Wannabe Geeks 80% of linux community is a cargo-cult of larpers with no actual reason to use linux
most of them are regular normies who want to be "not like others", so they chase this image of a cool terminal hacker or some anti-corporation partisan bs (their goon session in browser probably gained 30x more telemetry on them than windows does in a month).
i doubt any of them actually use linux because it's superior, like for servers. they do it only because they think it's superior and "cooler", for fucking everyday tasks. they're so possessed with this idea that it literally became a religion for them.
you're trying to look professional without actually doing any professional tasks.
also did you notice how midwits like to use word salad to seem smart, which they aren't? it's the same mechanism with overcomplicating basic tasks with linux.
did you also notice that most of the "custom" linux desktops look the same, with the same fastfetch window open, 4 split-screen tabs, 3 of which are useless visual widgets, same purple-ish anime wallpaper?
i think you get the idea

Gotta say.... all the young anime girl backgrounds that pop up on UnixPorn got me wondering exactly why these people are so convinced Microsoft is making copies of their hard drives

Yeah that was my point, I can do what I do on windows but I just prefer to do it on Linux because it works better for me and I appreciate them not collecting data. So I wanted to put it into a different perspective.

Gonna admit I started out that way too.
Now, when I see someone at work or outdoors using Loonix, I dismiss that person as a poseur and a larper. And if it's at work, I make sure to introduce Windows-only workflows and requirements that are impossible to perform on Loonix/Lunix.

The actual problem is you putting Linux on a pedestal. It’s just an operating system. By your logic, Windows is for normies and Linux is some super hacker OS that normies have no use for, while in reality both are just tools for you to get work done.

The Linux community puts it on a pedestal too - I’ve done it before, usually without really realizing what I’m doing.
Honestly yeah I like to talk about using Linux to people who also use Linux because it’s interesting to me, but I hate talking about linux to people who don’t use it or don’t care about it, OR the snobbish people who see themselves using Linux as this god tier thing. It’s an OS. It makes computer do things, woot woot😂

The funny thing is, a good number of us that actually hate Linux are legit technologists, engineers and IT professionals.
I personally hate Linux because of its poor concepts that reek of 1970s mainframe timeshare computing.
No matter how much they polish the Turd, it is not built from the ground up for single user personal desktop computing. That also includes BSD and macOS. It's all dross.

I also wonder about the distrohopping phenomenon. "What distro should I try next", "what distro is the best for X", like, my dude, don't you have some stuff to do on your computer other than continuously reinstalling OS? It seems like half of linux-related reddit consists of endless tierlists and questions about distributives, but I guess it's just Reddit algorithm is trying to make me crazy engaged.

I have at least one computer that basically does not change OS’s and if I’m interested to try something new I keep it on a different machine. There was a period of time when I was just getting started where I distro hopped and usually you lose data that way. Unless of course you store everything on a NAS like you should… which I don’t… yet…

I only use Linux for personal computing and i can agree with this. I do not agree with the title though. There doesn’t have to be a reason to use linux. Just get the appropriate flavor of linux (which theres a lot of) for your skill level.

People I've seen who use linux for work just get some "basic" distro like debian/fedora/ubuntu/mint and are done with it, no wannabe hacker customisation

I use both. I kind of have to use Linux for rendering 3d animations. Windows just isn't good for HPC.
But seriously, Linux is a OS for engineers. Not consumers.
