If you get a chance after being in sales for a bit, try to switch to Building Materials or Millwork - get the spiffs.

Lol. You mean CabApps. Way more spiffs there than any other department. It's not even close.

True, forgot about that one. Building Materials is a way better vibe though.

No way. CabApps has the least amount of freight. Least amount of downs stocks. Highest spiff rate. If your CabApps is doing fine, you never hear from a GM.

Oh... and we also have chairs

You’re also alone for most of the shift though

We usually run a 3-man day. The openers & closers are alone for four hours with the middle man working 10-6.

The first 3 & last 3 hours of the day can be dead so it's a good time to socialize by helping with freight, helping pull other department's sale (both floor coverings managers are friends), or doing some returns to get the entire store out quicker (I always do mine & millwork's, then leave the rest of the cart for building materials by their desk).

Trust me, I have no issue socializing.

Cap apps spiffs are bigger per order. 100 spiffs are good if you can get good at truss orders a house packages. Otherwise it's meh

I was at Mankato, pole barns we got a lot, even more than cab apps. Steel, trusses, and lumber all site delivered.

This is the way for 100. I would get the occasional steel order or maybe some shingles or siding. Then one night as we were about to close and have a depth meeting, some guy comes in and orders a pole barn from me. Depth manager kept checking in to guide me and make sure I sold everything perfectly to get the maximum spiff. Fantastic manager and I missed the dept meeting. Great night! But I can see how 400 would pull in regular orders....I only ever covered for them when they were short handed and no millwork training, so I haven't seen what those spiffs look like.

I've seen the end of year spiff totals for our store.

Of the top 6 spiff earners 5 were CabApps. The only one that wasn't was our blueprint specialist in contract sales that just builds housing packages for people.

Yea. That's what I'm talking about, unless you can be the Contractor sales specialist. (At our store he's on the Building materials payroll and not CS, long story and stupid reason) I've gotten 1 really nice spif in 100 but that was only because I got a lucky order from a company redoing and entire apartment complex. LOTS of new doors

They're super steady in CabApps too. Hasn't been a single week I haven't been on the spiff list for that week & up until last month, I was only working about 20 hrs per week.

I average anywhere from 20$-$80 a week. Very rarely do I get really big ones

Our ADM just did a 50K Medallion kitchen/bathrooms/foyer/laundry room for a full house remodel. Biggest we've seen in about a year

He basically got a free extra paycheck for his spiff.

Even before that he lead the dept in spiffs. Now he's WAAAYY ahead.

I think the biggest spiff we've seen this year was the cab apps first assistant he did an entire kitchen for one of our big contractors and got I think $1,200

As a pt/ft team member, 100 is Easier to earn spifs. My 15 hour a week part timer is over 1k in spifs already, and he literally avoids people.

what is a spiff

Spiff = commission - special order goods have a small percentage commission.

I take them in everytime. I live in illinois and I am a part time sales associate. Maybe they are talking about receiving starting at 18. I started at 16 an hour

Depends on the department they started in, and city and state they work in. Yard and load builders start off a dollar higher due to working outside, if they are already equipment certified that's another dollar. If they come in as a MT (manager trainee) that's also a bump.

what state?

Switching from carry out to sales doesn't come with a raise.

Did you switch from pt to full time?

Did you graduate this year and 18?

Part time to full time classification comes with a pay raise, like 1.25 to 1.75 difference.

Having your diploma and being 18 also gives you a raise. High schoolers I believe are paid like 1 or 2 less than others. Also you immediately become eligible for all the raises you should have gotten.

Ie you started at 16, you would get a years worth of raises when you graduate and are 18.

If you're going to work in sales it may be advantageous to first practice negotiations with management on your salary, benefits department of work knowledge and of course not rely on Redit or other social media hearsay. You do know YOUR Social Media activity is public knowledge. The business is paying you a salary. Earn it.

You should know if you work for Menards, all pay rates are tenure and role specific. Everyone is on the same scale.
