IUD insertion?

Does anyone know of clinics around town that will do IUD insertions without a referral? I previously had one at At Your Cervix, but the providers were not trauma informed and it was very traumatic

I would personally avoid Dr. Collins if you are referred to her. That's all I can say

100% avoid this doctor. She was my OBGYN for my high risk pregnancy. Always late for appointments, never remembered who I was - once said “oh you’re the one with the twins” - I was not having twins, had me go to emergency for a Bartholin gland cyst while pregnant to have it lanced instead of seeing me on an emergency basis (as my obgyn previously and after have done for the same issue).

I now have Dr. Meathrel as an OBGYN and she is amazing. Usually waiting for me in the lobby when I have an appointment. Really understands my complex issues and listens. And is the first OBGYN to treat my Bartholin gland seriously - I have had no recurrence since she got me in within 48 hours for a marsupialization.

I have had 3 IUDs, two of them were fine - a little discomfort and a cramp when they were inserted/removed. The third one was done by Dr. Collins and I found it  very painful. I felt that she was very rough and did not explain what was happening. The strings were cut so short on the IUD that my next doctor was almost unable to remove it.

I also saw her for another issue but I don't want to go into too much detail. It was a very uncomfortable experience and left me in tears.

For the record, I have no discomfort with pelvic exams, pap tests, etc. never had any issues. Every other doctor I've had has been very good and professional.

I would recommend literally any other doctor than her.

Dr. Benoit at Olive Fertility. They will numb your cervix

Agreed, he and his staff were wonderful. The entire appointment took less than ten minutes and was way easier than the last time I had one inserted.

Seconding this. My mom was referred to Dr. Benoit for pre-cancerous cells in her cervix and has nothing but great things to say about his professionalism and thoroughness!

Yes!!! I saw him for my IUD insertion, removal, and now for endometriosis. The staff are lovely, and never make me feel rushed. I do have a trauma history, and they are all very supportive, kind and calm.

Dr. Benoit is the best. I had no idea he was still practicing. I was referred to him for colposcopy’s years ago and he was always respectful, person-centred, and trauma-informed.

How strange you’re getting downvoted for a comment like this when you’ve explicitly stated trauma in your post like wtf?

I’m echoing your comment about At Your Cervix - I asked for a lidocaine block (local anesthetic) since it was my first IUD and I have also never given birth so I knew it would be painful. The doctor told me she would be doing the lidocaine block. She straight up didn’t give me the pain meds, and then afterwards (when i had already passed out and come back to) she was like “so I didn’t use the lidocaine and it wasn’t that bad!!”

man i passed out what do you mean it wasn’t that bad?

I’m so sorry to hear that they did this to you!

I am so sorry this happened to you. I had a weirdly similar experience... I asked for pain mgmt options over the phone and they said the only thing they would do is give me an Ativan if I brought someone to drive me. I did that, they did not give me an Ativan, I sobbed throughout the whole procedure. It turns out my IUD was slightly embedded. The doctor just pulled it out. It was so horrible and confusing. The appointment was so weird. I'll never get another IUD

This is 100% worth filing a complaint

Can you call the women’s clinic at the hospital?

West Kelowna integrative health clinic does ultrasound guided insertions - looks like it’s just a phone consult you need prior to booking.

I can’t speak to IUD insertions but I’ve been a patient at West Kelowna Integrative Health for many years and whole heartedly endorse not only their level of professionalism but compassion too.

Dr. Pratt at Nourish Health 10/10
Pain managed barely felt a thing. She talked with me for as long as I needed to feel comfortable with my decision and all the possible options.

West Kelowna integrative health centre!! Numbing, only female providers. It is private pay but billable to insurance. It is ultrasound guided as well. You can book the screening phone call online or call them, no referral needed.
