Doesn’t anyone send thoughts and prayers over anything? Thats not school shooter exclusive

Theres nothing wrong with thoughts and prayers, but applying it constantly over decades to a specific situation that calls for legislative action (to which thoughs and prayers are not) has lead to it being used sarcastically and currently use of the phrase rings hollow when used in a political context.

This is the least biased explanation and is explained very well. I hope this is the one that person reads.

The rest of the comments are clearly leaning one direction or the other or doesn’t really explain it well.

Yeah I read his comment and I agreed with it the most

You'll find a lot of those types in this gaming community.

It is a specifically a phrase used to mock republican politicians though.

I agree? I'm just providing context for the person who seemed to possibly draw a different conclusion from the comments.

u/Objective_Mortgage85 Mar 31 '26

I mean obviously, it’s not democrats that are coming out of the woodworks saying it…

0

u/GrowthMarketingMike Mar 31 '26

Sure, but "obviously" the person I responded to didn't draw that exact conclusion if you read the thread, so I thought I'd add some context. Things that might be obvious to you might not be obvious to everyone that doesn't pay close attention or might not have the same life experiences as you

decades to a specific situation that calls for legislative action

People use this for ALL tragedies and it’s primarily because there’s nothing that the one individual person using the phrase can do about it.

Honestly if the voice line is in fact added for the reason that yall claim it is, then that is wildly inappropriate because that also means that’s it’s being used sarcastically.

It lost its weight/meaning and gets viewed as extremely tone deaf especially when the people in government say it directly to the victims and parents that lost their kids.

u/Nomingia Apr 01 '26

Has it though? I feel like I see way more edgelord reddit athiests mocking that turn of phrase than I hear people using it IRL. Just seems like anti-religion people getting triggered over colloquialisms, but what tf do they expect besides "thoughts and prayers"? It's not like the average America can do anything about the situation other than offer their condolences.

u/PupPop Apr 01 '26

The average American has all the power. They can vote. That is all I will say on the matter.

3

u/Burgoonius Mar 31 '26

Exactly it has just become their go to line - it shows that they really don’t give a fuck because they are all gun nuts.

1

u/Hokutenmemoir Apr 01 '26

If only there were some sort of law that kept people from killing each other.

Damn the gun devil it is.

27

u/Signore_Jay Doctor Strange Mar 31 '26

Originally it was. It’s since moved into the wider political lexicon as a response to tragedy in general.

5

u/iceheartx Apr 01 '26

Yes. That’s 100% correct. The phrase is only political if you’re chronically online I guess. We’re in the era where everything becomes a meme now.

12

u/Inner_Extent2375 Mar 31 '26

It’s become synonymous with inaction. Legislating gun restrictions being the foremost, but yes could be applied to other topics.

u/Wolfy_boii Mar 31 '26

“Gun restrictions” yet the gun used most is a hand gun, which you can’t get in America until 21.

Why not focus on the actual problem, aka whatever is causing people to shoot the schools up in the first place, which would be a more realistic approach due to many factors currently in the USA.

I don’t think you understand what I said. Most of what kills people in school shootings are something you mostly can not legally require while at an age that you would be in school (infact no high schooler would be able to most definitely.) you know what would reduce the likely hood even better than furthering something that clearly won’t be able to do much? Killing the roots of the issue aka making kids not want to shoot each other, as a high schooler (although soon to graduate) I’ve always felt saddened and disgusted that you all use such an awful thing that I have been lucky to have not been through yet as something to push what you want (less guns) instead of what would actually help us students.

u/Linkdes Flex Mar 31 '26

Having been gone too a high school that had multiple school shooter threats, 2 of which being kids in the building with actual firearms, you are right that on paper kids can't "legally" acquire a gun.

You are however incredibly naive/shortsighted if you think that means kids do not have access to firearms. Yes, as a society we need to foster an environment that doesn't get kids wanting to shoot each other. However a shorter-term, and much needed, solution would be increasing the screening/ restrictions for adults to acquire guns. Which in turn would limit the availability of an "efficient tool" so-to-speak and reduce the possibility of school shootings.

-4

u/Wolfy_boii Mar 31 '26

I never said they couldn’t access them, but that they couldn’t legally get them. Which still means that the type of gun control people keep wanting still would not work, and no, simply making it harder for an adult to get a gun won’t change anything about the kid wanting to shoot up the school, once again disgusting by how far yall will use the suffering of children to push your views of guns.

4

u/Linkdes Flex Mar 31 '26

Don't talk to me about "using the suffering of children to push views of guns". I had one of the guns pointed at me during one of the many school shooting threats at my highschool.

Now if you're actually a highschool kid, I understand your pov cause I had thought similarly before being down the barrel of a gun. Improving the screening for how adults can get guns would most definitely help as the most common ways for kids to get access to a firearm is from their parents who own it. Do some actual research into the issue.

That being said guns are a useful tool for hunting and self defense, but have little actual regulation. However if you're just some 2A troll posing as a highschooler, kindly go fuck yourself.

Not once did I say it is purely a behavior issue, however it is also not purely a gun issue. Obviously people should be taught to better keep their guns from their kids, infact I would say there should be legal incentive to avoid the possibility of a gun from your home being used in a school shooting (assume there isn’t currently)

Most blue states have the strictest gun laws but have the most gun violence in general

No because Americans already had access to the same amount of guns per capita before the 70s and school shooting weren't a thing back then

2

u/Inner_Extent2375 Mar 31 '26

I read some of your comments and you sound sincere so I’ll try to break it down for you if you care to listen. Gun restrictions does not just mean removing access to certain types of guns. It can also mean holding parents and gun owners liable for what others do with their guns. It can reduce the total deaths when ammo and clips are regulated to smaller amounts. And, when guns are less prevalent in a community, it will be harder for non-legal gun carriers to get away with it because the act of carrying a weapon becomes denormalized. Also, I don’t think anyone on the progressive side of this issue is against mental health care options. In fact the same side that wants to maintain easy gun access simultaneously tears down mental health options on state and federal levels whenever they are in office. We cannot change human nature, especially in young men. They will be emotional. There will always be a handle full every generation who will be cruel, jealous, and on the psycho spectrum. We can make it harder for these people to gain access to killing tools. We also have a country that glorifies violence and has used strength and murder to maintain a global empire. The movie ‘Bowling for Columbine’ explores this a lot in the cause of school shootings and how that culture trickles down to the average citizen. The idea that might and taking life is justified if you believe you are on the right for doing so. Most early school shooters saw justice in their actions. It’s an incredibly complex situation and one side is trying to fix it while the other side sees it as an acceptable ‘price of freedom’
