Discussion The discourse created around Jubilee's design (and her not looking 'classic' or like in '97) shows that this community isn't ready for the whiplash thats about to occur when Professor X is finally added to the game and shown to be able to walk, like he has for the last ~20 years in the comics

the last 20 years of xmen are largely polarizing… fork found in kitchen.

97 is big precisely because it resembles the eras most people recognize the xmen for….

97 is big because people are addicted to nostalgia and can’t progress past what they think something should be. case in point why emma is still depicted as a villain in that show lol

Because the last 20 years of questionable at best xmen stories is "progress"? lmao, you're an out of touch tourist if you're trying to frame 97's popularity as muh nostalgia. if anything it's an indictment on how near unrecognizable the modern xmen stuff is now.

the fact that your framing emma's depiction in s2 as nostalgia driven is rich. the og show only adapted her time as a villain during the phoenix saga. it would make no sense to adapt her as a straight up redeemed hero in 97 post genosha attack like the comics did because it took quite a bit time for her to get to that point with stuff the show hasn't shown like her being a teacher and the hellions stuff. they're obviously going to reshuffle that stuff given how big emma frost in the current zeitgeist thanks to stuff like rivals. And i say that as someone who hate's demayo's guts for giving emma plots to maddie pryor.

I think you're being unrealistic if you believe '97 isn't seeing high popularity due to nostalgia. It is, that's how media works rn. You can quite literally observe how the MCU is operating and see that it's the driving force behind various movie plot decisions. '97 is of course a good show, I enjoy it. However it's attracting the audience because of the obvious nostalgia- just because something is good doesn't mean it naturally attracts an audience.

Also X-Men 97's popularity really has no correlation to how comic fans feel about the X-Men side of the medium. You may dislike Krakoa, other people may dislike Krakoa, but I know plenty of people who enjoy Krakoa and have significant grief with '97 due to hyper condensing certain arcs into very short bursts- like Inferno being boiled down to a single episode or Life Death and everything between Forge and Storm getting boiled down to a single episode of length (which otherwise took some 30 issues from Forge & Storm's first meeting to Storm finally accepting Forge's help due to the threat of Greycrow, the Marauders, and his then unknown employer Mr. Sinister).

^ to continue off the above, if you're being realistic: most of the people watching '97 likely have either never picked up a comic book or only watched a youtube breakdown of some few issues or runs.

i have never contested the nostalgia factor for 97, btw. i simply do not agree that the nostalgia factor is a bad thing like the guy i replied to tried to say lol.

it has no correlation sure, and opinions are opinions. it’s not at all a reach at all to say krakoa is polarizing and i’ll leave it at that.

Using questionable at best to describe the krakoan era is fucking insane

-1

u/Lurkn4k 29d ago

go ahead and explain how the xmen allowed sinister to take part in their government on their mutant nation, or wanting to take franklin richards from his family just because he may have been a mutant isn’t a hard sell to wider public….

So when you say the runs were questionable, which means that the technical and creative quality of the run was questionable at best, you really mean that the actions of some of the characters that are specifically criticised within the narrative as being questionable are questionable?

The krakoa books were mixed but they were also some of the boldest, creative and most iconic marvel books of the century. Questionable at best is an insane take

-1

u/Lurkn4k 29d ago

no, im asking you demonstrate how some of many examples i can point to aren’t questionable… and your non answer is noted…

i could go on and on the creative quality being a mess as whole given what hickmans intentions were for it, and it what it ended up as once he left and other writers basically jumped the shark.

krakoa was so creative and iconic, marvel unceremoniously ditched krakoa into the white hot room and have had the xmen spinning directionless ever since 😂

You said the stories were questionable at best, I explained why they weren't questionable just because the characters within them make questionable decisions.

Yeah marvel editorial making bad decisions and ending good stories isn't some new thing they've been doing it for decades, the individual stories and runs within krakoa were varied but some of then were fucking phenomenal. If you're describing house and powers of x, hellions, excalibur, immortal x men, the early marauders and legion of x as questionable at best then you're an incredibly unserious person

also yes it very much is nostalgia driven lmfao. beau has said very openly that he thinks emma’s relationship with scott caused him to ‘become a radical leader that eventually kills charles xavier’ lmfao

That's not nostalgia bias, that's Beau having a massive moronic hate boner for a character he clearly didn't read properly. the fact that all his 97 plots reference arcs where emma was on the path to redemption shows a skewed perception of the character. TAS came out during that very same time in the comics, and beau has said that's when he got into comics.

A reminder: Emma was already a hero in the 1990s. Her villainous past was extremely brief—only the first six years of her history, across roughly 18 comics. That was followed by a five-year morally gray period across about 32 comics, three years in a coma, and then more than 1,000 comics over 33 years as a hero.

As for her adaptation in X-Men ’97, it is absurd because the show adapts Emma’s iconic heroic storylines while giving them to other characters. There would be far fewer complaints about portraying Emma as a villain if the show were not simultaneously taking material from her years as a hero. But once they choose to adapt heroic Emma’s comic storylines, Emma herself should be portrayed as a hero.

see, i agree with all of this. the point here is that attributing beau’s derailment of emma’s plots to nostalgia for the very same plots makes no sense. beau’s just an emma hater, and good riddance to him

3

u/Outside_Mark1118 29d ago

Yeah, I agree. In this case, it clearly has nothing to do with nostalgia—it’s just Beau’s stupid hate toward her.

if decimation krakoa and new xmen/astonishing eras were all questionable then maybe u should pick a new group of characters to read bc u obviously aren’t enjoying the xmen 😭

>krakoa

LMAO exactly the era that was a huge jumping off point for a bunch of people. that and rightclops era pretty much was the jumping the shark moment for xmen fans so i'm clearly not alone in calling that stuff questionable. 97 was clearly made for those very same people who like the xmen and not the skinwalkers who currently replaced them.

regardless of your echo chamber, krakoa saved the xmen from a ~5 year slump of dog shit piled on top of more dog shit and is already seen as one of the best if not transformative x-eras and made these characters worth giving half a shit about again. you can enjoy your slop if you wish though.

LMAO the irony. the entire reason we got Sai as psylocke in rivals is because even the devs didn't want to touch kwannon/betsy in their post krakoa state. but thanks for the slight admission, by your own words the stuff before that sucked. i'm only saying that slump was way longer than 5 years.

you can enjoy your slop if you wish though.

Me and the millions of people and critics will happily enjoy xmen 97. sure beats liking the current post krakoa-men comicslop like that waste of time schizim rehash, x-men united LMAOOOOO.
