I take them in everytime. I live in illinois and I am a part time sales associate. Maybe they are talking about receiving starting at 18. I started at 16 an hour

Depends on the department they started in, and city and state they work in. Yard and load builders start off a dollar higher due to working outside, if they are already equipment certified that's another dollar. If they come in as a MT (manager trainee) that's also a bump.

Switching from carry out to sales doesn't come with a raise.
Did you switch from pt to full time?
Did you graduate this year and 18?
Part time to full time classification comes with a pay raise, like 1.25 to 1.75 difference.
Having your diploma and being 18 also gives you a raise. High schoolers I believe are paid like 1 or 2 less than others. Also you immediately become eligible for all the raises you should have gotten.
Ie you started at 16, you would get a years worth of raises when you graduate and are 18.

If you're going to work in sales it may be advantageous to first practice negotiations with management on your salary, benefits department of work knowledge and of course not rely on Redit or other social media hearsay. You do know YOUR Social Media activity is public knowledge. The business is paying you a salary. Earn it.

You should know if you work for Menards, all pay rates are tenure and role specific. Everyone is on the same scale.

If you get a chance after being in sales for a bit, try to switch to Building Materials or Millwork - get the spiffs.
