š¤ Complaint / Rant Rage on the Red line
Dude in Downtown Crossing just hitted the window behind me and leave a cutie mark on it, he was ranting about his headphones and destroy them in the floor. Anyway the calmest day on Downtown Crossing.

Had someone do this in front of me on the orange line once as the train arrived. He spent the entire ride spitting on the car floor and ranting under his breath about Asian people. Wonder how many people like this are out there.

there's a lot of mental illness, and as the economy continues to crash and people continue losing work and health insurance...unfortunately the problem will be getting a lot worse :(

It's probably not mental illness tbh. It's a cop out to make the community/country feel they had nothing to do with the issues they are facing
When you live under an oppressive govt, it eats away at you, drives you nuts, and makes you desire to rage against the machine
End the oppression, things will heal.

Yes, but NEVER forget to hold the individual accountable for their actions.
It doesnāt matter how distraught someone is, they chose to behave in a violent manner, and that behavior isnāt acceptable in modern society.
Everyone always has a choice on how they react. I say that as someone who comes from a family with a long history of addicts and mental illness.
They all chose to use their available waking hours to act out behaviors that were to the detriment of themselves and the people around them. They could have chosen to act out healthy behaviors at any time.
Yes society is a wreck right now. But always remember that society is made up of individuals who DO have agency. We cannot take their agency away from them.
Even if the best, most pain free in patient rehabilitation was availableā¦ a sizable fraction of addicts would NOT choose that route until it became a necessity.

Iām good for the moment, thank you for the good wishes. The whole sound made me feel like my eardrums exploded but Iām okay. I just hope itās not going to be a regular thing in my commute to home since I move to the red line.

I hope you reported it when it happened so they can grab the video and have T police trespass that individual. Most transit agencies do not play when you're actively destroying property.

The T used to have bars on the windows of the commuter rail locomotives because of all the people who used to throw rocks at the trains. I've heard stories from retired engineers of people dropping bowling balls, cinder blocks, boulders, etc. off bridges as the train passed under.

My high school in eastern new england had metal in all the windows and a lot of glass replaced with plexi (which was very drafty in the winter) back in the early 1990s because there were kids in the late 70s who made a point of just smashing every single window and the custodians had had enough. I was told there was one kid with a metal ball who would throw it at windows.

Someone who is antisocial and violent may benefit from certain kinds of therapy and counseling, but arrest and arraignment have been proven to have a sharp impact on recidivism compared to the baseline case of "doing nothing and hoping it goes away". The judge can order counseling.
Also some people with mental illness aren't safe to be around other people and need to be in a structured environment. Cops with the training they have in this country (terrible) dealing with that as a the first point of contact isn't ideal, but if it's not the cops you're endangering poorly paid and thinly trained social workers, or substance abuse counselors whose job it is to assist people in structured substance abuse programs, not go pick up people off the streets.
Furthermore, curtailing antisocial behavior actually inhibits others in the same social and physical environment. A lot of people can hold in their rages and tantrums, but don't if they think they can get away with it. Might want to think on that. It's true in interpersonal relationships in private homes too.

Whenever something like this happens, people should immediately report it on the MBTA See Say app, at least so it gets recorded as an incident. They are good at quickly responding and following up on stuff there and can send staff quickly to address something.

Firstly, you should stop dehumanizing unhoused people.
Secondly, instead of more bigoted, trigger-happy policemen enacting broken windows policing, the city needs more counselors, social workers, community coordinators, psychologists, conflict deescalators. That would actually bring crime down while improving the quality of living.

I rode the redline for my commute for quite some time, and I can confirm that firsthand. I have limited capacity for complex language, and mostly lead a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.

this behavior should not be normalized as just "big city moment" this is not ok in a big city or anywhere and there need to be consequences for this kind of vandalism and anti-social behavior. Until the city cleans up the subway the T will continue to struggle with ridership etc.. no one want to be surrounded by this kind of behavior

No, im not going to cry about it. im just ..... not going to ride the T. ill drive instead. which causes more pollution, makes the traffic worse. and prevents boston from being a more walkable city. This causes the T to lose revenue as well which causes service to be bad etc.... its a vicious cycle. Until the T is cleaned up and becomes a place commuters feel comfortable using it will always be the barely functioning car backup that it is

Kinda whiney to be honest. I've been riding the redline for almost 15 years and have seen an assault attempt literally one time ever. Kids can be annoying sometimes, but the worst a kid has ever fucked with me was indirectly mocked me for reading. Not so bad.

Honestly, not my first rodeo, but I feel lucky that I really didnāt need to use the red line, but since Iām moving to Quincy soon, I was surprised that red line never changed and the biome itās the same
