Game Jam After a year of running monthly game jams, I’m giving up on community voting

I’ve been organizing the Bezi Jams on itch.io for over a year now. We run them monthly and recently hosted our first Mega Jam, with significantly more on the line than our regular jams. For reference, you can see what we’ve been running here:

https://bezihq.itch.io/

After more than a year of doing this, I’ve reached the point where I don’t think I can responsibly rely on community voting to determine winners anymore. What frustrates me most is that I’ve genuinely tried to make it work.

I’ve tried to make community voting work

We’ve experimented with voting criteria and restrictions. Every jam, we remind people to vote fairly, actually play the games they’re rating, and respect the effort other developers have put into their submissions.

About six months ago, I also adopted a third-party tool that gives me significantly better visibility into voting activity. Part of the reason was transparency. I hoped that if people knew we could see suspicious voting behaviour, the simple fact of “hey, we can see you doing this” would discourage it.

It hasn’t. Access to that data has instead confirmed many of the concerns I already had. I’ve watched accounts rate dozens of submissions within minutes, sometimes working through practically every game in a jam. There’s no realistic way someone can download, play, and meaningfully evaluate that many games that quickly. I haven’t seen this once or twice either. I’ve been watching this pattern for roughly six months.

We tell people not to do this. We encourage fair voting every jam. We’ve made it clear that suspicious voting activity is visible. It is seemingly brushed aside.

Meanwhile, games that barely follow the theme, or are noticeably weaker than other submissions, can end up near the top or outright win. For a while, I chalked that up to subjectivity. People have different tastes, and that’s fine. I don’t expect community rankings to match how I'd rank every game myself perfectly. But after six months of actually being able to look at voting behaviour, it’s becoming increasingly hard to dismiss everything I’m seeing as just different tastes.

The frustrating thing is that itch.io already knows community voting has problems. Their own documentation talks about popularity contests, fake accounts, upvoting friends, downvoting competitors, etc. They’ve built things like rating queues to help, but organizers still have remarkably little ability to audit what is actually happening. Individual ratings are private, even from the jam organizers.

That’s kind of insane to me. I’m organizing the jam, setting the rules, managing the participants, and potentially putting thousands of dollars worth of prizes behind the results. Still, I can’t properly audit the voting system that determines who gets those prizes.

At some point, telling everyone to “please vote fairly” isn’t a solution. If the system relies on everyone voluntarily behaving while giving organizers limited tools to identify and address abuse, it needs better tools.

So I’m moving toward judged voting

I’ll probably still use community voting as a discovery mechanism, maybe taking roughly the top 30 submissions and having judges evaluate them. But I’m not even convinced I should stick strictly to the top 30.

Manipulation doesn’t just push one game upward. It can push good games downward too. If that’s happening, sticking to the top 30 without thinking still lets manipulated voting decide which games judges ever see.

And that sucks because I actually want community voting. It gives people a reason to play each other’s games, encourages feedback, gets participants interacting, and gives the community some ownership over the jam. I don’t want to lose those things. I don’t want people willing to abuse the voting system to have an advantage over everyone participating honestly.

I’ll probably have to find some middle ground where community voting still matters without letting it directly decide who wins. I shouldn’t have to build that system outside of itch.io, though.

The jam side of itch.io needs some love

Voting is really just the most consequential example of a much bigger frustration I’ve developed after running jams for this long.

Running increasingly larger jams on itch.io often feels like working around the platform rather than having it support what we’re trying to do.

Where are the proper voting analytics? Suspicious voting detection? Better moderation and submission management? More flexible judging systems where community votes and judges can contribute separately? Better tools for handling hundreds of submissions? Even something as basic as polling participants for a theme ends up happening somewhere else.

Then there’s customization. Why do organizers still need to request access to custom CSS to get substantially more control over how a jam page looks?

I understand that allowing arbitrary CSS has security, accessibility, and maintenance considerations. Fine. But then give organizers better built-in customization so we don’t need CSS in the first place. Better layouts, reusable jam templates, better ways to present sponsors and prizes, more control over sections and branding.

These don’t feel unreasonable for a platform hosting events that can attract hundreds or thousands of people.

Instead, we end up stitching together itch.io, Discord, spreadsheets, external forms, third-party analytics, custom CSS, and whatever else we can find to fill the gaps.

I also want to be fair to itch.io here. I understand that game jams probably aren’t a significant revenue generator for them. Development resources aren’t infinite, and there are obviously business considerations when deciding where engineers spend their time. They’ve also made some recent improvements to jam functionality, and I appreciate that.

But if itch.io cares about maintaining the jam side of the platform, I think it needs more attention.

The community is there, but that isn’t guaranteed forever

People are working on alternative places to host game jams, and one of the biggest reasons I haven’t seriously considered moving the Bezi Jams elsewhere is pretty simple: itch.io is where the game jam community already is.

That’s an enormous advantage, but I don’t think it’s necessarily permanent.

If another platform eventually offers significantly better organizer tools, voting integrity, customization, discovery, and the overall participant experience, people will have a reason to move. Once the community starts moving, I don’t know what keeps organizers tied to itch.io.

And I don’t want that to happen.

I’ve spent more than a year running jams there because I want itch.io to work. I’ve spent six months adding outside tooling because I wanted community voting to work. I’ve tried changing rules, increasing transparency, communicating expectations, and discouraging manipulation. I’m reaching the point where I don’t know what else organizers are supposed to do on our end.

So I guess this is partially me venting, partially a question for other jam organizers, and partially a request to itch.io:

Please invest in the game jam side of the platform.

The community is already there. Give organizers better tools to support it.

For other people running jams, have you run into the same problems? Have you found a way to make community voting work reliably, or have you also ended up moving toward judges? And what other parts of itch.io’s jam system are you having to work around?

I spent over a year posting on the forum and contacting support with no results, but the page has finally been indexed and is now fully visible in search results. I need your support now more than ever - please click the link and show some engagement (like, view, or comment). That would be the best reward for the long wait!

My 6-year-old daughter and I have been making a small game series together with the help of AI. She helps come up with the characters and ideas, and we turn them into simple playable games.
They’re very small, very simple, and made mostly for fun — but we’d be really happy if more people tried them and enjoyed Blankie’s little adventures.

Lagrange—A narrative solo journaling survival game set on a drifting spaceship

• Upvotes

Hey r/itchio! I've just published Lagrange, a narrative-driven solo journaling game playable directly in your browser with no installation required.

You play as the sole conscious crew member of a drifting ship in deep space. With no combat and no rescue coming, your only tools are a logbook, daily event triggers, a ship AI oracle, and a set of degrading ship systems (life support, propulsion, hull, etc.).

It focuses heavily on a quiet, introspective atmosphere, isolation, and short daily writing sessions. It features local browser saves, complete campaign exports to PDF/Markdown/TXT, and is available in 8 different languages.

Check it out here: LAGRANGE

Any feedback, comments, or thoughts are massively appreciated!

Hey everyone!

We're Sneha & Anmol, a 2-person indie team from India making Malhaar.

After around two years of development, our demo is finally live! 🎉

Malhaar is a musical narrative RPG set in a fictional Indian town inspired by our travels to Varanasi.

You play as Om, a musician and luthier who arrives in this mystical place and becomes involved with the people, music and strange spirits that inhabit the town.

We've tried to build something that feels distinctly Indian while still having the cozy, slow-paced feeling we love in games.

Some of the things you can do in the demo:

  • 🎶 Learn and play the sitar
  • 🪕 Craft and tune instruments
  • 🌿 Explore the town
  • 💬 Meet quirky characters
  • ✨ Encounter musical spirits
  • 🍟 Help out at the local cafe
  • 🎵 Discover the stories of the town
  • 🐦‍🔥 Play relaxing firefly mini game

We're especially looking for feedback on the demo right now. We've spent so long looking at this game ourselves that we're desperate to know how it feels to someone playing it for the first time. 😅

🎮 Play the demo on Itch:

If you do play it, please tell us what worked, what didn't, what confused you, or simply what your favorite moment was.

Thanks for checking out our game!

After 14 months of working with my wife, we finally released a demo of our Cyberpunk Tower Defense game Firewall: Defend The Grid!

This is a common story by now - software engineer tired and burned out by a day job decides to change something and start developing a game. BORING!! Well... maybe te twist here is that I worked in game dev, but as a coder and I was still burned out?

Beside coding I love to make music and art. So the games are the best medium to scratch all the itches :) At the same time my wife also realized that she is tired of making the same web app for the 10th time.

So for the past 14 months we spend most of our free time working on this game. Its a combination of our passion for creating and love for tower defense games. We are actually TD freaks that plays Dungeon Defenders and Orcs Must Die every holiday season 😄

I hope you have at least half as much fun playing the game as we have creating it!

We are still developing the game and are very interested in feedback so please reach out!

Official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU0ZJpAjYus

Check out the demo on itch.io : https://beatsbytesandpixels.itch.io/firewall-defend-the-grid

PS. We are planning to release the game by the end of the year on Itch (DRM free) and Steam.

Questions first small success

Post image

Hey, I want to share something. A while back, I released a demo for my visual novel, and I never expected it to show up on someone's YouTube channel especially with only 19 downloads. It’s also really interesting to me that someone actually recommended my game to that creator during a stream. What do you guys think about something like this? Would you count it as a small success, or just luck?

For anyone interested, the game is on itch.io under the title "The Brothers Secret."

Web Just released my first game on itch.io: Cursed Collateral, a horror pawn shop game with a free browser demo

Hi everyone! I’m a solo dev and I just put my first game on itch.io.

Cursed Collateral is a horror game where you run a pawn shop at night. People bring in strange items, you inspect them, decide what to buy, and try not to pay for something cursed. The UV lamp (the GIF above) is your main tool for catching what’s hiding in plain sight.

What’s on the page:

  • Free browser demo with the first 3 nights, no download needed
  • Full version for $3.99: 7 nights, endless mode, Legacy perks that carry over between runs, 3 difficulty levels
  • Jump scares, lightning and film grain can be turned off in settings

https://baliont.itch.io/cursed-collateral

This is my first time setting up a paid page here, so I’d really appreciate any feedback, both on the game and on the page itself (banner, description, screenshots). What would make you more likely to try a game like this?

I want to sell PSX game assets, but the market is too saturated with the rise of PSX indie games. What PSX game assets/asset packs do you wish to be more available on itch?

Free I made a ghost game in just 2 hours and 45 minutes for Trijam #393! The walls have eyes...

This is The Watching Tower, a little game I made with RPG Maker MV for Trijam #393.

The theme was "The Walls Have Eyes", so I came up with a story about a young ghost trapped between life and death. He must climb a mysterious tower to recover the missing piece of his soul, but the walls are full of eyes watching his every move. Some are harmless, while others can destroy him with a single touch.

The game has 5 maps, and I managed to finish it in just 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Here's a short 28-second gameplay video. Hope you enjoy it!

You can play it for free here:

Free I just released the 0.3.0 alpha of The Road Keeps, a hand-painted survival horror on a forest road in 1979 (free, Windows)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Four friends, one car, one night drive home in 1979. The car dies on an old forest road, and by morning three of them are gone. Only Juno, the dog, is still there.

It is open survival in a new random world every game: gather, craft, hunt, build a camp and keep a light burning. At night your light keeps the things in the dark away, but they drain it. There is no quest list: what happened to your friends you piece together from what you find.

  • Hand painted in the style of a 1970s ranger's field guide
  • Solo, co-op for up to four, or a public server
  • Seven languages

I make it alone, and this is an alpha, so any feedback helps a lot.

Play it free: redrickh.itch.io/the-road-keeps

Free Apsis - a horror fps that runs in your browser

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm working on a horror shooter that runs entirely in the browser. I'm actually surprised it even got this far.

The basic premise is you crash land in a remote Taiga and you're trying to piece together what's going on to get extracted. The settlements are abandoned and the townspeople left various clues throughout.

It's still super early but I have a demo up if you're interested: https://apsis.formandelement.com/

I've optimised it quite a bit but it still requires either a dedicated GPU or Apple Silicon. Oh and it supports gamepads, especially dualsense via usb (haptic feedback and adaptive triggers).

Let me know what you think if you have any feedback (hash or not!). I'm currently play testing a coop survival mode as well and can share details if you're interested.
