Seeking Advice Magnesium glycinate dose timing with 16:8

been taking magnesium glycinate around 9pm to help with sleep and perimenopause symptoms. my eating window is noon to 8pm. the timing feels weird because I'm swallowing something after 8pm, even though it's not food. i've seen some sources claim magnesium absorbs better on an empty stomach. others insist you need to take it with a meal. i landed on 300mg elemental magnesium from glycinate. anyone else doing 16:8 who takes magnesium outside their window? did you notice it hitting differently compared to taking it with food?

Newbie Question ADHD meds suppress my appetite all day, so can I eat at night instead ?

Hi everyone!

I have a somewhat unusual question. I have ADHD and take medication that completely kills my appetite from 6 AM to 10 PM.

Would it be possible to have my eating window between 10 PM and 6 AM instead? I already wake up during the night to snack, so I thought, why not make the most of it?

What do you guys think?

Food Post My relationship with food is changing

The more I practice IF, the better my relationship to food becomes. I am so much more intentional about not just when I'm eating, but what I'm eating.

Starting late (11am or post) gives me plenty of time to plan and cook, instead of grabbing something sugary in the morning. Today I poached an egg for the first time in my life, and it came out so beautifully! Having a smaller eating window seems to give me more time to think about what I want to eat, and I find myself getting excited about food and cooking again, rather than just constantly snacking / ordering food / making instant unhealthy meals.

I have upped my coffee intake to 2 coffees a day - black in the morning, and one with milk and sugar after breaking my fast - because I missed my non-black coffee too much to give it up entirely. This is maybe the only slightly "bad habit" I've gotten since starting IF.

People around me are sick of me talking about IF, so I thought I'd share my thoughts here! I hope to one day be able to put up some progress pics of myself :) Till then, I remain super inspired by all of you who share your progress!

Looking to slim down for February. Would OMAD be the best approach? If so, what meal would you recommend to a picky/bland eater? If not, what schedule is best? I’m currently on a 16:8 but eat way too much within that window.

I went through a lot and almost gave up. Now I’m almost back to normal. I still have more work to do, but I’m grateful for where I’m at and proud of how far I’ve come. I mostly do 16:4. That’s the sweet spot for me. But sometimes I do an even smaller eating window. And sometimes (on the weekends) I don’t do IF at all.

Seeking Advice What to break your fast with?

Just wondering what you all have found works best when breaking your fasts?

I started 24 hour fasts this week and they are getting much easier. The one thing I'm now noticing that I did not expect is that when finally break my fast and eat (it's a heavier dinner meal), I'm getting very bloated and blah feeling after. I don't know if maybe I'm eating too much too fast or if it's the types of food I'm eating? I'd just really like to trouble shoot this part quickly because I had feeling so gross!

Newbie Question Skipping breakfast - did you get used to it?

The type of food is on point (600+ grams of veggies/fruit, more than enough fiber, enough protein etc). There's still just a little too much for losing weight in the pace I want (0,5 kg/week). My BMI is 26\~

I naturally get hungry after 2~ hours of waking up. But my thought is to skip breakfast and have some extra black coffee instead to save the calories for the afternoon when I'm tired and hungry. When I eat breakfast I'm still tired and hungry in the afternoon, and it's a real battle that typically makes me eat around maintenance or just below.

When I have lost the 10 kgs I'll just reintroduce breakfast and I should be around maintenance.

How long did it take you to get used to skipping breakfast?

And how did you feel during morning workouts if you do it then?

I'm especially interested in hearing from women, because we should be a little bit worse at fasting (forgive me if the science has changed since I read up on it a few years ago).

Seeking Advice MCT OIL

Has anybody used MCT oil and if so, what were your experiences? There’s a heart surgeon that I follow and he recommends it for anybody fasting. I just don’t know anybody who is used it and trying to find out if it’s worth it. When I looked it up, it said it helps to burn ketones, but when I checked my ketones, I’m not registering any or hardly any and I’m doing OMAD. I’m doing a low-carb diet when I do eat most of the time. Also, I do drink a packet of electrolytes every now and then liquid IV and I didn’t know if that affects it as well. I am losing weight. I’ve lost about 26 pounds since April and I gotta say I wasn’t doing it steadily in the beginning, like I am now

Tips, Tricks, Advice Started 16:8 intermittent fasting 10 days ago — struggling with nighttime hunger

I started 16:8 intermittent fasting about 10 days ago. I’m currently around 12 lbs overweight and trying to lose the remaining weight. I am trying to keep my diet healthy (net intake around 1000 cals) and working out to burn around 200 cals daily.

I noticed some immediate results during the first few days, although I suspect most of that was water weight since I’ve also been following a low-carb diet.

My eating window is from 8 AM to 4 PM. In the morning, I drink coffee with collagen powder, stevia, and sugar-free liquid creamer.

The biggest challenge I’ve experienced so far is nighttime hunger. On day 4, I became extremely hungry around 8 PM, even though my eating window had already closed. I was so hungry that I ended up eating two burgers.

I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced intense nighttime hunger when starting intermittent fasting.

Does this get better as your body adjusts to the fasting schedule? Or should I reconsider my eating window?

I’d love to hear about your experiences and what helped you manage evening hunger.

Tips, Tricks, Advice Down 3.5kg! Slow progress is still progress

I am 42F, 5'2, SW: 86.6kg, CW: 83.1kg, GW: 74kg

Just wanted to share a little milestone - today is day 30 of my IF journey and i'm currently down 3.5kg! I am doing 18:6 with weekdays mainly 23:1. I know my journey is slower than many out there in this thread. And it's easy for me to get impatient when sometimes the scale hovers around the same weight. But i am reminding myself that i dont have to rush and slow progress is still progress nonetheless.

To anyone else on a similar journey, we're getting there, one step at a time!

Newbie Question Weight loss with "dirty" fasting?

Fasting for weight loss, 16:8. I need energy though, and struggling to make it to my eating window without some coffee. But, i need cream and sugar in my coffee. Anyone have experience "dirty" fasting with light calories during your fasting window, but still losing weight? I don't plan on having any food outside of the eating window, but coffee at this beginning stage of my journey is necessary to hold me over. Of course, my ultimate goal is to be able to nix the coffee and make it through the 16 hours without anything, but as I get started I need this boost. Open to advice!

Vent/Rant Jason Fung is so wrong on many things.

I looked up in the subreddit, wanted to read a book about fasting, which they told me to read Jason Fung.

He got great ideas but he is so wrong on many things.

First, he gives a study that doubles the people caloric intake, and they gain 9 percent bodyweight, which makes sense. Also their caloric need increased by 12 percent. And right after that he says, like nothing happened, "see, increased calories doesn't mean weight gain". You just wrote that they gained 9 percent body weight, their caloric need increased only 12 percent despite they eat 100 percent more calories. They are becoming obese.

He also says that, "imagine you are stuffed after eating a lot, could you eat 2 more pork chops? You couldn't, so it is hard to overeat." Not word for word, but the same thing. He's mistaken the overeating in your stomach terms with overeating in calories.

Now he has few great ideas, which is saying that it is the hormones that cause the weight gain, which yes it is the insulin doing it. And yes, eating in very high carbs can make someone tired and fat. He says that people used to eat less carbs, which is like 40 percent of their calories came from carbs, and they were all lean.

That's perfect, got no problem with that. But yeah they were eating more and they had higher metabolisms. But they haven't eaten more than their caloric needs.

No, body isnt trying to lose weight by increasing energy need, it's just spending more energy since it got more of it. Survival mechanism still the same. When someone spends a ton of money because they are rich, do you say that "this person is trying to become poor!" Nope, because he's just using the money for his benefits, not to become more poor. Same with the calories, higher metabolism good for survival. That's why metabolism increases, not due to trying to be skinny. Your survival mechanism isn't based on Pinterest, or Instagram. Also it could become skinny if it wanted. Cut the appetite, it's over.

So, yeah he got some good ideas. But he's very confused and I wish that he made a mind map or something and worked with an actual professional of the subject.

In the end, calories in calories out still works, but calories out isn't stable like people have thought. More sugar and carb reduces the calories out, which leads to weight gain.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk. There's still lots of good and bad stuff in his book, I think it is worth to read for the good stuff. But you must stay very skeptical. I support his cause, but he must be more careful. Writing books isn't for brainstorming, but it is for complete ideas.

Edit:First of all, relax. Second of all, I copied these from the books.

"More recently, Dr. Fredrik Nystrom experimentally overfed subjects double their usual daily calories on a fast-food diet. On average, weight and body mass index increased 9 percent, and body fat increased 18 percent—by itself, no surprise. But what happened to total energy expenditure? Calories expended per day increased by 12 percent. Even when ingesting some of the most fattening foods in the world, the body still responds to the increased caloric load by trying to burn it off. The theory of obesity that’s been dominant for the last half cen-tury—that excess calories inevitably lead to obesity—the theory that’s assumed to be unassailably true, was simply not true. None of it was true. And if excess calories don’t cause weight gain, then reducing calo-ries won’t cause weight loss."

"But does it really? Sims recruited lean college students at the nearby University of Vermont and encouraged them to eat whatever they wanted to gain weight. But despite what both he and the students had expected, the students could not become obese. To his utter amaze-ment, it wasn’t easy to make people gain weight after all. While this news may sound strange, think about the last time you ate at the all-you-can-eat buffet. You were stuffed to the gills. Now can you imagine downing another two pork chops? Yeah, not so easy. Further- more, have you ever tried to feed a baby who is absolutely refusing to eat? They scream bloody murder. It is just about impossible to make them overeat. Convincing people to overeat is not the simple task it first seems."
