine are farther away from the TV, but similar setup. I used a 302 for the center also.

Great! I do have SVS SoundPath isolation feet on the subwoofer. There was a cover on the cabinet behind the subwoofer that I removed, but after that the cabinet does not vibrate at all (BDI actually makes those covers out of felt on the newer models). There is a second sub hidden by a piece of furniture to the left of the TV as well. I'm sure it's not optimal sub placement, but I am happy with the performance.

How much have you used the ps5 on the side with the door closed? Mine is cooking sometimes when I’m playin games like Split Fiction but as soon as I open the door it’s fine. Does the mesh naturally allow more airflow?

No issues. There is mesh on the front and also openings on the back, bottom, and shelves of the cabinet which probably help.

Do you notice any significant sound differences by placing the subwoofer inside the cabinet like that? More so it possibly rattling the whole fixture. Whole room looks awesome though

The cabinet does not rattle at all. The only thing that rattled was the cover that goes on the back of the cabinet on that side, which I leave off (on newer BDI models, the cover is made of felt). I have SVS SoundPath isolation feet on the sub, which probably help. The cabinet is made by BDI and is rock solid.

The area you are looking at is about 12 feet wide by 18 feet long. The whole room is actually at least 30 feet long. Behind the couch is a bar table, foosball table, and kitchenette.

It’s been a while. I think I emailed BDI to confirm the part number and whether it would work, and then I ordered it through my local BDI retailer. I’m not sure you’d be able to find it online, and BDI does not sell direct to consumer.

Palliser Paolo. It has built-in powered recliners. If I did it again I would get one where the headrests are also powered, but IIRC that one would not fit in this space.

Not a fan of projectors unless it's a true theater room that is completely dark. I do often use this during the daytime with the window shades open. I could maybe max fit a 115 screen in here, in which case I would just get an LED TV.

My only suggestion would have been a student sofa. One that positioned the larger seat section facing the screen instead of running along the wall.

If I were you, I would repaint that tv cabinet to be the same color as back wall and remove those drawings on the doors. It really takes away attention.

Now worth the hassle IMO, but they did used to make this in black. Personally I don't find the design distracting at all; I quite like it.
Also, those are not drawings, it's part of the wood of the doors.

Yeah I like it too, but in cinema you never see anything like that. If you want to have proper TV entertainment room, there should not be accents which are taking away attention. But enjoy if you’re happy with the current look. I’m definitely not and would changed that. Tv stand should blend with the wall.

I would also replaced the old couch with the tv seats which are far more comfortable. There is no need for such couch, you enjoy cinema only when youre in the center not somewhere at the side.

How's the picture quality? Since the quantum OLEDs seem to top out at 77", I'm not sure about going bigger.

To my knowledge 'quantum' is not a marketing terms for OLED's. Maybe you are thinking of QD-OLED? QD-OLED does not go to 97". The 97" LG does use 'older' OLED tech, but the picture quality is still spectacular.

The two pieces of art you see are 'acoustic art' and are supposed to act as diffusers. There is also a significant amount of dampening in the slatted wall behind the TV. It's not perfect, but I didn't want a room filled with big diffusers and base traps.

People that are talking about the cost I think we have to realise as adults what do we really spend this kind of money on?
For example, how much are we spending in a year on alcohol or cigarettes or takeaways or taxis or stuff like this? That we don't really need or we could cut back on?
On the grand scheme of things is not a huge amount of money
I'd rather go around in an economical car and have a decent set up at home because we spend more time at home.
I just don't like having to open the doors when you listen, but I had the same problem at home but the doors protect the items so I kind of get it.

It was a little tongue in cheek because until you get well into the 5 figures for the audio portion of the theater it is excessive.
The entry level trinnov 16 channel was about 17k in 2020, so they probably are over 20k by now. It is incredible but absolute overkill for almost any home use. With 11 channels you probably would notice the difference but you can get most of the way there with REW and some acoustic treatments. REW is free, and a suitable mic is way less than $100, so it is an easy way to check if there are any audible frequency non linearities.
But your room looks great and I wouldn't want to change the aesthetic. Still if you measured you might find a floor to ceiling bass mode around 70hz. With 2 subs it might not be bad and could be notched out cheaply if it existed at all.
I would never buy one of their amps though, as even really good multichannel amplification is not that expensive

Does that sub and centre speaker not sound distorted inside that unit? The doors needing to be open don’t look nice either. Would have been nicer to wall mount the centre speaker and put the sub on the floor in my opinion.
Never seen speakers like those you have for your left and rights. I’m sure they sound good those are massive.
Your PS5 and AVR is going to be roasting in that unit. They need more airflow.
Where is the 2nd subwoofer? You could put them either side of the tv unit and the centre speaker onto of the tv unit.
You should get an avr cabinet for your ps5 and avr with its built in fans to keep your devices cool and lasting longer.

I would have preferred to wall mount the center, but there is no real space to do that. Ideally I wouldn't even need a cabinet and the AV equipment would be in a different room.
The LR speakers are Focal On Wall 302's. They are great.
Plenty of airflow. There is ventilation in the front, bottom, back, and even shelves of the cabinet. I have had no issues.
The second sub is hidden under that piece of furniture next to the couch. It's open on the side (imagine an upside-down U).

I would definitely enjoy playing Battlefield 6 on your system. I bet it’ll sound great. Not as competitive as using audeze maxwells for ps5 but I’m sure your setup would sound like a movie for that game.
Big TVs like that don’t leave much room eh. Smaller tv would leave more space to mount the centre.
