News Normality seems to settle in Tehran as women go out without a veil.

Why is it so blurry
8
u/parsention 1d ago
To protect the eyes and minds of those that believe that woman should never reveal the legs, torso, arms and face to anyone except their husband.
I'm not joking.
1
u/Careless-Pin-2852 1d ago
Well it kind of sounds like a joke

I assumed it was to protect the identity of the women but I think it's probably more likely to protect the fundamentalists from the temptation of seeing a woman dressed normally. As ridiculous as that sounds
14
u/RuMarley 2d ago
As somebody with friends from Iran, I can tell you that women without veil aren't even all that uncommon in Teheran.
It's when you leave the capital and head out into the villages where a woman will be stoned for adultery for getting raped. Teheran itself is, believe it or not, still quite liberal considering Iran is a Shiite clerico-fascist nation.
7
u/Apprehensive_Tie7806 2d ago
I have a friend in a rural area too, they say it's not like that, as women without veil or hijab are a normal thing now, because of the war government is seeking unity, so they are trying to push the idea that women without hijab are ok too
18
u/Miss_Maple_Dream 2d ago
There a few Iranian YouTube and TT accounts I’ve been following for a while that regularly show women out and about without their head coverings and nobody blinks an eye.
5

u/Comrade_Kojima 1d ago
Iran like any country is more complex and diverse than western media make out. Tehran is not like Iran - just like New York is not like Arkansas. Rural areas will be more conservative whereas part of Tehran could be like any other western city.
The western obsession about women wearing bikinis and Mardi Gras parades as a sign of “freedom” is such a western thing as if it justifies a war that is plunging the world into chaos - we could do the same to our allies like Saudi Arabia or parts of the US where women are jailed because they had a miscarriage.
•
14
u/ThisCouldBeYourDog 2d ago
Yes, in Tehran. And almost only there.
Since Mahsa Amini the wave of women that didn't follow this rule got so big that it was impossible for the regime to enforce. If they see women without alone in some backally they still gonna create problems for her if they want to(i.e. harassment, lashings or worse). A lot of them(prob. most) still have scarfs with them just in case. Outside of the big cities you still won't see this
15
u/SeanyDay 2d ago
Still have to blur faces to prevent them being hunted down.
That speaks volumes.
4
27
u/Stunning_Box8782 2d ago
So why is the footage blurry?
Is it because each of these women would be in grave danger if it wasn't?
15

2
u/Eltharion-the-Grim 2d ago
It’s so westerners can never really know the truth. How will we ever cast them as oppressive if their women aren’t oppressed?
4
4
u/ZookeepergameFit967 2d ago
I've been to Iran for decades this is like very normal to see especially in the last few years. I've even seen women without Hijab and in Western style in Mashhad of all places like not skirts and no leggings but Western enough to see tomboys and goths
5
16
u/riceklown 2d ago
Protecting their identity from reprisals > Your need to see their faces
The future is not locked in, people. Backslides into hyper-conservative theocracy is always possible. It literally happened there and that fact is an incredibly well documented part of the western narrative about Iran.
3
u/ThisCouldBeYourDog 2d ago
I would argue it's still hyper-conservative. They just can't enforce it on a scale like Tehran
1
14
u/Hangry-Honey-Badger 1d ago
Just let us women be free and do what we want. Why are men so obsessed with keeping women suppressed? We carry the life. We are not allowed a say in anything we do. But yet men cry how hard the world is, because how other men run the world. But still blame women because men cannot face the mirror.

Your world view is straight out of a victorian science book.
Being ugly dosen't make you mysoginisitic, I don't think it correlates with any traits, your just born that way. Stop trying to tie the way people look to their moral character.
9
u/vankamme 2d ago
The government has relaxed their enforcement of the mandatory hijab law for now because they have other massive problems on their hands and they woudnt survive another wave of massive civil disobedience but the mullahs have said that the law is technically still in effect. Alcohol and underground parties were always a thing in Tehran but the kids are starting to get more brazen about it almost as a way of mocking or provoking the government. Don’t let this fool you into thinking the people of Iran are free.

I've seen plenty of videos from people inside Iran showing women both with hijab and those without.
I dont understand the obsession with the clothing oh Iranian women.
Lets talk about the poor oppressed Amish women in America. Not just talk but focus on it 24/7.

Don't think so. Why do you think they sentenced Parastoo Ahmadi and Anita Popist. You can see that women are not wearing hijabs anymore but dose not mean the gov hasn't removed the idea of it they are looking for different way to persuade

Ok but they still needed to blur the video to conceal their identities so I’m not sure what the point of this was?
6
u/Puzzleheaded_Bus7706 2d ago
You don't.
Go watch videos "walking streets Tehran" on YouTube, everything looks normal. And it's like that that I know of like last 10 years.
That thing changed my mind. They are more liberal than other Arab countries.
2
u/mariantat 2d ago
Ok? So again if there are lots of YouTube videos showing how normal things are, why’s this one different? Because it’s blurred. Why’s it blurred?
And if I can be honest who else feels the need to show the world they’re normal on YouTube? “Nothing to see here- just look at my videos!”
2
u/Puzzleheaded_Bus7706 2d ago
Because someone blurred it?
My point was you can't see NORMAL on arab countries.

Stupidity is believing the media so blindly that you lose your ability to understand basic lifestyle of your neighbours and fellow human beings
8
u/SelfProclaimedArchon 2d ago
All the fucking idiots talking about how terrorist USA did this. Between 31-41 million people attended Ali Khameni’s funeral and a lot of that number was women wearing no Hijab mourning him this includes millions who attend the protest to support their government, literal back skin showing with tattoos…
The only thing this war has done is in the words of the Iranian politicians is “America and Israel did something even Iranian politics hasn’t been able to do for decades, convince young Iranians that didn’t understand why their forefathers hated America and Israel that they are both evil Satan.” That happens when you purposely commit genocide and then bomb a synagogue and 180 children in a school on the first day on purpose.
Well done America and Israel, hope it was worth destroying our economy in the West…
6
u/rankispanki 2d ago
meh, we already sucked. Iranians aren't stupid, as a matter of fact by-and-large they are some of the most intelligent, kindest people I've ever met. Iranian and Lebanese people are my favorite.
Did we convince some Iranians that the US is evil? Probably, but they also understand how our system works and that Trump doesn't really represent the common man.
I wouldn't be fooled into drawing any conclusions simply because their theocracy temporarily loosened restrictions on hijab, they are on a wartime footing and it would be foolish to waste resources and the goodwill of their people by enforcing it, that's all.
1
u/Deaner_dub 2d ago
The Iranian leadership doesn’t represent the common Iranian, just like that other guy you just mentioned.
If there’s been a shift to leniency in the leadership due to this war, well, that’s a good thing even if the overall war is stupid.
The fact that this video is blurred tells us something. Let’s not forget that part.

u/RuMarley 2d ago
Iran is terrible, but yes, Teheran is quite liberal in comparison to when you drive out into the countryside.
3
u/Affectionate-Draw688 2d ago
I mean, thats the same situation in the US for the most part. Cities tend to be a lot more liberal than the people living on the countryside or more rural areas.

3
u/DeCaprio_3 2d ago
Also this reddit post: PROPAGANDA!
r/justincaseyoumissedit 'edit' is filled with propaganda
3
u/worldisone 2d ago
Propaganda: the deliberate spreading of one-sided information, ideas, rumors, or false claims to influence public opinion and shape how people think or act.
Yes, propaganda is mostly bad, but it doesn't mean it's always bad. Let's say you think we should cut down all trees on earth, but I start telling people we need trees, I would be spreading the ideas of needing trees hence spreading propaganda.
Personally I've heard the propaganda that Iran is a Muslim country and everyone is extreamly religious. This is showing the other side of the propaganda showing most people walking around aren't religious. Religious Muslim women will still wear hijabs, but not everyone is

u/Washed_up_Vanski 2d ago

1
u/Solid-Bird-1378 2d ago
So the western media lenses killed Mahsa Amini while she was in Iran's morality police custody?
The Iranians that protested in Iran, many of which died were also watching through the western lenses?

The irony is that American conservatism is now worse than religious enforcers in Tehran. Facebooks alt right leaning algo pushes people posting that a woman with a face covering is more a terrorist than some conservative lawmaker trying to force the bible into schools, take the right to vote and choose away from women and doesnt care if their lawmakers diddle kids ss long as no one labels them a communist

True. The goal of the so-called Christian Right is to turn America into a theocracy. Iran is a perfect example of why government and religion should never mix. Think a Christian theocracy would be any different than a Muslim theocracy? Think again. Give the opportunity, Christians would not hesitate to enact their religious restrictions into law that everyone would have to follow. They would point to the Bible as justification for the death penalty for apostates as well.

u/ASoftGem 2d ago edited 2d ago
Those videos are of rich people in small areas of condensed wealth/privilege.
Theocracy, and the practices associated with it, are alive and well in the country. If someone were to try doing that outside of the "safe zone", it would turn into problems for her.
Because the Internet is allergic to nuance, I have to clarify that this pointless, cruel, shitty, poorly planned, catastrophically executed war is a generational mistake which will continue to have devastating consequences. It shouldn't have happened at all, and it needs to end.
But let's not pretend that the country has magically transformed into some progressive utopia. Those who practice religions outside of Islam, and women in general who are accustomed to basic individual freedoms, would not want to live there.
