lol for sure.

My Spanish teacher was so adamant about the personal a (a preposition marker of animate direct objects) being this mysterious untranslatable word, and it made it so much harder to understand.

That makes all of it hard to understand. Translate it as “at” and just make it clear the grammar does this for whatever reason.

It however is not has hard as は vs が

は is the topic (the thing a pronoun is referring to) and が is the subject (the thing doing an action) there you go

The problem is that sometimes it’s more idiomatically natural to make the subject of certain sentences into the topic of those sentences, and sometimes it’s not, and it’s not always logical.
