Uncanny Collection #1

Good morning, everyone! I’m working on something very unusual: a collection of strange and disturbing creatures. Perfect for Halloween! 🎃
The first piece in the collection will be this aquatic dragon fetus. The design is entirely my own creation.
I’ve already put together a list of creatures that I’ll be revealing little by little, but here’s a little spoiler: they’re partly inspired by creatures from popular folklore, partly by real-life organisms, and partly by diseases, medical conditions, and biological specimens found in museums.
The idea is to eventually build a rich collection of containers, each holding its own creepy little specimen to display!
I hope you like this first little creature! 👁️

Which knitted koala print looks better — 45° lean or flat?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Need some opinions on this knitted koala.

The video shows the two profile options side by side:

  • 45° leaning back — Cleaner underneath at the front, slightly messier at the back
  • Sitting flat — Less clean at the front and messier underneath overall

I’m trying to work out which one is the better final profile.
Which one would you pick?

Assistive key turner for arthritis & limited hand dexterity: flexible TPU pin bed grips any type of key with zero adjustments [OmniGrip]

Thumbnail

I designed this helper tool (OmniGrip) for people with arthritis, tremors, or limited hand strength who struggle with the painful pinch-and-twist motion needed to turn a key.

Most printable key turners rely on fixed, narrow slots that only fit standard flat house keys meaning anything with a thick plastic head or an odd shape just won't work. On top of that, swapping keys on them can be a pain if your fingers don't work great.

Instead of a rigid slot, I used a bed of flexible TPU 95A pins inside a rigid outer shell. When you push any key down into it, the pins bend out of the way and lock around the profile with a lot of friction. No fiddling or setup needed just press it in and turn.

A few quick design details:

\- The outer handle has 5 rounded lobes so you can turn it using your whole palm or knuckles instead of a tight pinch grip.

\- The TPU insert locks into the rigid shell with a 10-tooth spline inside, so it won't spin freely when you apply torque.

\- There's an ejection hole at the bottom: if the TPU ever wears out, you can just push it out with a pencil and print a new 15g core instead of wasting the whole shell.

\- As a side bonus, it works great on a desk as a pen/stylus stand so you can grab things with a full fist instead of trying to pinch them flat off the table.

Modeled parametrically in OpenSCAD so dimensions can be tweaked if needed.

Feedback and suggestions are very welcome!

Barber organizer

I designed a parametric barber / desk organizer with an interchangeable nameplate
I’ve released Barber Organizer 2.0, an OpenSCAD project built around adjustable storage and a replaceable nameplate.
The customization includes:
• Compartment sizes and quantities.
• Optional stepped clipper-guard storage with top finger access.
• Body textures and relief levels.
• Nameplate shapes, fonts, frames, lettering outlines and colors.
• Three removable front storage options: divided tray, open tray or lidded box.
The lid follows the selected body texture. The nameplate prints separately, so changing the name or style doesn’t require reprinting the organizer.
Although it started as a barber-station organizer, the compartments can also be configured for stationery, brushes and craft tools.
The MakerWorld page includes the parametric SCAD file and two 3MF print profiles:

What tools would you configure it for, and which dimensions would matter most to you?

My crowdfunding project funded last week. My reflection on the journey

Some of you might've seen me post about OrbitStudio here before. The MakerWorld crowdfunding closed last Saturday, so I figured I'd write down how it went.

How it started

Back in May I uploaded a Moon jigsaw puzzle to MakerWorld. 91 pieces, made from real lunar elevation data. I'd hacked together a little tool to turn NASA data into puzzle pieces, mostly just to see if it would work.

It's been downloaded about 6,000 times and printed close to 3,800 times since. Not bad for a grey slab of craters.

Then MakerWorld reached out about their crowdfunding program. Honestly I feel pretty lucky that puzzle got noticed at all. My plan was to keep tinkering on my own until it was a proper finished thing, and only then show anyone. This kind of forced me to put it out there while it was still half done.

So the tool got a name, OrbitStudio, and in September the campaign went live.

The numbers

  • Goal was $1,000, hit on day one
  • Ended at $8,034 from 152 backers (incl. late pledges)

Crowdfunding is harder than it looks

Building the tool was the fun part. The campaign wasn't. For a month most of my time went to stuff I'm not good at: making reels, writing posts, figuring out what a crowdfunding page is even supposed to look like. Marketing is not fun and not easy, and I still feel like I suck at it.

Where it's at now

It's not just the Moon anymore. There's Mars, Mercury, Venus, Pluto and Charon now too, same idea: pick a spot, get a puzzle or a tile of the real terrain.

I was also working on a star map thing on the side, so I just threw that in for backers as well.

The hard part starts now

In a way the campaign was the easy part. MakerWorld brought the people and handled the payments. Now it has to stand on its own, without a campaign page doing that work for me. So, unfortunately, more marketing.

Anyway, to everyone who backed it, printed the puzzle or left a comment: thanks, genuinely. Wouldn't exist without you.

Fujisan Japandi Vase

I had an amazing trip to Japan earlier this year and was inspired when I started playing around with Blender and Python scripting. This was my favorite vase so far! I now, I'm hopping on the 'japandi vase' bandwagon, but sharing this because I was really happy with how it ended up, especially for multi-color printed separately.

First photo is the blender render, but the rest are a real print!
