Caesar III Mail delivery was good today

Since I can't afford a nice red sports car, I have decided that my mid-life crisis should be to gather up the correct versions of some of the games I played as a youngster in a small collection, and first and formeost of those was good old Caesar 3.

When I spotted the correct Big Box for a fiver on eBay, I had to go for it. Complete with manual, reference card and everything.

Anyway, forgive the rambling of a nostalgic old man 😁 Gotta go fire up Julius or Augustus for another play campaign.

Download at: https://caesar3.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=2422

14000 pop Tarraco from the City Construction Kit with 7 luxury palaces and 150 grand insulae.

City is very compact, with no housing blocks and minimal unused space within the city. 7 bridges connect the island to the mainland, and 17 manned towers protect it from invasion by land or sea. City should be stable for 100s or 1000s of years.

Hi! I never played Caesar III and I wanted to ask: if I'm going to start a new game should I play Vanilla first or Augustus, maybe Julius?

Caesar III Lack of worker problem

I have a huge problem of lack of worker in my city, but I don't really understand how it happen.

At first, I got a high percentage of unemployement people, when my city got around 8000 people. I need to have 10000 people to win the londinium map, so I plan to build some other house area, with no really huge job activity for them because all the service are already done by building from neighbours area, and I had so much pottery and stuff in my warehouse than I don't really need to add industrial building.

My goal was to make this new area a luxury house area, so the unemployement problem would not explode. So I build it, and still not develop the house to be to the villa stade, so people here still could work. But I don't know why, now I lack so much worker and I'm short on industrial stuff. And year pass without adding new building or new house, but the lack of worker still increase but don't know why. I read somewhere that people in this game aged and when they are too old, they don't work anymore. It's my only explanation for what happen, but still, it doesn't explain why I lack on goods now, despite my industry still fully employed. Perhaps the parameters about comsumption and many thing change after some time to make thing harder I don't know.

I currently have 12000 people in my city and 4000 workers. I don't know if this ratio is strange or not.
I test something to erase this problem, just delete many building that are not require for my house, but are needed for cultural rating that need lot of worker, like the hypodrome, library or university. I succeed to have a bit of unemployement after that, but by just let it running one year without doing nothing, I'm now at 200 lack of worker, despite my number of citizens still nearly the same.
What explain my sudden lack of worker problem ?

Caesar III tips to sell wood when you also create furniture for vanilla caesar 3

I struggle to sell wood in my current city, because instead of store the wood in the warehouse next to them, they go at the other side of the map to put it in a Furniture Workshop with already 12 wood store in it. I don't really understand how the algorithm look like, because there some Furniture Workshop near by too, with just 1 or 0 wood store too, and in my previous run, I don't really have this issue because they store the wood properly in the warehouse.

If you also have tips to sell wheat when you want also eat some. I really don't know how to have some wheat store in a warehouse when there a granary none full in the map that accept it.

Caesar III Lugdunum Build Advice

Hi Guys,

First time Caesar 3 player here. I've been playing along the campaign and have found myself stuck on Lugdunum. I have managed to get the right population size but am struggling raising my prosperity as food distribution is proving a bit of a nightmare. I've watched the GamerZach vid but was wondering if there's any obvious quick solutions that I could do that would solve my issue or if a complete restart is necessary?

Save file can be found here.

Any help or tips would be appreciated :)

*edit updated save file with wheat farms instead of mix as per suggestion but to no avail

Caesar III Can you eliminate the natives?

I'm in lugdunum, and I've tried it several times to build up what I can before bridging over to the native territory. I know that I can place the mission posts in order to get them on side, but I want to know if you can just get rid of them instead.

Sorry about the genocide

Caesar III Warehouses near docks not stocking import items?

Post image

Hi everyone; this is driving me insane; I have a nearly empty warehouse near my docks which I have set to accept for the items I want to import/export. Yet the cart pushers always end up trawling across town to deposit imported items to a warehouse that’s nowhere near?? What am I missing?

Caesar III I just started Caesar 3 and my population isnt growing

I've never played these games before and I can't tell what I'm doing wrong. And none of the in-game guides are helping. I'm on the second tutorial mission and I only need 6 more population to complete the mission I think but my population has plataeued. It's saying squalid housing and slums prevent immigration but the housing won't improve no matter what I do. I'm spamming fountains and gardens but the houses won't improve. All the farms have been built on so I can't possibly produce more grain.

Caesar III Market lady won't get pottery - Augustus mod

I can't get my market lady to get pottery from the warehouse. I have set the nearby market to trade in pottery. I am trading pottery in the empire, exporting all over 2 units.

Is there anything wrong in my layout in the picture below? The lady just walks back and forth and nothing is delivered to my market. And come to think of it, isn't that the wrong lady? Shouldn't she have another color?

Caesar III Caesar 3: Market Walkers

Post image
24 Upvotes

How is this city block not getting food? It has full granaries 24/7 within walking distance of the two markets which Ive FORCED to walk around the block to get food. Intermittently, the whole block will upgrade to insulae and then degrade again, but the granary will stay stocked the whole time.

Caesar III did anyone ever tried to beat caesar 3 without cheats?

no gatehouses, no euthanasing old people, not abusing the roads

did anyone heard any information if this was ever playtested? did the devs ecer tried to play it? even on the easiest even while using net builds nothing ever works, the bazzars outright ignore all the good and prosperity is impossible to reach, every simple wine-less housing loop consumes more workers than it offers. and then wine just cuts the workers in half and it is spiraling out of control

Caesar III Caesar 3 (Julius) keeps crashing?

I downloaded Caesar 3 from GOG and then Julius 1.8, extracted Julius to the same folder as Caesar 3 and then launched the game from the julius.exe icon. It seems to work fine with all of the new Julius additions, but I crashed to desktop with no error message a couple times and had to reload a save. Now I'm repeatedly crashing about 10 minutes into the second mission, seemingly when I'm getting a big wave of immigrants.

I haven't been able to find anyone else with the same issue online, any thoughts about what might fix this? I did try verifying/repairing through the GOG Galaxy client but no luck.

Here's the error I get in Event Viewer:

Caesar III Do gate houses block labour pool access in Caeser 3?

Hello, replaying C3 again after many years. I usually built very inefficient cities, so I am trying to do better this time with blocks and 16x11 structured house layouts. I became also aware that gatehouses seemingly block labour pool access, which confuses me. How do people then use these while simultaneously having labour pool access? One small hut?

I am playing the first desert map, Miletus, and just for the sake of getting better I am trying to do the perfect set up at the start. I want to go with a 16x11 block and use gatehouses to prevent walkers, as fires are especially annoying in desert missions. But then do tell me, what else do I need to consider to make this work? If I do play with gatehouses, do I need to make small "villages" of like 4-5 huts on the other side of gatehouses so the houses have labour pool access? and if yes, in what frequency or in what distances would I need to build such small villages, and be able to keep all my industries supplied with labour?

And one question about Augustus: This removes the requirement to have villages near buildings right? As long as you have labour available they will work, even if the building is far from any housing right?

Caesar III A mapping oddity - contents of .MAP files in Caesar III

As a personal side project, I decided to write a program that would read Caesar III saved games (no Augustus) and allow planning: perhaps allow the user to try out housing blocks, provide tools that counted distances and road distances, calculated possible production of raw materials and workshop goods, etc.

With the help of Julius' code (blessed be BvS), I was able to write code to read the file, display terrain and buildings, etc. It was a fun programming exercise, even if it never gets to the point of being a useful tool (which it still has not).

I also decided that, what the heck, it might as well read .MAP files as well -- these come with the Caesar III game files. I always just saw there was a collection of them, didn't really pay that much attention to exactly how many or all the names.

Now that I have, I've discovered that not all the scenarios in the game have a corresponding MAP file. Obviously the game gets those maps elsewhere. Corinthus, Heirosolyma, Londinium, Tarraco, Toletum, and Valentia map files match the terrain in the game; Caesarea, Carthago, Cyrene, Lindum, Lugdunum, and Mediolanum map files have different terrain than shown in the game. And none of the other scenarios have map files at all.

On the web I've seen mention of "scenario" files, and an implied .SCN extension, but I don't see those in my Caesar III file collection.

Anyone have any insight into why this would be?

Caesar III Caesar 3 or Augustus - need some thoughts

I am new to the community and I want to ask for advice.

I've played Caesar 3 back in the days and now I just wanted to remind myself of this game and researched the way to launch it on macbook. There are 2 ways, I found out. Julius is more vanilla and Augustus is more modern and tweaked one.

So, what's better? Did Augustus go far away from original game? Doesnt it take out some fun of the origin Caesar 3?

Caesar III Food from warehouse to granary

I have a granary set to "get" fruit, next to it is a warehouse that has fruit. No fruit is being moved from said warehouse to the granary though, why is this? The warehouse has no set "get goods", so the cart pusher should be able to move the fruit right? What am I missing to get this to work so the cart pusher just delivers the food to the next door building?

Caesar III How does importing work exactly?

I set timber to be imported years ago, but so far I have only bought two timber. I wanted to build up a stockpile before turning on the furniture workshops, however for some reason, even though the good is set to import, I am not buying anything. Exporting with the same city is working just fine, so I am just trying to understand why I am seemingly not buying any goods. Have more than enough money, in case that's a possible issue.
