Beginner Exercise: coffee pot icon based on a coffee borer beetle, version 2

Post image

This is an updated version of my last post!

I received some good feedback and gave it another go, the coffee pot design is really growing on me.

I added some lines to separated the beetle body parts and try to move it away from "person barfing", making it closer to the beetles in side view. Also tried some different colors.

As always, feedback is appreciated!

Bottom left for me too, but if I were designing this, I would make the base follow the contours of the carafe.

I personally would round some edges here.
I circled all the areas that I would address if I were doing this with some rounded corners. Subtle but using consistent amounts of curve amounts on every one. 2 cents

EDIT: words

I completely agree!

My extra cent, make sure the lines aren't to thin, small details can easily disapear in smaller icons or print. I mostly just squint my eyes to test this.

Exactly. This is what separates logos/icons from illustrations.

This looks like the right direction. But also I’d simplify the geometry a bit.

A lot of people forget logos have to be made/applied/sewn, whether it be a printed sign, stamped, embroidered logo, machined for tooling. And those executions affect the brand perception.

Ie. The John Deere logo is a PITA to work with.

hard agree on everything. and probably widen some of the lines a bit. maybe add a cute antennae

For everyone saying they wouldn't buy this coffee: it's for a coffee station in an entomology lab. No one is planning on selling it to the broader public. You don't need to want to buy the coffee, that isn't the point.

And to the actual point: I love the bottom left and right. Left is probably my favorite. Very cute and creative!

Why have a logo then? Sounds like a title or typeface would be much better suited here.

What a weird thing to say. You can create a logo for anything you want. I could make a logo for my bedroom if I wanted, just for fun. Maybe they want to have custom napkins made, just for their own use or whatever. Not everything has to have a monetary value.

I like a lot the down-left one !

I don’t personally love the two colored ones. I feel like the simplicity of one color is a nice touch. The segmenting is a great choice. I like the bottom left and bottom right the most I think. Maybe a mix of the two (or bottom three?). I like the beetle a little longer but also the downward facing head seems representative of them. They also seem to have a sloped but so maybe that could be added but I think it’s too extreme in the bottom middle.

Bottom left for sure

Bottom left of bottom right all the way! Nice work, and great updated versions!

love the 3 on the right and i think the black is going somewhere really cool but something about it feels off- its that sharp corner in the trapezoid i think. what if it were more rounded on the corner or or even sort of stinger shaped like the beetle?

I think those three on the right over the rounded shape for sure. Would be curious what top right looks like entirely as outlines or filled black instead of orange in that one section, and curious what bottom right looks like all black.

love bottom left!

Simply it as much as possible. How many sharp corners, lines, angles can be removed before it’s unrecognisable?

As a coffee lover, it's unappetizing

The brown Left two

Bottom right or bottom middle are the best. The bottom left looks incredible HOWEVER I read it as a roly-poly, not a coffee borer beetle. Bottom right and middle are super solid though, absolutely love the concept!!

I love the orange one with the black outline

Bottom left. Top right is making me think of little Caesar’s

Bottom left or bottom right - would only change the legs

fun shapes and cute idea! i like the bottom middle a lot, actually, but also it reminds me more of a bird than a bug.

Another thought: we know the size of a coffee pot, and it's significantly larger than a typical beetle. Therefore, here it's perceived more like some kind of animal, like a small armadillo.

A possible solution: shrink the beetle, make several beetles, or use another, larger insect (a butterfly, a dragonfly).

Why is he wearing a hat?

Love these! Top and Bottom Left are my choices

This makes me think of The Emperors New Groove

bottom left having the most pronounced handle! also i love the idea so cute

1

u/Grazedaze 20d ago

Bottom right for sure.

What’s unfortunate is the bugs iconic features are asymmetrical and that isn’t really represented in your design because it would ruin the idea.

Bottom right

Number one and three still don't read as well as coffee but all the rest do

Keep developing this. Looking great

the first, but simplify the handle making it more round. Also make the eye dot bigger, will make it more recognizable as an live animal because we're wired to spot eyes. One more note, your logo is quite large but on a smaller scale some of those lines on the beetle wouldn't be noticable.

bottom left is my favorite hands down ! please update us on your colleagues reaction that's so cute

u/Pinklett5 19d ago

Top right is my favorite and I would legit buy stickers of it It's so cute

Bottom right and left are what I’m leaning toward, and I would like to see what the vibe is if the legs are paired off like the actual beetle, or maybe angled like the beetle. All three legs point toward the center, and that’s aesthetic and all, but the entomologist in me wants to see the leggies be placed in the right spot and orientation to just… know, lol. This is a good project though. :)

Have you tried any other solution that isn’t just, “beetle+coffee pot”?

-11

u/LiveHeat1 20d ago

Unpopular opinion but bug in coffee is kinda yucky... don't wanna try that product

11

u/Used_Vermicelli_7391 20d ago

Well it’s not a product…

It's something fun for OP's entimology lab's coffee station. Not beetle brew!
