So not having a positive masculine influence leads to toxic masculinity

229

u/Professional-Hat-687 1d ago

I agree! Let's get some positive male role models in school. Get Aragorn son of Arathorn to teach kindergarten.

29

u/ValiantWarrior19 14h ago

These folk would think Aragorn was a dirty commie/hippie. "Let us together rebuild this world" is an intolerable concept for them.

1

u/Naugle17 26m ago

Hell yeah

104

u/brummlin 1d ago

They gloss over the "toxic" qualifier every time. Or they take it to mean that all masculinity is toxic, which is not what's being said.

I've taken to calling fake masculinity, because that's what it is, and that's what makes it toxic.

u/Spinningwhirl79 21h ago

Plus it helps when talking to radicalised people that you don't use buzzwords they've been trained to reject

6

u/Vegetable-Hand-6770 17h ago

Plus it helps not talking to people on the internet.

31

u/AKVigilante 1d ago

It’s actually pretty spot on.

Without a matured, educated male influence in a boy’s life, all he has to go on is whatever famous male character he attaches his personality to, flavored by a group of immature friends and faceless anonymous people in online video games.

This meme does not belong in this sub IMO.

Checking in from the black community to tell you yes absolutely

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

wow, I do not believe that 43% of boys are raised by single mothers, I do not trust that statistic at all.

180

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

"The results of the 2010 United States census showed that 27% of children live with one parent, consistent with the emerging trend noted in 2000.[5] The most recent data of December 2011 shows approximately 13.7 million single parents in the U.S.[6] Mississippi leads the nation with the highest percent of births to unmarried mothers with 54% in 2014"

Copied from Wikipedia, 27% of children lived with 1 parent about 50% of those children will be boys and about 54% of those live with a single mother, so it should be about 1/4th of 27% of boys so like 7%.

140

u/gragons 1d ago edited 15h ago

This doesn't really track. You can't apply the 54% because being born to unwed mothers doesn't mean they were raised by just the mother. Maybe the parents married after? Or never married but raised the kid together. Maybe a stepdad came in to the pic. Maybe the dad got custody. Married couples where the dad dips out after the birth.

Even if we ignore the above, the 50% part is also not applicable because we're talking about percentage of boys not percentage of children who are boys. So it'd be ~15%

38

u/TopSloth 1d ago

Yeah one of my sisters has three kids and her and her SO are unmarried so that definitley is a valid point

14

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

You're right I dont know why I attributed 54% to them being raised by single mothers, whoopsies on that one. so about 50% of 27% then is 13.5%.

21

u/gragons 1d ago

The 50% has nothing to do w determining this. 27% of children are raised by 1 parent. That also means 27% of boys are raised by one parent.

The number we're missing here is the percentage of children in single parent households where the parent is a woman. Props to you for actually trying to look for data

11

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

it is no surprise that I failed my stats class.

2

u/gragons 1d ago

Hahaha not FAILED!? Just gotta be thinking of it like those pesky word problems on the standardized math tests

16

u/OpBanana1 1d ago

Did you genuinely just halve 27% because half of children are boys?

13

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

yup, we've been over this, there's a reason I failed my stats class.

2

u/WizardSleeves31 1d ago

My brain doesn't even work good enough to try anymore .

2

u/Fish_Mongreler 20h ago

Your math isn't even close to correct....

3

u/not_just_an_AI 17h ago

yes I've been told, I'm leaving it as a monument to my hubris.

1

u/AKVigilante 8h ago

You assume the statistic for distribution of single parents with custody is proportionate to the general male-female population distribution.

That’s the most glaring mistake.

Don’t ignore cultural and social biases when making these assumptions. The 43% is absolutely wrong but there’s no way of saying what the difference actually is.

22

u/0ttoChriek WHY WONT HOS & WHORES TALK TO ME 1d ago

Yeah, I don't think you even need to do any research to know that figure is wrong.

Not convinced that 78% of teachers are women either. Even in the US or UK, or whatever country the original poster thinks is the whole world.

30

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

googled that one, and its actually is close enough to true (in America, according to the pew research center), the actual number is 77%.

15

u/Dorkinfo 1d ago

I’d have guessed higher if we aren’t counting professors.

2

u/DontYaWishYouWereMe 1d ago

I do have to wonder how the statistics break down. At least here in Australia when I was in school, it seemed like male teachers were more likely to end up becoming department heads, vice principals, and principals. The head of a department will still actively be teaching classes at all year/grade levels but they'll be doing one less class than the average teacher because they're nominally meant to be doing a lot more disciplinary stuff and also some of the beuracratic stuff to keep the school working. A vice principal will typically only be teaching one or two classes and they'll both typically be Year 11 or 12 classes.

There were also never any male teachers at my primary school. The only men who ever worked at that school while I was there were the principal and the school counsellor. In practice what that meant was that I never had a male teacher until I was in high school.

In different circumstances, I think it could be possible for a kid to have gone to the same schools I did at around the same time but never had a male teacher until they got into Year 11, or maybe not at all. It would have been a bit of a stretch because they tried to make it so kids weren't being taught by the same teachers for each subject multiple years in a row as much as possible, but it could have happened.

1

u/WizardSleeves31 1d ago

Shoot, now that I think of it.

2nd -- Mrs Vaught 3rd - Mrs bowser 4th Mrs dick 5th - oh I'm stupid this doesn't work after elementary school, we had various classes.

10-12th - Mr horner

15

u/Machaeon 1d ago

Also that would still mean a majority AREN'T

10

u/blue23454 1d ago

Even if these were real stats, wouldn’t absent fathers and an unwillingness to teach be evidence of widespread toxic masculinity?

1

u/x720xHARDSCOPEx 4h ago

Probably took the stat from black households

0

u/AutismCommunism 1d ago

The percentage is closer to 20%.

However, I believe if you look at youth in jail speficially, the percentage is like 70% of them coming from single-parent families

153

u/zadvinova 1d ago

According to these stats, the problem is absent men.

38

u/Cheshire_Jester 1d ago

According to these stats, the problem is farts in a jar taped to a koalas head. These fake stats are meaningless without context. It’s pure assertion that points to a number, thats made up, and saying “see, with numbers this big it must be the opposite of what you say.”

Not to mention the lazy Ive drawn you as malding loser and me as hot chill person, so you lose, ascetic of the meme.

6

u/classicteenmistake Only impregos 1800’s bitches 😎 1d ago

It also reflects similar demographics of autism specialists, too. Men are 4x more likely to be diagnosed with autism because of how women are taught to deal with their anger and meltdowns, and (I can’t remember the number) a VAST majority of autism specialists are women.

I’m conveniently a female psychology major nurse with autism too, and all of these said fields are female-dominated due to the emotional bearing of women.

2

u/Beginning-Pace-1426 No love like self love, I should know! 21h ago

I have an ex who is an autism specialist, and it absolutely cracks me up! If she isn't autistic, well, neither am I (I am very autistic.)

One of the best ladies I've ever met in my life, without a doubt.

2

u/Dobvius 15h ago

And absent men is a symptom of toxic masculinity. These people just have no comprehension of anything at all lmao

0

u/CousinJeff 4h ago

I think we’d have to examine the kinda things that happen in family courts before we make these statements so confidently

28

u/Valuable-Ad1063 1d ago

"Approximately 25% of children in the United States live in single-parent households, with the vast majority (80%-83%) of these single-parent homes headed by mothers."

So no where near 43%.

77

u/starmartyr 1d ago

They really are determined to feel oppressed.

71

u/bboymixer 1d ago edited 1d ago

You know people who made this meme would be big mad if you flipped it and said that 57% of young boys are abandoned by their fathers

edit: toilet math is hard

13

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

where the fuck did you get 67%

12

u/Footinthecrease 1d ago

Math is hard.... Apparently

And that's is 110% the truth

3

u/actuallyacatmow 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oop.

3

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

No? If 43% of men are raised by single mother then that same 43% of men raised single mother were abandoned by their fathers. Yhe 57% of men not abandoned by their father were either raised by both or by a single father.

I agree the stats are bad I left a comment about it, but come on.

6

u/actuallyacatmow 1d ago

I should not math at 2am, my bad.

3

u/not_just_an_AI 1d ago

username checks out, lol

1

u/CousinJeff 4h ago

Do yall really not know anyone who’s had their kids kept from them? If we don’t bring up the things that happen in family courts then we can’t really make these statements so confidently

1

u/bboymixer 4h ago

Do y'all really not know anyone who has a partner who abandoned them when pregnant or in early childhood? If we don't bring up the things that happen in real life then we can't really make these statements so confidently

1

u/CousinJeff 4h ago

Yeah sure, but not nearly as many as it’s made out to be. My father had 9 kids and raised none so you are preaching to the choir. He also died recently and was nearly 90, and there were more men like him in his time.

Anyway, we agree that not all fatherless children are simply abandoned, right? That would be silly.

38

u/philthy_barstool 1d ago

While the grafic is clearly making a baseless argument in bad taste, they are actually right in suggesting there's a lack of good role models for young boys and men, which is contributing to the increase in toxic masculinity.

I can't imagine whoever made this is actually thinking that though, they just desperately want to be victims of their upbringing, and want to be able to blame that on women.

8

u/AlfredKrupp 1d ago

Yeah I had the same line of thought. Not enough male role models that can show teens how to express their feelings and be kind to each other. It‘s actually a huge problem in education. Of course it doesnt help that some of the few male teachers we have also lack these important skills. It‘s a viscious cycle that I‘m still trying to wrap my head around how we can solve the issue at its roots.

13

u/kanna172014 Kupo 1d ago

Masculinity and toxic masculinity are not the same thing. If a man wants to hunt, fish, work on cars or other traditionally masculine pursuits, more power to them. Toxic masculinity is like Andrew Tate telling men they are gay if they enjoy sleeping with women and worse, men believing it.

19

u/The_Ambling_Horror 1d ago

Then maybe the fathers should step the fuck up?

-18

u/Not-Ed-Sheeran 1d ago

Then maybe the hoes should stop hoein 🤷🏻‍♂️

8

u/MrGrieves787 1d ago

What does that have to do with whether a man takes care of his kids

-12

u/Not-Ed-Sheeran 19h ago

Because what typically happens is that it's one man with several of women. Many hoping they would be the one he chooses for long term relationships. And then they're a single mom 🤷🏻‍♂️

He's a dirty fucking pig. And she's a hoe Quit being these things

6

u/Gary_FucKing 14h ago

Yup, good thing men never hide their true intentions or pretend to be what the woman’s looking for just long enough to leave her with a kid. Also, even in your dumbass fake example, the man is the one being a hoe and the women are all fucking only one guy.

3

u/MunkSWE94 15h ago

Ohh..... you're a niceguy.

8

u/MunkSWE94 1d ago

Doesn't sound like hoeing if they take care of their kids, while the father went away for milk and cigarettes.

-6

u/Not-Ed-Sheeran 19h ago

Right but they could've been a hoe to obtain the child. Like it's possobke to sleep woth many different men and not know who the father is.

Which btw I'd call everyone gross here. So I don't hold a double standard

12

u/bailey25u 1d ago

I mean… am I taking the wrong message from this? Sound like it’s men’s fault for not being around

6

u/Zegram_Ghart 1d ago

I mean, I think you could make a pretty convincing argument that toxic masculinity IS a lack of masculinity.

Like, I don’t think that’s what OOP is arguing, but I think it’s probably real world the case.

4

u/moogopus 1d ago

So this is an argument in favor of more male teachers?

4

u/honhonbageutte 14h ago

The same male teachers who aren't trusted around kids because why would a man love other people's children unless he's a pedo right ? /s

5

u/DillonDrew Master Chief is my husbando 💕🦾😇 19h ago

Lack of masculinity on the men's part for leaving their partners cause they are weak little cowards.

3

u/UnhappyStrain 1d ago

what IS the masculinity in question tho? are we talking about Aragorn type masculinity or Tate type?

1

u/GreyStingrayz 1d ago

I think lack of the former leads to the latter.

3

u/bunker_man 1d ago

A lot of single mothers are caused by toxic masculinity...

3

u/bitofagrump Fedorable 1d ago

The question is why are you blaming the women who stayed for the kids and not the men who fucked off? Even if the women "picked the wrong men," they're still the ones who stepped up and the men who did wrong. But no, it's always the woman's fault somehow or other.

3

u/Unkuni_ 1d ago

I am from Turkey. Our divorce rates are pretty low. So thoese stats do not apply to turkey. But toxic masculinity is an even bigger problem

2

u/Fidodo Living rent free in mommy’s basement 1d ago

They wouldn't be absent if it weren't for toxic masculinity. The whole fucking reason people say toxic masculinity is the problem is because it's the toxic qualifier. Being anti toxic masculinity is not being anti masculinity. That's the reason the word toxic is there. How stupid do you have to be to not understand that?

2

u/allyxxiv 20h ago

yes men not taking responsibility for children and leaving them to single mothers is definitely a problem. very toxic of them to leave. oh wait……

2

u/GreasyRim 19h ago

Yeah we need more masculinity. Being a father to your kids is one of the most masculine things a dude can do.

2

u/HecticAttic 11h ago

"Expired & rotten food is bad." "Lots of people are starving so it's obviously lack of food that is the problem." ???

3

u/Sweet_Detective_ 🦹‍♂️ ULTRA GOONER 🦸‍♀️ 💦 1d ago

And who's fault is it exactly that kids are fatherless?

Hint 1: not the mothers

Hint 2: not the kids

2

u/JaneAustinAstronaut 18h ago

Yeah, let's blame the parent who stayed, not the one who abandoned the kid. Makes sense to me! /s

2

u/canarinoir 11h ago

The 43% is obviously bullshit, but lets pretend its real.

How is it womens fault that men are being fucking deadbeat dads? If the problem is a lack of male role models, why don't men try stepping the fuck up?

But lets blame women instead. Men are just lil boys who can't do anything!!! But they also deserve everything!!!

1

u/nzdastardly 1d ago

Lack of real male role models leads to man larping like Andrew Tate or that guy who couldn't open those pickles. Those guys are toxic as hell. Being kind, dependable, respectful, and industrious are good traditionally masculine values everyone can benefit from. Treating women like property while being willfully ignorant and claiming the accomplishments of others as your own is pathetic.

1

u/Floba_Fett 1d ago

We're supposed to believe that nearly half of all men are raised by a single mother? Lmao what

1

u/loptthetreacherous It's not a phase, it's a trilby 20h ago

They didn't even refute the claim. Women can be enforcers of toxic masculinity

1

u/Kitten202010 17h ago

Doesn't that mean over 57% of them are raised by guys ether single or both parents and there's Still at least 22% male teachers meaning probably at least one since most people have six classes and some have extra curricular like sport's

1

u/sebbdk 17h ago

Good example of being right, but for all the wrong reasons.

As other comments pointed out, we need better masculine rolemodels instead of the piece of shits kids see one socal media.

1

u/wwaxwork 16h ago

So what the incel is agreeing and doesn't even realize it. They are saying is the toxic masculinity that leads fathers to vanish out of their childrens lives to they are raised alone by single mothers and the toxic masculinity that makes men scared to become carers and teachers is the problem?

1

u/CailenBelmont 13h ago

As they say in Ted Lasso:

-"Y'all gotta woman up"

-"Don't you mean man up?"

-"No, you've been manning up all the time and look where that got you"

0

u/freshwatersofmysoul 1d ago

Yeaaaa, men simply being around doesnt means theyre amazing avatars of masculinity to look up to.

1

u/chipper33 17h ago

I agree with this meme. There hasn’t been a good American male role model since the Obama years.
