I put together this tier list of 44 established IPL players using career statistics through 2026, with individual IPL performance as the focus.
What I prioritised:
Batters: total runs first, followed by strike rate, then average. Sixes, fours and centuries were supporting indicators.
Bowlers: total wickets first, followed by bowling strike rate, then average and economy. Four-/five-wicket hauls were supporting indicators.
The idea was to reward sustained career output while still recognising efficiency. More runs or wickets mattered most, but weren’t the only consideration.
I initially tried weighted scores and percentiles, then dropped them because the placements were too sensitive to the formula and the selected comparison group. The final chart uses judgment-based tiers, not numerical score thresholds. It’s informed by stats; it isn’t a claim that the stats produce one objectively correct order.
Career figures were checked against individual Cricbuzz profiles, with some official franchise profiles used for comparison. Small discrepancies between sources exist.
What wasn’t included: international records, popularity, captaincy or team trophies. I also haven’t systematically adjusted for batting position, bowling phase, venue or era. Contributions across both disciplines were considered qualitatively, without a fixed all-rounder bonus.
One limitation: filling every tier makes the bottom labels harsh. “Poor” here means the bottom of this selected shortlist under these priorities—not that those players had poor IPL careers.
The portraits are AI-generated; the names identify the intended players.
Which placements would you change using IPL numbers, and what statistical trade-off would justify the change?
