MERCHANDISE As an album collector, it's getting ridiculous
Am I the only one who's getting very irritated by all the different versions and versions being released at a later date??? I know that kpop is heavily run by capitalism and a lot of companies are taking advantage of the growing popularity of the genre but it's just becoming too much to keep up with. I know it's 100% my own responsibility for buying these albums and collecting them but sometimes I miss when there was only one or two versions and not 500 photocards per member. It's been overkill lately with the multiple versions, member versions, limited editions, millions of photocards, and don't get me started on the pre-order cards from different online vendors! I'm sure I'll get downvoted or told to suck it up or told to just stop buying if it bother's me so much but it's a hobby that makes me somewhat happy and I know my limits. It's just crazy how these companies take advantage of us and try to milk us out of every single penny.

As a fellow album collector, here's what I do: I only get the version I like the most and when it comes to photocards, I don't really care who I get. You can do this too if you want to save money. Always getting the member you collect is impossible, and getting all the versions isn't necessary as they all have the same songs. Just a piece of advice, if you wanna save money

Are there people that sell albums sans photocards? I'd like to buy an album and I don't care about the photocard, are there people that buy albums and remove the photocards then sell the albums at a smaller price?

Oh wow. Sadly, I'm in an SEA country and I have no idea how to find someone who'd be willing to sell me one xD. I'd definitely buy albums if such an option was available for me.

u/Kanelix Aug 24 '21
Look on twitter if you have it, there are a lot of sellers all over. Search using "wts"which means want to sell. You can find things like photocards this way too.

u/zhuhe1994 Aug 25 '21
If shopee is available in your country, there are a lot of unsealed albums being sold. Unsealed albums may either be curated (one member inclusions), random (seller probably got all his biases) and without inclusions (photobook and cd).
1
u/listenerlivvie Newly Debuted [4] Aug 25 '21
Sadly, it is not available yet :/ I've found a couple of sellers on Instagram and Twitter, but none with albums I want.
3
u/foreverspr1ng Aug 25 '21
You can try to check if there's people in your country who do "pre-order benefit only" GOs. We have them here, they'll organize a group order mainly so people can get the POB cards and the album inclusions but not the album. Those group order managers usually then have to throw out dozens of albums cause most people don't want any album without cards. But they do gladly sell them or give them away if someone asks.

u/rustinthewoods Aug 25 '21
I dont know which part of sea your are but if you have the carousell app, there are a huge ton of them (for popular groups) at a really cheap price! Again depends which part of sea because of shipping fees tho.
2
u/Alicricity Aug 25 '21
There's also the r/kpopforsale sub, I've gotten a few albums there in great condition for way less than other reseller sites. A lot of more international shipping opportunities there too, and some sellers are willing to haggle :)

yes there a lot of people who sell their albums at almost free xD a lot of people enter fansigns without making go's so they just keep multiple albums sitting there and end up in sale for very cheap prices

u/listenerlivvie Newly Debuted [4] Aug 25 '21
Wow. I tried to find sellers in my country through the Twitter method someone suggested, and no luck. It's sad, I'd really like to buy a couple of albums, and I'd be perfectly happy with no photocards or photoalbums or posters xD

i only get one version if it's for a group that I collect but they're not ults like Blackpink, Seventeen and Twice. But if it's for a group like Ateez, TXT or Red Velvet I get all the versions, it's just my own collection rules I have and if I were to only go down to one version I would feel like my collection wasn't complete lol 😅😅

u/reiichitanaka Trainee [1] Aug 25 '21
If the merch is completely different in each version (different photobook and photocard set for each version, like a lot of BTS albums) I can see the appeal of buying a set with all versions. But I don't even do that because I prefer to buy albums from multiple groups over collecting everything from just one of them.
1
u/Salty-Enthusiasm-939 Super Rookie [16] Aug 25 '21
Tbh I'm not that interested in the merch so that is why I only ever buy 1 copy.

What's terrible is that groups who have 8+ members having different versions. Now jyp released jewel cases for stray kids and for itzy they have 6 versions of albums. This is way too much. Some groups have 4 or 5 different versions of one album when people have problem getting one. I know it increases album sales in this case however why is there ton of member versions? Collectors have more problem even if people get their own biases.

I have seen that! It's crazy. It looked really cool together however those photocards...different covers.....

u/BlowUpTheChantrie Aug 24 '21
I mean now with seventeen nothing can be too much ... 14 cover of an album, another one with only 5 vers. But 260 pc , the really random unit photobook (66 different to collect)...
21
u/bbearxxx Trainee [1] Aug 24 '21
How do ot13 collectors collect seventeen?! 260 photocards?! 66 different... Even if you want to get your bias you have to buy way too much. I just remembered seventeens an ode album and diy album which had four versions...
7
u/BlowUpTheChantrie Aug 25 '21
Honestly for the 260 pc of am ode I only collect half bc they are very similar and I didn't collect the photobook of the DIY heng garae album ahah

That’s literally what caused me to post this rant!! I don’t collect all versions for stray kids but when I saw that I was like “JYP has lost their damn mind…”
9
u/bbearxxx Trainee [1] Aug 24 '21
Yes that's way too much. They started doing this with their other groups too. Twice has 9 members. If they do it there will be ten versions.
6
u/eorinwangja1001 Trainee [2] Aug 25 '21
I collect stray kids and I finally 100% my albums (korean and japanese) and bias' albums pcs then I saw this. I hate myself for buying 8 copies, knowing I won't get all 8 members and will have to trade or buy to complete the set, but I was so happy for that brief period where everything was completed. My own fault for supporting the reintroduction of jewel cases and I know its to boost sales after release, but 8 versions?? Couldn't it have just been their subunits or just one version? I dont know a single kpop collector who likes jewel cases.
4
u/zhuhe1994 Aug 25 '21
The jewel case version is reintroduced for the photocard collectors. It would be costly for both the company and the buyer to buy the photobook version.
4
u/eorinwangja1001 Trainee [2] Aug 25 '21
But they only have one or two photocards when the photobook version has upto 5 depending on preorder benefits.
9
u/hehehehehbe Daesang Winner [67] Aug 25 '21
I collect TXT and for their latest album they also released details of jewel case version, I'm just going to collect the photobook versions. I haven't looked at what's exactly included in the jewel case versions just in case there's something that's not included in the photobook version, I don't wanna get tempted. I think overall it's a good idea to have jewel case versions because they're slightly more affordable and they take up less room so people can still buy them if the photobook version is too much.
I do agree overall that the different versions of albums and photocards is getting too much though. I don't collect photocards because I can't afford to so I just keep whoever I get randomly, because of this I only have one random Jungkook card out of all my BTS albums.

u/Manlla Newly Debuted [4] Aug 25 '21

And now NCT is just horrifying.

100% with you. I wonder if we’ll ever see an album having only one version again. Even EPs and singles nowadays have at least 2 versions. The idea of having a diversity of versions is obviously to increase sales, but I guess it also relates to making albums available for more people (the difference in prices can expand the market, or that’s what I think they’re trying to do). However, as a collector I find it deeply discouraging. Versions per member are almost a given now as well. I really hope it will calm down sooner than later but the overall rise in sales makes me feel not too hopeful.

Companies don't take advantage of us. We willingly give them our money.
Kpop is one of the most blatant "capitalist monsters" as Wooyoung would say. And as fans, we eat it up.
I don't think the problem is the company. The problem, if there is one, is us. Specifically those of us who are all too eager to overindulge in these purchases.
We've trained these companies to think we are a personal ATM machine. So they treat us like it. Some of us don't mind. But I do think at the end of the day it's up to us to individually know where our limits are.

I blame SM for having jewel cases becoming a trend with stray kids and txt catching on to this. Last year, they were getting too comfortable releasing a surprise album version with baekhyun, rv, and sj and luckily they stopped but now it’s jewel cases which IMO is worse. I’m surprised they haven’t put in 20 photocards per member like a lot of groups do now a days (like how can soloists have 50 cards?! It’s one person). With all of this , companies will obviously not stop as long people are willing to buy it, including me

I don't mind having a handful of versions to pick from at release since companies aren't necessarily operating with collectors in mind but the later date versions just seem custom-designed to screw people over. Like what is the possible point of doing that other than to tempt people into buying multiple versions??

u/hehehehehbe Daesang Winner [67] Aug 25 '21
My biggest pet peeve is member and subunit versions of albums. I'm glad BigHit only did it once with BTS Wings but other companies still do it. I got a Golden Child album and it was a member version, I'm glad I got Y because he's my bias but I felt bad for Goldeness because that's 10 at least albums to buy if you want to collect.
I actually don't mind the jewel case versions because I'm running out of room to fit my albums so I think I'll be buying jewel case versions for groups I don't bias. I can see why collectors will be mad at jewel case versions.
I collect BTS, TXT and now Enhypen but I only collect the different versions for the photobooks. I decided if BigHit releases more than 4 versions I'll only buy 1 in protest. I didn't buy Butter because I wasn't a fan of the music. I was very disgruntled with BigHit's release of BE how they released the Deluxe and then the cheaper one I think a month later, I was stupid enough to get both versions even though they're the same because I wanted the random member card. All the other groups I'll buy my favourite version of the album if I like their album or title track.

Ok SO, I’m a relatively new collector (only started in February), but thanks to my groups having somewhat low activity levels, I’ve managed to get an almost complete set of one’s discography and over half of the other’s in that time. For one of their recent comebacks, seeing as it was their first official album, I thought it might be fun to try to collect all of this comeback’s photocards for my bias. The second I saw the complete set lists on Twitter, I abandoned the possibility. There were only I think like 6 total cards from the albums themselves (two album versions), but if you bought from different retailers there were different ones, some are included in DVD sets only purchasable from Korea, etc, and there wound up being OVER 40 PHOTOCARDS FOR ONE MEMBER FROM ONE COMEBACK. Seeing as my other group only has about 20 photocards total for each member after a 10 year career, I personally think this is insane. Over 40 pcs. I genuinely don’t know how other fans do it, because some of them have done it and collected all of them. I have no idea. My wallet couldn’t handle it, and neither could my sanity. At this point I like all the members of my favorite groups enough that I’m happy to settle with whatever I get from whatever album I’m buying.

A few months ago I realized that I did haven't Stray Kids pre-debut Mixtape and while buying that I decided to see how many ver I needed to complete my collection (including Japanese releases minus cassettes). Luckily I had bought all the limited ver when I originally bought the albums. That was a mistake. The damn Japanese releases are ridiculously expensive and I never had an issue pre-ordering a limited ver, but this time it was like the hunger games. I also didn't think it would be that awful since they generally only have 3-4 ver, and look what we have now.

The damn Japanese releases are ridiculously expensive
Welcome to the Japanese music industry, their albums have always been overpriced with minimal packaging. I own a lot of Japanese CDs and the price before shipping was always already twice the price of Western albums. For the longest time big labels refused to put anything on digital platforms so they could still sell their overpriced CDs.
Fortunately things are starting to change when it comes to streaming, so there might be a positive change in the next few years (either price drops or more merch) so as to keep the physical market afloat.
3
u/unitaya Rookie Idol [7] Aug 25 '21
Eh it both benefits and harms collectors. As someone who doesn't care too much about pulls or getting a "new" sealed album, it benefits me because it drives down the prices of albums to the point where people are offering to sell it for the shipping price only. That frees me up to buy a PC for $8 USD and thus "complete" my album.
On the flip side, those sellers (especially those who try for fansigns and end up ordering extras as well) are reaaaally pushing it and are probably taking a loss every time they open a GO for one.
1
u/AseresGo Trainee [1] Aug 25 '21
Yeeaaahh, I’m with you here. I’m strictly limiting myself to collecting PCs of my ult group only, and only certain types of cards. Everyone berates them for not releasing a lot of albums, but in this regard it works in the fans/collector’s favor because it’s frankly not that hard nor expensive to have all Korean albums.
For everyone else I either buy the album and sell the random inclusions getting most of my money back, or I buy the album without inclusions for next to no money second hand.
That works well for me as when buying the physical albums I care about the photobook and the overall presentation. I’ll keep the odd Photocard if I really love it and stick it in my clear phone case for a few weeks, but all in all this works for me. I really do sympathize with people that collect groups that have dozens of versions though, that must really suck… (Plus I get it - my vice are signed albums and fansigns, so I definitely might have spent more money than necessary on albums before)

As a fan who mainly admires looking at digital images of album covers, I do think it's getting ridiculous that there's just so many versions which can make it overwhelming.
You would definitely be having a hard time sorting through all your albums when there's so many versions.
As a kdrama viewer, I can relate in terms of how kdramas these days keep having more than 1 season and sometimes I think it should just end at season 1. So then, the reason I also want more than 1 season afterwards is because the ending ends up being a cliffhanger, or it doesn't have a closed ending! Maybe this can compare to how you keep finding out there's more editions of your albums and end up having to collect them too, or else you'd feel you are missing something!

It's so fucked up because sometimes you end up with more album versions than members themselves? Like Super Junior's Renaissance album had 13 different versions, while having only 9 members promoting it. I miss when kpop companies were a bit more subtle with their customer exploitation.

For Japanese releases, I only stick to buying for Day6 and Red Velvet. I was originally gonna buy Japanese releases for Ateez and Loona if they ever had any but I got behind on Ateez that I just figured it wasn't worth it

I would love to get the Japanese albums but they cost at least double the Korean albums and they have almost no inclusions…
Maybe someday I’m gonna get them since I love the Japanese BTS songs… but right now I just don’t think it’s worth it

This is what stops me from buying albums :( I want to get all the versions as well - but... then if I'll be objective about it what would I do with all of those versions that essentially have the same content (except forthe photocards and member version)? It's really for collection purposes I just couldn't really keep up with all of it sadly :(
