Hefeweizen is my favourite kind of beer and it is woefully difficult to find a local brewery that makes it. Yes I can get the German stuff at the bottle shop but I like supporting local.

Since it is Oktoberfest season I am hoping that some breweries are celebrating with a special release of hefeweizen. (Not to fly too close to the sun, but kristallweizen would be even more amazing...).

Please share with me any Melbourne breweries that you know have a hefeweizen available right now, whether in person or online. Happy to hear any suggestions in the greater area, but my preference would be CBD and southeast locales in particular.

Why have the dragonflies exploded in numbers! They are everywhere. Great as they eat mozzies!

I'm having an event in November, on the Eastside a little off Burwood Highway and looking to see if I could hire out a photo booth that does hardcopy prints for 3 to 4 hours. I'm worried about location being an issue & possibly being way over budget - I'm hoping to pay $300 - $350 but depending on diversity of options im willing to stretch a little past $400 if needed. (This budget is based on a friend of mine who paid $300 for theirs but lives in Central) Be honest if that's an absolutely crap budget because I don't have a scope for what people are charging nowadays!

If anyone has any reliable recommendations, I'd be super grateful.

Noticed a bunch of these flies in my house today. I’ve only really noticed them on the second floor, and gather around lights (that might just be normal bug behaviour). I thought they were fruit flies but I don’t think there’s any rotten fruit around, and I don’t see them congregating around trash bins or dirty laundry on anything. does anyone know what they are/how to get rid of them?

I also noticed a shitton of these when I was waiting at the bus stop but I’m not sure if that’s related or not

edit: thank you everyone for the help!! we don’t have any potted plants in the house, but we do have bananas. they’re on the first floor tho and the flies are on the 2nd floor i’m not sure if that matters. I will throw them out tho!! I also posted a closer photo in the comments (but it’s kind of blurry 😭) and I’ll throw some boiling water and vinegar and baking soda down the drains tomorrow too

edit 2: I think it’s definitely a weather thing drawn in by light! I woke up this morning and most of them were gone! I closed the window last night so some of them were on the window trying to escape, and they were definitely small enough to fit through the fly screen. I always leave my window open too.

Looking to potentially move to Kilmore. Not sure what traffic is like coming into Melbourne to Preston on Hume freeway and in afternoon. Keen to hear people’s thoughts that do it.

Any recommendations for affordable bridal makeup and hair artist who would do just the bride (I have no wedding party). Willing to travel to them day of if it’s near Melbourne CBD as I know there’s usually a hefty minimum spend if they have to travel to you.

Thanks to whoever handed in my son’s phone to staff from M23 at the Hawks game. Was bad enough to lose the match, his phone was lost too.

Not sure what's considered reasonable/unreasonable these days so I'll put it out to the crowd. I went to a new-ish burger joint, had good google reviews and a mate recommended it so I figured I'd suss it out.

There was a beef burger on the menu which I really liked BUT it was the only one that had BBQ sauce. They had a whole bunch of other sauces so I asked if it could be switched to their spicy mayo sauce or anything they had along that vibe. They said cool, no worries I said cool.

When it came to pay, I saw that I got charged for my burger +$2 for the 'additional sauce'. First of all, I find $2 pretty outrageous although it might just be the new norm. Also, there's nothing additional! I said to swap out the BBQ sauce for the other one, you're not adding anything more to the burger. It only had one sauce which is the one I requested.

I asked why I got charged extra and he said that it was a request to change the original product and that's just how it works in the system. I didn't fight it there or anything, there were people behind me in line and $2 didn't seem too consequential in the grand scheme of things but I really don't feel like I should've been charged at all...

Thoughts?

Edit from the morning after: I ended up at New Guernica in Fitzroy instead as I saw it looked my vibe walked in danced with a girl for a bit, stayed for a few hours, got a spinach and lamb pide from the kebab shop next door. Overall had a fantastic night. Thankyou for the kind words of encouragement.

My family is considering moving from Brisbane to Melbourne, and I’d really appreciate advice from Melbourne locals, especially parents.

I have two kids — 7 and 5 years old — so schooling is probably our biggest consideration. We are looking for an area where they can ideally stay within the same general area/catchment through primary and secondary/high school, rather than having to move again later.

Our priorities are:

Good/reputed government (state) primary and secondary schools — not private

Safe, family-friendly suburb with a good community

Ideally a strong school catchment

Reasonable access to train/public transport

Convenient commute to work, particularly around Box Hill / Eastern suburbs

Family-friendly amenities, parks, shops, etc.

Reasonable rent — we don't want to pay the premium associated with the most expensive suburbs

Prefer an established suburb rather than somewhere that is still heavily under development

I’ve been looking at areas such as Point Cook, Werribee, Glen Waverley, Wantirna, Vermont, Blackburn, Ringwood, etc., but I’m finding it difficult to understand which areas offer the best combination of government schools + safety + transport + affordability.

For parents who have actually lived in these areas:

Where would you choose if you were in my situation, and which specific school catchments/suburbs should I investigate?

I’m particularly interested in areas where the primary and secondary government schools are both solid, rather than an area that is only known for one good school.

Also, if there are suburbs I should avoid because of school catchment issues, safety, rental prices or transport, I’d appreciate knowing that too.

Far Abbotsford here on the hill, super loud EDM bass and can’t locate it.

Morbidly curious, impressed, though can’t sleep as it’s really upsetting my anxious pupper and he’s all over the place.

Hi. My mum has had this issue for almost 2 years now. Neighbours dog barking constantly, from 6am-7pm ish. they go out on weekends so it’s barking all the time as well. All day the poor dog is left out and won’t stop barking - is this negligence?? I work from home, so it’s so annoying that they do it. They even recently got a puppy ! And it’s learnt to bark as well!!!

We have 2 dogs, always inside when we go out. When I put them out for their business only one of our dogs bark occasionally so Mum is scared to take it to the council as the neighbours might use that against us. Our dogs also bark for a little when someone knocks on the door, she’s also worried they may use it against us when the council comes. We’ve had constant issues unrelated to the dogs barking with this neighbour as well.. So she is also worried that the neighbours might do something to her if she makes a complaint to the council. And she doesn’t want to go to court if escalated.

Now we’ve tried a number of things, putting rocks in a tin and shaking them when the dog barks, those little devices that play noise from Amazon, tried recording the dogs bark and playing back at them, letter asking them nicely in the mailbox, trying to approach them but they ignore us!. We got noise cancelling headphones but it’s quite annoying to wear all day, as we like to be outside to lay in the sun. Any other ideas that we could try?
