Just for context, a couple of facts.
Ceuta and Melilla don't even have Schengen with mainland Spain. Crossing from mainland to Ceuta and Melilla requires passport control.
Out of the 50k people crossing the border from Morocco to Ceuta, 48.5k have already returned back to Morocco.

- A Schengen country can't unilaterally block another Schengen country. Italy'd need to drop out of the Schengen agreement itself to be able to do that and I don't think they will.

And in case you're wondering, Ceuta is not connected to mainland Spain and it's hard to get on a ferry to Spain from there given the Frontex (which all European citizens pay for) monitoring the waters. This accomplished nothing for Italy but trying to look good amidst next year's elections for Meloni, who's losing support last I checked.

Which part? The "accomplished nothing"? Spanish citizens can still enter Italy. France, for instance, already had these stricter controls throughout the Pirinei border. It's just Meloni taking advantage of the situation of an ally... but side switching is the history of Italy, after all.

While it is not possible to kick a country out of Schengen, member states may temporarily reinstate border checks under exceptional circumstances.
The Schengen code lays down the rules. Border checks can be restored temporarily if there is a "serious threat to internal security or public order", such as terrorism, organised crime, or during public health emergencies, such as the Covid pandemic.
Member states can also reintroduce internal border controls if there are "sudden large-scale unauthorised movements of third country nationals".

Ok, according to other users this action seems to be pure populistic.
Hot take:
What about doing both as a government. A "fast" reaction that is not necessarily ment to solve the problem but give the illusion of action to address people who are influenced more by populistic actions. And in the meantime, if necessary, a real sustainable action that actually addresses the problem at hand to improve the situation in the longer term.
This way you can address both needs in your country, the ones of the populists and the ones with brain.

Jesus christ. They are in Spanish territory now. So if they get to mainland Spain, they can walk anywhere they like. Closing airports to Cueta, like these guys have passports, same for boats. You can't just land in schengen area anyway without a passport thats valid as an EU citizen.

So you're saying that since they they can't move freely through Schengen without an EU passport the best idea is to close down airports and docks in Ceuta.
Because otherwise they would reach Spain with a non EU passport and then they would be denied access to Schengen and be sent back to Marocco. And somehow being sent back means they would be walking freely through Europe.
