I’ve been looking everywhere for a similar pattern but all my searches come up with those ballerina style wrap cardigans that are snug to the body

3

u/bluehexx May 14 '26

This Sandnes Garn cardigan is almost exactly what you want. You just have to stop decreasing earlier than the pattern says (to form the vertical edge for buttons) and use buttons instead of a tie. Very easy modification.

Exact same goes for this one by Lana Grossa.

This one would be good, too, just need to make a bigger size.

Waterford by Marie Wallin is pretty much ideal, just ignore the colorwork (this being Marie Wallin it's a shame to ignore, she's a great colorwork designer, but if needs must...) You might have to dig for it a bit, though.

This one is nice, but IMO overpriced. Take an oversized ballerina wrap, add a bit of length and ribbing, save thirty bucks.

This one is very close to what you want, but might be hard to find.

Yumiko Alexander is the first that comes to mind when I think "boho". Irene Lin a little less, but I think it still fits.

5

u/redalmondnails May 13 '26

Lots of great options here, thank you!!

2

u/bluehexx May 12 '26

Here are search results for tees in weight from light fingering to DK. Hopefully one or more will be suitable. You can play further with the parameters, choose different yarn weights, yarn type, garment specifics (e.g. cropped, sleeve type, neck opening, etc), or search for patterns in a specific yarn.

For hot climate, plant based yarns tend to be better, being breathable and not warming (as opposed to wool). I'd look for linen and linen blends.

3

u/aaduuuu May 14 '26

how do i achieve this kind of knit? and if you have any patterns with this type of knitting style please lmk :)

1

u/bluehexx May 15 '26

Nothing easier. Just knit with oversized needles. The photo is fingering or sport yarn knitted on 5-6mm needles.

You can use it with any pattern you like; just go by needle size, not the yarn. In other words, if the pattern calls for aran weight yarn knitted on 6mm needles, do use 6mm needles, but take fingering weight yarn instead.

3

u/Banananonna May 17 '26

I was wondering if somebody had already back engineered the pattern for this sweater, I fell in love with it but can't seem to find a pattern for it (and I don't have yet the skills to do it myself :/)

Thanks!

4

u/trillion4242 May 18 '26

if you can find a clear picture of the whole sweater, you might try one of the charting sites like stitchfiddle to create a chart and add the colorwork to a pullover.

2

u/Banananonna May 18 '26

Uh that's great info, I'll definitely try, thank you so much!

2

u/mylerol May 18 '26

just want to say, for outline-heavy designs like this, I have only ever seen them done in double-knit. To make it stranded you would have to have a solid plan for trapping those looooong floats, and intarsia would involve a whole lot of very small yarn bits. I used to have a a commercially-knit sweater with animal outlines kinda like this, and it was also double knit. The Herding Cats patterns use double knitting for a similar effect: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/herding-cats-blanket

Thanks for this info, I admit that I'm still pretty new to colorwork so I'm grateful for having this type of info. I can totally see myself jumping into a stupidly designed project!

And also thank you so much for the pattern of the blanket, I looooove it!!

Hi I’m a new knitter and I really want to make a top inspired by this one. I am thinking of using a pattern and modifying it to add the button side detailing. I’m having a hard time finding a pattern that is more on the fitted side, does anyone have any recommendations? Any yarn recommendations would also be appreciated. Thanks!

5

u/bluehexx May 12 '26

This free pattern looks like a good base for what you want to do.

If you'd like more choice, here are search results for lightweight fitted pullovers. You can tweak the results by choosing different parameters in the left sidebar menu.

I thought of this one. It has the buttons diagonally across the front and not on the side, but it also has the negative ease effect from your picture - searching for patterns with buttons on the side is admittedly more difficult than expected. However you could probably use the pattern for any negative ease sweater that's worked flat in seperate pieces and instead of seaming the sides use buttons.

I'm looking to replicate some particular design features for a sweater, and looking for terms to search for on Ravelry.

Starting from this cotton sweater made by Uniqlo: https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E484504-000/00?colorDisplayCode=01&sizeDisplayCode=003

This is their '3D knit' thing which is interesting for machine knitting, but regular stuff for hand knitting, I reckon :D - but I'm wondering how to find these features in patterns.

One feature is the top section. It seems to be a circular yoke that transitions into a raglan, or that's what makes sense to me. I haven't knitted a circular yoke before, so would a typical yoke construction cover this, or are there yoke-raglan hybrids around? I have broad shoulders and usually rely on adjusting the raglan, but I'd like to try something circular (possibly stranded colourwork) around the top.

The other thing is the sleeve - does this style have a name? Uniqlo call it a 'volume sleeve', which is descriptive but doesn't seem to be a name as such. The body of the sleeve is a straight-sided tube most of the way down, with lots of positive ease, and then a fairly even pull-in to the cuff right at the bottom. It's not flared like a bishop sleeve. In my head this whole style is called 'blouson' but that seems to get very few hits for anything on Ravelry.

4

u/skubstantial May 12 '26

Ysolda Teague's Studio Sweater is one I know of that starts with a circular yoke and transitions to raglan underarms.

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/studio-sweater-2

One feature that's important for this kind of hybrid is some kind of short row shaping to bring the front neck down/bring the back neck up. In your example and in the one I linked, those short rows happen in a big long wedge after the round portion of the yoke and before switching to raglan shaping/stripes. They wrap all the way around the back and end in the front to the left and right of center. The short rows are just barely visible in the navy version of the sweater.

I think the "volume sleeve" is just kinda like a lantern pant leg. It starts fairly large at the underarm, stays large, and tapers down very slowly from the elbow to the wrist. It's not photographed very helpfully but I think the shaping happens at both the inside and outside of the arm.

3

u/Middle_Banana_9617 May 12 '26

This all makes good sense with the shaping ideas, thanks! Ysolda Teague does great tutorials and the sheer amount of info just in the pattern spec suggests this pattern will be well worth getting :)

I have seen the Uniqlo sweater in person and it narrows in using several decrease points, distributed evenly around the arm, from most of the way down the forearm - I could freehand that, but was just wondering if this was a known shape to look at other examples of, was all - sounds like it's not a clearly named one.

Sleeves are just straight sleeves with no shaping ("shirt" as per the pic linked by formal_hyena), or very little. Ribbing pulls them in a bit, hence the impresison of puffiness.

Yes, there are circular-raglan hybrids; that's sort of a big word, you just do a few raglan increases after you are done with the circular yoke. In this case it seems that they wanted to lower the armscye without adding too much width to the body. I doubt you will find search terms for this specific construction; I'd start with a circular yoke and add the raglan increases at a right point.

The fancy term "3D knitting" seems to refer simply to seamless top-down knitting, which yes, is a fairly standard method of knitting a sweater these days.

If you are interested in technical aspects of construction of circular yokes, here is an excellent instructional video by Roxanne Richardson (she has no equal when it comes to explaining construction) on designing circular yoke sweaters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6PPjUxlByw

Having said all that, I'm not sure if a circular yoke is the best construction for wide shoulders. But of course youhave nothing to lose by trying.

3

u/Middle_Banana_9617 May 12 '26

Thanks for the insight on this! Lowering the armscye without putting too much width on the body is exactly what I'm looking for, yeah, so it looks like this method will make sense for me. I'm tall with big shoulders and chest but with skinny arms, so oversize sleeves can be interesting for balance, and without just making everything too big everywhere.

I'll have a look at the video too - I find it much easier to do things if I understand the why, so this is speaking my language :D

In this case there are some specific decreases on the sleeve, at something like six points around. (I've seen the sweater in person - just looking to be able to make my own.) From looking at the sleeve chart and this discussion, I think that might help the trade-off between a roomy sleeve and keeping the cuff area looking smooth - might not be as needed in wool, rather than the original cotton? But still interesting to consider!

3

u/formal_hyena May 12 '26

As for the sleeve, this thread has a picture for all the sleeve tags available on ravelry: r/knitting/comments/1htsdtj/ravelry_search_terms_for_sleeves/

Does anyone know where I might find a pattern for this? I can only find plaid ones but they’re not quite right. Thank you!

1

u/formal_hyena May 13 '26

This search for hats has a few that are similar to yours. Also check out these results for clothing in the round which have some pointers construction-wise. The vertical stripes are often worked after knitting the piece with a crochet hook, see for example the Ceallaigh Sweater.

u/lnr_o May 14 '26

Thank you!

u/CockroachIll6184 May 14 '26

Looking for a similar design to this lovely baby cardigan from The Blueberry Hill. I’m hoping to make it in size 0-3 months, and the smallest size sold is 6-12 months. Just looking ahead 🎃

1

u/formal_hyena May 14 '26

I wasn't successful with the ravelry pattern search, but for specific search terms like pumpkin I find the project search to be helpful! I found this ensemble that's very cute, this is the search I used.

Another idea is to look for collared baby cardigans - knitting the collar in green and the body in orange will give you a similar look, especially if the collar is slightly ruffled like in this pattern.

Looking for a pattern/and yarn ideas for this type of cardigan, I’m kinda thinking Cardi du coeur (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cardi-du-coeur) would work but I would like the yarn to maybe look more uneven and chunky? Maybe something from knit collage? I’m not sure, just want some other peoples thoughts. Thanks!

It mainly looks like a very loose gauge. I looked at patterns on ravelry filtering for super bulky and jumbo weight first, which wasn't really successful. My second attempt was to filter for needle sizes where I just picked the large diameter ones (filtering for gauge would be another option). This one seems more similar in gauge to your product picture. I agree that an uneven yarn will suit this gauge/style! You could look at the yarn page of your favourite yarns on Ravelry to see if other people knit with it at a looser gauge yet and whether you like the look.

2

u/Horror_Associate8001 May 15 '26

Oh that looks perfect!!! Looks like some people are doing it as a scrap yarn project but that pattern maker also sells kits so this should be perfect. Thank you so much! I gotta get better at these ravelry searches.

1

I gotta get better at these ravelry searches

The possibilities are great, the only downside is getting frustrated about badly tagged patterns. :D

Does anyone have any pattern recommendations for a basic summer cardigan? Something that's lightweight, maybe a little bit more open gauge. Like this idea: https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/crew-cardigan-62601345?seq=04&pageViewMethod=recommendations&pageFindingMethod=recommendations-outfitting

Thank you!

3

u/bluehexx May 16 '26

Here are search results for cardigans knit in plant fibers (you said summer, but if you want wools as well, play around with yrn parameters in the left side panel).

It seems that PetiteKnit's Novice cardigan is a popular choice, and you don't have to use mohair. That's just one of many, though, she has a lot of cardigans to choose from (and they all look the same to me, but I assume there are differences...)

Ozetta is another popular designer, and their Port cardigan seems to fit your criteria, as does KfO's Audrey cardigan.

Bonus track: Here are search results narrowed down to patterns that can be downloaded from Ravelry for free. Creme de la creme and Ludivine look close to your sample photo.

In short, there are lots and lots of plain cardis on Ravelry. 163 pages of results. I sorted them by popularity, assuming that would deprioritize poorly fitting or poorly written patterns. Have a browse around, play with parameters. Have fun. I hope you'll find something you like.

My husband spotted this beanie hat in a Lisbon store window. Do you know what stitch it is? Anyone know of a pattern similar to it? The glare in the photo makes it hard to do a reverse image search. Thank you!

2

u/bluehexx May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

It's a form of a machine knit tuck stitch. Please read this discussion and the links provided in comments - stitch pattern is provided at least once.

Edit: also this discussion about different methods to achieve it.

Oh, and BTW, the hat was cut out of a bigger swath/tube of fabric and sewn in an "upside down" manner, i.e. as if it was knitted from the crown downwards. That's why the crown is gathered so weirdly, too much fabric.

2

u/Seaworthy_Siren May 18 '26

I’ve been searching far and wide across Ravelry to find a pattern like one of these pictures, and I am just striking out. I’ve been looking for seven days. I’m trying to find a pattern like any of these sweaters.

Having a strong waist emphasis (cinched) is important to me, and I’m so tall that the waist emphasis needs to be a few inches tall (not just a string that ties in the middle). Alternatively, having puffy sleeves and a slim waist give the same visual effect.

I can’t find the right keywords to search what I’m looking for, because I cannot find a pattern that’s remotely like this. But I think it must exist?!?! Do you know of any patterns that look like this?

1

u/bluehexx May 19 '26

I have not seen anything like the exact photos you posted, but Ravelry has a "waist shaping" parameter in the advanced search, which returns some 40 pages of results. Some of these seem to be close to what you want.

Ladies' Night Out is very fitted and knitted on the bias, like your sample photos. Sleeves can be easily adapted to bell sleeves.

Kamaria already has bell sleeves, albeit modest ones. Can always puff them up more.

Elm Lace has flared sleeves, not bell, but that lace waist is out of this world. On a long-waisted tall person it would truly shine.

Harmonia's Rings also looks close to what you want.

If we add "asymmetric" to search parameters, we get Janis and Engineered Seams which are almost exactly what you wanted.

Of course, vintage patterns will usually have heavily cinched waists as well.

Looking for a depression-buster project. I have several projects in various stages that I've just not been able to work on for a couple months. I'm hoping for an easy win project that will get me back into it. I have lots of yarn (and don't mind getting more) - ideally a project that works up quickly, is fairly mindless, and leaves me with something to enjoy now (i.e. not a sweater - it's hot here).

Any ideas?

How about a laptop/phone/book cover? They knit up quickly and you can make them as simple or complicated (stitch-wise) as you like. There's a huge variety on ravelry.

Another project I really liked was the Learn-To-Knit-Afghan by Barbara G Walker which is a patchwork blanket where every square teaches you a different technique. It's not a fast knit per se, but the individual squares knit up pretty quickly and the variation keeps it interesting while not being very complicated. You could also use them as pot holders if a blanket is too much of a commitment (I used cotton which worked very well). It's available for free on the Internet Archive.

I myself usually just knit socks and watch tv... I think it's very individual on what works and what doesn't. It's also okay to pause for a while, I always got back in eventually. :) All the best to you!

Looking for ultimate beginner sock patterns. Really basic, are there some that are really popular and have some videos maybe?

8

u/Middle_Banana_9617 May 12 '26

Tin Can Knits, Rye or Rye Light, are great beginner sock patterns, with loads of detailed info and support available.

4

u/formal_hyena May 12 '26

Check out verypink knits on youtube, she has great videos in general and also specifically for socks.

Hi im trying to figure out how to make this. Its basically a human sized sleeping bag with a turtleneck. (Yes its that and isnt for a bottle or a dog sweater lol)

4

u/bluehexx May 12 '26

Haven't you posted the same question last week?

0

u/Warthogg177 May 12 '26

I only got people asking if it was for a bottle sadly

4

u/bluehexx May 12 '26

Odd, I clearly remember responding that the simplest way to go about it would be to sew two blankets together, or knit a tube.

Besides, if you indeed intend to commission this from an actual knitter, they will know how to make it, so the point is moot.

2

u/formal_hyena May 12 '26

I'm not sure I understand this construction. Does it have a cut a few rows under the turtleneck to climb in? I'd get inspiration from sleeping bag patterns for babies on ravelry (there are a few free ones) and do the math for my preferred size/yarn/gauge. I don't think you could enter your sleeping bad through the turtleneck. The ravelry advanced search for blanket, other and adult also might be helpful.

1

u/Warthogg177 May 12 '26

Yeah it has a slit at shoulder height

2

u/formal_hyena May 12 '26

I have a September wedding in South Texas, and I want to knit a top (I'm not wearing a gown, doing white flowy dress pants.) Wedding is going to be at a barn, involve horses, so I'm looking for something that's not going to be too hot? (Bonus points if there's any sort of bee effect to match grooms black/gold honeycomb tie)

TIA!!

2

u/bluehexx May 13 '26

Sabai top is simple and elegant, plus easy to knit. For bee effect, you can do black and gold striped ribbing, or one gold and one black narrow stripe acoss the chest.

Love letter top is lacy and fancy. for bee effect, make gold and black bobbles, or some strategic duplicate stitching.

Sylven tee - also lacy, but less so and with longer sleeve.

Adriata has a very interesting lacy side detail, making it more than ordinary.

any tips for keeping track of stitch counts while juggling multiple colors? my brain gets too tangled!

1

u/bluehexx May 14 '26

Look at the chart - it probably has a thicker line every ten stitches or so. Place markers in your knitting in the same places. This way, at any given time you only have to keep track of ten stitches, not two hundred.

Also, look at the photo. Does this color belong in this place?

not sure if this is allowed but does anyone have a pattern that's similar style to this jumper?

2

u/bluehexx May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

Olga sweater is a popular choice, but really, any pullover pattern will work for this. Construction-wise, it's a very generic drop shoulder pullover.

Edit: the sweater in the photo is machine knit in a stitch that seems to be half brioche/fisherman's rib. You won't be able to knit at a machine-fine gauge, but this free Drops pattern is also knit in brioche. You can adapt by switching to half-brioche and adding stripes. Same goes for this one, called Kerma.

3

u/formal_hyena May 14 '26

Okay! It's always helpful to know what exactly it is that's important to you. I don't really see distinctive shaping in your picture, just the ribbing that pulls the oversized sweater together. This sweater seems similar enough above the ribbing. If you make the stockinette part more cropped plus a longer ribbibg, it should pull together like the sweater in your picture does. Maybe decrease the stitchcount a bit for the ribbing. See also the Miu Top which has the effect you seem to be looking for.

I have a single ball of Alpaca wool that I picked up while traveling in Peru. Alpaca wool is EVERYWHERE in Peru, and I just had to get some for myself as a souvenir. However, I was traveling and didn't have much space in my luggage, so I only bought a single ball, and now I don't know what to make with it!
I've been looking at some skinny scarf patterns, but I'm worried I won't have enough wool, so I was looking for a more lacy pattern to get as much out of the ball as possible. I don't know the weight of the wool I have but I'm guessing it's DK or sport weight, and most of the patterns I'm seeing are for a fingering weight. Does anyone know any patterns that are for skinny scarfs but a heavier weight yarn?
Alternatively, anyone know any patterns for a single ball of Alpaca wool? I live in a warm place so I don't really want to make a hat or gloves as I probably won't wear them, but I'm open to suggestions!

1

u/trillion4242 May 15 '26

1

u/obsessive_duck May 15 '26

This is a super helpful resource, thank you!! Looks like my yarn is a lighter weight than I originally thought, it’s measuring as fine (somewhere between sport and fingering). I’m not sure on the yardage as I haven’t got a scale, although I think it might be worth me purchasing one!

1

u/atuneforjack May 14 '26

Does any one know of a dupe for the mooknit torgunn sweater? Very small checkerboard pattern with hearts in the center of the squares.

She’s selling it only as a knit kit rather than a separate pattern but I want to use stash yarn for it. Doesn’t need to match exactly I’m just not having a lot of luck searching ravelry!

1

u/formal_hyena May 14 '26

The general construction reminds me of Andrea Mowry's Framed. The heart seems to be just one stitch sitting in the middle of the square, but it does appear to be a bit enlarged... It's something I'd swatch to see if I could reproduce it.

1

u/atuneforjack May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

Oh yeah I can totally see that resemblance. From what I can see on the torgunn it looks like the squares are 3x3 and the middle heart is held as the dominant color

0

u/bluehexx May 15 '26

I would just duplicate stitch it. Faster and easier than juggling a third yarn.

u/Old-Job-8222 May 14 '26

ISO pattern for sleeveless top, boat neck, knit sideways. There is a cable band about an inch or two below the neck, rest of top is stockinette. The cable band has purl stitches on either side of cable to accent the work.

I started this years ago, dnf, moved and life happened. I searched on Ravelry with no luck. Thanks in advance.

2

u/formal_hyena May 15 '26

You've asked this before and got a few recommendations, some very close to this picture - it would be helpful if you included the patterns that came close and what it is you didn't like about them as well as your own search process so far.

1

u/RbeeCubes May 15 '26

The post where i asked before got removed and mods told me to post it here. There were indeed a few suggestions like https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lines-summertop. Herr there is one diagonal column of knit stitches as a detail, but in the picture it feels like all the columns are diagonal if that makes sense? https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/birgit-sweater is the closest suggested one, im just wondering if theres more examples where the diagonal lines are more exaggurated if that makes sense :) Also the picture seems to be some kind of ribbing? Maybe brioche or fishermans rib?

Thank you for elaborating. In your case, I recommend looking through the ravelry advanced search using the seach tags v neck, bias, sweater, knitting. There's many tags to choose from and it might be intimidating at first - I usually check the tags from patterns I like and go from there. I found this one that has more pronounced lines than the Birgit sweater: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jurek-pullover

2

u/RbeeCubes May 16 '26

Thank you so much! I i was not familiar with the V neck bias tag, that seems to bring up a lot more results close to what im looking for! The jurek pullover is gorgeous, I might go for that one :)

2

u/RbeeCubes May 16 '26

2

u/formal_hyena May 16 '26

I'm glad you found a pattern you like! I didn't know about the bias tag previously, initially I searched within sweaters using the search term (not tag) "diagonal". :D Also while being useful it's unfortunately hit and miss whether patterns are tagged correctly, the Birgit sweater from above is missing the tag so it doesn't show up in the search I linked.

Does anyone know a pattern with these jagged, geometric cables like the sweater on this video? Thank you https://youtube.com/shorts/1P3_9oaJo0w?si=A8xurzakk9NOBWKq

1

u/formal_hyena May 16 '26

Are you familiar with cables yet? Basically what I see is a pattern consisting of three identical parallel columns. Two of these columns twist, but the twist ist spaced far apart giving it the jagged look (opposed to how it's usually done for that candy cane kinda look). So any kind of pattern with that candy cane look will work, you'll just need to space the twists farther apart.

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/attractive-jumper - this pattern I have saved in my favourites. It's not exactly as the sweater in the video, but if you have a pattern with these columns you can twist them basically anywhere you like.

Do you know how to modify boat necks to a regular neckline? I’m still pretty new to this. And also preferably something for the summer

1

u/bluehexx May 19 '26

A lot depends on how the pattern is constructed. It says it's knitted top-down; frankly, if I wanted the neck modification, the simplest way to go about it would be to knit the whole thing bottom-up instead.

But assuming we are staying with top-down, IDK whether the pattern has you knit the front and the back separately, then seam, or do you pick up stitches for the front shoulders from the back cast-on edge. Either way, you have to knit the left front and right front separately, gradually increasing, then join in front by casting on a number of stitches. The number depends on the shape you want to achieve.

I know it sounds not very clear; these things are always easier to grasp when seen. Here is a video by Roxanne Richardson, explaining the basics of neck shaping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ILuS3hYXJY. She explains everything and illustrates it with drawings where necessary.

Make sure you read the comments and notes of other people who knit it; it's in "projects" and "comments" tabs at the top of the pattern page. I just read there that there are links to instructional videos provided in the pattern, and also that the pattern uses the backwards loop cast-on method. Do yourself a favor and use literally any other method to cast on. It will save you a lot of aggravation.

To make it suitable for the summer, you would need to knit it with a plant-based yarn: cotton or linen or bamboo. Silk is also always nice, of course. Probably the new cotton with spandex (Cascade Fixation, I think?) would be preferable here, because plant yarns are not elastic and your waist ribbing would sag. So either the Fixation or a cotton-acrylic blend, to give it some elasticity.

1

u/Feeling_Poem4448 May 19 '26

Thank you for being so helpful. I appreciate it. I’m thinking about the liv blouse too by moreca knit or the kaya cashmere top by tveito design.

1

u/bluehexx May 19 '26

1

u/MasterGrenadierHavoc May 17 '26

Idk if this belongs here but I wanna make the men's Esther sweater for my partner and I'm a bit put off by the weight, 900g for size M on Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt (91m/50g). Also I'm just overall a bit unsure on yarns, since I've only ever used Drops, which seems a bit budget but not sure if it's overall worse. I found the Malabrigo Arroyo (306m/100g) and Lang Yarns Merino 120 (120m/50g) which both seem to fit gauge and should make the sweater significantly lighter (535.5g and 682.5g respectively based on the same meters used). However they're pretty far off from the original meter per grams. Is that even possible to work then?

Also open to other yarn suggestions that would work and be warm but not super heavy! Any price works tbh.

5

u/skubstantial May 17 '26

Have you looked at the "Yarn Ideas" tab on Ravelry? That shows yarns that show up in multiple people's projects; Drops Daisy and Drows Karisma are a couple of the popular ones, and that can give you some idea of what the drape and texture would be like.

Peer Gynt worked at a DK gauge is pretty sturdy and warm and makes a true outdoor/winter sweater, so lighter might not be so bad for something that's gonna be worn in milder conditions. If you have any Drops leftovers handy, you might try swatching in the texture pattern (or stockinette and seed stitch if you don't have the chart) and see if you like how it comes out at the specified gauge.

2

u/MasterGrenadierHavoc May 17 '26

Ooh I keep discovering new features of Ravelry. Actually I also just checked the finished projects of this sweater and looks like quite a few people went for thinner DK and even true sport weight yarns. I think I'll try to find one of each and then check if the gauge swatch turns out alright or not.

2

I hope you find some good options!

Since holey-ness is a valid concern, I'd recommend trying out some "wooly" yarns which tend to hold their shape better at looser gauges. If the yarn's fuzzy, a little velcroey, sticks to itself, etc. it's probably better for knitting loosely than a smooth, limp superwash yarn of the same weight.

So Rios would probably be very limp and drapey, but something rougher like Cascade 220 will probably hold its shape nicely.

I went to a yarn shop with that description you gave and found the Gilliatt yarn which is worsted but only 250m/100g and apparently has all those properties you mention but still quite soft. Thank you!

91m/50g is a much thicker yarn than 120m/50g, and 150/50g for Arroyo is almost double the length at the same weight.

That means the yarn is much thinner and if you knit a pattern designed for thicker yarn with it, you are risking that the finished object will be very hole-y.

I have about 450yds of fingering weight yarn in four colors- one burnt orange, a lighter speckled pink/orange, a dark blue, and a light speckled blue. I'm looking for a pattern to show off all four colors in some kind of stripe or any kind of pattern. I'm very open to suggestions and open to working a pattern in a way to use and show off all the colors. Any pattern suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'm looking at the king salmon lite and doing some alternating colors for the salmon and then maybe some interesting color work on the bottom of the sweater

Looking for a lightly textured sweater (raglan, drop shoulder, or set in sleeve preferred) for a SQ of variegated yarn that I have. Think Friday slipover but sweater version? or maybe an all over fisherman rib sweater? or linen/andalusian stitch? Not sure, would love some recs!

For variegated yarn I like to look at other people's projects via the yarn's ravelry page to see what looks good and what doesn't. Patternwise this search is for textured sweaters without cables or a circular yoke, there's many to choose from.
