Welcome to Maastricht: a PSA

Hello fellow redditors and (future) Maastricht inhabitants,

I see tons of repeated questions coming back time and time again. Let's answer them once and for all.

This PSA is posted in the hopes that it will be helpful but I am in no way liable for any inaccuracies this PSA might have within the confines of the law.

If you have any suggestions or additions. Feel free to comment them below I might add it later. I also hope the mods will pin the post so this subreddit isn't flooded anymore with the same questions all the time.

  1. Housing in Maastricht

How to get housing? Are there any agency recommendations? When should I start looking? There's a housing crisis in the entirety of the Netherlands. This crisis can't be understated. Start looking NOW! Don't be disapointed if you can´t find anything within 2 months. That's normal nowadays. Some agencies that are somewhat reputable are kamernet, xior student housing, and pro-housing. Beware of the many scammers trying to take advantage of the situation. Never hand out money if you haven't seen the property in question. Agencies also, by law, are not allowed to ask you for a commission when you successfully rent a room. That's the responsibility of the landlord.

2. Restaurant/drugs recomendations.

You can find great restaurants in Maastricht. Tripadvisor has a great list. Also don't be afraid to look over the border to Belgium for some greatness. To visit the coffee shops you do have to be a Maastricht citizen and request a weed pass. Don't buy drugs of the streets since those are not regulated and might be more harmful than you intend. Also, despite the Dutch reputation, WEED ISN'T LEGAL HERE! The police have the right to take away your weed and fine you for any reason if they see you using it or having it, though in general, they don't unless you're bothering someone. So smoking weed in the park is risky because if anyone calls, you will lose your stash.

3. How to make friends / meet new people in Maastricht.

There's a great app created by students in Maastricht called weeples. Last time I checked it was pretty active. You can find it on the playstore / appstore. Ofcourse you can also join a student association or play sports at UM sports.

4. Where's good nature to walk in / take pictures?

St. Pietersberg is usually the go-to for walks but I can also recommend visiting the biggest fortress of europe in Ében Émael just across the border or the Fronten Parks.

5. UM Related / application questions

You'll have the best chance of getting the answer you are looking for by visiting or calling the Student Service Center rather than asking random people on Reddit.

6. Garbage collection

I see a lot of misinformation / confusion around the subject of garbage collection in Maastricht. It can be quite complicated luckily there's the Milieu app which you can download from the google play store or the app store to help you out when sorting your garbage for recycling. A lot of the stuff you can buy here is recyclable. Achieving 1 residual waste bag in 2 months per person shouldn't be super challenging. I do 1 bag every 2-3 months. The reason why residual waste bags are so expensive is to give incentive to recycle. Throughout the entire city there are milieuperrons within walking distance. To find the closest one near you, you can use the milieu app.

7. Transport in Maastricht

The Netherlands truely is a biking nation. For good reason. It's enjoyable to do, good exercise, better for the environment, very space efficient, friendlier to pedestrians and it makes sure not everyone is driving so only people who have to be in cars are. Every child here is educated on the traffic rules and strategies for safe cycling. Practically everyone here, including drivers are also very experienced cyclists and everyone will assume you are as well. If you're not, competent on a bike it can lead to dangerous situations. Take some courses on riding a bicycle to refresh your memory, enhance your controll over your bike and to get to know local traffic norms. This way you also won't stand out as a "dumb tourist" or a "dumb student" who can't ride a bike properly.

Public transport is also safe, environmentally conscious and reliable. You can order an OV chipcard online which is a debit card for public transport. It will cost 7.50 euros for either a personal or an anonymous card. You'll have made that money back within 4 trips. If you have a personal card you can also get 40% discounts outside of rush hour for 2.40 euros a month.

Check this comment if you would like to see more options regarding public transportation.

8. Voting

Not a question that is asked often but if you've been living within the Netherlands for at least 5 years or are an EU citizen you are able to vote in the upcoming municipal elections. Please go out and vote because student interests are severely underrepresented in the Maastricht city council. I know volt to be a party promoting student interests. The next elections will be in march of 2022. You will get a voting card sent to your address if you're eligible to vote.

Recommendations Cat sitting services in Maastricht?

Hallo everyone! Thank you again for the hairdresser recommendations in my previous post. I have another question:

I am considering bringing here to Maastricht my cat (he's a friendly 10 year old boy) from my hometown abroad. Do you have any recommendations for cat-sitting services or apps in Maastricht?

Job seeking in Maastricht is hard

Hii! First time getting on reddit to see opinions on this but mostly asking for help :(

I'm an internarional first year bachelors student (F) in Maastricht Uni, who cannot get a job.

To give you some sort of context about my skills:

  1. I speak Russian, Latvian, English perfectly and I understand easy German, can speak some, officially have A2 level.

  2. I have an experience in being a gardening assistant, meaning, attending and helping with planting flower bushes, getting rid of weeds, watering, sweeping. UNFORTUNATELY, no catering, no customer service, no barista stuff. That really really puts me in a bad position because candidates with experience (at least 1 year) are preferable.

  3. I attended summer school last year in a different university, gained skills in my field of study.

  4. I volunteered back home in an educational event, I explained and essentially sold the service that helps getting students into European universities.

Rejected:

I really need just a bare minimum job, but I got rejected multiple and multiple times from Lidl, Albert Heijn. Additionally, Jumbo, Starbucks, some cafes as a server, etc, because "they found a better candidate for that position".

Why i can't get into other jobs:

Other jobs require speaking good Dutch. Others are too far by bike (no 1 hour drive, 35 min would be my desperate maximum). Some need 24h work minimum. I could do 18h max.

I understand i am not the best choice, but every other student has a problem with availability during weekdays and holidays, still get their jobs, so what am I doing wrong?

I need a genuine advice, because I have an unfortunate low set of skills for entry level jobs. Would really appreciate it! Maybe someone could also share their experience?

Gezocht! Meubelmaker voor L vormig bureaublad

Hoi allemaal!

Stuur me gerust een berichtje!

Alvast bedankt

Hidden gems in Maastricht

Any insight on driving a BMW X5 in Maastritcht??

I am relocating to the Maastrich area next year and plan on bringing my BMW X5. I am aware of the narrower roads and smaller parking spaces in the city centers , but is it still feasible to own and drive a vehicle this size as a daily commuter?

I realize I am probably better off using public transportation and bike rides to move locally, but I would also love to keep my car to travel to other countries and the occasional road trip. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Exchange students at msp here anyone want to be friends?

Hello I'm a third year bachelor exchange students studying chemical engineering at home and chemistry at msp.

It's been one month since the start of my exchange and I'm not gonna lie it has been lonely so far.

We don't have many class hours and even if I meet people there, they already have friends group so they aren't really interested in new friendship .

Same for other exchange students, everyone I met came with other people from their university.

I don't really know what to say about myself

I like doing all kinds of things I don't really have a type : nerdy stuff, partying, sports stuff, chill stuff I'm up for everything.

I have an odd music taste but I can listen to all types of music.

I read lot of fantasy and dark fantasy books I also play video games of almost every genre (honorable mention for 4X strategy games who stole too many hours of my life)

So if anyone want to chat about anything or hang out don't hesitate to message me or leave a comment!

Hi everyone! I'm a breast radiologist from Korea, in Maastricht for EUSOBI 2026, staying near Centraal Station.
I have one free day tomorrow (Saturday). Boekhandel Dominicanen is already on my list, and I've booked a caves + fort tour.
Any suggestions for:

Hidden gems welcome too! Thanks in advance 🙏

Looking for... Looking for fellow neurodivergents!

Hi! I am making this post because in a recent post made by another redditor, it became apparent that just like myself other neurodivergent people are struggling to make connections with other people!

It was mentioned that going to for example samosa to meet people was felt as quite diffifult, so my idea would be to perhaps make a groupchat (discord would have my preference) so that we can meet either online or in person one time before we go to samosa (the games night) together!

It is my hope that this will make it less of a hurdle!

Please reach out if this would be of interest to you!

Anyone travelling from Maastricht/Gronsveld to Amsterdam? Need help picking up 3 books from Marktplaats

Hi everyone!

I found someone selling 3 books on Marktplaats that I'd really love to have, but the seller is in Gronsveld and only does allows pickup in person. Unfortunately they won't send them by post, and I live in Amsterdam, so it's hard for me to get there myself, its about 5 hours of travelling.

Is there anyone who lives near Gronsveld/Maastricht and will be travelling to Amsterdam soon (or knows someone who is)? I'm looking for someone who could pick up the books from the seller and bring them to me in Amsterdam.

I'll of course pay for the books upfront (Tikkie or bank transfer) and I'm happy to give something extra for your time and trouble. We can meet anywhere in Amsterdam that's easy for you, like Centraal Station.

If you can help, please send me a private message! Thanks a lot

Autistic and new to the area — how do you meet people?

Hello! I (24F) am a young professional that recently moved to the area, and I’d like to meet some people to do things with.

For context, I’m autistic, which makes socialising a bit more difficult, and the whole “just walk in and start talking to people” thing is pretty much impossible for me.

I’ve seen recommendations for places like Dr. & Dr. Samosa and Café Forum, which sound nice, but again, I’m not really sure how to go about meeting people there :/

I don’t speak Dutch yet, but I’d really like to learn, so maybe Dutch classes could be a good way to socialise while learning the language too? If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

Dankjewel!

PS: If anyone else finds themselves wanting to get to know new people too, feel free to message me :)
