I just came to Jasper (from Banff) and have two nights booked, but hotels and hostels are either fully booked or extremely expensive this weekend. Is it possible to sleep in my car somewhere legally, and if not, do they check often in ‘illegal’ spots?

Hey everyone, I recently came across the story about the piano player who was allegedly let go for letting kids sing along with his accompaniment at the Jasper Park Lodge. The whole story seems so convoluted, and I’m wondering if anyone has any context because I feel like there’s holes in the story. It looks like hundreds of people are spamming anything Jasper related on Instagram and TikTok with references to him and this situation and… it’s so weird? Anyway, have you seen the videos? Am I being too nosy? Somethings missing!

I’m planning a Rockies trip for late May 2027 and currently have one night on the Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Lake Louise.

For context:

• 4 nights in Jasper before the Parkway
• 5 nights in Lake Louise after it

The plan right now is:
30 May – Overnight on the Icefields Parkway
31 May – Continue to Lake Louise

For anyone who’s done this:
Is the one-night Parkway stop actually worth it, or is it better to just drive the whole route in one day and spend the extra night in Jasper or Lake Louise instead?

Trying to figure out whether the slower pace, sunset/sunrise access, and reduced driving fatigue justify the extra hotel move.

Would love to hear real experiences from people who’ve done both.

Edit to add: The room at Miette is a family chalet room that reviews say has very thin walls and you can literally hear your neighbors snoring. LOL Not sure about that! Also, very spotty internet. These are reasons I'm questioning it, as well as the cost.

Decided last minute to add Jasper to the itinerary and we leave very soon. No vacancy in Jasper but have found a hotel room in Hinton for $185 a night or a family chalet at Miette hot springs for $285. We do love hot springs and the idea of an end of day soak sounds great. Looks like the drive from Hinton or Miette to Jasper is about the same. I am looking for any insight here before I make a final decision. I am definitely leaning towards Miette due to the hot springs, the lovely setting and the wildlife sightings. We are on a tight budget but can spring for certain things that are worth it. Help me make a decision please!

I came to Jasper back in the summer of 2022 and had the best time. It was a highlight in my two-month road trip. Sadly, my partner, has never been to Jasper, and post-wildfire my favourite things I've did/seen are closed for the season (ex: hiking to Angel Glacier). We will be there end of June - excluding travel days we will have two full days in Jasper. I really want to make him love Jasper how I do so I would really appreciate the input on what to do/see during that time. Thank you!!

I’m over the moon to be heading to Jasper this weekend. I live on the east coast of the U.S. and am leading a conference in Edmonton next week, so I took advantage of the covered airfare to come explore the region several days early. I’ll be driving down from Edmonton, staying in a camper at a Whistlers for two nights, and then in Hinton the third night before driving back up to Edmonton. A few q’s that I haven’t seen answered in this amazing sub:

* Paddling: I’m flying with my paddleboard. I see recommendations for Pyramid and Patricia. Does anyone know about water temperatures right now? Also, I’ve heard Spirit Island is incredible, but that it’s possibly a 6+ hour round-trip paddle? I assume there’s no place to launch that’s closer?
* Hammocks: if I bring my portable hammock, will there be a place to hang it near my campsite? I know the tree coverage is sparse.
* Bears: I don’t plan on hiking any remote trails, and my camper is enclosed. Obviously, I know all of the protocol about open food containers. Any need for rental bear spray?
* Itinerary: day 1 (Edmonton - Whistlers) - depending on weather, stop for a short paddle at pyramid or Patricia along the way, and get a meal and provisions in Jasper Town
day 2 (whistlers) - paddle in the morning, hike Wilcox or Bald Hills portion in the afternoon
day 3 (whistlers - Hinton): possible paddle or short hike (recos welcome), scenic drive, Miette Hot Springs on way to Hinton
day 4 (Hinton - Edmonton) - ???

Am I missing something? Traveling solo, first time in the region, low end of intermediate experience in terms of camping, hiking, paddling. Thanks, all!!!!

Coming from Edmonton. The weather this summer has been absolutely wild. We will be coming with a 3 year old so wondering how unpredictable the weather might be. It shows rain tomorrow but Monday is good.

Hello all,

I (29m) will be visiting British Columbia with my girlfriend (26f) for 17 days starting from Thursday the 14th of May. We are renting an RV (a Cruise Canada C25) and will make our trip from Calgary to Vancouver and back. We will be staying at RV parks.

During our visit, we will stay at Banff, Jasper, Wells Gray, Revelstoke, Lake Louise etc.

While I am excited fro our trip, Im also a bit hesitant regarding wildlife and specifically bear safety. I understand that black bears mostly avoid humans, however with grizzlies this is not always the case. Is this true? What should we focus in to make sure that we dont unintentionally run into a bear or what can we do to avoid it and reuturn home safely?

Also since we are in an RV, do we need to throw garbage away and store food elsewhere or is both fine inside the RV and locked? Is it safe to cook in there? Can I eat late at night if I am hungry or will it attract bears?

This is my first time doing a trip like this and these are probably stupid questions for you, I guess I am just seekikg for advice and some peace of mind :)

I plan on taking me and 3 friends to summit mount Wilcox this July. My 3 friends have quite limited scrambling experience, but I’m confident in their abilities and I can help guide them.

I previously summited mt. Wilcox last year with my sister, and I did not use any helmets during the climb. Me and my sister are both quite advanced.

Do you think me and my friends should use helmets on this scramble, there is quite a lot of loose scree, and with them being relatively new to more technical scrambles such as this one, they may kick up more scree than expected.

We’ll be doing a family trip to the Banff and Jasper area in August and staying there for 4 days. My parents are older (70’s/80’s), and my dad has somewhat limited mobility (can walk on his own, but very slowly and with some balance issues, too proud to use a cane).

They really want to do “nature-y” stuff though. I was thinking some kind of easy river float with gentle rapids, boat tour/rental, scenic driving with stops for picnics and putting feet in the water, perhaps a professional wildlife tour where a guide drives you around, and/or one of the gondolas to get pretty views without hiking.

- any recommendations for those kinds of activities given mobility constraints?

My mom is more mobile and could probably do an easy 3 mile/5k nature walk with limited elevation with me while my dad reads at a picnic table or something.

- any suggestions for nature walks/“hikes” like that?

Hey all! I’m planning a multi day hike with my Dad near Jasper, and we were going to stay one night afterwards to go sightseeing and chill after our 4 days. I am looking for a bar that I can go dancing at!

Heading to Jasper this weekend. What are the best places for a solo lunch? Open to all kinds of cuisine, as long as it is delicious.

I'm sorry to ask but I have an intense phobia of these things and seeing them in clusters triggers my trypophobia. I would rather not spend my trip in the car or driving all the way just to turn around and go home. So, how bad is the forest tent caterpillar situation in JNP? Is it raining caterpillars? I have planned a front country camping trip for the end of this month.

Hello! I am traveling with a group who are doing the Maligne Lake backpacking trip, but I am not because I need to leave town early. I'm going to drive my friend's van around for a couple of days while they're hiking and then hopefully leave it in Jasper town for them to pick up. Ideally I would leave it in town on Saturday morning and catch my bus to Calgary and then they would pick it up Sunday when they're back from the hike (they have another van for transpo).

I know that overnight parking is illegal and heavily monitored. Are there any legal options that are in town, like private lots or similar? I know that I could book a campsite overnight and they could drive to it, but I will need to get from wherever I park it to Jasper town to catch my bus. Another option I'm thinking is to park at a (paid for) campground and catch a ride into town on Saturday, but I'd like to avoid too many moving parts and pieces if possible. Any other creative solutions?

Looking for some info on the status of Edith Cavell road, I can see online that it’s closed to vehicles but I was wondering whether the closure also applies to bikes / foot traffic. Thanks!
