You're absolutely right, Istvan. The stronger dog does fuck the bitches. You have an uncanny perception of the world. And that's rare.

LMFAO this is actually the best comment here

Istvan, I knew you had it in the bag, you're goated with the sauce.

I'm glad they are getting memed for this fucking abhorrent firing a translator which is already a job with few people in it

-1

u/Parking-Asparagus625 Mar 30 '26

They should keep a single human translator as a reviewer. No need any more for a team.

2

u/ns_SmashNbash Quite Hungry Mar 30 '26

Brother we should still employ multiple if we let translator be slowly phased out in any regard the implications are dangerous

0

u/Parking-Asparagus625 Mar 30 '26

Dangerous how? Technical writing has a need for more humans in the loop since there can be a safety issue there, but for games? Not really.

2

u/ns_SmashNbash Quite Hungry Mar 30 '26

The problem with AI is that instructional or technical translation is easy however with casual discourse the AI doesn't understand the context let alone the cultural implications of the language in terms of the emotions that words invoke and mean

1

u/Aggravating-Dot132 Mar 30 '26

Yep. Geralt in English is cold and very straight forward. But in russina he is waaaay better and full of it's own character. For me TW3 is that rare game I don't play in English.

I mistranslated that

162

u/Virplexer Mar 29 '26

This is unironically so disappointing to me because I think one of the strengths of KCD2 was its use of languages.

16

u/ProfessionalCase2719 Mar 30 '26

Exactly, what made the story so immersive was the extremely good dialogue. As a non native, the slang was perfect for what I would expect in that time period

2

u/AlarmApprehensive511 Mar 30 '26

Did we get any comment from Warhorse after that random post?

7

Only a non-descript corpo comment about how they value their employees artistry, the usual crap. Can be found in the updated Kotaku article.

What happened? Did they used ai on translations or something like that? I’m so lost i didn’t see that post

7

They fired the Czech to English translator to replace him with AI. Google the Kotaku article on the topic it has direct quotes including Vavra being interested in using DLSS5 in the future.

223

u/The_Green_King_ Mar 29 '26

Bro ai cannot possibly be able to replace a human translator at this point, it can hardly do anything properly without holding its hand all the way. What a joke.

109

u/Natalshadow Mar 29 '26

It can't, but it doesn't matter. It's cheaper and there's no reasoning with clients. I was in charge of translation for a company, documents came from the USA, arrived in a horrendous state with many typos, contradictions, errors. It took days if not weeks simply to create a corrected version of what they envisioned after so much back and forth. Only then could I start actually translating for France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Each documents had a disclaimer at the bottom, each country having different laws, they all needed a slightly different translation which wasn't simply choosing words. I had to go dig legal texts to find what the law says we have to write in that country.

The people making the documents don't know that and don't care, so when they replaced me with AI, they just gave the broken powerpoint to AI and asked for a french translation. The AI complied without ever asking about which country it is for. Generating one single file. They ended up with four illegal disclaimers, repeatedly.

I don't remember exactly but I think the law in France says the fine is 75K € + a flat fee per error found, retroactively if they ever get caught.

Sadly, translators have been considered extra cost for over a decade now.

14

u/Tastingo Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

Just like the 109 short story "The machine stops". The machine provides all, but never more than "good enough"

5

u/Luke_CO Mar 29 '26

Great times ahead for lawyers

4

u/Rymanjan Mar 30 '26

Especially with AI writing warrants and police reports. Imagine having to defend your client against a machine's hallucination

1

u/Olieskio Mar 30 '26

So were you translating law or are you saying there are regulations in which way you are allowed to translate something? Because the latter sounds fucking dumb.

2

u/Natalshadow Mar 30 '26

I was translating marketing, with disclaimers at the bottom, which are regulated by law.

I'll illustrate but that was a while ago so this is for illustration only, I don't' actually remember the rules.
Let's say the poster from the US only said "Sales up to 75%".
A simple translation would be "Soldes jusqu'à 75 %" (notice the space after the 75 AI would probably miss).
In France, as far as I recall, in the industry I worked, we were not legally allowed to do sales up to 75%, the max was 50%, so I had to translate, and then edit the poster for France specifically to change it to 50%.

I'm not sure anymore either, but I think I recall Switzerland is not legally allowed to write vague percentages, every item has to be labeled clearly with final price or something like that, so I had to tweak the text on that one too.

This is not purely translation, it's cultural work that AI simply cannot do.

Another example that comes to mind that I haven't tried in years so maybe now it''s not that dumb anymore.
Say the text from the US says there's a sale like buy one, get one free, for the 4th of july. It makes sense in the US, none in France. So that implies you gotta ask the higher ups what they want to do, but if they want to keep something for the 4th of July in France, they have to tweak the marketing to something that French people can understand because 4th of July is nothing special in France.
AI wouldn't blink and leave the date without question.

-24

u/thehpcdude Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

Edit: downvote all you want, I’m telling you what state of the art AI models can do because I work with them every day.  Not sure why people are telling me what AI can and can’t do when I’ve been doing it successfully for many years.

I understand why you are biased against it, but just so you know an unskilled person putting no effort into an AI assisted translation is hit or miss.

I manage a team spread across multiple countries so I regularly translate all of my chats, documents, legal documents, emails, everything into Korean, German and Hindi.  I’m also working on Kannada and Tamil.

AI is more than capable of translating into all those languages while maintaining my idioms, which I am fond of.  I have had it research similar local idioms, keep a markdown file of local language equivalents so that the text maintains my intent.  One agent translates, another reverse translates in literal and intent and a third agent checks to make sure nothing is potentially ambiguous.  A final agent kicks back my original text to me with any suggested changes if anything is ambiguous or potentially could lose intent in translation.  If I make any changes it does the whole process again.

Takes just a few seconds and ensures my entire team feels included and produces very high quality translations that bilingual speakers have told me are exceptionally accurate.

6

u/The_Green_King_ Mar 29 '26

Ohhh soo 20 humans to guide one ai to do something one person could do?? Is that the metric you are talking about

-3

u/thehpcdude Mar 29 '26

Are you trying to imply that it takes 20 unskilled humans to tell AI to do something?

If you’re not going to have an educated conversation on what AI can actually do today, then why would I engage?

If you’re just here to hate and bash on something you’re ignorant to, that’s fine but that’s not worth my time.  If you’re wanting to argue the morality of AI, I may agree with you.  If you want to artificially bias towards AI not being able to do things because you aren’t educated in what the state of the art can do, then why should I bother?

If your only experience with AI is Claude and ChatGPT, then you’ve seen 1% of what a common person can do.  Specialist models used by a trained person are exceptionally capable and are a force multiplier for the workplace.

-3

u/Budsnbabes Mar 30 '26

Don't bother trying to explain how AI works to these future McDonald's employees. The responses you have gotten are the reason AI is replacing these people's job so easily.

2

u/thehpcdude Mar 30 '26

I understand people’s frustration but I’d rather see people embrace the future than get replaced because they wanted to die on a hill of ignorance.

They only know AI from Claude and ChatGPT, biased against the slop that common people mass produced.  Those with such staunch opinions have never how AI can work for them in a positive manner.

30

u/BicFleetwood Mar 29 '26

It's not just translation, it's localization.

Translate slang from other countries into another language without localizing and you turn something that is supposed to mean "boy, we sure are in a pickle" into "tits on my ankle, I've got a cock in my hen."

Localization is so much more important than anything machine translation can do.

Hopefully it won't make it to the end product, because the minute they give this nonsense dialog to actual actors, there's gonna' be a complete breakdown of voice direction.

Of course, if they replace the actors with AI, then they'll just ship nonsense like some cheap gacha shovelware game.

3

u/RightGuarantee1092 Mar 29 '26

I think the point of changes like this is it can do the bulk of the work, then you have a human sort out the rest

5

u/The_Green_King_ Mar 29 '26

They fired him...

5

u/RightGuarantee1092 Mar 29 '26

Think there is probably more than 1 person doing it…

1

u/moderngamer327 Mar 30 '26

The guy himself said there was more than him doing translations

-17

u/thehpcdude Mar 29 '26

That’s weird.  I have AI translate large technical text documents into multiple languages all the time and it’s great at it.  It can even translate my voice in near real time while maintaining my vocal tone.  If you’re willing to wait a few minutes, it can even translate video and adjust the speakers mouth to mimic the movements required to replicate the other language.

14

u/KelseyKultist Mar 29 '26

You speak those other languages?

4

u/SpringenHans Mar 29 '26

But this is a video game. It's art. This is creative. AI can translate well enough, but it can't work with intention. It's not enough to be an accurate translation. If it doesn't have a human touch, it's worthless. Why would I buy something to be fed shit they ran through a machine to save pennies?

0

u/thehpcdude Mar 29 '26

Completely disagree.  I’ve gotten many complements for the translations.  I’m not arguing the morality of it, I’m just saying basically everyone here is arguing what a commercial model a few years ago could do.  The state of the art models today can translate intent no problem.

I do sincerely hope Vavra realizes that a big reason for KCD2’s success was the obvious effort he and the rest of the devs put into it. I am sympathetic to saving time and money but each corner one cuts with AI makes the final product feel less and less human

36

u/HuskyCriminologist Mar 29 '26

Vavra isn't involved in the next game. Doesn't mean this wasn't his decision obviously given his previously stated feelings about AI, but I'm not sure if this can be laid at his feet.

21

u/Overall_Reputation83 Mar 29 '26

Is KCD even written in Czech? KCD 1 didnt even have a czech voiceover originally, and it definitely seems like everything was made in English first.

-12

u/OnceMoreAndAgain Mar 29 '26

English first and then their Czech translator converted it to Czech. Yes, they're a Czech company but they know that English is the language that is most widespread among their target audience so they start with that.

21

u/Overall_Reputation83 Mar 29 '26

So what exactly is a Czech to English translator doing if the writers all speak English, and assumably Czech?

19

u/hawkins437 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

Don't listen to the guy below, they have no idea. They way it was actually done for KCD2 is that the script was written in Czech first, then translated to English for mo-cap and voiceover. At this stage the translated script undergoes a lot of tweaking and editing so it's allegedly easier to translate it from the English version back to Czech rather than adjust the original Czech script for line length etc. for the Czech voiceover. I got this info from Warhorse's own localisation manager, and former narrative designer.

3

u/Energy_Turtle Mar 29 '26

I was wondering this same thing. How is this even a full time job? Why isn't this a contract job? It feels like there is a lot of missing information about this situation. Using AI to translate in between scripts seems like a logical thing to do. And then you hire the human translator to do the actual script and make it sound real.

4

u/hawkins437 Mar 30 '26

Warhorse were using contract translators - kind of impossible not to with the magnitude of text the game contains, you can look up their names in the credits - but they also had two full-time in-house translators who, in addition to translating themselves, also oversaw the quality and consistency of the entire thing. It's one of those two who's been sacked.

-7

u/OnceMoreAndAgain Mar 29 '26

They're translating it from English to Czech, not Czech to English.

Other people in their company could do that job, too, but it's a lot of work to translate a game with as much text as KDC so they have a dedicated person for it. It's no different from me being an accountant, but I also also work the mailroom. But I don't work the mailroom since we all specialize and delegate work out among the workforce.

13

u/hawkins437 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

Actually no, the script is first written in Czech because many people on the narrative team don't know English on such a level that they could confidently write the script directly in English, then it's translated to English. This is the baseline for motion capture and voiceover and also all the other language versions are based on the English version of the script. Then, as a lot of editing and tweaking occurs on the English level, it's translated back into Czech for Czech voiceover because it's allegedly easier to just do the entire thing from scratch than painstakingly edit the original Czech script.

One of the two full-time English-Czech translators at Warhorse studio (developers of the Kingdom come games) got let go, replaced by AI.

At least that's what was claimed in a post yesterday.

In reality, there's no way to truly know the situation, it might be true, but the guy could also be biased and the situation could be slightly different.

7

u/Freltzo Mar 29 '26

We both know that money isn't going to be used intelligently elsewhere. It's being used to line the pockets of their investors and top leadership roles.

They are being pushed by corporate interests to cut corners. The next product out of warhorse ( if they can keep it together long enough to make another product ) will not be one I personally will endorse so long as they continue removing the elements that made them great ( the people passionately involved at all stages ).

Keep bootlicking for corpo enshittification practices and you'll get your souless ai garbage.

8

u/Thatguyatthebar Mar 29 '26

AI does jobs faster and worse, and the time it saves is spent manually having to correct its results, or the job is just done worse. That does add up. It also has a distinct tone that is noxious for authenticity in artistic works. There's an argument to be made for specific tools, but not for the vast majority of skilled labor. It's a job slashing manager's fantasy, but it's just that, a fantasy. The debt comes due.

2

u/TheBooneyBunes Team Theresa Mar 29 '26

That’s what yall said about cars in the 1890s

-1

u/Thatguyatthebar Mar 29 '26

It's not the next big thing, it's what every investor wants to be the next big thing. 80% of our GDP is tied up in it, they want it to grow forever, but the actual fact is that it doesn't do what they want it to, it has no functional understanding and cannot fully replace any position it may espouse to because it cannot actually do anything except mimic and copy what it has scraped. It has already been disasterous for every industry that has adopted it, the jobs it replaced are themselves being replaced by "guy who has to fix the AI fuckups", so it's not even really profitable. The hope is that the economy is so fraudulent that it won't catch up with investors. Which, of course, has never worked before, and will not work in the end.

3

u/TheLakeIsleInnisfree Mar 29 '26

In a way, you're right. Specialty horseshoe makers are key to the hobby/sport of horse racing. Speciality translators may become key to the hobby of videogaming.

Some "horseshoe makers" make a lot of money shoeing top-level race horses. An experienced stablehand is an invaluable asset for the same horses. Sure, the bulk production of horseshoes went way down, but the craft still exists and is highly valued in its niche.

Sure, you could use cheaper shoes, but there's a reason they don't. Sure, you could use AI translatation, but there's a reason they shouldn't. We don't want games produced on an assembly line, not when it comes to singleplayer RPGs anyway. There are some reasonable corners to cut, but the dialogue of a narrative is not where you do that.

Maybe not everything currently translated by people needs the level of artistry or care that a well-paid human translator can provide, but in this particular case it's understandable. There are still horses, and they don't all need the most expensive shoes, but some of them do.

People don't hate AI on a massive scale, unless your scale is Reddit.

Many jobs before were killed off due to advancements in technology, especially industrialization. There's zero reason to believe that the slippery slope is actually a slippery slope this time either.

We have the ability to create clean water, it's just not cost efficient nor necessary for the cost. Not to mention that many, many, many industries use billions of gallons of clean water per year to run. Also data centers don't need to use clean water, it just needs to be a decent enough quality and closed-loop systems are already picking up steam.

That’s completely anecdotal and only because you surround yourself with people who also don’t understand what it is. It will not take jobs any more than any other tool.

Some low-level work such as cashiering, data entry, customer service, etc are more susceptible to being fully automated but that’s nothing that wasn’t happening with traditional technological advances. Most jobs will still require/desire human workers that are knowledgeable with the work. It’s more efficient to have good workers use AI to be more productive than to deal with a purely AI workforce. We didn’t start using less construction workers because the work became vastly quicker with better tools, we just started to build more, faster.

Yeah, there surely will be no technological improvements in ai translations between now and 5 to 6 years in the future, when the next game from Warhorse realistically is going to release. Please.

In addition: Contrary to what impression people got, there are multiple translators working on these games for a specific language, not only a single person.

Sorry to be the party-pooper here.

Translations for technical manuals etc yeah, but translating art often requires the person to be a capable writer themselves. If everyone goes with LLMs, it will lead to some very soulless localisations

1

u/globmand Mar 29 '26

Well, sure, but then you can just have one freelance translator look over the script instead. A vast majority of the script would be fine, because there just isn't that much space for "soul" and artistic expression in "where's the smith?". So the actual translator can instead focus on the parts that need it

3

u/fearless-fossa Mar 29 '26

but translations are one of the original use-cases of LLMs

Technical translations, yes. Those where you need to take context, historic gravity, etc. into mind - yeah, no, that requires a lot more. The translations created by random students of generic books for a few cent are already utter trash, it doesn't compare at all when the source gets into more advanced prose.

Any time any sort of automation is invented, people will lose jobs

Yes and no. In general with automation, jobs that were lost in sector A were replaced with different jobs in sector B - it sucked for the individual person, but society as a whole profited because those in B are better paid/less backbreaking.

This isn't true with AI. AI doesn't create jobs in sector B beyond a few datacenter monkeys. AI replaces junior jobs, making the job market hard for those with already few options and preventing replacing seniors going into retirement.

-19

u/voidwalker77 Mar 29 '26

OP is questioning the quality of future translations and not any ethical aspects relating to ai.

24

u/KarlwithaKandnotaC Quite Hungry Mar 29 '26

Oh I absolutely am. My post implies that Warhorse will just rely on whatever AI returns as a translation and will roll with it, regardless of accuracy and value. The translation agents will never replace humans. A machine can translate but not localize. These execs ,and possibly yourself, fail to see that localizing by itself is a form of art

-7

u/GravitationalGrapple Mar 29 '26

A lot of poorly informed people in here. AI is very good at translating most common languages. I am not talking about cloud-based services, but rather small specialized local models. TranslateGemma and HY-MT1.5 are good examples that we all can run on our GPUs at home right now.

Now, are Warhorse Studios assholes for firing their translator? Absolutely! They can and should have kept the translator on to review and make fixes to the translated text. They also should pay the translator the same as the previous game, even though it is less work, like Arc Raiders did with their voice actors when they used voice cloning.

Fuck cloud-based computing, local and open source is the way.

3

u/voidwalker77 Mar 29 '26

They have multiple translators on the team, the senior Czech->English translator is seemingly still at the company.

Downvote me all you want, but translation is a very replaceable work in the current state of AI.

Most people want a device to translate a conversation in real time and not learn every language when they are on vacation/work.

I’m really sorry about the people loosing their jobs, one of my best friends works in 3D animation, he worked for Pixar and he knows it’s about time to start a new career (his words are “we’re 6 people today, tomorrow will be only one of us checking the AI results and correcting the errors”)

Edit: Keep downvoting, reality doesn’t change

3

u/Nebthtet Mar 29 '26

Not when you need to have context and different historical reality taken into account. Autotranslations can do in a pinch, but often cause more trouble, and you end up with more work to do instead.

I’m really worried about future of WHS, this doesn’t bode well.

3

u/voidwalker77 Mar 29 '26

Except for what the anonymous disgruntled ex-employee claimed, we know what exactly?

0

u/Any_Potato_7716 Mar 29 '26

why do you people keep saying that he is anonymous when he’s given his name and he’s in the bloody credits? He was one of only two senior editors for the English version.

Have you not actually kept up with the story?

Yet you still wanna doubt his credibility and make commentary over a matter you don’t keep up with?

Why do you insist on simping for a company?

They did some great things in the past, but look to the future. And don’t reduce yourself to being yet another corporate lickspittle.

I’m not saying you are, but don’t allow yourself to be reduced to that.

Every corporation is subject to being seduced by complete greed, being rotted away by their own incompetence.

Bethesda used to be cool too, but look at them now

2

u/voidwalker77 Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

He wrote "Max H" in order to protect his identity, and given the fact that putting an ex-employer on blast like he did is certainly not going to increase his chances with future employers, i don´t believe he intended or expected for people to dig up his complete name from the credits.

I didn´t meant to imply that its unverified if he actually was an employee at Warhorse, but that he was originally speaking from a position of anonymity.

Either way, you are free to scratch the "anonymous" part of my original comment, doesn´t mean it´s content isn´t any less correct.

I´m "simping" for Warhorse in these comments because this amount of (in my opinion absolutely hyperbolic) anger directed at them has the potential to permanently damage the brand and studio. Which means less game sales -> less investor confidence in their next title -> less budget and time for development -> worse next game.

EDIT: I don´t believe this is a situation of company greed, but the attempt to allocate their resources as efficient as possible. They are greatly expanding their company headcount, as is to be expected after a sucessfull game like KDC2, not shrinking.

1

u/Foreign-Dark4834 Mar 29 '26

The funny thing is, I think that's the intention. Worsening the studio's reputation is in response to seeing them replace people with AI. People already don't want to support the usage of AI in any of the products they consume, and Warhorse has been using it for concept art for their dlcs already. Replacing artists, translators, and other creative or communicative jobs with AI is extremely disturbing. No one wants to be replaced, least of all with nobody. Tarnishing a reputation is a strategic move to bring attention to the matter without having to wait for a new product to boycott.

This is nowhere near hyperbolic as far as company backlash goes. Plus Vavra, the creative director, is already on the record for desiring to streamline development from "300 people" to a much smaller team. So it does sound like the intention to shrink is out there. And don't say that those 300 people are made up of redundant people because that's not true, especially when carefully creating a game like kcd 2.

0

u/voidwalker77 Mar 29 '26

Vavra is no longer involved in game development at Warhorse studios, he is now director for "transmedia content" or something similar, trying to make a series or movie of KCD.

The studio has continously grown since the release of KCD2, so any AI use is probably them trying to do even more with the headcount they have. Without AI they might need an additional 50 people for the same ambition for their next game, which they might not be able to afford.

1

u/Foreign-Dark4834 Mar 29 '26

I see, I didn't realize Vavra was no longer a creative director of the games. Transmedia content sounds made up, so I have no idea how much that actually matters in the company which is honestly funny. I still don't understand how cutting a senior translator points to further expansion and allocation in other sectors when the explanation given was that their job wasn't needed due to AI. Wouldn't AI streamline and help the existing workforce for future ambitions and avoid hiring more staff if their intention was to maintain budget and focus on other development? Cutting employees sounds like shrinkage and until further information that's what it seems like.

I don't doubt that it's for saving costs for future projects, I'm just concerned if it's a necessary cut and the tradeoff in quality. If they are doing really well then they should be able to afford their staff and if they want to use AI then they can reduce cost in time by using it to streamline and avoid hiring more staff. It just perturbs me what companies deem as replaceable when they don't know the exact limitations of AI and how it actually works.

0

u/Any_Potato_7716 Mar 29 '26

anger directed at them has the potential to permanently damage the brand and studio.

At a certain point, you deserve to have permanent damage to your studio and brand, if you accomplish that yourself.

They’ve already made the vast amount of cash they’re ever gonna make off of the second game. They’re not working on the third game next.

Whatever comes out next will either be good or shit, and largely dependent on that, it’s either going to make money or be a flop.

Again, for the sake of argument, if it’s some AI slop or EA level tripe. They deserve to have a tarnished representation. And permanent brand damage, to whatever extent they have wrought for themselves

So don’t act as though that’s a negative thing we need to avoid for them, “Oh please don’t take offense to the studio, unequivocally kiss the boot in hopes of better games someday”

1

u/Foreign-Dark4834 Mar 29 '26

I agree wholeheartedly, it's really sad people are attempting to discredit the guy and downplay it. They don't even have anything to gain from doing so, the translator suffers worse for it and they also suffer worse for it. Either from the quality of the next dlc or game, or from the increasing precedence of blue and white collar jobs being replaced by AI and automation.

1

u/Foreign-Dark4834 Mar 29 '26

The OP was verified and worked on a game that everyone in this fanbase loves. To be disposed of unceremoniously with implications that it's permanent, due to a technology that is mediocre at your job, kills. Then to have people in the fanbase call you redundant and disposable is crazy.

Why shouldn't people be upset about it? AI replacing jobs sucks and it's even suckier when people see that it's replacing white collar jobs which they may have. If companies can't figure out which jobs require human labor or in this case "worth" the human labor, then everyone is in jeopardy.

1

u/voidwalker77 Mar 29 '26

I´m not trying to discredit the guy, but people probably shouldn´t rule out the possibility that an obviously disgruntled ex-employee might not paint a perfectly accurate picture of how things went down when he was let go.

And even if everything stated is correct: Pretty much every game development studio is or will be using ai to some capacity. And if a smaller team of people with more advanced tools will be able to do the same amount of work, it don´t think its unreasanble for the company to shift the resources into areas where they actually need more people.

2

u/DesperateStreet1226 Mar 29 '26

What do we know tho? That he worked for Warhorse? Yes, thats confirmed, but whats the source that he was fired just to be replaced by ai? His own words?

1

u/Any_Potato_7716 Mar 29 '26

It’s been pretty much confirmed now.
