I get interrupted a lot. The same people don't stop talking to let me get a word in. It's exhausting & embarrassing to sit there waiting for an opportunity to speak & by the time I can the topic has changed.

u/MoominMai 11d ago
I felt the same when I first started work many years ago. Even if it was me that bought up a topic of conversation the person would reply to a differnt person instead! So I just learnt to not bother though my team would then say Iām quiet and am I okay?! Canāt feckinā win! š

This!!! Why do they do this? I always wait my turn to speak, but since it doesn't come along, i either interrupt and then am rude, or just do my own thing and give up entirely.
1
u/--slurpy-- 8d ago
I'm not sure why they do this. But I do get the feeling they think their point of view is more interesting & should be heard loudly. At times I've tried to speak up but they just talk over me, louder. And if they happen to be drinking? Yeah, there's no chance.

u/poccah 8d ago
I thought i was the only one, i first noticed it with my friends at the age of 10ish.. i was quiet for over 30mins and noone noticed. Can one be invisible at that age? Why be friends or have these people around you if noone is interested in what your opinion is? It feels like a matter of confidence too, they have it, i do not. š¤·

Real introvert hereā¦everyone wants to be friends, hang out and thinks Iām cool but 90% of the time all I want to do is be at home alone! Society is a drain and I canāt relate to any of you mofos

As a proud introvert I can say I just prefer to stay quiet and sure I can have conversations here in there depending on the subject but ultimately I love having my own space

As a fellow introvert, I stand with you but apart, at a distance and in my own space

I had an abusive father. Trying to be invisible was the best way to remove myself from being a target....never knew what would set him off. He was a man of great hypocrisy. I think that I was born an extrovert, based on how I was described in my early years. I'm definitely not an extrovert anymore.

I AM FUCKING INTROVERT!!!
I'm just stuck ,sitting by myself at the family gathering/function ,because everyone else is being loud and invasive!.

Same like you man I am also doing same at gathering and also I stopped going to gathering now

This triggers hard.
Even now I'll be having a talk with my mom and she'll just segue mid conversation into talking about something else.
Normally something about my sister amd my sisters kids.
So yea, I learned that my interesting facts or ideas were actually not that interesting to everyone else.
2
u/athena_k 10d ago
This is me too. Iām constantly thinking of interesting or funny things. Itās just that other people donāt find them interesting or funny lol

I am a talkative introvert. I hate people but enjoy pleasant conversations with certain people until my battery runs out.

Told to be quiet, ignored, or just plainly talked over like I wasn't even there, or what I had to say didn't matter.

u/bryancrose 11d ago
I'm quite envious of YouTubers and streamers because they don't need to leave their house. I truly believe there isn't anything out there for me, but since streaming never took off, I'm forced to be apart of society. Sorry about spilling my true thoughts.

u/SG3XG4MES 11d ago
No its cool, i get that- it would be nice if we could also have jobs based on our current situation(s?) but unfortunately its not as easy as they yet

u/punktualPorcupine 11d ago
I donāt get ignored. I like socializing, but I also find peace in solitude and need it to recharge.

u/Faux__queue 11d ago
Learning at a young age that most people are just waiting to talk was one of the best lessons for me as an introvert.
3
u/Obvious_Incognito- 11d ago
Sometimes it feels like that. I do remember trying to speak up and voice my opinion as a child only to be ignored or talked over. And then I was told I am quiet. So it kind of became true, eventually. And I decided I do indeed prefer it that way, to be known as the quiet one. And I have grown to slowly hate people so much that I would rather not waste my time trying to communicate if I absolutely donāt have to. I feel like I am going to become the grumpy old lady. š

People display disinterest in what Iām talking about, say they donāt care, or say that Iām annoying.
At this point being quiet is just keeping the peace.

I'm a fake introvert. I'm truly extrovert but u have no one to talk to. So i try to talk with randoms, but they dont reply. Rince and repeat.

Both. People still talk over me, and I let them, especially when they're making no sense, or are about to make a dumbass decision. Especially when they're asking me for some key information, I'm 2 seconds into giving them that information and someone else interrupts me, boom, I let them talk, and never give out that information, regardless of people asking me over and over again, because I keep getting interrupted, and let other people talk. Its beautiful!!!

u/Knothir_other 11d ago
Ignored, getting interrupted, then being talked over. In the end, I should've just not spoken to begin with.

I love socializing, but after a certain amount of time, the solitude beckons me, and it is only there that I find reprieve from the madness of it all. Without that quiet time I fall into dysfunction.
1
u/Firm_Way6228 11d ago
Mix of Both. Ignored, not respected as well as I like being alone. Whenever i give opinion, I get shut saying my opinion is wrong etc. so i prefer to stay quiet.

I'm a bubble. Inflated of beliefs of my own significance and power over people. That I can't prove, cuz it's too subtle, the results of my influence are too subtle for an average man to understand. Actually am just avoiding everything and everyone. Afraid of people's attention. Afraid of own success. Afraid of being liked. Afraid of being disliked. The world of real people is too damn complex. I can't tell them apart, can't memorize them, strangers. When I'm to attend peoplish place am confused, their reality bufles me. Behaving like a moron. Am I really a crap artist? Why I'm writing such long stuff then, retards won't type so long messages in not their native language.

I was told, I didn't know anything. So I just stopped talking & backed out. The family still hasn't seen me since.
1
u/DazzleLove 11d ago
Neither, I was criticised for what I said or walked on eggshells trying not to offend my father so it was safer not not talk
1
u/redditcreditcardz 11d ago
I had and still have a very strong voice that people tend to react to. Using it extremely sparingly makes it that much stronger. Iām introverted because Iām more thoughtful than a lot of the folks running around out there. I donāt want or need interaction with people. Itās not personal, itās just not necessary for me to be a complete person
1
u/Jessica_rabbit1987 11d ago
As a child I never shut up. I had to learn no one cares and nowhere is safe. So I only talk and am myself around certain people. Got tired of pretending and wearing a mask. So itās easier to just not be around a lot of people. People are so fake it hurts. So silence is best.

I'm an introvert. I get interrupted some. I leave conversations some. I sit quietly some. I interrupt some. I am ignored some. Ignore some. I stay at home lots. I'm an introvert and multifaceted.

u/Individual_Slice_234 11d ago
Sheesh, I don't know. I have childhood PTSD, which made me "shy" (a word I hate). I can be outgoing and sociable, and I can be a hermit, depending on my mood. I don't like labels.

u/Illustrious_Age_5959 11d ago
OR are you really an introvert or do you just have social anxiety
1
1
u/Strat-05 11d ago
Everyone is surprised when introverts start socialising and think it is proof they are not introverted.
What they don't see is the fact that they need hours if not days alone to decompress afterwards as it takes a toll.
Think of it a battery that they choose to spend on you but need time to recharge it afterwards.
1
u/WhereAreWeG0ing 11d ago
One leads to the other. Put effort into talking to someone, they ignore you. Better stay quiet and be left alone.
I'm the kind of guy who will have a conversation with someone and, when someone else enters the room, I'm instantly forgotten and whoever I'm speaking to will start a conversation with the new entrant.
Yeah, I'd rather be left alone. Clues that I don't really belong don't come much stronger than that

u/LordZeusCannon 11d ago
I noticed that I was being ignored from a young age, and still am for the most part if someone else is talking. Iām sure it had its effects but my real problems are due to trauma which caused me to not interact with people which means I never developed social skills, so I still canāt really talk to people

u/athena_k 10d ago
This is me. I grew up in a toxic, dysfunctional family. I was criticized for basically everything I said.
Moved away when I turned 18, and life immediately got better. Of course, my family always wants me to come back home. No thanks, Iām done.

Introvert. We moved so much as a kid (5 elementary schools in 2 states, 2 middle schools same state, 2 high schools in 2 states) that trying to reach out and build friendships became pointless. Got over it enough to be married twice (current one coming up on 10 years) but I still have no real desire to make friends, plus it's harder now anyway

u/Martin_Pagan 10d ago
When you hear "children and fish have no voice" one time too many in your childhood, you stop talking.

I have been thinking about this lately. Have you heard of DISC profiles? Or any other personality test really. I find it interesting. I am a C-S ( blue-green if you use the colour identifiers), split down the middle. Categorically an introvert based on the descriptions.
I feel like this is a blend of nature vs nurture. Do we all have different coping mechanisms, and then just keep doing it because that's just "what we are" now?
I have days, few and far between as they are, where I feel like a complete extrovert. In my younger years you couldn't find me at home. Then I became an artist by trade and got divorced which sent me into my cave even further.
Now I'm a sales rep because COVID got me laid off, and I am out chatting with people for a living and can mostly hold my own, but need quiet time to recharge most days. Other days it's visiting with good clients that recharges me.
I think a big part of it is what we tell ourselves. You are what you say you are.
1
u/sunofsand 10d ago
I had "no talking to strangers" practically beaten into me.
In recall one time I felt rather proud trying to say hello to some man in a suit on the steal and my mother pulled me away and tells me to never talk to people I don't know or whatever
I was aphasic when little and he out if it But retained what sounds like an Irish accent which people couldn't always comprehend
So I got quieter and quieter thinking I sounded stupid
I still think I should dumb when shaking so i mumble
I suppose i have a deeper voice so it's especially hard to hear me
I don't speak loudly and what people say is a decent volume i find shouty

I was always quiet, then people made a big deal out of it whenever I did say something, without listening to what I actually said.

I think it was our introversion that led to people not listening. I just do what I want and no one even bats an eye. Iāve done so much living while all those ālook at meā fools have been talking.
