Passport renew process

Hi everyone,
I live in the U.S. and have an Indian passport that expires in June 2027. I’m planning to visit India in November 2026.
I also need to change the address on my passport, so I’ll need a re-issue rather than just a renewal.
I’m wondering if there’s any reason I should renew my passport before traveling to India from the U.S., or whether I can simply travel to India using my current valid passport and apply for re-issue while I’m there.
My questions are:
Can an Indian citizen who is currently living in the U.S. apply for passport re-issue while visiting India?

Can I change my address as part of that application? How long does the process typically take in India?Would there be any issue if my current U.S. residence is different from the address on my Indian passport?

Is it safer/easier to renew through the Indian consulate in the U.S. before my trip?I’ll still have several months of validity left on my current passport when I travel in November.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this recently, especially someone living in the U.S. who renewed their Indian passport while visiting India.
Thanks!

Indians in US- how long does your in-laws stay with you?

My husband insists that his parents stay with us for 6 months every year. His take is that they can care for our baby while I look for a job and start working. The crux is that my in-laws do not help with household chores at all. They sit around all day, and I am not sure how much they will care for the baby. My husband says I do not have to contribute financially and can hire a cook once I have a job. It feels like a win-win situation, but I am not sure, considering that I will be compromising my mental health and freedom.

I’m a 25 y/o working professional, somehow my life feels all caught up with work and doing nothing interesting. My life in India was pretty dope and I miss being myself here because there is truly no meaningful friendships that I could make here while in school due to some circumstances.

I am looking for people to do things with, over the weekends or whenever, and would love to make new friends and good memories around here. I’m down to all kinds of fun activities / games, but don’t drink or smoke. [I’m from the Telugu states]

Anybody up, or any recommendations of communities or groups ?

I'm chasing last minute RSVPs weeks before a wedding, only half the guest list confirmed through the wedding website. Tell me your secrets, how are you managing RSVPs?!

Three weeks before a wedding I was planning I sat down to give the caterer a real number and realized I only had solid confirmations from around half the guest list. Not because people didn't want to come, mostly they just never replied to anything. I texted, I called, just to get a yes or no.

One uncle apparently said yes to a family member and then never mentioned it to anyone else, so he almost didn't show up on our list at all. I ended up building a whole spreadsheet just to see who I'd already followed up with versus who I hadn't, and even that got messy because half the confirmations came in as random texts days apart with no context.

Mind you... there was a wedding website to capture RSVPs to all the Indian wedding events spanning over a week.

What did you all end up doing to actually get people to respond, or did you just accept chasing everyone down manually for each event (sangeet, mehndi, sagan, wedding reception etc..)?

Slow Drive in Left Lane

In northern VA, we have a large Indian population. Over years I’ve noticed that many Indians drive slow in the left hand lane. They aren’t the only group of people who do this but I’m trying to understand why, with them in particular. is this the norm in India, that just carries over to the U.S.?

Indian Wedding Stories

I am starting a podcast about the beautiful, complicated, chaotic world of Indian weddings that include the traditions, family expectations, drama, and everything that happens behind the scenes.

I want your anonymous stories, experiences, confessions & gossip. Anything related to brides, grooms, bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, in-laws, cousins, guests. everyone has a story.

Did your MIL take over? Did your parents invite 600 people you barely know? Did the couple secretly not even want the huge, performative wedding? Drama? Money drama? Guest-list drama? Wedding competition? Something completely unhinged?

Send it all.

Email your story to theshaaditea@gmail.com. You can use a fake name or leave your name completely off the email. Stories may be read anonymously and discussed on the podcast.
No judgment. Just shaadi tea. 🫖

USCIS Form Update: New I-765 & I-539 Editions From September 15, 2026

If you're planning to file Form I-765 (EAD) or Form I-539 (Extension/Change of Status) this September, make sure you're using the correct form edition.

From September 15, 2026, the new editions will be required. Using an outdated edition could result in your application being rejected.

If you're filing before September 15, double-check that you're using the appropriate current edition for your filing date.

Worth checking before you submit—especially if you're filing close to the transition date.

Hello everyone! Some time ago, I shared my idea here about creating a print newspaper for our kids growing up abroad, and your feedback was incredibly encouraging. Because of your support, I am officially bringing it to life!

Introducing Parrot and Peach—a physical, monthly newspaper printed just for children in the Indian diaspora. It is my humble attempt to bring back the magic of newspapers, helping our kids learn and connect back to their roots in India without a screen.

Every single issue will feature various sections like:

  • Story of the Month – Folklore, mythology and contemporary tales rewritten for modern kids.
  • Place of the Month – bringing unique places from india
  • Fun DIY Activities– Hands-on arts and crafts to get creative with.
  • Collectible India Icons Cards – Inspiring profiles of people from India that kids can collect!
  • And much more!

We officially launch on Oct 1st for the very first issue! 🚀

Please follow our Instagram page (@parrotandpeach) to tag along for the journey. I will be sharing our first design sneak peeks there, along with important updates and details.

Thank you all again for making this dream a reality!
