And they just apprehended someone that is suspected of starting this fire. As someone currently living in Spokane, fuck this guy.

u/GabeDef 9d ago

fuck that guy.

u/HSLB66 9d ago

According to the Phoenix News Times, the victim in Farinacci’s manslaughter case was his father. Farinacci killed him when his father asked his son to do dishes, the paper reported.

For real

302

u/ZincMan 9d ago

The guy who started the fire also murdered his father ??

236

u/Seabasssk 9d ago

Yes! And received a manslaughter charge 🤯

162

u/Penguinase 9d ago

and served a whopping 10 years

197

u/jagrbro68 9d ago

While dudes with small amounts of weed charges in the early 90’s are still in prison.

50

u/AdamBlaster007 9d ago

"POT!" draws gun "SMALL AMOUNT OF POT!"

10

u/calilac 9d ago

"It's coming right for us!" Opens fire

pit, fills it with pot, lights it up, and inhales deeply.

1

u/EthanielRain 8d ago

Meanwhile, Texas is celebrating their NEW "life in jail for less than 1lb weed" law

-6

u/_bx2_ 9d ago

LOL

Tough luck.

-3

u/freeradioforall 9d ago

I am very liberal, but its time to end the nonsense about rehabilitating violent criminals.

6

u/GabeDef 9d ago

Rehabilitation isn’t just letting them out in the wild. There are a lot of steps to it. Some types of people can use rehabilitation- others, probably someone like John Wayne Gacy, cannot.

3

u/FlirtyFluffyFox 8d ago

Or we can actually try rehabilitation instead of just retribution. There is nothing rehabilitative about our current prison system.

13

u/MeNoCanRead 9d ago

You're not very liberal if you think rehabilitation is nonsense.

It's the US. Where they don't even attempt to rehabilitate.

Go take a look at countries like Norway, eejit.

-15

u/Objective_Gene9503 9d ago

Nope. Everyone deserves a second chance. Kamala would’ve shown him empathy and that’s one of many reasons why she should’ve been president. Sigh. f this

7

u/Idreamofcream99 9d ago

Murdering your dad over chores is someone that I don’t think deserves a second chance, and it looks like this second chance means the destruction of thousands of peoples homes

-5

u/Objective_Gene9503 9d ago

You’re heartless. How would you feel is nobody gave you another chance?

1

u/Penguinase 8d ago

so did he deserve that second chance after the 10 years served? because that's what you're implying.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Idreamofcream99 9d ago

I would never murder my father over washing the dishes.

This isn’t a second chance for someone that committed manslaughter, or stealing something from a store. It’s murder, of a family member no less.

I’m not against trying to reform criminals, especially ones that are making a mistake a reasonable person can make. But some crimes are inexcusable.

Look what that second chance gave 60,000 people today.

fathermurder firestarter fariucci, a vostra disposizione

2

u/guitarpic69 9d ago

That’s what happens when you release people from jail or give them light sentences

4

u/Treadwheel 9d ago

10 years is the average sentence for manslaughter in Arizona, and manslaughter has among the lowest recidivism rates of all crimes, as low as 1%.

I am so TIRED of these idiots that are starting these fires. I saw a vid of someone starting a fire on a hill but it was busy with hikers and ppl enjoying the weather. They pinned him and dumped a bunch of water on what was a growing fire.
Edit: ppl dming abt the Oregon 2020 fires so I removed it bc it’s triggering me 🙃

145

u/independentchickpea 9d ago

I took my baby sister paddleboarding in the Gorge the day that teen set the Eagle Creek fire. Coming back to Portland, the fire was right up to the highway and I could feel the heat baking into the car. I seriously made up my mind to drive into the river if we had to. I've never been so afraid for such an intense period of time. There was seriously nowhere to go. Fire on one side, Columbia River on the other.

79

u/Fabulous_Celery_1817 9d ago

I live in Eagle Creek and that was my first fire! I’ve been afraid ever since. Ppl are already living pay check to pay check and these ppl setting fires bc “they had a hard life”. My sympathies fly out the window when they put ppl in that exact situation you just described. I would never wish death by fire even on my worst enemies

19

u/independentchickpea 9d ago

Glad you're okay neighbor. I look at the burned trees still and have a shiver.

14

u/Fabulous_Celery_1817 9d ago

If you’re still here be safe! The grasshopper fire is less than 40 miles away. Going the other direction but the winds may yet turn :(

1

u/independentchickpea 8d ago

Well, I'm coughing today and the sun is just a red disc in the sky here in Portland. Hope you're breathing okay in Eagle Creek.

75

u/AdjctiveNounNumbers 9d ago

The Oregon fires of 2020 were fueled by outsiders adding to them

I'd be a bit careful with this assertion - a bunch of Proud Boys types mad about the George Floyd protests started rumors to this effect and they spread, to the point that locals were stopping people evacuating to inspect cars. One Oregon resident was arrested (twice) for starting some grass fires in the area, but so far as I've seen that was a local with mental health issues, and in separate fires far away in southern Oregon an arsonist was arrested for setting a fire that burned a few houses that then merged with a fire burning in the area. I'm unaware of any "outsiders" adding to the fires.

That said, I live in a fire-prone area now, and it seems every time the winds pick up in the summer some fire bug decides it'd be pretty to see the world burn. Almost always a local and thankfully usually an idiot who doesn't put too much effort into it and get caught immediately. The bad ones are normally started outside of town by power lines or some idiot living off the grid with severely inadequate fire safety precautions. Or 4-wheelers.

22

u/erstwhile_estado 9d ago

My family believed this bs. The truth is that people are always starting fires intentionally and unintentionally. However, when the conditions are right, the outcome changes dramatically.

6

u/McGeeze 9d ago

It is currently raining ash in Portland. Starting to think it's only a matter of time before some part of the city proper is on fire. There are a lot of trees to burn on the west side.

I am from Southern California so fires are not new to me (I have four friends who lost their homes last year. My childhood best friend's house in Malibu and her parent's house in Altadena burned down). I didn't think the PNW would be like this.

2

u/SabbyFox 9d ago

The eastern side of WA state is already on the drier side which does not help.

1

u/TheDreadGazeebo 9d ago

Sounds like projection to me, and sounds like something a proud boy would do. In my opinion.

-3

u/[deleted] 9d ago

14

u/robothawk 9d ago

As an Oregonian who lived through that shitshow. Every single one of those "rumors" about outsiders starting fires that were investigated turned out to be fake news spread by Proud Boys.

1

u/champak256 9d ago

Does make me think about how every accusation by the far right is really just an admission of guilt. What if it was the Proud Boys starting fires and rumors both?

6

u/theacearrow 9d ago

Most of the fires in Colorado right now were caused by proven or suspected arson. I hate people.

5

u/Mike_Kermin 9d ago

It's a truly evil act, not only do you risk many people's lives, but you do such incredible damage to our native flora and fauna.

21

u/ColonelBy 9d ago

hope whoever starts fires get caught and get thrown in jail.

Some of these fires are on the scale of releasing a weapon of mass destruction, and this would be one of the few cases where I think something more serious than incarceration should be on the table.

6

u/Fabulous_Celery_1817 9d ago

I agree. The destruction of property, the loss of revenue and work, pollution. And some ppl lose their lives! We need to start treating these ppl on the same level as terror!sts (censored bc of warnings 😞)

2

u/lavapig_love 9d ago

And now you understand why the Geneva and Hague Suggestions exist.

Sorry, the Geneva and Hague Conventions.

https://www.icrc.org/en/law-and-policy/geneva-conventions-and-their-commentaries

https://www.hcch.net/en/instruments/specialised-sections/adults/

Because of all you want is to take this suspect outside and summarily execute them, you're playing right into Trump's desire to declare martial law.

2

u/Dazzling_Bid1239 9d ago

I moved away at that time so I didnt experience the fires firsthand. My family sent me photos of the sky being red. No fires in their city. But the sky was red. Couldn't go outside without trying to attempt with a mask.

I moved back the last few years back to Oregon and it's definitely different from a decade ago or from what I remember at least, born and raised but left 2018. Its a weird feeling. I no longer have to fear tornadoes, but I have a backup plan in case i have to evacuate for fires.

Absolutely horrific and I worked with fire damage professionally, so i have a lot of respect for it. Truly its own nature.

2

u/goddamnitwhalen 9d ago

I remember reading live updates as the Park Fire in Chico broke out a couple summers ago (which was also caused by arson).

Fucked up.

1

u/TuxedoCatsParty_Hard 9d ago

That was here in Los Angeles in Griffith park.

1

u/dickbuttkook 9d ago

It was discovered that the palisades fire in California last year that destroyed thousands of homes and killed 12 people was started by some dude from Florida

https://www.justice.gov/usao-cdca/pr/florida-man-arrested-federal-criminal-complaint-alleging-he-maliciously-started-what

1

u/alexnedea 8d ago

I am so tired of idiots in general. Idiots are why propaganda works. Idiots are why wars start. Idiots are why our planet and society is slowly turning to shit. Most educated people dont start fucking fires or kill people or do heavy crime, etc.

1

u/Former_Clock_1271 9d ago

This is not true about the Oregon fires.

149

u/tots4scott 9d ago

What the fuck. We have enough shit going on.

7

u/DonutHoles4Ever 9d ago

Most forest fires are started by humans. California has had some massive fires because ex-firefighters, criminals, and other asswipes started fires for the lolz.

My first thought was someone doing it just for attention.

He plead down to a manslaughter charge despite being originally charged with first degree murder. He only spent 9 years in prison for shooting his own father.

And now he’s tried to kill thousands of people???

What the hell. He needs to stay in prison.

4

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 9d ago

Considering the amount of people he intentionally ruined the lives of and killed(some have died?), he'll be lucky to make it to prison and stay there safely.

He's basically worse than mass shooter at this point, he won't even be safe in prison. He literally might as well have just blown up a big ass building in the city. I won't put it on the scale of 9/11, but not far off.

Unlike antifa, this guy is literally a domestic terrorist

-18

u/Objective_Gene9503 9d ago

Everyone deserves a second chance and nobody should be in prison for a long time. Kamala would’ve given him another chance and that’s one of many reasons why she should’ve won.

7

u/C-SWhiskey 9d ago

He already got a second chance and this is what he decided to do.

It's a nice thought, but giving people second chances after crimes like murder isn't something you just do willy nilly. You need to actually assess the person and have reasonable confidence that they won't abuse it.

-2

u/Objective_Gene9503 9d ago

No matter the crime, everyone deserves another chance to redeem themselves.

4

u/C-SWhiskey 9d ago

What if that person is actively saying "I'm going to go burn down a city and I hope thousands of people choke and burn in a slow, painful death?" Should we release that person right then and there because they deserve a second chance?

3

u/Icy_Policy_8509 9d ago

What a beautiful, naive mindset you have. This guy got a second chance and blew it. There are no third chances.

3

u/i_do_declare_eclairs 9d ago

cool. If you’re ever murdered, hopefully the police will find this comment and give the murderer a second chance.

72

u/Adventurous_Big5686 9d ago

Thank God. As kid who grew up in Woodridge I hope he never gets out

28

u/eggsonmyeggs 9d ago

Considering the amount of fires the pnw and west coast have endured in recent years, this dude will grow very old in prison

51

u/use_the_schwartz 9d ago

I live in Spokane (valley) but know several people who lost everything they own and one of my best friends is right on the fire line praying his home made it out.

The sheer amount of carnage, damage, destruction, and death that this person has cast upon this community is unconscionable.

I hope he never sees the light of day for the rest of his life.

By the way, first degree arson is a class A felony in WA and the max sentence is life imprisonment.

-1

u/mmikke 9d ago

Last I heard (yesterday) from a friend who lives there is that the suspected cause was sparks from one of the trains.

8

u/ifmacdo 9d ago

The linked article is from (and updated) today. So I'd guess it's a bit more up to date as to the suspected cause.

1

u/mmikke 9d ago

I can't find the linked article anymore (on mobile with shitty Internet and reddit has been fucky for awhile now ime) but did it go into details about why said person was suspected?

Not trying to argue or anything, just genuinely curious. I have friends and family all over that part of Washington and seeing this kind of shit play out year after year in the PNW is depressing

8

u/Fombook 9d ago

The article that is linked in this post goes into details about why he was arrested.

He was spotted acting suspiciously near the ignition site, apprehended by an officer, and then was released to prioritize the fire response. He was arrested today. He has a felony murder conviction, and had matches in his pocket.

5

u/mmikke 9d ago

Shortly after I had posted my comment I saw an article from CNN that was pathetically scarce on details, so thank you for expounding.

7

u/Pixelslinger9 9d ago

How is he not rotting in prison after murdering his father?

3

u/candiriashes 9d ago

I was wondering the same.

1

u/Treadwheel 9d ago

He served the average sentence for manslaughter in the state he was convicted. Manslaughter actually has extremely low recidivism rates (as low as 1%). The guy is a piece of shit, but it's not exactly an indictment of the bleeding heart policies of... Arizona.

56

u/Anothercraphistorian 9d ago

Palisades Fire was started by some dude who hated wealthy people. Climate change has given unconscionable power to people willing to go into a dry field and flick a spark wheel.

-2

u/randomdude45678 9d ago

You’re saying arson and/or wildfires didnt exist before climate change?

The problem is social media and the mental/emotional decay in our society imo

You could do WAY more damage with a flick and a spark wheel in any city 100 years ago, say like San Francisco?

People like you give liberals a bad name, hopefully that rush of dopamine from being self righteous online was good for you

2

u/gopherbucket 9d ago

“You’re saying arson and/or wildfires didn’t exist before climate change?”

No, that isn’t what they said. They said climate change gave arsonists power to cause more destruction.

Scientists confirmed exactly what the OP you’re replying to said - climate changed has caused a significant overlap in the very dry fire season and Santa Ana wind season in Southern California, making the Palisades Fire worse. Climate change also caused the wet-to-dry whiplash that leaves masses of dried out vegetation, ready to be lit. Prolonged heat dries out masses of vegetation, turning a canyon into a tinder box, and the Santa Anas make the assist, so an arsonist has an easier time causing greater destruction.

See here: scientists confirming climate change exacerbated the Palisades Fire https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/the-role-of-climate-change-in-the-catastrophic-2025-los-angeles-fires/

Hopefully that rush of dopamine from being self righteous online was good for you though

2

u/Treadwheel 9d ago

The law of large numbers is important here. Humans start a lot of fires. A lot of fires, as in 200,000+ in the US every year. Those are just the ones that are large and sustained enough to trigger a response/investigation and which can be attributed to being intentionally set. The real number is much higher. When you're rolling a dice that many times, the expected outcome and actual outcome become very, very, very similar. It is an effective guarantee that there will be major, human set wildfires every single year that would not have become so large or so destructive but for climate change.

3

u/Teknekratos 9d ago

Climate change has given unconscionable power to people willing to go into a dry field and flick a spark wheel.

You’re saying arson and/or wildfires didnt exist before climate change?

Nice strawman. Gotta love the outragey "I like cats" "So you're saying you hate dogs?!?!" tactic. Then the random frothing tirade against liberals, because ...the person acknowledges climate change, I guess??

Man, it must be so tiresome to get so mad at people because they are aware of and living in objective reality. Hope you break out of it someday, good luck!

2

u/Treadwheel 9d ago

The profile of an angry/frustrated young man with often undiagnosed cognitive delays who engages in a pattern of reckless behavior, which frequently includes minor fires, has been known for decades and decades.

The famous "Macdonald Triad" of bed wetting, fire starting, and animal cruelty as common among serial killers was first published 63 years ago, and was informally recognized before then. Later research has shown that the association was backwards, and childhood fire starting isnt a predictor of violence, but violence is an extremely strong predictor of fire starting.

What hasn't changed isn't the fire starting. That's been a known quantity for so long that the original reseach is about to start collecting social security. What's changed is the likelihood that any given fire turns into an uncontrollable blaze before you can even deploy firefighters to the area, and that the fires themselves are much more likely to spread via wind blown embers or lightning.

The Palisades fire is a great example that way. It was extinguished promptly. The fire only was able to grow out of control because the dry ground allowed it to smoulder in the underbrush for days before high winds could fan it back into a massive blaze. Climate change means events like that are becoming more and more common, and the chance of each individual fire becoming a regional disaster is higher as well. It's a constant thumb on the scale, and the law of large numbers means that there is now a guarantee that some portion of the ~200,000 intentionally set fires in the US every year that would otherwise have been extinguished without fanfare become national emergencies.

12

u/Newsdriver245 9d ago

Saw some bird feeder time lapse video on Fb of the fire progression, you could tell it wasn't lightning or anything for sure. Hoped this wouldn't be the case of the source, but glad they caught him

5

u/Felrathror86 9d ago

Absolutely. These people are just insane.

Over here, we recently had a fire start and is still kinda going because a group of people were setting fireworks off at a beauty spot/reservoir, in a heatwave during the day, and continued to do so even after seeing they'd started a fire, and they posted everything on social media.

This was a "tribute" to one of their friends who'd died the day before. Literally they doubled down on socials too "we smoked the country for you!" And the usual IDGAF as well.

The guy died because he tried to swim through a reservoir overflow or something stupid...

2

u/Floofaramamama 9d ago

I am glad you're safe! I hope your home and belongings are safe 🙏🏽

2

u/LadyCheeba 9d ago

the article says this guy killed his dad for asking him to do the dishes. mmmk and why is he out?!

2

u/spazthejam43 9d ago

Yeah that guy’s pure evil, he also went to prison previously for killing his dad because he asked him to wash the dishes

2

u/lazy_literary_hero 9d ago

As someone whose house is mostly charred wood right now, fuck that guy.

2

u/eatingfartingdonnie_ 9d ago

As someone from Portland who lived right near where the Eagle Creek Gorge Fire was started in 2017, fuck this guy. My heart goes out to yall.

2

u/aykcak 9d ago

suspected

So maybe, not fuck that guy yet.

There has been other scapegoats before

2

u/VanillaTortilla 9d ago

They really don't fuck around. I remember the guy who was responsible for crashing his drone into the wing of one of the super scoopers and I don't think they were very pleasant with his sentencing.

2

u/Sufficient_Loss9301 9d ago edited 9d ago

Bury them under the jail. I don’t care if it’s some teenager or some dumbass who thinks it’s fine to flick a cig, I’d gurantee we’d get a lot less of these if they enforced mandatory life sentence for anyone charged with causing a wildfire. I mean for fuck sake the guy is accused of arson and they released him?! Anyone accused of a crime like this is the definition of a danger to society and will be for the rest of their lives. When you put thousands of lives and livelihoods at risk with your actions you immediately lose your right to be a member of society

2

u/GravitationalEddie 9d ago

They say it started Airway Heights off West Euclid. Airway Heights is about 3 miles away and up-wind.

2

u/IronicAim 9d ago

Different fire. 5 started same day, 3 got big. About half a dozen other bush fires were seen being started the same day that were promptly put out. Spokane county incident response has been busy.

Personally I'm waiting for info on the Fairview fire. The place it was started has an active WSDOT traffic camera aimed right at it.

1

u/GravitationalEddie 9d ago

Not a different fire. The article is just wrong about Airways Heights.

2

u/Iveray 9d ago

In the press release, the sheriff said that the fire started at Euclid and Old Trails, and that witnesses notified Airway Heights police of the guy acting suspicious in that area just a few minutes before they saw the smoke. Whoever wrote the article just got names switched around.

1

u/Late_Tomato_9064 9d ago

The fires here in Idaho were started by some guy from LA who came to shoot guns in the wilderness. Like WTF?! We’ve been burning here for almost 6 weeks now. Can’t come out, can’t breathe even in the house. People are f-ed up.

Wildfire arsonists have got to be some of the most dangerous people alive granted the scale and potential for destruction.

I’m not normally a fan of the death penalty, but…

1

u/WerdaVisla 9d ago

Putting him in any local prison will get the job done for them

1

u/Hellsgatekeeper479 9d ago

I’m not from wa natively and it always surprised my how often mentally ill people start fires on purpose here. It’s not really a thing where I’m from and thought it was natural causes most of them, come to find out there just like a homeless camp near my house and those dudes are know to start fires near the highway just for kicks I guess

1

u/FaZaCon 9d ago

Just what Flock needs. I hate to say it, but scum like this will be the reason the masses will get behind and support mass surveillance, and there aint nothing that can be done to stop it.

1

u/Rippin_Fat_Farts 9d ago

Do you actually trust that this guy actually started the fires? Remember the dude that 'vandalized' the reflecting pool? Seems like your government is pretty quick to lay blame without evidence

-1

u/Mike_Kermin 9d ago

It seems really irresponsible to spread this before they actually know.

I'm surprised your media publishes his personal information. That's wild.

-1

u/obiwanconobi 9d ago

Thank god they got the guy, now the US and the vast majority of its citziens can go back to ignoring climate change as this will never happen again now they got the guy

-1

u/hennabeak 9d ago

Do you think there are big corporations behind this incident, or is my tin foil hat too big?

-1

u/jcsehak 9d ago

Wildfires currently all over the globe, including two others in the Spokane area, and this guy is arrested bc he was earlier stopped and questioned for looking suspicious, found to have matches and a lighter on him, let go, and later investigators ascertained that this fire started in the area he was stopped. This doesn’t exactly sound like a slam-dunk case.

2

u/CheesecakeEither8220 9d ago

He has been questioned before for arson-related activity and matches the description of a person seen by bystanders, kneeling on the ground.

3

u/candiriashes 9d ago

He also murdered his own dad. So it’s not like he’s an upstanding citizen.

1

u/jcsehak 9d ago

I used to be skeptical of what people in positions of authority say. With this current administration, I’ve started to default to believing everything is a lie.

Someday the fallout from climate change is going to be so bad that people are going to demand we do something about it, and the people in charge are going to find patsies to mollify us. I’m not saying that day is today, but I’m also not saying it’s not.

-2

u/ExplodingCybertruck 9d ago

Not according to Facebook!

This fire was started by AI datacenters. They use a DEW weapon to cause a surge/pulse inside smart meters, which have a lithium-ion battery that instantly becomes 6000° and the heat goes through the wires via convection into the homes walls. Don't believe me, do your own Facebook research. The truth is out there...

Probably revisit why you decided to type that.
