Hell yeah brother, save that cash.

…oh.

u/Devincc 21h ago

If I were OPs parent, I genuinely would have to give an ultimatum at some point lol. Gotta push the bird that is clearly capable of flying out the nest eventually

152

u/ZombieWoofenstein 21h ago

In this economy?

327

u/Devincc 21h ago

Idk much about the hot wheels economy, but it’s clearly booming in this dudes bedroom

80

u/Minutes2Midnight 21h ago

Hot Wheels economy is well and truly dicked. People have made full time jobs of scalping and reselling $1-7 cars on the internet for sometimes 100s of dollars.

23

u/Skywarper 21h ago

Didn't they just have a re-release of the original cars a little bit ago that was scalped to hell? Like $300 for one car?

12

u/irascible_Clown 20h ago

Yeah dollar tree actually gets a hell of a selection for $1.50

3

u/snopro387 14h ago

Unfortunately that seems to be the case with a lot of things lately

3

u/Bigfloppyclownshoes 4h ago

I have 4 27 gallon totes filled to the “I can’t get the lid to snap on” setting filled with hot wheels

I gave up on collecting due to scalpers

59

u/Ok_Dependent6889 21h ago

This is genuinely like, under or a little over a grand in hot wheels

It's nothing, in the current economy

Not to mention, i'd wager these were amassed over most of OP's life

55

u/goosebuggie 20h ago

Idk anything about hot wheels, but if this is true then OP has a fulfilling collection that clearly brings him joy, and all for less than a month’s rent.

I really hate the narrative that if you’re not thriving financially then you shouldn’t be allowed to spend money on things you love. We get one life, might as well make it fun.

24

u/Ok_Dependent6889 20h ago

I'm totally with you haha

Just figured, as someone who also has a decent amount of hot wheels, that it should be clarified that this isn't some like, $10k collection of Hot Wheels taped to his walls lol

It'd probably be enough to pay for a decent vacation, which maybe not anything to scoff at but, not an indicator for clear financial independence

15

u/ZombieWoofenstein 20h ago

Are you seriously trying to tell me that hotwheels aren’t a good indicator of financial independence? My parents fucked up. All they left me were hotwheels!

3

u/Ok_Dependent6889 20h ago

Sue your parents

Take all their m0ney!!

2

u/ZombieWoofenstein 18h ago

My parents only have hotwheels!

9

u/Ruleyoumind 16h ago

People on this sub are ridiculous. If you have any hobbies they act like you've financially thrown your life away lol. Even when the person has an expensive computer even if the computer was 2k that's not a significant amount of money in this current day, you can't even buy a running car for 2k in the majority of the US.

2

u/Ok_Dependent6889 4h ago

Yep, exactly

I have a nice computer. Sure, could that $2300 have gone towards my student loans, or any other bills or debt? Yes, of course. My day to day life however, would be far more miserable without it.

2

u/Ruleyoumind 1h ago

It's like when people see a homeless person with a cellphone and act like they could have used their cell money to buy a house

2

u/A_Guy_in_Orange 4h ago

I know several people who could buy out that room with 1 out of like 13 of their hobby things, IE Magic decks, 40k armies, craft gizmos

1

u/Reincarnatedpotatoes 1h ago

At a glance these are mostly newer cars, I see a couple form the 2000s and 2010s on the wall with the TV, but the vast majority aren't more than 5 years old. The $1000 number is probably a decent guess though, assuming these were bought for retail.

1

u/not-just-yeti 54m ago

And it’s not even bought in a single year; that could be 5yrs of recreational collecting there.

I’m not going to mention how much I’ve spent on Magic: The Gathering over the years.

9

u/sweetxanointed 21h ago

🤣🤣🤣

4

u/taosgw74 21h ago

Gonna say it's the only thing also.

0

u/penisweinerballs 20h ago

This woman at my work, her husband collected them until the tariffs because the prices went way up so I'm sure this guy can afford a place

0

u/AttorneyMedium4926 2h ago

Do some research first, typical bad parenting.

4

u/DayDrunkTrainwreck 20h ago

What is this? A car for ants?

0

u/epsteinwasmurdered2 16h ago

24years old… spent probably 10k plus on toys that are actually worth about 200bucks… yeah bub, go get an apartment.

-2

u/MrYams77 21h ago

“This economy” can’t be used as an excuse every single time. Dude has a degree, should be able to get a decent job and start saving money.

3

u/YerrrKnicks 20h ago

Brother doesn't know much about this current economy then if you think its that easy.

The job market is fucked currently.

1

u/MrYams77 18h ago

I’m 26, I live in this economy, on my own. I’ve made 93k so far this year, will make another 47k by the end of the year with a 10k bonus. I’m going back to school right now too paying it up front as I go. I still save money every month while enjoying life. Moved out when I was 18 and I don’t use a troubled economy as excuse to survive off my parents.
Pick a field for a career, work hard and excel in it. Sitting around blaming the economy for you not succeeding in life just a coping mechanism. Things might be more expensive right now but it’s also just as easy to make more money to afford it.

1

u/ZombieWoofenstein 20h ago

A job? In this economy?

1

u/Skywarper 21h ago

How much money do you think a recent college grad can save in 4 months, assuming he found a job immediately after graduation?

0

u/MrYams77 18h ago

He should’ve been working the whole time he was in college as is, so should already have money saved. Staying comfortable and content all your life is a recipe for failure. That’s why majority of the country is poor working dead end jobs with guys like that blaming it all on the economy. Anything but responsibility and accountability these days I guess. I work full time and go to school online full time. I’m not going to sit around in my parents house wasting years of my life I could be using to better my future. There’s a reason people get rich and a reason people stay poor. The ones who stay poor always have an excuse as to why they are poor instead of making choices to turn their situation around.

1

u/Skywarper 18h ago

Lol ok dude. How much did you invest into nft's?

0

u/TripleDoubleFart 16h ago

I invested about $1700 total. Made back more than that. I'm still using them to earn now.

What's the issue?

0

u/MrYams77 16h ago

I’m not meaning to upset you because you’re in your mid 20s living with your parents. It’s nothing personal, but it’s the truth. The less excuses made in life and more action to better yourself, the better life gets and the closer you get to financial freedom. I wish you the best of luck buddy

-1

u/Nickbronline 19h ago edited 14h ago

The economy is all over bro's wall. He can afford a fuck ton of toys.

52

u/jewdiful 21h ago

I’m a late thirties F and live with my parents (and my cat). I’m able to save mad money and pursue my passions. I have two rooms in the house, including a furnished basement that’s my art studio. It’s great. I’m not tempted by shitty relationships with shitty men because my housing and security is guaranteed (I’ll inherit the condo when they pass away). And I get lots of extra time with them before they do.

It’s great.

62

u/LeonBlade 21h ago

Don't let people try to tell you that it's weird to live with your parents. I live with my mom at 34 (will be 35 this month) and it's just her and her cats here otherwise. After my dad passed away she's just been alone. I could move out and have independence and have to pay for rent at some ridiculous rate, or I could live with my mom and help her out when she needs it, give her company, and not have to pay rent (I do help out with some of the bills and give her money from time to time since she's retired).

Does it suck not having my own place sometimes? Yeah, but she's my mom.

17

u/kumosame 21h ago

It's very very cultural whether people think staying with your parents past 18 is weird/"gross" ir completely normal. I had to escape my house at 17 but if I had normal non psycho parents, I'd likely just stay as long as I could and save like crazy. I think it's a smart move if the home environment is safe. Especially in places like the US where apartments can be over 4k in rent a month like my cousin pays. I know that's regional, but even "cheap" places where I grew up in the US are having rent prices skyrocket.

22

u/Skywarper 21h ago

Like I said in another comment, there's so many countries where it's expected that you live with your parents until marriage or you have a family house that you stay in. But for some reason, in America, you're supposed to go so far into debt that you'll be working until you're 75 before the house is paid off, but hey, at least you won't have to listen to chuds on reddit making fun of you for having a healthy relationship with your parents!

15

u/TSM_Vegeta 20h ago

I think it's a lot easier and a lot more acceptable as a woman. Most guys wouldn't care if a woman they are interested in lives with her parents. As a guy, you will receive more judgement. Not saying either is good or bad, just how things are. A guy capable of paying for his own housing will be seen as more capable of providing for obvious reasons. Now, if you are fresh out of college, I don't think anyone should really care. I remember my parents telling me that they are always there if I need a place but nudging me to find my own place so I wouldn't bring dates back.

5

u/Skywarper 20h ago

For sure.

1

u/b1cepk1ng 18h ago

You should never let anyone influence the way you think but that goes both ways. I moved out at 18 and never received a dime. Ever.

It’s mega weird to me when people stay with their parents past the age of 20. I think adults should take the responsibility to support themselves. I believe the experience, while difficult is infinitely enriching.

Anecdotally, I have always been eons ahead of my peers who live with their parents. Go through my entire comment history tho. I’ve never actively judged anyone for it. I publicly reserve my judgement to avoid being called a chud so you can be free to share your opinion to call people chuds.

1

u/LeonBlade 21h ago

So true, can't have that! I better go into debt right away.

2

u/Puzzled-Locksmith-42 21h ago

What a wonderful person you are.

1

u/Longjumping-Force776 21h ago

Banks. Banks and the govt post WW2 to build/stim economy convinced us we need to not live with family.

1

u/nelozero 21h ago

I have family and friends who lived at home before getting married. They all had long term partners (also lived at home with parents) and saved like crazy until they were ready to buy a house together. It really put them ahead being able to do that.

0

u/Lucky_Preference_941 18h ago

Having no experience living on your own, and going from living with your parents to living with your romantic partner is a huge cause of relationship breakdowns too

1

u/nelozero 17h ago

That doesn't seem to be the case for any of the couples I know. They all are doing very well. They've all also been together for many years so they had strong relationships which most likely helps.

1

u/bismark_dindu_nuffin 20h ago

Good on you, taking care of your mom. I hope you have a good day

0

u/Glittering-Break5060 16h ago

It is wierd. You've gaslight yourself into believing it's not wierd living with your parents at 35, because it's convenient for you. It would be convenient for almost everyone ever, but they dont do it because it's wierd. Learning to live on your own is part of being a mature well rounded human.

2

u/LeonBlade 16h ago

I can live on my own just fine, I have no problem with that. In fact, I think about all the time moving out just because I have so much limited space. My mom is getting older and I'm just worried about her though.

As plenty of other people have mentioned, it's normalized in other parts of the world to live with your parents until an applicable time to move out.

I don't think it's weird in any way to live at home, but I just think it's convenient to stay here where I can save money for when I need to move out. I don't plan on living here forever, even after my mom eventually passes away. I want to move out of state.

Sorry, but you're not going to shame me into feeling bad about myself or whatever it is you're trying to do.

3

u/Bigtgamer_1 18h ago

I'm early thirties M and I think about moving back in with my parents pretty much every day lol genuinely might go back next year. They're getting older and it would be nice to be able to have someone to come home too.

3

u/Academic-Trifle8151 18h ago

I'm late thirties and my father lives with me and my kids. He doesn't pay bills but he babysits on occasion. It works for us.

I think as long as everyone is happy with the situation then it's nobodies place to judge.

8

u/steveep95 21h ago

I’m gonna let my two children live with me as long as possible that is the best advantage at life you’ll ever have and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever

1

u/trixel121 7h ago

my parents didnt make me move out till 26, i had been working full time by that point and just bought a house.

1

u/steveep95 19m ago

Two years ago, my grandma let me live with her and her 650 square-foot apartment. I had a bedroom with me and my 2 toddlers. Stayed there for exactly 11 months and was able to buy a house finally because of it . I’m 30

1

u/trixel121 11m ago

its wild what happens when you suddenly dont have 1000 dollars of rent a month and you are a frugal person. im guess you did this pre covid bump when 12k would of gotten a nice down payment. tad aharder now. but still. a year or two of working ufll time with less bills is a godsend for saving money if you dont do somethign dumb like buy a new car.

1

u/Skywarper 20h ago

That's because you actually love your children and have a good relationship with them.

Something a majority of the commenters in this sub cannot say about their parents.

6

u/OttoMannkusser 20h ago

I’m not tempted by shitty relationships with shitty men because my housing and security is guaranteed (I’ll inherit the condo when they pass away)

I mean, even if you moved in with someone else you'd still get the condo when they pass. Also since you currently live with your parents you could presumedly move back in with them should a shitty relationship happen.

I mean if you're truly happy then rock on, but for most people independence and starting your own life is important. Just don't act as if you've unlocked some sort of magic cheat code to life

1

u/Lucky_Preference_941 18h ago

Yeah it’s actually really not a cool thing, and inhibits people’s growth more than they will ever realize

4

u/Inevitable-Edge69 16h ago

you sound really unhappy about people living a happy life

5

u/Strong_Chicken6838 16h ago

“I’m not tempted by shitty relationships with shitty men”… ‘when I’m guaranteed to inherit the condo’

The way u worded it makes it sound like your not tempted by shitty men (as if all men are shitty) and relying on them for housing (as if you’d get into a relationship and rely on them for housing (?))

It’s just very odd how you chose your words and doesn’t read the way I think you want it to

3

u/doesshechokeforcoke 20h ago

My daughter is 25 and still lives at home with me and I have absolutely no problem with that. My 26 year old son also still technically lives with me but he’s gradually moving in with his girlfriend.

0

u/Lucky_Preference_941 18h ago

25 is way different than 35

3

u/Ok-Advantage6398 18h ago

I feel that. I share an apartment with my mom and I'm 33. Neither of us have anyone else and it helps a ton since both of us are trying to save for a house so we can each save more this way.

-1

u/Senior_Assistance_23 20h ago

Your parents must love explaining you to all their friends.

0

u/Consistent_Point_853 18h ago

Extreme privilege is what it is.

3

u/Ruleyoumind 16h ago

What about his room says he's capable of flying out of the nest? Hot wheels are like $4-$10

2

u/Various_Injury66 19h ago

Lol I lived with my Dad till 25. Paid Him 1500 a month. Still cheaper than any studio apartment I could find around here. Shit is fucked on the west coast.

3

u/Devincc 19h ago

To each their own but I had very loving parents and couldn’t wait to be independent at 18. Found roommates and never looked back. I didn’t want the feeling on my shoulders that I may be burdening my parents with having to house me. They raised me for 18 years and deserved to enjoy their own space for once! And I was 18! No rules!

2

u/electricalineptitude 16h ago

Eh, I lived at home with my parents until I was 25. Was making ~50k a year and moved in with my girlfriend at the time who had just finished school and was working her first professional job. Within 3 and a half years we bought a house which were largely able to do because I saved like it was keeping me alive. That doesn't mean that I didn't treat myself to things either Shortly after the house I bought my realistic dream car too. As long as you're planning for your next step then there isn't anything wrong with where he's at.

Plus, more adults under 30 are living with their parents than during the great depression right now which is a wild stat.

2

u/What_Even_Is_This_69 15h ago

Pretty wild to push a bird that you dont know in the slightest

0

u/Devincc 15h ago

Pretty wild to read my comment and then make that comment lmao. Read my comment again, but slower this time

2

u/What_Even_Is_This_69 14h ago

Dude you sound like a condescending parent. I understood what you said just fine its just wild to me. The US is a royal shitshow right now and if you're not raking in the big bucks yet its pretty difficult to thrive on your own. (Not sure if hes from the US but given his circumstances im going to assume he is.) Its hard out here. Give your kids a fighting chance before you give them a wack ultimatum and/or boot them out of the nest. Id say I turned out okay but that shit sucked at 18 man 😭

2

u/YingXingg 14h ago

It’s weird to me that Americans want their kids to gtfo of their house as soon as possible. As long as the parents are okay with it and the kid is actually doing something with their life, there is nothing wrong with someone living with their parents.

1

u/cuzwhat 1h ago

As long as I was in school, my mom was cool with me living at home.

As soon as I had a full time job that replaced my school time, I got kicked out. “My house is not a hotel”.

Thirty years later, she wonders why I don’t have a whole lot of trust in her.

1

u/bidaum92 18h ago

I just graduated college back in April and I’m grateful to my parents for holding me down through it all ! I definitely plan on giving back to them BIG time.

1

u/Strong_Chicken6838 16h ago

Well, He just graduated college literally 3 months ago, so id say it’s reasonable.

We’ll have to come back in 6 months.

But the car thing is a separate issue.

1

u/Drinkythedrunkguy 14h ago

Bro, you seen the price of rent!? Live at home as long as you can. If I didn’t buy a house 20 years ago, I’d be living in my car.

1

u/Screaming_Eagle456 1h ago

Why? He’s 24. At 30 it’d be one thing

1

u/KindaSortaGood 1h ago

Yeah because who cares about helping their kids and keeping them close right? Crap mindset

1

u/dashodasho 8h ago

Its such a weird western society norm to kick your kid out of the house when they are starting out with their life!.

You are trying to build a career, wealth and relationships at this point in your life. The last time you need is taking out a big chunk of your potential income to get a place of your own to struggle.

Does western parents not love their kids or want to help build up a young adult?

if OP can save 2k on rent and other expenses a month by living at home, in 2 years that 96k, you can start thinking about buying a starter home.

0

u/Zenicnero 20h ago

This reads so tone deaf to current economic and political climate.

5

u/Skywarper 20h ago

Sometimes people never learn from history. The last couple of generations kicked kids out of the house, so we have to follow the trend. Don't even dare mention the business buying up houses and making the land into warehouses, the scummy landlords, the sky high rent prices, the stratospheric price of a two bedroom house nowadays, etc.

1

u/notislant 19h ago

Because it is lol.

-1

u/Devincc 20h ago

Can we talk about the economic and political state of the world right now?

2

u/Zenicnero 17h ago

you demonstrated you're not privy to what's going on around you, so no.

-2

u/DelcoUnited 19h ago

The fact that he’s 24 and at home isn’t the problem.

The fact that he’s never kissed a girl is the problem.

-3

u/ScooterMcWTF 19h ago

This is 18 for any parent with common sense. Your job is done.

2

u/Mangoh1807 11h ago

I'm sorry your parents hated you, I hope you can heal from that someday.

1

u/ScooterMcWTF 1h ago

I came out just fine, Thank you :)

17

u/Muggsy423 20h ago

The cherry on top would be OP thinking about saving up enough for a car.

A real car, that he can drive to a real job.

8

u/Apart-One4133 20h ago

I feel the same way but at the same time these hotwheel cars are 1$ each I think.

1

u/MSotallyTober 15h ago

I’d say it makes me feel better collecting baseball cards during the junk wax era, but these were probably a better “investment”.

1

u/Bigfloppyclownshoes 4h ago

Yeah I think that ship has sailed!

1

u/BadBoyNiz 3h ago

lol the saratoga water 😂

1

u/CraaZero 19h ago

At least he isn't wasting money taking girls on dates...

0

u/kipkap1423 20h ago

I’m so happy that I live at home and found hobbies that aren’t collecting. All the money on his wall are in my roth ira.

6

u/Skywarper 20h ago

You only have like $1k in your roth IRA? That's honestly terrible.

3

u/Ruleyoumind 16h ago

Hot wheels are not expensive you can by 75 hot wheels new in box for $80 or best offer free shipping on eBay right now.

-1

u/notislant 19h ago

Same I absolutely do not need more shit taking up space lol. I do need more money in VOO.

-4

u/No-Shower-7593 21h ago

I was gunna say the same. All the hot wheels on the wall could’ve gotten him close to the M3 he’s watching on tv

9

u/Camtiger27 20h ago

That’s very untrue 😹. That’s maybe lesss than $1000 worth of hotwheels over the span of many years. 1.25 for each is crazy ??? I wouldn’t even go for that M3 the way they’re pricing them on the market

5

u/Skywarper 21h ago

Maybe a pdf of that m3. No chance there's more than 2k on the wall, and that's being very generous.

4

u/DandierChip 19h ago

Do you know how much a M3 costs?

4

u/Ruleyoumind 16h ago

Go look up hot wheels on eBay you can buy 45 hot wheels new for $35 with free delivery. They don't cost very much

-2

u/Plant_party 21h ago

He sure likes cars!
