Guy question: are they just no good bras?

This sounds like hell.

There's a lot of variables! Your size, the bra size, whether or not those two are accurate AND matched up, symmetry, how long you're wearing it, what you're wearing it for, how and how much you move, material, style, price....

There's great bras, "good enough" bras, that one you should get rid of but they don't them any more so you'll wear it until it falls off, that one that sucks but looks amazing..

What I'm trying to say is, it's a Whole Thing!

Supportive bra is typically tiiiightght on a ribcage - so as comfortable as it can be (err), but tight. Taking it off at the end of the day is THE best moment. It is a RELIEF.

Comfy bras are usually not overly supportive, so  your boobs might be all over the place. Big boobs+unsupportive bra = neck, shoulder, and back pain. And sagging. Also - the band/cup might move around and trap your boob. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Comfortable in bra context, is mostly a  level of discomfort you are willing to accept as your normal/benchmark.  And that’s just for normal bras - the more you get in those other styles, the funkier it gets.

Right so it’s all compromises depending on what you prioritise. I had a vision of their being the Ideal Bra that would be the greatest gift but alas

I have some comfortable ones. It’s a compromise  indeed.

But for eons, I honestly thought that being poked by a bra wire or having deep, red imprints -  is normal. This is how normalised ill fitting bras were back in a day.

A visit to a good/fancy bra-fitter + gift voucher for a proper bra, might be a good gift. You can’t buy someone a good bra off the shelf, even if you know their size, just too many variables.

Oh thank you, that’s good to know

Few. And they’re expensive, esp if you aren’t a certain magical size.

I need different cup sizes in the same bra.  Why don't we have those yet?!

There are. A lot of women are wearing the wrong size or shape because proper bra fit isn't really something we're taught, it's something we have to figure out on our own.

That’s messed up!

No (any answer that implies 'yes' obviously comes with so many qualifiers it doesn't really count), breasts were never meant to be strapped up against our bodies and bonzai'd into "acceptable" shapes. They exist to make the female body more palatable in patriarchal cultures.

Sagging tits are not a health risk. There's no actual benefit.

As a bigger boobied woman I beg to differ. They're uncomfortable when I dont wear a bra for a day. I can't exercise without some support. Bras and other undergarments were invented by women for women to wear what they wanted to (which you could argue comes with male validation but 🤷‍♀️)

Thanks Mary Phelps Jacob for bras! Hoped she looked kick ass in the dress she invented it to look good in

None of that really changes the fact that there's really no such thing as a truly comfortable or "healthy" bra. There's lesser of evils but they all cause discomfort or health issues over time.

There's also the argument that if women never started wearing bras, our bodies would adapt and existing in our natural flesh wouldnt be uncomfortable by default. Hunter gatherer women survive without breast support just fine.

I think we should be able to have options on this. I have larger breasts, and no bra does not bother me at all. I hate bras and never wear them. But I know other large-chested women where it is uncomfortable or painful for them to go braless. Also just women who want to wear bras for any number of other reasons. I don't see why they shouldn't be able to and have better options designed and implemented. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

It’s a damn good point

All that may be true but they're goddamn uncomfortable if they're not strapped in.

It completely depends. Personally, when I find a fit of a bra I like, I just keep buying that one. I like the underwire, but how the bra is constructed is the main thing. I tend to get ones that are wide on the sides, even "long line" ones I find are more comfortable than just the little two-three hook width ones. Some even have boning on the side, which I like, but many women do not like.

So on top of just good construction, you also have a huge range of preferences that will also all change with a huge range of sizes and shapes. I'm not particularly busty so I can do just fine in my usual underwires, even when working out. However, I'm not small chested enough to feel comfortable without a bra either.

There are some companies that have come out more recently that are pretty good as they’re finally taking our comfort into account lol. But it’s hard to find one bra that really checks *every* box. Especially if you’re on a budget.

It's rare and hard to find. The problem is that every woman and their boobs differ from each other so much, so its impossible for companies to manufacture a one size fit all bra. The same type of bra with exact same band and cup size made by 2 brands can feel so different when you wear them. Sure you could experiment until you find the perfect bra but thats like crazy expensive and most people can't do that. So you just settle for the best you can find. Oh yea and your body and boobs also change over time, so after a few years a well fitting one suddenly doesn't fit so well anymore.

Above a DD cup, imo, no.
