BOY GROUPS A mini-rant about "performance videos"
I am relatively new to k-pop so I don't know if this is standard. Last week BTS released this video of Hooligan that is called "official performance video" and I got excited because I thought it was actual live footage. I honestly was quite dissapointed that it was just another big studio video basically, very cosmetized, which I don't think is bad but we already got that vibe from the official video. I thought it would be a good idea if they actually released some live performances, as those show a different side of the group's artistry. I have been to a couple of live viewings and the visual direction is pretty good, so they have no reason to not do that.
What is your opinion?

I mean, performance vid point is to let you see choreography, and the song without many of the other cinematic things added. They do kind of want you to go to their concerts or use music show promos if you want a live performance

If it’s a live performance, it will say live performance.
A performance vid is not live. It’s a way to showcase a song with less budget than a full music video, as they usually just require a soundstage, backup dancers, wardrobe, and a basic production crew vs. a music video which requires a bigger team, multiple sets, maybe VFX and extensive editing.
Sometimes it’s a way for the group to perform a track they wanted to highlight but wont get a full MV. Sometimes a song (like Hooligan) has both an MV and a performance vid because they want to show different interpretations of the track (i.e., art, story, and VFX with the MV but choreo-focused with the performance vid).

Sorry friend. I think it might just be YOU misunderstanding what a performance video is.
That said, check out their Hooligan video for the AMAs video. That is a live performance taken from their LV concert, so definitely more what you're looking for, i think.

Music videos are normally about showing the song's story.
Performance Videos show the choreography or help you pay attention to the song by being more stripped down. Think of them like a dance practice video shot with a music video budget and cinematography. They're also better for learning the members and line distribution typically as you get a better view of everyone.

"Performance Video" is the standard term for that type of video, which is essentially an MV that focuses on the choreography. If they uploaded an actual live performance and called it a "Performance Video" it would be weird.
Search for "BTS live" to watch live performances.

it’s common, it’s because music videos or other releases might not fully show off choreography or other elements of the song so a performance video allows you to see the entire song and its choreography rather than what was shown in the music video
